As the 2024-2025 television season winds down, ABC is already looking to the future, renewing veteran dramas “9-1-1,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Rookie” and “Will Trent,” as well as freshman sitcom “Shifting Gears.”
The five shows join the already renewed comedy “Abbott Elementary” and breakout hit drama “High Potential” as scripted shows returning to the network for the 2025-2026 television season.
In terms of new shows, the network has handed a straight-to-series order to “9-1-1: Nashville,” a spinoff of “9-1-1” that will star Chris O’Donnell.
“9-1-1” Renewed for Season 9
Produced by 20th Television in association with Ryan Murphy Television and Brad Falchuk Teley-Vision, and set to enter its ninth season (third on ABC), “9-1-1” was created by Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, and explores the high-pressure experiences of first responders — including police officers, firefighters and dispatchers — who are thrust into the most frightening, shocking and heart-stopping conditions. ABC has renewed freshman comedy series Shifting Gears, starring Tim Allen and Kat Dennings, for a second season. According to sources, the pickup is for 10 episodes, which is not atypical for a series that has launched in midseason and matches the sitcom’s Season 1 order.
Shifting Gears was one of two ABC series on the bubble this spring, along with fellow freshman Doctor Odyssey. The drama starring Joshua Jackson and Don Johnson now remains the only ABC scripted series in limbo as the network today also renewed — as expected — veterans Grey’s Anatomy, 9-1-1, The Rookie as well as third-year drama Will Trent, which join previously picked up High Potential and Abbott Elementary.
Marking the return to ABC of Last Man Standing and Home Improvement star Allen, Shifting Gears got off to a red-hot start, with the pilot episode logging almost 17M cross-platform viewers over its first week for ABC...

ABC is renewing four dramas and one comedy series, Variety has learned.
The Disney-owned broadcaster has picked up new seasons of “9-1-1,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Rookie,” and “Will Trent” as well as “Shifting Gears.” The renewals will bring “9-1-1” to Season 9, “Grey’s Anatomy” to Season 22, “The Rookie” to Season 8, “Shifting Gears” to Season 2, and “Will Trent” to Season 4.
ABC had previously announced renewals for both “High Potential” and the hit comedy “Abbott Elementary.” That means that the only current ABC show still awaiting word on a renewal is “Doctor Odyssey.” ABC has opted not to order any pilots this season, but did order the “9-1-1” spinoff “9-1-1: Nashville” straight-to-series, with Chris O’Donnell set for a lead role.
Of today’s renewals, only “Shifting Gears” was seen as a toss up for a new season. The Tim Allen-Kat Dennings multi-cam suffered a noticeable drop off in the ratings since its January debut.

Tim Allen is shifting gears by bringing in another stand-up comedian to help generate some laughs on his ABC sitcom.
Jay Leno will make a cameo as himself in episode 109 of Shifting Gears, Allen’s new comedy in which he plays a stubborn, widowed owner of a classic car restoration shop. Leno brings his car into Allen’s shop, Parker Customs, for repair. No word on whether car came from Leno’s actual fleet.
The episode will air March 12.
Kat Dennings plays Allen’s daughter in the comedy that revolves around Allen’s Matt, who allows her and his grandkids to move into his house. The rest of Shifting Gears main cast includes Seann William Scott as Gabriel, who also works at the shop, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell as Stitch, Maxwell Simkins as Carter and Barrett Margolis as Georgia.

Tim Allen comedies are still a big draw, apparently, because the premiere of his latest series Shifting Gears has set an audience record for ABC.
In the seven days since it debuted on January 8, the first episode has amassed nearly 17M multi-platform viewers across ABC, Hulu, Hulu on Disney+ and digital platforms, Disney says. That’s a 173% lift over the episode’s already fairly impressive same-day audience of 6.2M.
It is now ABC’s strongest series debut since The Conners in 2018 as well as the broadcaster’s most-watched streaming debut to date (based on streaming-only numbers across Hulu and Disney+).
That 17M figure encapsulates linear encores, without which the episode is sitting around 12.5M viewers — still up 101% from the same-day audience.

ABC has released a trailer for its forthcoming comedy series Shifting Gears, which puts Tim Allen in dad mode once more — although the family he heads is a fractured one.
The series, which premieres Jan. 8, centers on Allen’s Matt and his estranged adult daughter, Riley (Kat Dennings), who moves back home with her two kids (Maxwell Simkins and Barrett Margolis) — and the classic Pontiac Gto she took from her dad — when her life hits a rough patch.
Shifting Gears marks a return to ABC for Allen, who led one of the biggest sitcoms of the 1990s in Home Improvement and starred in six seasons of Last Man Standing for the network (the latter show then moved to Fox for three more seasons). ABC placed a series order for Shifting Gears in July.

James Denton’s “Desperate Housewives” character Mike Delfino was shot 12 years ago, much to the dismay of many of the show’s fans. But when asked by People which episode of the series was his favorite, Denton immediately pointed to Delfino’s demise. “The one where I got shot,” he said. “It’s always fun to get chills on camera.”
Denton also told the outlet about the rigging and special effects that made the shooting death believable on camera. “You have one tube up one leg of your pants that has the blood to your chest, and you have a wire running down the other leg. This guy is out in the bushes with a detonator to set the blast off,” he explained.

It’s a chilly February evening on the Paramount lot as Kelsey Grammer transforms into Frasier Crane for the first time in nearly two decades. It’s an emotional moment on set, both nostalgic and anticipatory. The sets are new, as is every cast member besides Grammer. But behind the camera, legendary director James Burrows shares some continuity with Grammer — having been there from the character’s 1984 beginning on “Cheers.”
Even months later, with the 2023 “Frasier” now on the air (via Paramount+), Grammer gets choked up when asked about what returning to the character — and having institutions like Burrows (one of the original “Cheers” creators) back on board — means to him.
“It’s a piece of personal heaven for me that Jimmy Burrows is still in my life,” Grammer says, his voice cracking just a bit. “And I will always feel that way about him. He’s really helpful. And...

“The Wonder Years” reboot will not return for a third season at ABC, TheWrap has learned.
The network has chosen to cancel the sitcom starring Elisha “Ej” Williams, Dulé Hill and Saycon Sengbloh, which ran for two seasons. The cancellation comes just over a month after the coming-of-age drama aired the finale for its sophomore season, which saw the Williams family head to Disneyland.
Debuting its first season in September 2021, the reimagining of the ’80s series of the same name similarly centered on the Black middle-class Williams family during the late ’60s in Montgomery, Al. Don Cheadle narrated the series an adult Dean Williams while Elisha “Ej” Williams played 12-year-old Dean onscreen.
In May 2022, controversy came over the show as executive producer and director Fred Savage — who starred in the original series — was fired after multiple allegations of inappropriate conduct. While specifics regarding the misconduct were not revealed at the time,...

Exclusive: ABC has opted not to proceed with a third season of The Wonder Years. The news comes a month after the reboot of the classic coming-of-age comedy wrapped its Season 2 run on the network.

The Wonder Years continues to make us laugh in its second season on ABC.
The successful reboot continues tonight with an episode titled "Like a Boss."
TV Fanatic scored an exclusive first look at one of the many comical scenes ahead, and it features one of the true constants of the series:
Dulé Hill's perfect comedy timing.
We don't want to delve too far into what happens in the clip because then you won't have much incentive to watch.
But we can talk about the episode.
"After Lillian's boss announces budget cuts, she is forced to make a decision and enforce boundaries between her personal and professional life," the description reads.
"Dean and Cory's friendship hits a few speed bumps as they work together for the boxcar derby."

Here's why Desperate Housewives shockingly killed Mike Delfino (James Denton) in season 8. Susan Meyer's (Teri Hatcher) romance with Mike was a big part of all 8 seasons of Desperate Housewives, and Mike's death is one of the most tragic storylines of all. No main or minor character was safe thanks to the high kill count on Desperate Housewives, but Mike's death was still a devastating moment.
Donny (Sal Landi) shoots and kills Mike in season 8, episode 16, "You Take For Granted." He drives by Mike and Susan's home, screams "Delfino!" and points his gun in his direction. Susan and Mike's neighbor Renee Perry (Vanessa Williams)'s boyfriend Ben Faulkner owes Donny a lot of money, as Donny helped him finance his real estate career, and Donny (Charles Mesure) doesn't accept that Renee attempts to pay the money back. This is one of the saddest deaths on Desperate Housewives as it happens...

ABC has pushed the second season premiere of comedy series The Wonder Years to summer 2023. The network says a specific premiere date will be announced at a later time.
The comedy, which had originally been slated to return in midseason, wasn’t included in ABC’s midseason schedule released earlier today.
Although it will be awhile before we see a second season, ABC announced additional guest casting. In addition to previously announced Patti Labelle, Wayne Brady, Tituss Burgess, Donald Faison, Phoebe Robinson and Bradley Whitford are among the actors set for guest-starring roles.
Inspired by the 1988 series of the same name, The Wonder Years is an original coming-of-age comedy that tells the story of the Williams family during the late 1960s. The series is narrated through the point of view of imaginative 12-year-old Dean, as he navigates growing up in a Black middle-class family in Montgomery, Alabama, and the friendship,...

“Will & Grace” co-creator Max Mutchnick admits he and David Kohan had no idea there was such a high demand for the series to return. “We’ve written it small, and we’ve thought of it small,” says Mutchnick, “and maybe that’s been the thing that’s worked for us because we’re not getting ahead of ourselves.” The NBC sitcom starring Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Sean Hayes, and Megan Mullally originally ran from 1998-2006, and it returned in 2017 after 11 years for what was initially supposed to be a 10-episode run. That morphed into a 16-episode season, and then a second- and third-season renewal. Watch our exclusive video interview with Mutchnick and Kohan above.

CBS has canceled comedy “Superior Donuts” after two seasons.
“Superior Donuts” takes place in a small Chicago donut shop, where curmudgeonly owner Arthur (Judd Hirsch) finds his 40-year routine changing when enterprising go-getter Franco (Jermaine Fowler) fast-talks his way into Arthur’s life, becoming his only employee.

It’s official — CBS is not picking up a third season of Superior Donuts, its multi-camera workplace comedy starring Jermaine Fowler and Judd Hirsch.
After a decent ratings start last spring, goosed by a plum lead-in from The Big Bang Theory, Superior Donuts was renewed for a second season with some casting changes, including the addition of Diane Guerrero, and got a full-season Season 2 pickup last fall.
CBS had been looking to make changes on Monday where the network was once the dominant force with hit comedies and CSI: Miami at 10 Pm. CBS’ fortunes on the night have declined over the past couple of years, hitting a low point this season. Superior Donuts was the lowest rated of the three returning CBS series on Monday which were in a renewal contention, averaging a 1.1 adults 18-49 rating (most recent)
While the cast of the sitcom has been well received, the show didn’t quite gel together.

CBS’s “Superior Donuts” is tackling immigration issues in what may be the series’ most relevant episode ever. Monday night’s episode, “The ICEmen Cometh,” was inspired by star Diane Guerrero’s own experience with her family and deportation.
“We learned about Diane’s story when we first talked to her about joining the show, and we were struck by how brutal it was to see this hot-button political issue play out on a personal level, where a family gets torn apart and there’s nothing they can do about it,” said executive producer Bob Daily.
In the episode, Guerrero’s character, Sofia, enlists her pal Franco (Jermaine Fowler) to help hide her undocumented brother Rafael (Erik Rivera) when U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement starts conducting raids in their uptown Chicago neighborhood. The Ice presence has everyone on edge, including donut shop owner Arthur (Judd Hirsch), whose store is where Franco secretly hides Rafael,...

The cast and creators of NBC’s “Will & Grace” revival gathered for a panel discussion at Paleyfest on Saturday, March 17. Stars Eric McCormack, Debra Messing, Sean Hayes, and Megan Mullally were on hand, as were creators David Kohan and Max Mutchnick and director James Burrows, who has helmed every single episode of the series. The event was moderated by Dan Bucatinsky, who has guest-starred twice on the show (once in 2000 and once in 2018) as a persistent suitor Will can’t seem to get rid of. Listen to their entire 45-minute Q&A above.

CBS has locked up Orange Is the New Black‘s Diane Guerrero! The actress is joining the cast of Superior Donuts as a series regular in Season 2, TVLine has learned.
Guerrero, who will be introduced in the sitcom’s Oct. 30 premiere, will play Sofia, a young Uptown gentrifier who parks her food truck, which serves healthy, socially conscious breakfast foods, in front of Arthur’s old-school donut shop. Though Arthur assumes she’s an entitled millennial, she’s actually a hard-working, enterprising, self-made woman who has poured every penny into her food truck business, which she plans to turn into an empire.

CBS’ new comedy “Superior Donuts” is part of a new wave of multi-camera sitcoms with something to say.
Comedian Jermaine Fowler and executive producer Bob Daily are taking advantage of that mandate, infusing their new show with biting commentary on everything, including gentrification, police brutality, Muslims in America, and the Trump era.
“Superior Donuts” began life as a stage play in 2008, written by playwright and actor Tracy Letts. The story, about an Arthur, an aging donut shop owner, and his new assistant, a young African-American man worried about his neighborhood’s fast gentrification, eventually moved to Broadway. The New York Times compared the play to a 1970s comedy, so it only makes sense that CBS decided to adapt the show.

CBS’ newest sitcom “Superior Donuts” doesn’t shy away from dealing with current events and hot button issues, and if president-elect Donald Trump were to get mad about it enough to tweet about it, the producers would take it. “If we were to incite a tweet war with the President of the United States, we probably would not turn down the publicity,” executive producer Bob Daily joked during the show’s panel at the Television Critics’ Association’s press tour in Pasadena Monday. The show has plans to do episodes about gun control, the gentrification of a Chicago neighborhood and breaking Muslim sterotypes.
