Trekkies need no reminding, but there is a controversial line of dialogue in Nicholas Meyer's 1991 film "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" that sometimes gets mentioned in nitpicky conversations about the franchise. While investigating a crime, Spock (Leonard Nimoy) notes that "An ancestor of mine maintained that if you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains — however improbable -– must be the truth." The quote, as many know, is traditionally attributed to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's fictional detective Sherlock Holmes, and Spock's use of it left some Trekkies tantalized at the thought of a literary crossover. Is Spock declaring that he is related to Sherlock Holmes? Is Sherlock Holmes a real person in the "Star Trek" universe?
As /Film has explained before, however, that couldn't be true. On "Star Trek: The Next Generation," Sherlock Holmes is repeatedly spoken of as a fictional construct, and the crew of the Enterprise-d regularly...

In the "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" episode "A Space Adventure Hour," Lieutenant LA'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) is asked to test out a brand-new technology on the U.S.S. Enterprise: a holodeck. As Trekkies can tell you, the holodeck is a dedicated room that can create artificial, fully interactive environments, complete with sophisticated NPCs, using holographic emitters, replicator tech, and carefully calibrated force fields. The technology was first introduced, in rudimentary form, in an episode of "Star Trek: The Animated Series" in 1974, although the concept wouldn't be codified until the first episode of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" in 1987. That was when the term "holodeck" was first used.
The holodeck became the source of many, many "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episodes thereafter. Many of the holodeck concepts were created by the late Trek writer Tracy Tormé. Because it could create simulated environments, the show could have a lot...

Star Trek: Tng had plenty of great antagonists, even if the primary mission of the Enterprise was interplanetary diplomacy. Though Gene Roddenberry had banned Vulcans from being the primary villains in the show, the makers came up with new antagonists that were worthy adversaries, such as the Borg and, of course, Q.
However, there is one villain who is not native to the Star Trek franchise but is still one of the show’s best villains. Professor James Moriarty, who was first seen in Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories, was created as a holodeck villain in Tng. He quickly became sentient and attempted to take over the Enterprise multiple times.

Broadcast networks again broke into regular programming with images of smoke rising in the skies over Tel Aviv, after Iran launched retaliatory attacks on Israel for its strikes on nuclear facilities and top military leaders.
ABC News broke into regular programming, with Diane Macedo anchoring, and CBS News provided a special report with John Dickerson anchoring. Cable news networks and broadcast streaming channels quickly focused their coverage on the attacks.
Israel defense forces said that “all of Israel is under fire as Iran fires projectiles,” and later reported a second round featuring dozens of additional missiles.
The Idf said in an announcement, “Every civilian must be aware of the most protected space in their area. When an alert is received, you must enter the protected space and remain there until further notice.”
Previously: Donald Trump once again chatted by phone with news anchors, this time to express support for Israel’s military strikes on Iran.

The third season of Star Trek: Picard memorably brought back the majority of the cast of The Next Generation, a move that was celebrated by fans. Season 3 drew a near-perfect score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, which was firmly the highest of all three seasons.
There was a downside to bringing back the stars of The Next Generation, even if it resulted in very high acclaim. Per ScreenRant, Terry Matalas was doing an interview for The Sackhoff Show when addressed becoming sole showrunner for Season 3 after serving as co-showrunner alongside Akiva Goldsman for Season 2. He remembered having a vision to make Season 3 feel more like The Next Generation, and from there, all it took was getting Patrick Stewart on board. Unfortunately, the budget would not allow for Stewart's co-stars from the first two seasons to return, meaning that "sacrifices" had to be made.

Star Trek: Picard season 3 showrunner Terry Matalas explained why it was "terrible" to lose Picard's original actors to make way for the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation. Santiago Cabrera, Allison Pill, Isa Briones, and Evan Evagora were Star Trek: Picard season 1 series regulars alongside Patrick Stewart, Michelle Hurd, and Jeri Ryan. However, only Ryan and Hurd joined Stewart for Star Trek: Picard season 3, which reunited Admiral Jean-Luc Picard with his crew from the USS Enterprise-d.
Appearing on The Sackhoff Show to discuss his career, including Marvel Studios' Vision Quest and 12 Monkeys, Terry Matalas explained how he joined Star Trek: Picard as co-showrunner for season 2 with Akiva Goldsman. As sole showrunner for Star Trek: Picard season 3, Matalas told host Katee Sackhoff about having to convince Stewart to bring back the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but that season 3's budget required the "sacrifice" of losing...

In Nicholas Meyer's 1991 film "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country," Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and the crew of the Enterprise are investigating an elaborate mystery. The Enterprise was seemingly framed for firing upon a Klingon vessel during a vital diplomatic mission, and two officers from the Starfleet ship beamed over afterward and assassinated a Klingon chancellor. No one knows the identity of the assassins, nor how the Enterprise could have fired on the Klingon ship when they still have a full complement of torpedoes.
Regardless, Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) are arrested and sent to a remote Klingon prison planet, requiring Spock to find the evidence to exonerate them (as they are clearly innocent). During his investigation, Spock logically dictates to the Enterprise's crew that, "An ancestor of mine maintained that if you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains -- however improbable -– must be the truth.

Lt. Commander Data (Brent Spiner) and Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) were best friends on Star Trek: The Next Generation, and they regularly teamed up to solve problems on the USS Enterprise-d. As a unique and incredibly advanced android, Data saved the Enterprise-d many times over, and his friendship with Geordi never failed to bring out his humanity. Geordi served as the Chief Engineer on the Enterprise, and he never treated Data as less than human. Between the two of them, Data and Geordi could solve almost any engineering-related problems that arose on the Enterprise.
Data and Geordi were friends from the beginning of Star Trek: The Next Generation, and they quickly became one of the show's best pairings. Because of his Visor, Geordi literally saw Data differently than everyone else, and he proved invaluable in the android's journey to discover his humanity. Geordi not only helped repair...

That was just about the most Elsbeth opening to an episode ever! We’re back, baby, and the skies have never been campier.
It’s wild to think it’s been over seven months since the titular character sashayed onto TV screens with her own series. It’s like no time has passed.
Hats off to the Elsbeth writers for the meta-approach to acknowledging the break between seasons.
(Michael Parmelee/CBS)
Did you catch Kaya and Elsbeth talking about how surprisingly slow the last few months had been? I love a tip-toe take on breaking the fourth wall.
And a big round of applause for Elsbeth bringing back familiar faces.

Making waves throughout the 90s, The Nanny was a very popular sitcom that followed the life of Fran Fine (Fran Drescher), a boisterous fashionista, who unexpectedly becomes the nanny to the three children of Maxwell Sheffield (Charles Shaughnessy), a wealthy widowed Broadway producer. Though an unconventional nanny at first, Fran finds her own way and eventually earns the love and respect of the entire family. Coupled with other iconic characters like Niles (Daniel Davis), the smart-mouthed butler, C.C. Babcock (Lauren Lane), Maxwell's audacious business partner, as well as Sylvia Fine (Renée Taylor), Fran's overbearing yet loving mother - this is an ensemble-heavy sitcom that knows how to balance it all.

The real whereabouts of Professor Moriarty from 'Star Trek: The Next Generation' remain unknown. Moriarty's projection in 'Star Trek: Picard' battled Captain Riker and crew in an intense scene. Future return of the real Professor Moriarty in the Star Trek universe is always a possibility.
Daniel Davis briefly returned as Professor James Moriarty in Star Trek: Picard season 3, but he was only a projection from the mind of Data (Brent Spiner). Moriarty was first created by accident in Star Trek: The Next Generation season 2, episode 3, "Elementary, Dear Data," when Data and his best friend Lt. Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) were acting out a Sherlock Holmes mystery on the holodeck. When Geordi asked the computer of the USS Enterprise-d to create an adversary capable of defeating Data, the holographic Holmes villain, Moriarty, became self-aware in order to combat the android.

Captain Picard's lie in the original ending of "Elementary, Dear Data" would have changed the holodeck. The original ending of the episode would have raised questions about the ability of holodeck characters to leave. The implications of Moriarty leaving the holodeck would have affected future holodeck adventures and raised ethical concerns.
Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) lied in the original ending of an iconic episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation season 2, and his lie would have had major implications for the holodeck. For seven seasons on Tng, Captain Picard led the USS Enterprise-d as it explored the galaxy and encountered all manner of strange new aliens. Tng took the Federation even further into the future than Star Trek: The Original Series and introduced even more advanced technology, including the holodeck. The holodeck allowed the Tng writers to experiment with genre and send the Enterprise crew members to various historical time periods.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, prolific screenwriter Tracy Tormé has passed away at the age of 64. Tormé was a veteran of 1980s-era "Saturday Night Live" and wrote the TV movie "UFO Cover-Up?: Live!" in 1988, cementing his reputation among amateur ufologists everywhere. In the late '80s, Tormé was hand-picked by show creator Gene Roddenberry to contribute to the then-new "Star Trek: The Next Generation." Tormé became the show's executive story editor and creative consultant, a position he held for 24 of the show's early episodes. He is also the credited writer on 12 first-season episodes, including "Haven," "Skin of Evil," "The Arsenal of Freedom," and "The Big Goodbye."

In the 1995 "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" episode "Our Man Bashir," the title character, Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig), is in the station's holosuites, enacting a sexy, Ian Fleming-like spy story with his Cardassian paramour Garak (Andrew Robinson). Meanwhile, the rest of the station's senior staff are involved in a runabout accident, and they are beamed out of the explosion in the nick of time. The transporter, however, was also damaged, and the unique transporter patterns of the senior staff have to be stored in a secondary computer until it can be repaired. Perhaps predictably, the patterns end up in the same computer memory core that controls the holosuite, and the senior staff begin appearing -- as holograms -- in Bashir's spy adventure. If Bashir kills the holographic versions of his friends, their patterns will be deleted from the computer memory and they'll die.

A young man struggles to care for his developmentally disabled brother after the mysterious disappearance of their parents. How I Learned to Fly is a heartbreaking journey through poverty and helplessness. You empathize with their crushing despair as forlorn protagonists slip through the cracks to indigency. The film's message has merit and illustrates serious societal failures, but unfortunately veers into sluggish melodrama. How I Learned to Fly never recovers from a molasses drip first act, strange editing, and a woeful score that amplifies an already depressing narrative.

A Professor Moriarty Tng episode prevented Star Trek: Deep Space Nine from having its first baseball episode in season 1. The original idea for a baseball episode involved a holographic player walking around DS9, but it was scrapped due to similarities with the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode. "Take Me Out to the Holosuite," was worth the wait, celebrating the ensemble cast and providing a moment of light amidst the darkness of the Dominion War.
By a strange twist of fate, Star Trek: The Next Generation's Professor James Moriarty (Daniel Davis) prevented Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's first baseball episode from happening. Given how often it happens, the makers of "Star Trek: Lower Decks" and "Star Trek: Picard" appear to abide by a strict mandate that every episode includes a certain number of references to older "Star Trek" shows. Several times, when said shows seem to be falling behind this presumed quota, the showrunners will include a scene in a literal warehouse that is stacked with objects, corpses, or other tchotchkes from throughout "Trek" history. This happened in the "Lower Decks" season 2 episode "Kayshon, His Eyes Open," which featured a menagerie of stuffed creatures and skeletal remains of various "Star Trek" characters, all just hanging out in the background. Fans may remember the enormous desiccated skeleton of Spock 2 as he appeared in the "Star Trek: The Animated Series" episode "The Infinite Vulcan," as well as a Gorn skeleton, the skeleton of Abraham Lincoln (perhaps rescued from the events of "The Savage Curtain"), a taxidermied M-113 creature,...

Patrick Stewart initially didn't want Star Trek: Picard to retread The Next Generation, but was convinced after seeing familiar faces return in seasons 1 and 2. Showrunner Terry Matalas wanted to bring back the entire cast of The Next Generation for Picard season 3, and Patrick Stewart eventually warmed up to the idea. Due to budget constraints, certain things had to be cut and some of the other cast had to go away to make room for the old cast to return.

This post contains spoilers for the season 2 finale of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds."
When Scotty (Martin Quinn) showed up in the season 2 finale of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" this week, chiding Captain Pike (Anson Mount) and LA'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong) for mucking up his Gorn trap, I didn't see it coming. In fact, even as Scotty began explaining the mechanism of the tech he built in an enthusiastic Scottish brogue, it took me a few seconds to process who he was, to connect this man to one of the most beloved characters from "Star Trek: The Original Series." That's because with the Scotty introduction, "Snw" did something it hardly ever does anymore: let a surprise be a surprise.
In the current leak-heavy pop culture landscape, the process of keeping key cameos and twists in franchise films and shows under wraps has all but become a cottage industry in its own right.

Most of Star Trek: The Next Generation holds up today, but some of the earlier episodes contain elements that can only be described as cringe-worthy. Following the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the crew of the USS Enterprise-d, Tng had a lot to live up to when it premiered in 1987. It took fans a couple of years before they truly fell in love with this entirely new cast of characters. Considering how rocky the first season of Tng was, it's a bit surprising that the show managed to make it past those first couple of years.

Star Trek icon Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) has become a legendary member of the franchise and has featured in some all-time great episodes of both Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Picard. Burton was already a household name by the time he joined the final frontier, having made a named for himself with the groundbreaking miniseries Roots and the educational children's program Reading Rainbow. Geordi made his debut in the Tng pilot "Encounter At Farpoint," an eager young Ensign understandably excited for his adventures on the USS Enterprise-d to get underway.
Geordi was promoted to the ship's Chief Engineer at the start of Star Trek: The Next Generation season 2, a role he'd stay in for the remainder of Tng's seven-season run, as well as the four followup films starring the show's cast. Two decades after the final Tng film, Star Trek: Nemesis, Geordi made his triumphant return...

Star Trek: The Next Generation’s beloved android Lieutenant Commander Data (Brent Spiner) features prominently in some of Star Trek’s most enduring episodes. Introduced in Tng's first episode "Encounter At Farpoint," Data was an advanced artificial intelligence who longed to become more human. Data was incredibly intelligent and physically powerful, but he struggled to comprehend human concepts like humor and was limited in his ability to process and express emotion. Spiner's understated performance could somehow evoke laughs and tears in equal measures, easily one of the most impressive acting jobs in Star Trek history.
By Star Trek: The Next Generation season 3, the show's successful format had been established, with each episode generally focusing on one member of the ensemble cast. With the exception of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart), Data tended to get the most spotlight episodes, as the show's writers and producers honed in on Spiner's magnetic performance early in the show's run.

Acclaimed actor Fran Drescher believes a reunion for The Nanny is "inevitable" as the Emmy Award-winning sitcom prepares to celebrate its 30th anniversary later this year.
Speaking on SiriusXM's The Julie Mason Show, Drescher -- who is also the president of the Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) -- revealed that there have been talks with Sony about a potential reunion. However, how soon a reunion special can be done depends on when a resolution can be found for the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike that's gripped Hollywood. "The Nanny reunion, I think, is the most imminent because it's our 30th anniversary this November. At least pre-strike, we were in conversations with Sony, our parent company, to figure out what we could do that would be fun and exciting for the fans to tune into," Drescher said. "And hopefully the strike will be over soon enough,...

As one of the highest-rated television shows in the mid-90s, The Nanny was responsible for making Fran Drescher into a household name. Initially starting as a budding romance between Fran and Broadway producer Maxwell Sheffield (Charles Shaughnessy), the show eventually explored the unending quirks of their respective families. Mix in Niles (Daniel Davis) and his deadpan humor, along with his long-running feud with the ever-scheming C.C. Babcock (Lauren Lane), and the show became a pop-culture phenomenon. Alas, all good things must come to an end, and in its two-part finale, the flashy girl from Flushing would shake things up one last time.
