Di Bona was hailed for his long run with Vin Di Bona Productions and his extensive efforts to train the next generation through his work as an instructor and member of the board of trustees of Emerson College, his alma mater. After starting his career as a pop singer in his native Rhode Island, Di Bona segued into TV production, working for local TV stations such as Wbz-tv Boston and later, Kcbs-tv Los Angeles.

The Nexstar-owned network handed V10 Entertainment-owned FishBowl Worldwide Media, which is behind the series, a 100-episode order. This is more than three times as large as the 30-episode order that it received for season one, which premiered on The CW in February 2024 and ran through November.

Exclusive: V10 Entertainment, the company that owns America’s Funniest Videos producer Vin Di Bona Productions, has a new President.

The company, which acquired Vin Di Bona’s company last year, has named former Paramount Global executive Carter Skeath to the role.

The move comes as V10 Entertainment has acquired the global distribution rights to Afv from The Walt Disney Company. Afv, which is hosted by Alfonso Ribeiro, is currently in its 35th season on ABC, making it the longest-running primetime entertainment show in the network’s history.

Skeath was previously SVP, Sales at Paramount Global Content Distribution.

Series creator Vin Di Bona was fascinated by Japanese comedy programs featuring home footage, leading him to adapt one into the 1980s celebrity game show Animal Crack-Ups, hosted by Alan Thicke.

In 1989, Di Bona discovered Japanese variety show Fun With Ken and Kato Chan, with two hosts quipping about viewer-submitted videos. He compiled an eight-minute pitch video using Japanese clips and enlisted Animal Crack-Ups writer Todd Thicke (Alan’s younger brother) for the pilot. Thicke tested the video out on friends and recalls actress Jane Seymour loving it but also expressing concern for anyone taking a spill.

“We see it in the studio,” he says. “I can’t tell you how many times someone will say, ‘I watched this with my parents.’”

“Afv” launched as a special in 1989 on a bit of a lark: As video cameras had finally reached critical mass in American homes, the idea was that there must be enough hilarious footage out there to create a one-time clip show.

The series launched as a special in 1989 before becoming a weekly series in January 1990. Created by Vin Di Bona, based on Japanese variety show Fun TV with Kato-chan and Ken-chan, the series has given away more than $18M in prize money and evaluated over 2 million video clips from home viewers.

America’s Funniest Home Videos creator Vin Di Bona has sold a majority stake in his eponymous production company and FishBowl Worldwide Media to an investor group led by Clarion Capital Partners.

Di Bona is remaining CEO of both companies, which will be key components of Clarion-backed entity V10 Entertainment. V10 is led by CEO John Stevens, who founded Zoo Productions and Hangar 56 Media, and President Hans Schiff, a former non-scripted agent at CAA.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but sources familiar with the transaction said it falls in the nine-figure range, a healthy sum given the currently adverse macroeconomic conditions. The house that “Afv” built is about to get a lot bigger.

Vin Di Bona, creator and executive producer of ABC’s enduring unscripted franchise “America’s Funniest Home Videos,” has sold a majority stake in Vin Di Bona Productions and Fishbowl Worldwide Media to a private investor group led by Clarion Capital Partners.

The transaction calls for Di Bona’s operation to be the cornerstone of a portfolio of content and production assets managed under the Venture 10 Studio Group umbrella, led by Hans Schiff, a longtime unscripted agent and alum of CAA and WME, and producer John Stevens. Clarion Capital, previously a key investor in IMAX, is prepared to take a big swing into the world of content production, starting with the Di Bona purchase. The transaction is believed to be valued in the nine-figure range given the value of the “Afv” library and Di Bona’s related businesses.

“Blockbuster,” a Netflix comedy series about the flagship movie rental store starring Randall Park, has set a premiere date for Nov. 3. The half-hour comedy’s 10 episodes will premiere all at once on the streaming service.

Park plays Timmy Yoon, an analog dreamer who is in charge of the last operating Blockbuster Video in the United States. Timmy, alongside the rest of his employees, must work to remind their community that the local store can provide the human connection that big corporations can’t.

Alongside Park, the cast includes Melissa Fumero as Eliza Walker, Tyler Alvarez as Carlos Herrera, Madeleine Arthur as Hannah Hadman and Olga Merediz as Connie Serrano. Recurring guest stars for the series include J.B. Smoove as Percy Scott and Kamaia Fairburn as Kayla Scott.

After two years without a studio audience (thanks to Covid-19), ABC’s America’s Funniest Home Videos is back to taping in front of a live crowd and offering double the normal prize money. The upcoming 33rd season of the longest-running primetime show in the network’s history will premiere on October 2, 2022 with Alfonso Ribeiro returning as host.

“We’re thrilled to welcome a live audience back to the studio after two years,” stated Vin Di Bona, Executive Producer and Director of America’s Funniest Home Videos. “We’re starting with a limited audience size of 50 people, and hope to be back to full audience capacity of 200, soon. The studio audience has always been an essential part of our set, and an integral part of the show, providing an effusive energy felt by our viewers, host and crew.

When America’s Funniest Home Videos returns for Season 33 this fall, it’s bringing way more cash to the table, ABC announced Thursday.

The new season (which premieres Sunday, Oct. 2 at 7/6c) will double the weekly prize money awarded to its contestants. Its first-place prize, given to the funniest or most unique clip, will now be upped to 20,000. Second place will take home 6,000, and third place will bank 4,000. Per usual, the first-place winners will then move on compete for 100,000 and the grand prize vacation package.

Calling all fans of cat and pratfall videos: America’s Funniest Home Videos wants you back on the soundstage, stat.

When the 33rd season debuts Oct. 2 on ABC, the long-running show will feature a live studio audience for the first time in two seasons. The video show also plans to double the weekly prize money for the new season: first prize winners will earn 20,000, while second place victors are up to 6,000 and third place gets 4,000.

First-place prize winners then move on to the next competition round where they vie for 100,000. At the end of the season, 100,000 champs will compete for a grand prize vacation package.

ABC has renewed Shark Tank for its 13th season and America’s Funniest Home Videos for season 32. The shows have been longtime anchors of ABC’s Friday and Sunday lineups, respectively.

Shark Tank, which ranks as Friday’s No. 1 show this season in Adults 18-49 (tie), is bucking the downward linear ratings trend, up 7% in total viewers year-to-year to deliver its most-watched season in three years – since the 2017-2018 season.
