Joseph G Davis was born on December 21, 1873 in Sunderland, Tyne-and-Wear, England, UK into a theatrical family. His parents were Alfred and Janet Davis, Janet's maiden name being Gunnis.

The SS New York left Southampton on January 2, 1904 bound for New York, it arrived on January 10, 1904. On board were Joseph G Davis, 30, Actor, with wife Mary Isabel Davis, 27, an Actress.

He was known as James G Davis and J Gunnis-Davis.

His wife Mary Davis had been married twice before. Previously known as Mary Denton-Cardew and Mary Andrews, her maiden name was Mary Isabel Michael.

They had one son, James Irving John Gunnis-Davis born on June 7, 1906 in New York. Later known as Jack G Davis.

J Gunnis-Davis died on March 23, 1937 in Los Angeles, California, USA. He was buried in the Hollywood Memorial Cemetery, Los Angeles.
