As Rick Dees and his Cast of Idiots, he hit #1 on the Billboard Charts with the song "Disco Duck" (1976).

Inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame (1999), the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame (2007), the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame, and the Tennessee Radio Hall of Fame.

He was awarded a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Radio at 1560 North Vine Street in Hollywood, California on September 17, 1984.

Was replaced with entertainment personality Ryan Seacrest from his 20 year position as morning show host at KIIS-FM in Los Angeles, California. (January 2004)
