Evelyn Daw
Evelyn Pearl Shuck (stage name Evelyn Daw) was best known for the movie she made with James Cagney entitled "Something to Sing About". Cagney remarked many years later that besides "Yankee Doodle Dandy", his favorite musical that he appeared in was "Something to Sing About". She married Steward H. Smith, (1913 - 1975) retired from acting, and lived in San Diego for many years.

She grew up in Geddes, South Dakota where she began singing in public at the age of 10 and appeared in many church and high school shows before attending South Dakota Wesleyan and Fresno State College in California. After moving to California, she sang small parts with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Opera and sang as a soloist at St. James Episcopal Church and the Los Angeles Methodist Church. She studied with singing coach Phoebe White before being discovered by and becoming a protege of Victor Schertzinger who then directed her in the 1937 Cagney film "Something to Sing About". She had blue eyes and a lyric soprano voice. She retired from movies after marrying Dr. Seward H. Smith.
