Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonca Filho is no stranger to Cannes, having debuted two previous films in Competition beginning with Aquarius in 2016 starring Sonia Braga, so effective as a woman determined not to lose her condo to a demolition, and then grabbing the Jury Prize in 2019 for the surreal western Bacurau (again with Braga), in which a whole village seemingly is disappeared from satellite maps and must fight for its existence. Both of those movies deal thematically with people threatened with losing their way of life, being displaced.
Now his third film in Competition and biggest production yet, The Secret Agent, also might fit into that theme as it centers on a man coming back to a small city in order to get closer to his young son after losing his wife to pneumonia. What he discovers in the film set in...

Carnaval provides a convenient cover story for nearly 100 deaths and disappearances in “The Secret Agent,” Kleber Mendonça Filho’s robust sense-memory immersion into the sights, sounds and suffocating climate — both political and meteorological — the Brazilian director associates with 1977 Recife. It was a period of great “mischief,” per the super cinematic thriller’s opening titles, although that’s too light a word to describe the everyday corruption that permeates practically every aspect of this meaty 160-minute period piece. Mendonça remembers it well, demonstrating how even the worst of times can inspire a perverse sort of nostalgia.

Exclusive: Hector Babenco’s final film, My Hindu Friend was originally released in Brazil (where it is known as Meu Amigo Hindu) in 2015 and made its international premiere at the Montréal World Film Festival the following year where the film’s star Willem Dafoe was honored with a Best Actor award. After Babenco died in 2016, the film never made it stateside. Fast-forward to 2020 and Rock Salt Releasing acquired has title and set a limited weeklong run for the film starting January 17.
Oscar-nominated Babenco co-wrote the film with Guilherme Moraes Guintella. The film was inspired by Babenco’s life story with Dafoe playing Diego, a talented American filmmaker, whose life is quickly disrupted after being diagnosed with lymphatic cancer. Close to death, Diego marries the beautiful Livia (Maria Fernanda Cândido) before heading to Seattle for life-saving treatments, including receiving a bone marrow transplant.

After a somewhat muted reception at Cannes earlier this year, Sony Pictures Classics has just released the first trailer for Italian director Marco Bellocchio’s mafia film The Traitor. In addition to Cannes, the film is currently making its way through the festival circuit, with screenings at both Toronto and New York film festivals.
Starring Pierfrancesco Favino as Tommaso Buscetta, a real-life figure, and the first Mafia boss to become an informant on the Nostra Costa in the early 80s, Bellocchio’s film appears to the type of time-spanning gangster film that is rarely seen these days. In addition to Favino, Luigi Lo Cascio, Fausto Russo Alesi, and Maria Fernanda Cândido co-star.
Bellocchio has been a staple of Italian filmmaking since the mid-60s with his first film Fists in the Pocket. His previous film was 2016’s Sweet Dreams staring Bérénice Bejo, which also received lukewarm reviews.

"You can't take money to the grave." Sony Pictures Classics has debuted a new official Us trailer for the Italian mafia drama The Traitor, originally titled Il Traditore, which first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this year. It's stopping by the Toronto Film Festival next, then will be hitting Us theaters sometime in early 2020. The film tells the real story of Tommaso Buscetta, the so called "boss of the two worlds", who became the first mafia informant in Sicily in the 1980s. The film received mostly negative reviews out of Cannes, with critics saying that, "there's just no real perspective on Buscetta, which separates this brisk but uninvolving history lesson from the truly great mob movies." The film stars Pierfrancesco Favino, Luigi Lo Cascio, Fausto Russo Alesi, Maria Fernanda Cândido, Fabrizio Ferracane, Nicola Calì, and Giovanni Calcagno. This looks like an epic retelling of this big mafia trial, but perhaps a bit too indulgent.

Exclusive: U.S. label Rock Salt Releasing is re-launching acclaimed Argentine-Brazilian filmmaker Hector Babenco’s (Kiss Of The Spider Woman) final film My Last Friend in the international and U.S markets.
Willem Dafoe stars in the 2015 feature about a film director who learns he is on the brink of death. Rock Salt Releasing will launch international sales on the film, also known as My Hindu Friend, in Cannes.
Originally released in Brazil, the English-language movie internationally premiered at the Montréal World Film Festival in 2016 where Dafoe was awarded Best Actor. The film’s release was put on hold, however, due to Babenco’s untimely death in July 2016.
