Heartwarming. Wise. Amazing. Those are some of the superlatives that friends and colleagues used to describe Vin Di Bona during a tribute to the veteran “America’s Funniest Home Videos” executive producer hosted by Hollywood Media Professionals.

Creators make content. That’s the most basic tenet of our industry. Platforms like YouTube and TikTok are, at their bones, massive troves of user-generated content (Ugc), all made by creators.
But some creators also need content.
Like people who make reaction videos and clip compilations. These genres of video (and livestream) can be contentious, with creators like SSSniperwolf and xQc catching flak for using other creators’ content without permission and not adding enough of their own original commentary. Despite that, though, reaction and compilation videos have a major presence on platforms. Just look at Daily Dose of Internet, which has more than 20 million subscribers on YouTube and to date has generated over 14 billion views.
There’s a big audience out there for this stuff. People who just want to watch “100 funniest clips of kids falling down” compilations, or their favorite YouTuber scrolling through cute cat videos. And where there’s an audience,...

Five years ago this week, the television industry rose to the challenge of keeping news, daytime and late-night talk shows and other topical series on the air during the harsh early months of the Covid pandemic.
We didn’t know it then, but March 2020 marked a huge inflection point for the television business. Stay-at-home orders, masks and antigen tests — it seems distant and not so distant all at once. The story of how Covid helped supercharge the streaming business — and the streaming wars — has been well documented in recent years.
But another big TV story unfolded during the early months of lockdown that hasn’t gotten as much attention. The first few weeks of the pandemic spurred more seat-of-the-pants innovation to broadcast operations and engineering than had been done since the days of Sid Caesar and Milton Berle in the early 1950s. In media and entertainment, the show-must-go-on ethos is real.

Long before user-generated video clips dominated social media, they were the source of laughs and prize money on America’s Funniest Home Videos, which launched 35 years ago.
Series creator Vin Di Bona was fascinated by Japanese comedy programs featuring home footage, leading him to adapt one into the 1980s celebrity game show Animal Crack-Ups, hosted by Alan Thicke.
In 1989, Di Bona discovered Japanese variety show Fun With Ken and Kato Chan, with two hosts quipping about viewer-submitted videos. He compiled an eight-minute pitch video using Japanese clips and enlisted Animal Crack-Ups writer Todd Thicke (Alan’s younger brother) for the pilot. Thicke tested the video out on friends and recalls actress Jane Seymour loving it but also expressing concern for anyone taking a spill.
“That was a really good note,” says Thicke, an executive producer until 2015. “We called it ‘recovery’ and always wanted to show that no one was really hurt.

Last month, Vin Di Bona was at a car show when he struck up a conversation with a fellow gearhead. When Di Bona mentioned that he was the producer behind “America’s Funniest Home Videos,” the 40-something man exclaimed, “My kid and I watch that show all the time!” — and then proceeded to sing the familiar theme.
When “Afv” launched 35 years ago, that man would have been in elementary school. Di Bona, who has watched his series now span multiple generations, never gets tired hearing about its impact.
“We see it in the studio,” he says. “I can’t tell you how many times someone will say, ‘I watched this with my parents.’”
“Afv” launched as a special in 1989 on a bit of a lark: As video cameras had finally reached critical mass in American homes, the idea was that there must be enough hilarious footage out there to create a one-time clip show.

America’s Funniest Home Videos creator Vin Di Bona has sold a majority stake in his eponymous production company and FishBowl Worldwide Media to an investor group led by Clarion Capital Partners.
Di Bona is remaining CEO of both companies, which will be key components of Clarion-backed entity V10 Entertainment. V10 is led by CEO John Stevens, who founded Zoo Productions and Hangar 56 Media, and President Hans Schiff, a former non-scripted agent at CAA.
Financial terms were not disclosed, but sources familiar with the transaction said it falls in the nine-figure range, a healthy sum given the currently adverse macroeconomic conditions. The house that “Afv” built is about to get a lot bigger.
Vin Di Bona, creator and executive producer of ABC’s enduring unscripted franchise “America’s Funniest Home Videos,” has sold a majority stake in Vin Di Bona Productions and Fishbowl Worldwide Media to a private investor group led by Clarion Capital Partners.
The transaction calls for Di Bona’s operation to be the cornerstone of a portfolio of content and production assets managed under the Venture 10 Studio Group umbrella, led by Hans Schiff, a longtime unscripted agent and alum of CAA and WME, and producer John Stevens. Clarion Capital, previously a key investor in IMAX, is prepared to take a big swing into the world of content production, starting with the Di Bona purchase. The transaction is believed to be valued in the nine-figure range given the value of the “Afv” library and Di Bona’s related businesses.

“Afv,” the family TV institution that Bob Saget helped launch in 1989, will pay tribute to its original host for the rest of the season with a regular segment showcasing memorable moments from his time on the ABC series.
“America’s Funniest Home Videos” honored its original emcee in its Jan. 16 episode, a week after Saget’s death at the age of 65. But executive producer Vin Di Bona decided earlier this week that there was too much prime PG-rated Saget material in the vault from his eight-year run not to share more on the air.
“I’d forgotten how whimsical and crazy his host bits were — very physical and very visual,” Di Bona told Variety. “In one show he walks on stage in front of the audience and says ‘Did I tell you it’s my birthday?’ And the audience all raises their hands with wrapped gifts for him. It’s that...

“America’s Funniest Home Videos” has vaulted past “Gunsmoke” and joined the rarefied ranks of “The Simpsons” on the list of primetime entertainment series that have amassed an astounding 700 episodes.
The milestone segment kicks off “Afv’s” 32nd season on ABC on Oct. 3. Getting there over the past year and a half was a heck of a journey for “Afv” veterans, who thought they’d seen it all when it comes to producing the beloved clip show.
The biggest jolt was the loss of the studio audience. The show’s competition and comedy elements lean heavily on the reaction of the “Afv” studio audience, as executive producers Vin Di Bona and Michele Nasraway explain.
“We did one show without an audience and we said, ‘Ok we really need to make a big pivot,’” Di Bona says. “We missed the laughter that is so affirming in our show.” Host Alfonso Ribeiro admits...
