Produced and Directed by Ken Russell

Wild man director Ken Russell struck back against commercial indifference with this alternately elegant and outrageous horror offering, that excepting a few hard- ‘R’ moments, comes off as a real (snake) charmer. Few horror movies have a real sense of wit, and fewer still can laugh at themselves without crumbling into sad parody. As if reclaiming horror as a British-made product, Russell’s The Lair of the White Worm shows us what a next-generation Hammer...

‘Mona Lisa’ Blu-ray Review (Arrow Video)
Stars: Bob Hoskins, Cathy Tyson, Robbie Coltrane, Michael Caine, Clarke Peters, Kate Hardie, Zoë Nathenson, Sammi Davis, Rod Bedall, Joe Brown, Pauline Melville | Written by Neil Jordan, David Leland | Directed by Neil Jordan

The second of Arrow Video’s recent Bob Hoskins releases, Mona Lisa may be the better movie of the two. When you look at the quality of The Long Good Friday and how good the movie is, this should be taken as a hint about how good this release from Arrow Video is. Not heavy in special features, it is the movie that speaks for itself both in the quality of the restoration and how relevant the film still feels to this day.

When George (Bob Hoskins) is released from jail his mobster boss Mortwell (Michael Caine) gives him a job as a driver. Taking a call-girl Simone (Cathy Tyson) from one customer to the next, he...

Sebastian Rice-Edwards in Hope and Glory: La guerre à sept ans (1987)
Review: John Boorman's 'Queen and Country' uses humor to offer a UK view of the Korean war
Sebastian Rice-Edwards in Hope and Glory: La guerre à sept ans (1987)
Cannes -- When John Boorman released "Hope and Glory" in 1987, I was already fascinated by stories of living through WWII, and I thought his film painted a remarkable, unsentimental portrait of what it was like to be a child during the Blitz. It was all about somehow being able to have a childhood while the world was burning down around him, and it had a spectacular sense of time and place. Walking into "Queen and Country," his latest film, I had no idea it was a sequel. Written and directed by Boorman, this film takes place as Will, the little boy in the first film, is turning 19 and leaving home, conscripted into Army service as England is sending soldiers over to help fight the Korean War. There's actually a very short clip from "Hope And Glory" at the beginning, and then we dissolve to the island in the Thames where...

A Pope Francis Biopic in Pre-Production?
Pope Francis movie in the works? Friend of the Poor: The Pope Francis Story is the working title of a projected English-language biopic about the recently elected pope, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires. According to the National Catholic Register‘s Joseph Pronechen, German-born producer and Catholic convert Christian Peschken (listed on the IMDb as Chris Peschken) decided to make a movie about the first American pope (as in, from the Americas) after watching Pope Francis appear on the balcony at the Vatican on the day of his election. The National Catholic Register report states that an "European investment group has already approved a $25-million budget" for Friend of the Poor: The Pope Francis Story — which doesn’t even have a screenplay ready. Amg Films, a company that specializes in Catholic-themed movies, would handle sales. Peschken has invited Spanish filmmaker Antonio Cuadri, whose best known effort is probably the...

DVD Review: ‘Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel’ Celebrates Icon
Chicago – The duality of “Playboy” reflects the duality of the man who created it. On one hand, the magazine notoriously fetishizes female sexuality with all the airbrushed idealism of a horny adolescent. On the other hand, it’s a reputable publication of great sociopolitical depth, with a history of voicing unpopular views at the times they were most needed.

Brigitte Berman’s eye-opening documentary “Hugh Hefner: Playboy, Activist and Rebel” is not a probing study of the iconic “Playboy” creator so much as it’s a provocative portrait of his rather unheralded work as a civil rights crusader. It’s a compulsively watchable, occasionally fascinating couple of hours, but it comes dangerously close to idolizing its subject, without ever truly grappling with the views of his detractors, and the argument that “Playboy” is inherently demeaning to women.

DVD Rating: 3.5/5.0

Much like how “The September Issue” was more interested in “Vogue” than its editor,...

5 Scary Underground Movies For Halloween
If it’s Halloween, that means it’s time for people to start clamoring to watch the latest remakes and sequels to classic scary movies. Hey, not that there’s anything wrong with that. I enjoy a well-done remake or sequel. That there’s not too many of them, that’s a different story. But, it might be time to try something a little bit off the beaten path:

Brain Dead, dir. Kevin S. Tenney. (Netflix | Amazon) Tenney’s famous for fun ’80s low-budget horror classics like Night of the Demons and Witchboard, but Brain Dead came out under the radar recently and is finally available on DVD. The film is a completely over-the-top alien zombie extravaganza that has everything for the perfect horror movie: Blood, beasts and boobs. An alien parasite infects the local rubes who terrorize a group of hikers, bank robbers and a sex-crazed minister who are...

The Double Born and Plot Twists: A Movie Review
Director/writer: Tony Randel.

The Double Born has played at several film festivals throughout 2008 to 2009 and now the film is available on DVD, as of January 26th. The Double Born is 90% drama and 10% horror, with excellent performances from the cast all around. Described by the indie film review site Badlit as creating a "sexy, simmering slow burn," The Double Born gets the pacing right (Badlit). The feature also puts film director and writer Tony Randel (Amityville 1992) back in the director's chair after a ten year hiatus. This pause from film creating has allowed Randel to hone his skill, as the writing from The Double Born acts like a hook, that will not let go until this complex web is unraveled.

The tone for The Double Born starts as tense, pauses here and there, but stays dramatic through many of the plot twists in the film. Included in the twisting and...

The Double Born
Writer/director Tony Randel turns to guerrilla filmmaking tactics for his latest thriller, The Double Born, and creates a sexy, simmering slow burn that features a smoldering, tortured performance from former indie film “it girl” Sammi Davis.

Based on a short story by Bram Stoker, The Double Born is recast as a trailer trash Southern Gothic tale about a middle-aged woman, Sophie (Davis), so desperate to have a baby that she “rapes” her husband Ephraim (Jon Lindstrom) in the middle of the night. Yes, Sophie is slightly deranged, made mad after a terrible tragedy that is slowly revealed, confined to her dark, claustrophobic little home and trapped by her own desperation.

Davis plays Sophie with just the right amount of anguish and confusion. It’s a performance that goes to the top, but not over it. But, also sprinkled throughout we get glimpses of the old Sophie, the woman who...
