Breaking The Darkness: Exploring Legion Season 1, Episode 2
The following is a recap of the first two episodes of FX’s Legion. The first outing introduced us to David Haller (Dan Stevens), a “mutant” living in a mental hospital called Clockworks. Through non-linear storytelling and an exploration of David’s world, we learned that our protagonist has lived his life believing that his telekinetic and telepathic superpowers are a mental illness.

During the pilot, we also get acquainted with some of the major events in his recent life. These include switching bodies with his girlfriend, Syd Barrett (Rachel Keller), and escaping his mental hospital, Clockworks, during which his friend Lenny (Aubrey Plaza) dies in a wall that he may have created; returning home to his sister and talking with Lenny, his recently-deceased friend; getting captured and interrogated by a sinister governmental organization, before escaping with the help of Syd and fellow mutants; and joining up with a team of other superhumans,...

Drive-In Dust Offs: Waxwork (1988)
The late ’80s provided a veritable potpourri for horror film fanatics. Slashers had petered out, and filmmakers were keen on exploring other avenues, everything from a parasitic drug slug (Brain Damage) to possession (The Unholy), and all points in-between. Of course, mileage may vary, and many have fallen through the cracks or are best forgotten. Possibly one of the oddest of the bunch is Anthony Hickox’s Waxwork (1988), a goofball mixture of Hammer and Amicus brought kicking and screaming into the modern era with a touch o’ teen comedy sensibility. And in horror, odd never hurts—and sometimes it even helps create an unassuming delight such as this.

Produced and distributed by Vestron Pictures, who scored big the previous year with the terrifying Dirty Dancing, Waxwork was given a limited release in June in the Us and the rest of the world the following year. Made for $1,500,000, it only returned $800,000 domestically.

Roger Waters at an event for Bernard and Doris (2006)
Does ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Sync Up With Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side’? (Video)
Roger Waters at an event for Bernard and Doris (2006)
One of the great finds from the dawn of the Internet was “The Dark Side of the Rainbow,” a 1990s video that revealed that certain lyrics and musical cues from Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon” lined up with scenes from “The Wizard of Oz.” The Scarecrow, for example, does a little dance when the album reaches the song “Brain Damage” Now it turns out that “Dark Side” may be in tune with another Dark Side. Reddit user knnl has come up with a guide that shows how the album lines up with key moments from “Star Wars: The Force.

Scott Ian
The Outre Eye of Daniel Xiii Featuring Director Jack Bennett!
Scott Ian
The new video from thrash metal legends Anthrax, Blood Eagle Wings, is so ghoulishly gory you’ll never believe yer eerie eyeballs (and you can see it below, my creeps!) So naturally I had to send out an invite via carrier crow for the clips die-rector Jack Bennett to join us for a lil’ convo in the Crypt o’ Xiii, and wadda ya know, here he is now!

Famous Monsters. Let’s get right down to brass tacks, Jack! How did the story for Blood Eagle Wings evolve? Jack Bennett. It just began with Scott Ian sending me the song and saying it was about how civilizations evolve throughout history on a foundation of violence. He only had two stipulations about the video; he didn’t want it to be performance-based, so no band playing the song, and there had to be someone actually blood eagle’d onscreen, which I had to look up.

Jones has been in a coma since police found her battered, bruised body on Feb. 14 - her 23rd birthday. The following day, Miami police arrested 35-year-old Byron Mitchell on attempted murder charges. Watch the Short Film ‘The Grey Matter’
“Yeah, well, you’re not my friend. You’re a parasite.” When desk jockey Simon tells this to his newfound companion, Brian, there’s more truth to it than you might imagine. Blending dark comedy with creeping horror and palpable practical effects, brothers Peter and Luke McCoubrey’s new short film, The Grey Matter, is a delightfully bizarre head trip, and we have it for Daily Dead visitors to watch.

From co-director Peter McCoubrey: “The film is a dark horror comedy starring Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Girls, John Adams) as an office stiff who, after suffering a mysterious injury, finds himself stumbling through a courtship with a coworker played by Lucy Walters (Shame, Power)… but something strange is afoot. With the romantic guidance of a creature unearthed from his head wound, he finds himself stumbling through an absurd, increasingly unorthodox, and potentially fatal attraction.

I work with my brother Luke who...

1980s Inspired Dark Horror Comedy Short - The Grey Matter
I've got an amazing short film for you to watch today called "The Grey Matter." It's a morbidly funny horror comedy that was directed by Peter McCoubrey and Luke McCoubrey.

The story follows "an office stiff who, after suffering a mysterious injury, finds himself stumbling through a courtship with a coworker… but something strange is afoot. With the romantic guidance of a creature unearthed from his head wound, he finds himself stumbling through an absurd, increasingly unorthodox, and potentially fatal attraction."

The movie was inspired by the genre movies of the 1980s. Peter has this to say in a statement regarding the film:

"We’ve always loved the way they [80s films] often bounced around from horror — to comedy — to enigmatic — to just flat out weird… as well as their inventive use of practical FX. Films like An American Werewolf in London, Return of the Living Dead, Big Trouble in Little China,...

Exclusive Interview with 'Morris County' Director Matthew Garrett
Matthew Garrett is a director who hit the ground running with his first short film Ellie (2006), an unsettling movie that gathered much praise when it made the film festival rounds. His second film, the suspenseful and enigmatic Beating Hearts (2010), won Best Short Film at the Boston Underground Film Festival before it found a home here at FEARnet (click here to watch it). Garrett's first feature film is an anthology called Morris County, slated for release later this year. Garrett kindly took some time to discuss with FEARnet his past, present, and future as a film director. FEARnet: What inspired the story of your first film, Ellie? Garrett: It's difficult to discuss the news story that inspired the film without giving away part of the ending, but I will say that the themes of self-destruction, sexual abuse, and the inherent hypocrisy of organized religion were definitely on my mind. Top 10 Films about Addiction
The Panic in Needle Park

Written by Joan Dion and John Gregory Dunne; based on the book by James Mills

Directed by Jerry Schatzberg

USA, 1971

Al Pacino gives a riveting performance as Bobby, an energetic street hustler and heroin addict who forms a bizarre, yet accepting relationship with a homeless woman, Helen, played by Kitty Winn. The Panic in Needle Park is a gut-wrenching expose into the drug culture in New York City. American films of the late sixties, such as Easy Rider, Performance and The Trip, portrayed the edgy glamour and counter-culture boom of the sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll revolution, but after the release of The Panic in Needle Park, filmmakers forecast the downward spiral of addiction. Sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll transgressed into heroin, prostitution and jail. To this day, no other film has topped the realistic portrayal of the drug culture. Shot in a documentary-like fashion,...

Emmanuelle Escourrou in Baby Blood (1990)
The Unseen – 'Baby Blood'
Emmanuelle Escourrou in Baby Blood (1990)
This week’s installment comes from France circa 1990. This title is not excessively hard to track down, but yet is another that many horror fans may have missed or overlooked. I present to you... Baby Blood.

I must confess even I missed this title. I did not discover it until last year when I was pregnant. Though many women may, rightfully so, chose not to watch pregnancy-themed horror films while they have a bun in the oven, my sick brain was drawn to them. After viewing Rosemary’s Baby, The Devil Within, and It’s Alive, I found myself searching for something rare, something I had never seen before. Thus, I found Baby Blood. Written and directed by Alan Robak, Baby Blood focuses on a circus performer named Yanka. After being abused by her lover she flees the circus and sets out on her own. Yanka thinks she is pregnant...

Meet “Zombie Ed”
Design by Brett Lyerla Bhold-designs
I always like taking a look at the indie horror scene. For instance, Zombie Ed from Brain Damage Films. It sounds like a slacker zombie comedy, basically. Read on the for the synopsis, links to buy, and the trailer.

Loser Ed has a lame job, a beater car, a crappy apartment and no hope of a girlfriend. Ed doesn’t think things could get any worse for him until the day he woke up and found he had Gone Zombie. Can Ed become the zombie he was born to be?

The film stars William C. Cutting, Kelly Petering, Trista Robinson, Myles Mclane, Melissa Bacelar, Kim Sønderholm, Pedro Mendoza, Tom Nyman, Marcus Proctor, and Devorah Lynne Dishington (name of the week nominee!).

Watch Pink Floyd's The Dark Side Of The Rainbow
For years we've heard about how awesome it is watching the classic movie The Wizard of Oz synched up with Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. I remember doing this in high school, but wasn't really impressed. Sure, there were a few moments that worked with the sync up, but in the end it didn't deliver entertainment value I was expecting. I imagine you'd have to be high out of your mind for this to work like it's supposed to. Not only has it been The Dark Side of the Rainbow called but it's also known as The Dark Side of Oz,

According to Wikipedia, "In August 1995, the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette published the first mainstream media article about the "synchronicity", citing the Usenet discussion group. Soon afterward, several fans began creating websites in which they touted the experience and tried to comprehensively catalogue the corresponding moments. A...

Short Film Review: Roid Rage
Roid Rage

Stars: Zach Canfield, John Russo, Ben Evans, John Archer Lundgren, Grayson Lauffenburger, Randi Lee Krasny | Written and directed by Ryan Lightbourn

“Sammy Jenkins was a simple man who lived a simple life, until a genetic mutation sent his world spiraling out of control. Now, being hunted by the men responsible for his deformity, as well as the FBI, Sammy must fight back with his unique abilities in order to survive. Those unique abilities include the giant killer hemorrhoid growing out of his ass.”

Just when I thought I’d seen it all, along comes a killer hemorrhoid movie to totally mess with my head! Taking a cue from Frank Henlotter’s Brain Damage, Ryan Lightbourn’s Roid Rage features a down at heel protagonist who, thanks to circumstances beyond his control, becomes an out of control killer who must feed his new-found deformity – in this case a killer...

Midnight Madness Invades The Tiff Bell Lightbox
Sure, it's summer and you could spend your time outside. But why would you do that when you could enjoy exploding heads, people being punched, punk rock zombies, and widespread bloodshed on the big screen? This summer the Tiff Bell Lightbox is launching a Saturday Late Night series titled, appropriately enough, Best Of Midnight Madness featuring a slate of films culled from the annals of Tiff's hugely popular Midnight Madness program. What counts as the best? Well, how about rare big screen appearances by Brain Damage - which kicks the series off June 11th - followed by Dazed And Confused, Man Bites Dog, Opera, Heaven, Tetsuo: The Iron Man, Wild Zero, Ichi The Killer, Bubba Ho-Tep, Spl and A L'Interieur? That'd do it, I think. Check...

New Transformers: Dark Of The Moon Image Suggests That The Movie Is A Pink Floyd Rock Opera
Prepare, Michael Bay fans. The first theatrical trailer for Transformers: Dark of the Moon is almost here. For the past few days we've been posting images from the movie, including the new Decepticon known as Shockwave, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, and Bumblebee, but today's image is a bit of a mystery. Apple has released the new still from the film and...holy shit I just figured it out. The title of the movie is Dark of the Moon? They release an image of a Great Gig In The Sky? Transformers 3 is actually a rock opera featuring the music of Pink Floyd. I'm also going to wager a guess that the first song they sing will be "Brain Damage" - it's the perfect note to get things started on after the noisy trainwreck that was Transformers 2. Check out the image below and see it in high res over on Apple.

Eminem's The Slim Shady LP, 12 Years Later
Considering he is one of the biggest and most influential stars currently working in the music world, it's strange to think about people having doubts about Eminem's viability. The 12 years that have elapsed since the debut of The Slim Shady LP (which was released on this day in 1999) have certainly proven otherwise, but when Eminem first appeared on the scene, most everybody had it in the back of their minds that he would be a novelty act who wouldn't be able to survive to a second album, even despite his obvious skills and incredible pedigree. A dozen years on, what does The Slim Shady LP tell us?

Back in late 1998, the first exposure most people had to Eminem was via "My Name Is," the rapper's introductory single that seemed to be everywhere (though it was a pretty straightforward hip-hop track, it got spins on modern rock radio simply because it...

And the Title of the Next Transformers Movie Is...
Collider has broken the story that the next exciting chapter in the Transformers saga shall be titled...

*Drumroll*

Transformers: The Dark of the Moon

No word yet on how this is linked to the plot of the film, but one would imagine the band Optimus Prime is in starts playing different tunes, and carnage ensues.

When not quoting the song Brain Damage, or causing it, Michael Bay's threequel is currently shooting and will be released on July 11th of next year.

Somewhere, Megan Fox is shedding a tear.

Eminem Introduces Slim Shady To The World: Wake-Up Video
Even if you're one of the best rappers alive and one of the most recognizable superstars in the music world, you have to start somewhere. On this day back in 1999, Eminem kicked off what became a dominant run through the music industry when he dropped his debut album The Slim Shady LP.

The single "My Name Is" had already been getting a ton of play on MTV and on radio (including modern rock radio, which treated "My Name Is" as a novelty record as though it were a "Weird Al" tune), so there was plenty of buzz surrounding the album by the time it dropped. Most people could see that Eminem had star power, a cheeky sense of humor and charisma to spare, but what The Slim Shady LP best revealed were Em's skills as an Mc. He was able to harness Dr. Dre's production better than anybody since Snoop Dogg,...

Chemical Wedding, Epitaph and more DVD news
• Fango got word that Anchor Bay will release Julian Doyle’s Chemical Wedding, under the new title of Crowley, in late first quarter 2009. Doyle also scripted the movie with Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson.

The movie stars Simon Callow as a Cambridge University professor who becomes possessed by the spirit of notorious occultist Aleister Crowley. Kal Weber, Lucy Cudden, Jud Charlton, Paul McDowell and John (Mirrors) Shrapnel co-star. Disc details haven’t been solidified, but we’re told there will be an audio commentary and behind-the-scenes footage. The Bay also alerted Fango that it’ll put the 20th Anniversary Edition of Hellraiser out on Blu-ray in April, with all the extras from the DVD. And the company’s cover art for Gilles Paquet-Brenner’s Walled In, starring Mischa Barton and set to hit disc March 17, has surfaced; we’ll have the specs on that one soon.
