The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Songwriters Reveal The Emotional Truth Beneath Shy Baldwin's Latest Hit
Rachel Brosnahan in La fabuleuse Mme Maisel (2017)
The knowledge that "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" invented soulful crooner Shy Baldwin will haunt me until the end of time. Between the stage presence of Leroy McClain and the powerful vocals of Darius de Haas, it's hard to believe that Shy is merely an amalgamation of similar sultry-voiced '60s pop stars. Similarly, it's hard to see Midge Maisel (Rachel Brosnahan) walk through her candy-colored New York City knowing the comedian's rise to fame is nothing more than a work of fiction (though she is inspired by some actual comedians). All this is just the magic of "Maisel." Amy Sherman-Palladino and...

‘Avengers’ Actress Danai Gurira To Play Richard III In Shakespeare In The Park Production
Image
Danai Gurira, the actress most widely known for her roles in Marvel’s Avengers franchise and AMC’s The Walking Dead, will play one of the stage’s great villains this summer when she takes the title character of Richard III for New York’s Free Shakespeare in the Park.

The Public Theater production, part of Free Shakespeare’s 60th anniversary season, will be directed by Robert O’Hara, a Tony nominee for Broadway’s Slave Play.

“Our dearly beloved Danai Gurira will be giving us her version of this extraordinary character,” said Artistic Director Oskar Eustis in a statement. “Shakespeare’s Richard created the model for politics as an extension of show business – with devastating results. As always, Shakespeare seems to be speaking directly into our contemporary dreams and nightmares.”

Gurira, the author of the Tony-nominated play Eclipsed, has portrayed General Okoye in several of Marvel’s Avengers cinematic universe films,...

Leroy McClain (‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’) on finding the ‘physical vocabulary’ of Shy Baldwin [Complete Interview Transcript]
Image
Leroy McClain plays the charismatic crooner Shy Baldwin on Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” The actor won his first SAG Award earlier this year as part of the show’s sprawling ensemble.

McClain recently spoke with Gold Derby senior editor Susan Wloszczyna about what brought him to “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” how his role was a true collaboration and whether he will return for Season 4. Watch the exclusive video interview above and read the complete transcript below.

See‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Emmy interviews: Amy Sherman-Palladino, Jane Lynch, Wanda Sykes and more [Watch]

Gold Derby: This is kind of an expected question but I just wonder how did you come to be cast as Shy Baldwin, who’s a popular crooner who gives Mrs. Maisel her big break by going on tour and opening her universe for that season?

Leroy McClain: I had actually just come back into town in New York where I live.

Ron Bochar and Mathew Price (‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ sound mixers) on capturing stand-up comedy and music acts [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“Clarity is always the number one thing for us,” says re-recording mixer Ron Bochar of his work on “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” The rapid pace of Amazon’s period comedy series demands crystal clear sound to make the dialogue land. “They talk fast,” agrees production sound mixer Mathew Price. Though he notes that the saving grace with the pace of the line delivery is that the actors always “stick to the script,” allowing for an ease in recording. But it’s not always so easy to maintain clarity within the other elements of this massive production. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

See David Mullen interview: ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ cinematographer

“Mrs. Maisel” is known for incorporating a great deal of music into each episode. In Season 3, music became more prominent thanks to the introduction of Shy Baldwin (Leroy McClain) as a crooner from 1960. Bochar reveals that “the Shy you...

‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ Team Creates Music Video Extravaganza From Their Homes (Watch)
Image
Quarantine sure stoked the creative juices of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” team. Normally, they’d be busy working on a new season of “Maisel” at this point. But since they’re following Covid-19 stay-at-home orders, the show’s dancers, musicians, cast and crew instead put together a 10-minute music video.

The video, which Amazon Prime Video will share with all TV Academy members on Monday, was the brainchild of “Maisel” creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino, promotes the show’s Emmy For Your Consideration efforts but also doubles as a showcase to raise awareness and support for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, MusiCares, and Swans for Relief.

Shot in just three days, more than 60 people put this together. It opens with Ryan Farrell as Brye Adler, the host of “Miami After Dark.” Farrell filmed from his home in Brooklyn, which he redressed to match the show’s Miami aesthetic.

Leroy McClain (‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’) on crooner Shy Baldwin and his ‘gnawing loneliness from just not being able to live his whole truth’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
British-American actor and Broadway veteran Leroy McClain plays superstar crooner Shy Baldwin, who was introduced in Season 2 and is a stand-out in the third season of Amazon’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.” He tells Gold Derby that he had less than a week to bone up on such similar singers of the era, primarily Johnny Mathis but also Nat King Cole, before he showed up on the set. Watch the exclusive video interview above.

“I went through a painstaking process watching as much of Johnny’s performances that I could find. Just as a springboard, trying to find a physical vocabulary for who Shy Baldwin would be.” But the show’s married creators, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino, also wanted McClain to inject his own fresh and unique take on such a beloved entertainer — one who decided that stand-up comic Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) would be a great opening act for...

Yes, That Really Is Sterling K. Brown Singing on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
The third season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel features more live music than ever, including one by Sterling K. Brown, who really does sing at one point in his role as Reggie, Shy Baldwin's tough tour manager. The This Is Us star is just one of several new additions to the cast for the third season, and although Broadway actor Darius de Haas dubs the singing voice of singer Shy Baldwin (played by Leroy McClain), Brown does his own singing.

In the third season, we only get to hear Brown sing one time: in episode three, he takes the mic himself for a cover of Louis Jordan's "Is You or Is You Ain't My Baby?" The original song was first recorded in 1943, so it's nearly 20 years old by the time Reggie sings it. The song's lyrics are familiar territory: the crooning singer talking about the girl he loves and...
