Fair warning: Ozpolitation classic Fair Game is returning to North American movie theaters tomorrow. Directed by Mario Andreacchio, the revenge thriller stars Cassandra Delaney as a "wildlife sanctuary boss" who is pitted "against three psycho kangaroo hunters. Bored with killing kangaroos, they decide to kill the animals in the sanctuary, and when they see how attractive the owner is, they decide to have a little 'fun' with her, too. Turns out that they may get a bit more 'fun' than they bargained for." Originally released in 1986, I became aware of the film after Mark Hartley's great doc Not Quite Hollywood (2008), and I'm looking forward to seeing it (finally). Kangaroos are so cute, aren’t they? That’s why kangaroo hunters make for such bastard villains. They were bastards in Crocodile Dundee and they were bastards in Wake in Fright, which is a superb film, by the way. However, neither of those films concern kangaroo hunters quite as much as Fair Game, a slick little exploitation film from 1986.

The hunters, of which there are three, have a pretty simple dynamic. Two of them, Sparks (Garry Who) and Ringo (David Sandford), are total morons – man children with a cruel streak, while Sunny (Peter Ford), their leader, looks like an Rm Williams ambassador. He behaves like one too, presenting himself as a fair dinkum bloke. However, he rather spoils that image when he relentlessly antagonises Jessica (Cassandra Delaney), pursuing her through the outback.

That is the plot – three men antagonising a woman, and it begins quite well with a synthy score...

When it comes to exploitation cinema, Australia punches well above its weight. Its heyday came in the late Seventies and the Eighties, when filmmaking gear was getting cheaper and filmmaking collectives were blossoming in response. The sheer size of the country meant that productions which set up in the outback could pretty much do what they wanted, without fear of regulation, and whilst some of what resulted was incredibly dangerous, it makes for fantastic viewing. With its simple plot, gutsy heroine and unrestrained appetite for violence, Fair game is one of the classics of the genre.

That heroine is Jessica (Cassandra Delaney), a warden on a remote wildlife reserve who spends her time riding around on her horse, Frankie, playing with dog Kyla and tending to injured baby kangaroos. The music swells emotively, her thick mane of golden hair blows in the breeze and the sky is vast and blue.

Dark Star Pictures has revealed a brand new US trailer for an 80s Ozploitation classic called Fair Game, which is finally getting a US release for the first time after 36 years. This originally debuted back in 1986, but never showed outside of Australia aside from a few places. It's a revenge action thriller about a young woman who fights back against vicious kangaroo poachers who come after her, kicking their ass in the end because of course she does. The film is said to be one of the films that inspired Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof, along with the car chase film Vanishing Point. Time to watch all three of these as a triple bill! I’ve always had a thing for games set in rich, open world environments, where there’s lots to see and do. Grand Theft Auto is an obvious leader in this category, as are games like Fallout 3 and Skyrim, but those aren’t the only such titles that have hooked me. Other notable releases — like Just Cause 2, Bully, Saints Row: The Third, Saints Row IV and Mafia II — have as well, with the latter being a game that I’ve tried to champion since launch. Why? It’s always felt under-appreciated, and that’s bugged me.

This summer will mark six years since Mafia II hit store shelves, and it’s only fitting that we’ll soon receive a sequel. A follow-up that I cannot wait to get my hands on, and one that is easily at the top of my most anticipated list. Hell, just the idea of Mafia III existing had me excited.
