Biography

    • Born of a Spanish father and French mother in Whitechapel. Although most often called upon to play the villain (due to his dark good looks and sinister beard), he also had a career as a voice actor on BBC Radio appearing on such programs as the "Morning Story". He was a notable 'The Master' in many series of Docteur Who (1963).

  • He became a very good friend to both Jon Pertwee and Katy Manning during his time on Docteur Who (1963). Both were devastated on hearing about his death near Nevsehir in Turkey.
  • He was the first actor to play the Master, the Doctor's greatest individual enemy, in Docteur Who (1963). He played the role from the 1971 serial "Terror of the Autons" to the 1973 serial "Frontier in Space". He was succeeded in the role by Peter Pratt, Geoffrey Beevers, Anthony Ainley, Gordon Tipple, Eric Roberts, Derek Jacobi, John Simm, Michelle Gomez and Sacha Dhawan.
  • The character of the Master in Docteur Who (1963) was specifically created for him by producer Barry Letts, who had worked with him when he had been an actor himself. No other actor had even been considered for it.
  • Actors who succeeded him in the role of the Master in Docteur Who (1963) were Peter Pratt in 1976 and Geoffrey Beevers in 1981. Anthony Ainley became the permanent replacement, portraying the role until the final episode of 1989. Eric Roberts played the role in the 1996 TV movie Le seigneur du temps (1996).
  • Also re-voiced actors in such films as "Horror Express", "After the Fox", You Can't Win 'Em All" and "Tarzan's Three Challenges".
