Film Nerd 2.0 stays gold with an emotional screening of 'The Outsiders'
Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell, and Ralph Macchio in Outsiders (1983)
Film Nerd 2.0 is an ongoing series in which we explore the ways we share media with our kids, particularly those of us who grew up deeply in love with movies. The media landscape has changed completely, and parents need to be more engaged than ever in what their kids watch and what they take from that entertainment. "Daddy, why did the Karate Kid Johnny die?" When "The Outsiders" was released in 1983, I was 13, and I already dearly loved the S.E. Hinton novel. It's melodramatic as hell, but that's how it feels to be a teenager, no matter what era you're talking about. I may not have had to deal with Socs or Greasers, but navigating the turbulent emotional landscape of adolescence was something that informed every line of Hinton's book. Francis Ford Coppola's film is burnished and beautiful, and it featured a young cast made up of actors on...

New "Red Dawn" Remake Location Pictures!
Back in August, we told you about the upcoming "Red Dawn" remake. Well, it's being shot right now in Pontiac, Michigan, and you can check new production pictures, as well as a daily production blog.

Check out more photos right here, and check the site right here.

Here's more info about the "Red Dawn" remake:

Remember the 1984 film "Red Dawn" starring Patrick Swayze? The film tells the story of mid-western American teenagers who band together to defend their town, and eventually their country, from invading Soviet troops.

It is the dawn of World War III.

Well, the dawn of the remake is upon us. Right now, actors Chris Hemsworth (Captain Kirk's daddy in "Star Trek" and the-man-who-would-be-Thor), Josh Peck ("Drillbit Taylor," "The Wackness"), and Adrianne Palicki ("Supernatural") are set to star.

Joining them are Josh Hutcherson ("Journey to the Center of the Earth," "Bridge to Terabithia"), Isabel Lucas ("Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen...

Cruise's Son To Revamp Swayze Film
Tom Cruise at an event for Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Tom Cruise's adopted son has landed a role in the remake of the movie that helped propel the late Patrick Swayze to stardom.

Connor Cruise, 14, will join Watchmen star Jeffrey Dean Morgan in Red Dawn.

The original 1984 movie, directed by John Milius, starred Swayze, his future Dirty Dancing partner Jennifer Grey, Charlie Sheen and C. Thomas Howell.

Reports suggest young Cruise has signed on to play Daryl, the role Darren Dalton played in the first film.

Meanwhile, producers of TV series revamp Melrose Place have confirmed Cruise will not be a part of their cast.

A representative for the show says, "There’s no truth to it."...

The Red Dawn Remake: The Chinese Are Coming! The Chinese Are Coming!
Red Dawn was one of my favorite movies as a kid. It starred my girlhood crush, C. Thomas Howell. It was released in 1984, a year after The Outsiders, and it reunited three of that movie's cast members: Howell, Patrick Swayze, and Darren Dalton. Red Dawn was, in fact, a lot like The Outsiders, only this time, the kids were armed with machine guns and RPG's instead of knives and chains, and they were fighting a much bigger enemy than the Socs. It was also a movie about America being invaded by the Soviets (and the Cubans), and group of all-American teens who become freedom fighters in the resistance against them. If you watch it now, the story seems much more about the mujahideen in 1980's Afghanistan than it does about America. But it seemed so...

The four additions join the already announced Chris Hemsworth (who’s also playing the titular hero in Marvel’s Thor), Josh Peck and Adrianne Palicki.

The original 1984 version of Red Dawn was about a bunch of Colorado High School students who team up under the banner of the school football team, The Wolverines, to fight back against Soviet and Cuban troops who invade their school. Directed by John Milius, the film starred Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell, Charlie Sheen, Lea Thompson, Brad Savage, Darren Dalton, and Jennifer Grey.

No other actors have been announced to join him yet. Filming is expected to commence in Detroit next month for a September 2010 release.

'Red Dawn' Remake Adds Four More
Josh Hutcherson, Isabel Lucas, Connor Cruise and Edwin Hodge have all joined the cast of MGM's remake Red Dawn as the four join the already cast Chris Hemsworth, Josh Peck and Adrianne Palicki. The film is a remake of the 1984 actioner about a group of teenagers who form an insurgency referred to as the Wolverines when their town is invaded -- this time by Chinese and Russian soldiers. The remake is expected to follow a similar plot thread telling the story of a group of teenagers who form an impromptu insurgency when their town is invaded by Chinese and Russian soldiers. Entertainment Weekly offers the following breakdown of the new cast: Josh Hutcherson (Journey to the Center of the Earth) is Robert Morris, the Wolverines' tech geek, responsible for operating all the communications devices. Surprisingly, he transforms into a warrior along the way too. The role was originated by C. Thomas Howell.

According to Coming Soon, Russell is in talks to star in MGM’s Red Dawn. Russell, whose last big screen outing was Quentin Tarantino’s Death Proof, would join Josh Peck (The Wackness), Adrianne Palicki (Friday Night Lights) and Chris Hemsworth, who is also slated to star in Marvel’s Thor. The film will be the directorial debut of Dan Bradley, a former stunt coordinator whose credits include Independence Day, Spider-Man 3, Crank, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. Carl Ellsworth (Disturbia, Red Eye) penned the screenplay. I know ... a slow Monday news-wise. What a concept! Leave it to The Asylum to ruin our otherwise relaxing day by releasing some stills for their upcoming redux of The Land that Time Forgot. Bastards.

Monster Island News grabbed the first look, and thanks to DC reader Avery for giving us the heads-up.

C. Thomas Howell is both directing and starring in the remake alongside Christopher Showerman and Timothy Bottoms. The script for the film was reportedly written by Darren Dalton, who also wrote The Day the Earth Stopped for The Asylum.

Dino-Madness in 'The Land That Time Forgot'
Flying under all of our radars, production is expected to begin next week on a remake of The Land That Time Forgot, based on the classic book by Edgar Rice Burroughs, later remade into a 1975 film, reports Moviehole.net. Actor C.Thomas Howell will be behind the camera directing from a script by Darren Dalton (Scanner Cop). The site reports that the flick stars Howell (The Hitcher, Gettysburg, Christopher Showerman (George of the Jungle 2, Commander and Chief), and Timothy Bottoms, who coincidentally was a star of the recent Land of the Lost TV series which aired from 1991-1992. The original takes place during World War I, where a German U-boat sinks a British ship and takes the survivors on board. After it takes a wrong turn, the submarine takes them to the unknown land of Caprona, where they find dinosaurs and neanderthals. Awesome trailer beyond the break.

MGM Roars To Life With Joss Whedon And More
The lion is hungry and it seems to be roaring again as projects like The Cabin in the Woods and a Red Dawn remake are on Mary Parent’s clip board.

Mary Parent is getting right on track in MGM these days since she was named the chair of their Worldwide Motion Picture Group back in March.

One item that she’s given the green light to on her clipboard is the project called The Cabin in the Woods.

The Cabin in the Woods is brought to us by none other than Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard. In the past these two, as a team, have brought us such successes as the ill-fated Serenity, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the Buffy spinoff Angel. Drew Goddard has some other credits to his name as writer and co-producer of Alias and wrote some other little known flick by some guy, called Cloverfield and co-produces ABC’s Lost.
