'Law & Order: Svu' Star Mariska Hargitay Made Her Acting Debut 40 Years Ago
Image
Quick LinksMariska Hargitay Started at the Bottom With 'Ghoulies''Ghoulies' Inspired Three Bad SequelsIt Took 15 Years for Hargitay to Be Taken Seriously as an Actress

Mariska Hargitay was a relatively unknown actress when she was cast in the role of Olivia Benson on the crime drama television series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. When the show debuted in 1999, Benson had the rank of a junior detective, which has been steadily upgraded over the course of the show’s 26-season run to sergeant, commanding officer, lieutenant, and then captain. In playing the longest-running character in one of the longest-running drama shows in television history, Hargitay has become one of the highest-paid actresses on television and won two Emmy Awards.

Just as Mark Harmon’s iconic portrayal of Leroy Jethro Gibbs on NCIS has overshadowed the rest of Harmon’s career, Hargitay has become so synonymous with the Benson character that her...

‘Sugar Town’ Was One of the Best Movies of 1999, One of the Best Years Ever — So Why Can’t We See It?
Image
In the age of streaming, there’s a widespread belief that every movie is available, all the time, everywhere. Don’t fall for it! Some of the greatest movies ever made are nowhere to be found due to everything from music rights snafus to corporate negligence. In this column, we take a look at films currently out-of-print on physical media and unavailable on any streaming platform in an effort to draw attention to them and say to their rights holders, “Release This!”

At the end of 1999, Entertainment Weekly ran a cover story titled “The Year That Changed Movies,” celebrating the abundance of highwire masterpieces that the American film industry seemed to be cranking out on a weekly basis that year. “Eyes Wide Shut,” “Magnolia,” “The Limey,” “Fight Club,” “Being John Malkovich,” “Election,” “Boys Don’t Cry”, “The Straight Story,” “The Sixth Sense,” “Bringing Out the Dead,” “The Matrix,” and “Three Kings” are just a random sampling,...

Image
Four years ago, we heard that Luca Bercovici, who wrote and directed the 1984 creature feature Ghoulies, and his co-writer Jefery Levy were trying to get Ghoulies franchise rights holder Sony Pictures to let them reboot the franchise. Earlier this year, a press release revealed that Bercovici and Levy have officially reclaimed the domestic rights to Ghoulies and have big plans for the franchise, including making a new trilogy of films. Now, actor Michael Des Barres – who played the villainous cult leader Malcolm Graves in the original film – has made a post on social media that indicates he might be returning for the reboot!

Sharing an image of his Ghoulies character, Des Barres wrote, “I had green contacts on my eyes which virtually blinded me! And the horns seem to keep on growing as the weeks went by.. there’s no business like sure business!!! Guess what? I think they want me to do it again.

Ghoulies Are Good Enough: Mvd Rewind Collection Gives ‘Ghoulies’ and ‘Ghoulies II’ a Facelift [Review]
Image
Ghoulies is not the Gremlins rip-off its reputation suggests. The two films were in production at the same time, but budgetary issues delayed the release of Ghoulies. Although it likely benefited from Gremlins‘ success, the similarities begin and end with diminutive monsters. Ghoulies II actually shares more in common with Gremlins, as the first Ghoulies leans more — arguably too much — into the fantasy realm.

From producer Charles Band’s Empire Pictures, the 1985 horror-comedy is directed by Luca Bercovici (Rockula) from a script he co-wrote with producer Jefery Levy. At just over 80 minutes, the film doesn’t waste time trying to make sense of its messy plot.

When Jonathan Graves (Peter Liapis) inherits an old manor from the father he never knew, he does what any 20-something with newfound freedom would do: throw a party. Something wills Jonathan to perform a ritual from an old book he finds among his father’s occult paraphernalia,...

Spinal Tap Drummer Ric Parnell, a.k.a. ‘Mick Shrimpton,’ Dies at 70
Image
Ric Parnell, who played the fictional band Spinal Tap’s drummer Mick Shrimpton in the classic 1984 heavy metal “mockumentary” “This Is Spinal Tap,” has died at the age of 70, according to a post from the group’s Harry Shearer and Yahoo News. No cause of death was initially reported.

Ric Parnell, our drummer in This is Spinal Tap, passed away today. No one ever rocked harder.

— Harry Shearer (@theharryshearer) May 2, 2022

The group — fronted by actor-musicians Michael McKean (as David St. Hubbins), Christopher Guest (as Nigel Tufnel) and Shearer (as Derek Smalls) — crossed the line between fiction and reality from their inception: the band literally road-tested tested their concept shortly after making the film, opening shows for psychedelic sludge-rockers Iron Butterfly, and no one in the audience was for the wiser.

Spinal Tap’s drummers are a running punchline in the film — all of the group’s previous drummers had died,...

Across the worlds of Hollywood, media, politics and even sports, the praises for actor Ned Beatty were universal.

The Oscar nominee, known for turns in Network, Deliverance and much more, passed away at his home today, aged 83, of natural causes.

As the entertainment world mourns the passing of Oscar nominee Ned Beatty, many stars are recalling arguably his most famous and ominous performance as TV executive Arthur Jansen in the Paddy Chayefsky satire “Network.”

In his tweet commemorating Beatty, “Karate Kid” star Ralph Macchio called “Network” one of the “greatest screenplays and films of all time” and commended Beatty’s monologue towards the end of the film as “ahead of its time.” In it, Beatty as Jansen gives a booming sermon to news anchor turned raging talking head Howard Beale for using his TV show to get his viewers to shut down his network’s merger with a Saudi conglomerate, putting the network in danger. You can watch the speech in the clip below.

Danny Aiello in Ce cher intrus (1991)
News of the death of Danny Aiello rippled across social media on Friday morning as friends, co-stars, peers and admirers of the 86-year-old character actor shared their thoughts on a body of work that included Do the Right Thing, Moonstruck, The Purple Rose of Cairo, Jacob’s Ladder and Madonna’s music video for “Papa Don’t Preach.”

Aiello’s Oscar-nominated performance as Salvatore “Sal” Frangione in Spike Lee’s incendiary 1989 classic Do the Right Thing was mentioned most frequently, a testament to the film’s trenchant achievements and Aiello’s compelling portrait of a pizzeria owner vexed by the changing demographics of his Brooklyn neighborhood.

Aiello’s screen career was launched by the 1973 sports drama Bang the Drum Slowly, which also starred a newcomer named Robert De Niro. Aiello joined De Niro for a notable follow-up, when both appeared in Francis Ford Coppola’s Best Picture Oscar winner The Godfather Part II,...

But “once the dust has cleared,” he adds, Bozer (Justin Hires) “starts embracing” who and what Mac really is, and with more than a little exceitemnt. “He is like Joe Pesci in Lethal Weapon.

Awhile back I wrote a rave review of the campy, hilarious new Troma movie B.C. Butcher, directed by seventeen year old Kansas Bowling. Heidi Honeycutt, programmer for the female-directed genre film festival Etheria Film Night, is also a big fan so she decided to organize a world premiere for the film at The Egyptian Theater.

The event will be presented by Etheria Film Night and The American Cinematheque, and will feature a star studded red carpet at 6:00, and a live show by the band Kill My Coquette at...

Cinefamily: Led Zeppelin Played Here
August 14

7:30 p.m.

The Silent Movie Theater

611 N. Fairfax Avenue

Los Angeles, CA 90036

Hosted by: Don’t Knock the Rock

Master documentarian Jeff Krulik will make his magnificent return to Los Angeles with his latest blockbuster, Led Zeppelin Played Here, which digs deep into the mystery of the classic rock group playing a micro-venue in Maryland. Did the band really play? Or is the tale just a hallucinogenic myth conjured up by pranksters?

Krulik will be in attendance and will participate in a post-screening Q&A session hosted by musican and actor Michael Des Barres.

It had long been rumored that on the night of Richard Nixon’s first Presidential Inauguration — January 20, 1969 — a young Led Zeppelin played a show at the Wheaton Youth Center in Wheaton, Maryland for a tiny audience of teenagers. Although attendees swear they were there, many a naysayer has claimed that the story of the show is a complete fabrication.

An Unvarnished View of the Beatles – Told by Their Secretary, Good Ol’ Freda
Michael Des Barres
I was invited to a screening of “Good Ol’ Freda.” My friend Michael Des Barres, himself no stranger to the vagaries of the rock lifestyle, was hosting a screening of what is without a doubt the best documentary ever on the Beatles. As someone who has seen, or thought he has seen everything on the Fab Four and made four pilgrimages to the holy land called Liverpool, I found myself sitting in a puddle of tears as I witnessed a totally different take through the eyes of a young Irish girl who was their secretary. You will never see another documentary.

California Solo | Review
California Dreamin’: Lewy Taps Carlyle for Understated Character Study

For his sophomore feature, director Marshall Lewy brings Robert Carlyle back to the big screen for his best film role in years with California Solo, a compelling character study goaded along as an immigration tale. An aging British rock star from the early 90s, with a distant child and a predilection for alcohol, recalls elements of other recent releases this year like Flight or This Must Be the Place even, and though it’s a slight, minimal take on themes explored by many far wiser than he, Lewy manages to make a melancholy portrait of a man forced to face significant demons from his past, imbued by the simple, sad, solo that is Carlyle’s affecting performance.

Lachlan MacAldonich (Robert Carlyle) has been living out a self imposed exile for the past decade and a half, working as a farm...

Helmer Lewy also scripts the film seen at this year's Sundance Film Festival from Cherry Sky Films in association with Syncopated Films. Lachlan MacAldonich (Carlyle) is former Britpop rocker who has settled into a comfortably numb existence in farm country just outside Los Angeles. By day, he works on an organic farm and travels regularly to the city’s farmers’ markets to sell produce. By night, he retreats to his crummy apartment to record "Flame-Outs," his podcast that recounts the tragic deaths of great musicians. NCIS Round Table: "Phoenix"
Our NCIS review broke down "Phoenix," Tuesday night's episode of TV's #1 show, in detail.

Now, TV Fanatic staff members Steve Marsi, Matt Richenthal and Eric Hochberger have assembled for our weekly Round Table Q&A discussion of events from this week's Ducky-centric installment.

Join in as we analyze the medical examiner's surprising role in the case and much more:

----------------------------------

1. Describe this episode in one word (or two, or three, or four).

Steve: Lighter, lots of laughs.

Matt: Good, but not the best.

Eric: Different, and terrific.

2. Best quotes or scenes from "Phoenix"?

Steve: A few stand out: 1. David McCallum's face lighting up when Ducky got the green light to take the lead. 2. Tony and Tim being partnered together (and the latter getting his chops busted over the Life Recorder). 3. The "kids" ganging up on Palmer at the crime scene. 4. The eccentric, somewhat unexpected perpetrator.

Matt: It was Ducky's week for sure.

NCIS, Ep. 10.03, “Phoenix”: A satisfying return to form
NCIS, Season 10, Episode 3: “Phoenix”

Written by Steven D. Binder

Directed by Terrence O’Hara

Airs Tuesdays at 8pm (Et) on CBS

For a show that largely prides itself on its character-driven storylines, NCIS has recently produced fewer episodes whose strength results from the focused analysis of a central character, missing the mark of perfection by omitting natural human interaction, floundering with uncharacteristic writing, and needlessly revisiting disposable characters. Fortunately, with “Phoenix”, the show returns to its roots and delivers a highly-entertaining episode brimming with favorable antics and enjoyable guest appearances.

Leading the investigation-of-the-week is Doctor Mallard, who starts off the hour ominously ordering the exhumation of a corpse from a 12-year-old cold case. Unlike in “Recovery”, where his inability to occupy himself while on medical leave made for his unwelcome presence both in autopsy and on screen in general, David McCallum’s insightful doctor is genuinely enjoyable here, fumbling...

NCIS Review: Are You Ready to Rock!?
NCIS was a rocking good time tonight, and not just because of an eccentric '80s one-hit wonder or a faux lunar sample.

"Phoenix" featured an unorthodox case with an unexpected team member running point. None other than Dr. Mallard got to run the show this week after Gibbs evoked Rule #38 (see Gibbs rules): Your case, your lead.

How did Ducky end up in such an unfamiliar position, and how did the recovering M.E. handle it?

Inspired by an obituary, he exhumed the body of Commander Roberts, who died 12 years ago after what Ducky no longer believed was an accident. Coincidentally, his cold case quickly tied into the team's latest victim.

Rather than relieve him because he wasn't cleared to work in a medical capacity on a current case, Gibbs let the team's elder statesman run the investigation. A class move, and the old man didn't let him down.

NCIS Promo & Photo Gallery: Back in the Saddle
After a strong and at times emotional episode last night (see our NCIS review of "Recovery"), the team is right back at it next Tuesday, with Ducky taking a lead role in the week's case despite being on medical leave.

In "Phoenix," Dr. Mallard orders the exhumation of a Navy commander’s body from a case closed 12 years ago, while the rest of the NCIS team members investigate the recent death of a U.S. Marine.

As both cases unfold, the team begins to question whether the two are somehow connected. Rocker Michael Des Barres guest stars as an ... aging rocker. Take a look at CBS' promo right now ...

We've posted photos from the episode below as well, including one in particular that should prompt speculation. After claiming in the premiere that he needs a bigger basement, here we see Gibbs building ... something!

NCIS Rocks You With Michael Des Berres
A little rock and roll never hurt anyone, yet for some reason or another crime procedurals inevitably put together an episode featuring a weathered rock star, although I can only think of a handful of shows that buckled down and actually made him/her the perpetrator. Even Fringe, with all its sci-fi craziness, has done aged rocker story and did so using Christopher Lloyd. Now it’s NCIS’s turn to tackle this particular branch of crime fiction. How will it be any different from the others? Well, in all likelihood it won’t be, but that won’t necessarily stop it from being entertaining. It just needs a good rocker, and they couldn’t have picked a better one.

According to TVLine, actual rock star-turned-actor Michael Des Barres, formerly the front man of the 1970s band Detective, has been tapped to play NCIS’s one-hit wonder. The show has...

Michael Des Barres Ready to Rock on NCIS
Michael Des Barres will bring some real-life rock star chops to NCIS this fall.

The British rocker-actor will appear on the third episode of NCIS Season 10.

“This is a very fun episode and Michael Des Barres brings tremendous humor and idiosyncrasy to a character he knows oh-too-well,” Ep Gary Glasberg said. “We really lucked out having him join us.”
