  • German character actor, on stage from 1914 at the Wiener Volksbuehne. Had a distinguished theatrical career under Max Reinhardt at the Deutsches Theater in Berlin. Appeared in German silent films, often playing intense, dramatic roles. As a Jew, he left Germany in 1933, moving to the U.S. in 1938 and attaining American citizenship a year later. Acted under the nom de plume Ernest Dorian in English-speaking films, returning to Germany in 1947. Active in character roles, latterly white-haired, during the 1950's and 60's.
  • Although his name couldn't be more "German" he was undesirable in his own country in the 30's because of his Jewish roots. He already left Germany in 1933 and played at theaters in Vienna and Prague as well as in Zurich and Brussels.
  • Deutsch was a good tennis player and came up to rank 7 of the Austro-Hungarian tennis list.
  • Ernst Deutsch returned to Vienna after the war, from 1951 he lived in Berlin.
  • After high school he served in the k.u.k. Army.
  • The actor Ernst Deutsch was the son of Prague based German merchant Ludwig Kraus and his wife Louise Kraus.
  • He is most widely known to English-speaking audiences for his role as "Baron" Kurtz in the 1949 film noir The Third Man.

  • In 1938 he went to the USA where he got the American nationality one year later.
  • His parts distinguished through an intensive, sometimes tremendous performance which predestined Ernst Deutsch for gaunt and evil figures. These parts gave him a reputation as an expressionist actor par excellence.
  • He was buried in the Jewish Cemetery in Berlin.
  • In more than 2000 performances he played the role of 'Nathan the Wise' and traveled with productions from all over Europe.
  • After a stint in 1946 in Buenos Aires Ernst Deutsch returned in 1947 to Paris from where he went to Vienna. In Vienna he became a member of the Burgtheater.
  • He usually impersonated Nazis or officers in the USA under his pseudonymous Ernest Dorian.
  • Deutsch married his childhood friend Anuschka Fuchsin in 1922. She was the daughter of the Prague industrialist Arthur Fuchs. Her cousin Herbert Fuchs of Robettin was married to the sister of writer Franz Werfel.
  • Stage actor.
  • Won Honorary Award - 1964 for "For his continued outstanding individual contributions to the German film over the years.".
  • In his films he was very successful with his negative leaning characters which got him many roles during the silent movie era.
  • He was awarded the Best Actor award in 1948 in Venice for his performance in the film Der Prozeß.
  • During a theater tour in England he acted in the movie "The Marriage of Corbal" (1936).
  • In order to get by financially he also sold apartments along the way.
  • The actor Ernst Deutsch began his theater career in 1914 at the Viennese Volksbühne and his career led him to the most important German-speaking theaters.
  • In 1973, the former 'Junge Theater' of Friedrich Schütter in Hamburg-Uhlenhorst was renamed after him. Ernst Deutsch had staged a performance of Nathan The Wise here shortly before his death.
