Two young Black women sharing an intimate night of passion is not the typical soap opera sex scene. For Beyond the Gates executive producer Sheila Ducksworth, the storyline between Chelsea Hamilton (RhonniRose Mantilla) and her current love interest Dr. Madison Montgomery (Kenjah McNeil) on the CBS daytime series that launched this year is no click-bait ploy or Pride Month pandering. Instead, she says it’s emblematic of the soap’s DNA.

“It was really important that we have true representation on the show, and that’s across all lines,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. For Ducksworth that includes sexuality, but also goes beyond it.

That’s a bold move considering how unlikely the show’s mere existence is. With less than a handful of broadcast network soaps still airing, Beyond the Gates is the first new soap since Passions premiered in 1999. It is also the first-ever soap revolving completely around Black characters.

It was just another Tuesday episode for Beyond the Gates, yet this June 24 episode ended up bringing truths, resentment, sincere apologies, and a mega-summit to deal with the Martin mystery. In the video preview for June 16-20, Chelsea (RhonniRose Mantilla) never has any issues telling it like it is. “You were totally checking me out,” she says to Madison (Kenjah), the neurologist treating her father. “Okay, maybe I was,” Dr. Madison Montgomery admits. For the past couple of weeks, Madison and Chelsea have been flirting up a storm. Look for them to capitalize on their attraction.

There were some adorable moments in the Friday the 13th episode of Beyond the Gates. But there were also some very awkward moments. Let’s break down the chaos that also included Derek asking Ashley to marry him. Where did that come from?

The Awkward Dani

Life is full of awkward moments, and the same goes for the folks who reside beyond the gates. At Kat (Colby Muhammad) and Chelsea’s new home base (Dani’s guest house), Dani (Karla Mosley) tripped her way into Tomas’s arms. It could have been super cringey, but Dani always knows how to survive moments like that. It was a fun way to get Tomas (Alex Alegria) and Dani in the same vicinity, and it allowed her to give Tomas an awkward shovel talk later. She loves Kat and she will protect her niece as if she were her daughter. So Tomas better watch himself.

Next week on Beyond the Gates, Vanessa is going to be super busy. She has Doug and Joey to deal with and somehow, at the end of it all, she may be the one coming out on top. Meanwhile, Ashley and Derek’s relationship status changes. Does Dani and Andre’s? Inquiring minds would like to know. In addition, Nicole might have a status change in store for her and Ted as well. Kat Richardson Plays A Dangerous Game
