Billionaires and AI are the true villains in the Mountainhead trailer from Succession creator Jesse Armstrong
Jesse Armstrong
Billionaires aren’t exactly at the top of everyone’s nice list nowadays. With that in mind, perhaps now is the perfect time for Succession creator Jesse Armstrong to bring a trailer for his elite-lampooning film Mountainhead to the forefront. The HBO movie centers on four billionaires – Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith, Ramy Youssef – who after escaping to a posh palace in the mountains, discover one of them has unknowingly unleashed chaos.

In the latest Mountainthead trailer, a news report says, “U.N officials are now openly attributing the recent uptick in ethnic tension to powerful new generative AI tools,” pointing toward a colossal blunder on behalf of Cory Michael Smith’s character, Venis. As Venis’s three cohorts brainstorm solutions to his problem, tensions rise as it becomes evident that Venis’s negligence could be the root of their growing concerns. To escape blame, the foursome mounts...

Second ‘Mountainhead’ Trailer Suggests AI (and Its Billionaire Characters) Are the Villains
Image
As the world outside their isolated retreat starts to go sideways, the four billionaires at the center of HBO’s movie Mountainhead confront their possible roles in causing the events.

Well, maybe “confront” is too strong. “Deny” might be better, based on a second trailer for the film from Succession creator Jesse Armstrong. When a news report says “U.N officials are now openly attributing the recent uptick in ethnic tension to powerful new generative AI tools” from a company headed by one of the four central characters, Venis (Cory Michael Smith).

“I just want to say, this is not on you, Venis,” the gathering’s host, Souper (Jason Schwartzman), tells Venis — to which he replies, “Obviously it’s not on me. Why would you even say that?” Watch the trailer below.

The new trailer builds on an earlier clip and states a little more clearly that the group — Steve Carell...

Jesse Armstrong is back at HBO — just not with a “Succession” spinoff. The series creator makes his feature directorial debut with HBO Original film “Mountainhead,” which takes a more head-on approach to satirizing the elite. Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Ramy Youssef, and Cory Michael Smith star as four tech moguls whose bro trip gets derailed after a global financial meltdown ensues. Did they cause it? With a combined net worth of nearly $400 billion between the pals, who is really to say…

The film’s official logline reads: “A group of billionaire friends get together against the backdrop of a rolling international crisis.” Armstrong writes, directs, and executive produces the film, which was shot in Park City, Utah.

The project also reunites seven-time Emmy winner and Oscar-nominated Armstrong with his fellow “Succession” producers Frank Rich, Lucy Prebble, and producer/director Mark Mylod. Both Rich and Armstrong have overall deals at HBO.

Image
Following the success of Succession, the show's creator Jesse Armstrong has continued his collaboration with HBO. The creator has switched from TV shows to an HBO Original film titled Mountainhead.

‘Succession’ Creator Takes Down Tech Bros With Tense and Twisty ‘Mountainhead’ Trailer
Image
Get ready to ascend the heights, because HBO and Max have released the first teaser trailer for Mountainhead, the upcoming dark comedy film from Succession creator Jesse Armstrong. The film depicts a quartet of extremely wealthy tech gurus who get sucked into the middle of a global crisis. The project stars four high-profile actors that make up the egotistical group:Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Ramy Youssef, and Cory Michael Smith.

The trailer depicts the four friends arriving at a massive ski lodge for a weekend getaway; the group has nearly $400 billion between them, so taking some time for the slopes isn't that unusual. In what appears to be a microcosm of current events, something happens when the global economy starts to shift. "Are you guys getting this? Panic buying and violence?" asks Jeff (Youssef). But the others don't seem to be too concerned. "I think that's why I'm so excited about these atrocities.

HBO’s ‘Mountainhead’ Trailer Puts Four Billionaires at the End of the World
Image
HBO has been fairly tight-lipped about the plot of its forthcoming original film Mountainhead, from Succession creator Jesse Armstrong. Up until now, the only concrete details have come from a one-sentence logline that reads, “A group of billionaire friends get together against the backdrop of a rolling international crisis.”

A trailer for the movie, released Tuesday morning, hints that the international crisis may be — at least partly — the billionaire friends’ fault. The movie finds the quartet — tech executives Randall (Steve Carell), Hugo Van Yalk aka Souper (Jason Schwartzman), Venis (Cory Michael Smith) and Jeff (Ramy Youssef) gathering at the moutaintop retreat that gives the movie its title. News reports hint at “panic buying and violence,” as Youssef’s Jeff says, and conflict escalates across the globe.

Jeff also accuses Venis’ “platform” — the parallel seems to be Meta, in this case — of spreading “unfalsifiable deepfakes, massive fraud, market instability” as Randall and Souper seem increasingly uncomfortable.

Steve Carell and His Billionaire Friends Enjoy a Luxe Escape as Global Violence Unfolds in ‘Mountainhead’ Teaser
Image
The world might be burning in “Mountainhead,” but rest assured tech billionaires, played by Steve Carell, Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith and Ramy Youssef, are not sitting idling by — they are enjoying a luxe mountain escape.

In the trailer for Jesse Armstrong’s new HBO film, four presidents of tech, Randall (Carell), Souper (Schwartzman), Venis (Smith) and Jeff (Youssef) reunite for a vacation amid a rolling international crisis.

“You guys getting this? Panic buying and violence?” Youssef’s Jeff said in the teaser, while Carell’s Randall admits, “this is a serious moment.”

“I think that’s why I’m so excited about these atrocities — I’m thinking about all of the people who are not killing each other,” Randall said.

While the crew is aware “nations are teetering, both politically and economically,” the stakes are upped when the group gets a request to speak with the president of the United States.

‘Mountainhead’ Teaser: Jesse Armstrong Is Back to Mocking Billionaires on HBO
Image
How do you follow a cultural phenomenon like “Succession”? If you’re Jesse Armstrong, it doesn’t hurt to build on what you do best: making fun of childish billionaires on HBO.

Armstrong returns to the premium cable network in May with “Mountainhead,” an HBO original movie he wrote and directed with a premise that could be ripped right out of “Succession.” The film follows four tech moguls with a combined net worth of nearly $400 billion who meet in an alpine mansion for a weekend of skiing and poker. But their bros’ getaway is soon derailed when they find themselves fighting over a global meltdown that may or may not be caused — or at the very least, amplified and expedited — by their own social media platforms.

Additional cast members for “Mountainhead” include Hadley Robinson, Andy Daly, Ali Kinkade, Daniel Oreskes, David Thompson, Amie MacKenzie, and Ava Kostia. The film is executive produced by Armstrong,...

Ramy Youssef Says Jesse Armstrong’s HBO Film ‘Mountainhead’ Is ‘Funny in the Way “Succession” Is’
Image
Fans missing the bone-dry wit of “Succession” may finally quench their thirst with Jesse Armstrong’s new HBO satire “Mountainhead.”

While promoting his new adult animated series “#1 Happy Family USA,” Ramy Youssef — one of the leads in the “Succession” creator’s feature film debut — called the project “funny in the same way ‘Succession’ is.”

“‘Succession’ is one of the best comedies ever made — and this film is certainly funny in the same way,” Youssef told Variety on Wednesday night at the “#1 Happy Family USA” premiere in New York. “Jesse’s writing is on another level. It’s really hard to find something of that caliber, so getting to do it was such a joy.”

“Mountainhead” follows a group of billionaire friends as they convene against the backdrop of an international crisis. The ensemble of snowed-in billionaires also includes Steve Carell as Randall, Jason Schwartzman as Souper/Hugo Van Yalk,...

‘Mountainhead’ ski jumps into top 5 for Best TV Movie Emmy, but its actors still have an uphill climb
Image
Less than a week after HBO's original movie Mountainhead received a title and a premiere date, it's already ski jumped into the top five in Gold Derby's Best TV Movie Emmy predictions.

Why? The telefilm about a group of billionaire friends who deal with a financial crisis while at a swanky ski resort has an awards-worthy pedigree both behind the scenes and in front of the camera. Mountainhead is written and directed by Jesse Armstrong, the seven-time Emmy winner for Succession. This marks his directorial debut.

The cast is led by Steve Carell , Jason Schwartzman, Cory Michael Smith, and Ramy Youssef as the four main billionaires. They're joined by Hadley Robinson, Andy Daly, Ali Kinkade, Daniel Oreskes, David Thompson, Amie MacKenzie, and Ava Kostia.

Recent Emmy history has been a wipeout for made-for-television movies, particularly in the acting categories, as the format has mostly been abandoned in favor of limited series.

Jesse Armstrong's HBO Film 'Mountainhead' Gets Release Date and First Look
Image
Successioncreator Jesse Armstrong is swapping the billionaires of New York City for, well, the billionaires of the mountains in his upcoming HBO film, Mountainhead. The newly titled project is coming sooner than expected, as it is set to premiere on HBO on May 31 (and will also be available to stream on Max). It seems the team working on the movie will move mountains to get it in front of audiences by that date, considering that filming on the project only began in March and the cameras are still rolling. However, production is expected to wrap this week.

The first-look images (seen below) offer a teaser of Armstrong's movie by setting a very snowy and star-studded scene. The first photo depicts a well-appointed house in the mountains with a picturesque view, standing in isolation surrounded by trees. The second snap takes onlookers inside the building where the movie's lead characters are gathered,...

Jesse Armstrong’s HBO Movie Gets Title, May Premiere Date
Image
The HBO movie from Succession creator Jesse Armstrong has a title and a premiere date — and, it appears, a very tight filming schedule.

The movie — about four billionaire friends who gather during an international crisis — is called Mountainhead. HBO says it will debut on May 31, which also happens to be the final day of Emmy eligibility for the 2024-25 season. Production is set to wrap this week.

That’s an extremely short turnaround for the film, which began filming less than a month ago in Park City, Utah. With such a short schedule, it’s likely that the movie — Armstrong’s first as a director — doesn’t include too many locations or complicated setups. Still, given the cast and auspices, it’s arguably HBO’s highest-profile original movie in several years.

All 3 The Big Bang Theory Actors Who Appear In Night Court
Image
Several The Big Bang Theory stars appear in the revival of Night Court. The remade version of Night Court shares several things in common with the original version, which starred Harry Anderson as Judge Harry Stone and dealt with a variety of quirky courthouse employees and visitors to the court. The new version of the series is connected to The Big Bang Theory in several ways, chief among them that the leading role, Judge Abby Stone, is played by Melissa Rauch, who played Bernadette on the popular sitcom about a group of scientists.

Although Rauch is the only The Big Bang Theory alum in the Night Court season 3 cast, the series has other connections to her previous sitcom. Notably, two of Rauch's fellow co-stars have visited Night Court so far. These actors did not play their characters from The Big Bang Theory, but the episodes were considered reunions because of...

Every Version Of Harvey Dent In DC Movies & TV Shows Ranked
Image
Harvey Dent is now one of DC's most widely adapted characters in movies and TV shows, though not all renditions rank the same. In typical Batman lore, Harvey Dent is Gotham's District Attorney before an acid attack by Salvatore Maroni severely disfigures half of his face. This causes Dent to descend into a life of crime as Two-Face, one of Batman's most iconic rogues' gallery members obsessed with duality and leaving fateful decisions to the flip of a coin.

Dent doesn't typically boast any superpowers and instead adds to the litany of Gotham's gun-toting crime bosses. This doesn't make the character any less compelling, however, as his striking visage is among the most recognizable when it comes to DC villains. His obsessive characterization, meanwhile, is another of his most compelling features, often making him a somewhat sympathetic DC villain. Throughout his numerous adaptations, some movies and TV shows hit...

10 Best Animated Sci-Fi Comedy TV Shows
Image
Animation has always been a great medium to explore the boundless potential of sci-fi stories, and there are plenty of comedy shows which seize the freedom of animation. Animation and sci-fi go hand-in-hand, since both are interested in that which can't be ordinarily depicted using Earthly means. Animated sci-fi comedies have the opportunity of using the entire universe as their setting.

Ever since The Jetsons premiered in the 1960s, there have been animated sci-fi comedies, although most of these were targeted toward children. The arrival of Futurama in 1999 was a massive game-changer. After The Simpsons ushered in a new dawn for adult-oriented animated comedy, Futurama set the tone for sci-fi comedies. Since then, the 21st century has seen a boom in animated sci-fi comedies, with new classics such as Rick and Morty pushing the genre forward.

Kite Man Creator Explains Recasting Giancarlo Esposito's Lex Luthor With Lance Reddick

For the most part, the same voice cast members are reprising their roles for Kite Man: Hell Yeah!, the new Harley Quinn spinoff series. However, there was one notable recasting which came down to scheduling issues.

In Harley Quinn, the supervillain Lex Luthor was voiced by Better Call Saul star Giancarlo Esposito. Late actor Lance Reddick took over the role for Kite Man: Hell Yeah!, which was previously announced. This marks the very last television role for Reddick, who passed away unexpectedly in 2023. In an interview with The Direct, series co-creator Dean Lorey confirmed that scheduling conflicts forced the recasting, but that the show's team was nevertheless thrilled with how Reddick was ultimately "perfect" for the part.
