If the 1977-set political thriller takes home Cannes’ big prize, it will give Neon a sixth consecutive Palme d’Or win following last year’s Anora, Justine Triet’s 2023 winner Anatomy of a Fall, 2022’s Triangle of Sadness, 2021’s Titane and 2019’s Parasite. Out of that bunch, Anora and Parasite won Best Picture Oscars.

‘The Secret Agent’ Review: Wagner Moura Effectively Plays Man Of Mystery In Brazilian Thriller – Cannes Film Festival
Image
Brazilian filmmaker Kleber Mendonca Filho is no stranger to Cannes, having debuted two previous films in Competition beginning with Aquarius in 2016 starring Sonia Braga, so effective as a woman determined not to lose her condo to a demolition, and then grabbing the Jury Prize in 2019 for the surreal western Bacurau (again with Braga), in which a whole village seemingly is disappeared from satellite maps and must fight for its existence. Both of those movies deal thematically with people threatened with losing their way of life, being displaced.

Now his third film in Competition and biggest production yet, The Secret Agent, also might fit into that theme as it centers on a man coming back to a small city in order to get closer to his young son after losing his wife to pneumonia. What he discovers in the film set in...

‘The Secret Agent’ Review: Wagner Moura Is Marked for Death in Kleber Mendonça Filho’s Terrific ’70s Thriller
Image
Carnaval provides a convenient cover story for nearly 100 deaths and disappearances in “The Secret Agent,” Kleber Mendonça Filho’s robust sense-memory immersion into the sights, sounds and suffocating climate — both political and meteorological — the Brazilian director associates with 1977 Recife. It was a period of great “mischief,” per the super cinematic thriller’s opening titles, although that’s too light a word to describe the everyday corruption that permeates practically every aspect of this meaty 160-minute period piece. Mendonça remembers it well, demonstrating how even the worst of times can inspire a perverse sort of nostalgia.

The 56-year-old director was just 8 years old at the time the the film takes place — roughly the same age as Fernando, the son of his main character, a man of multiple identities played by “Narcos” star Wagner Moura — and it seems safe to assume that the boy’s all-consuming desire to see “Tubarão” (the Portuguese...

Kleber Mendonça Filho Sets Next Film The Secret Agent Starring Wagner Moura
Image
Following up his documentary Pictures of Ghosts, Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho has unveiled his first narrative feature since 2019’s Bacurau. He’ll next direct the political thriller The Secret Agent, set to star Brazilian icon Wagner Moura.

Variety reports the late 1970s-set film will follow Moura as Marcelo, “a university professor in his 40s who is on the run. He travels from São Paulo to the seaside city of Recife during Carnival week, hoping to reunite with his son. But he soon finds out he has been tailed and spied on by neighbors in his new refuge, leaving him no possible escape from the tentacles of corruption.” Maria Fernanda Candido (The Traitor) is also among the ensemble of the film, which is aiming for a 2025 premiere and will mark the director’s most ambitious work yet.

The director actually revealed the project last year, saying, “The plot takes place...

Image
Brazilian auteur Kleber Mendonça Filho (“Bacurau”) is set to direct “The Secret Agent,” a gripping political thriller headlined by “Civil War” star Wagner Moura. The film is set in the late 1970s during the final years of Brazil’s military dictatorship.

MK2 Films, the sales banner behind the Oscar-winning “Anatomy of a Fall,” will introduce the project to buyers at the Cannes Film Market. Now in pre-production, “The Secret Agent” is being produced by Brazil’s Cinemascopio and Mk Productions, whose credits include Oscar-nominated films such as Joachim Trier’s “The Worst Person in the World” and Pawel Pawlikowski’s “Cold War.”

Moura, who broke through internationally with his Golden Globe-nominated performance as Pablo Escobar in the Netflix series “Narcos,” will star as Marcelo, a university professor in his 40s who is on the run. It’s time to expose the Mafia in new trailer for ‘The Traitor’
Maria Fernanda Cândido and Pierfrancesco Favino in Le Traître (2019)
After playing in competition in Cannes in 2019 and recently winning six Italian Donatello Academy Awards, including Best Film, Director, Screenplay, Actor, Supporting Actor and Editing a new trailer has landed for ‘The Traitor’.

Based on the true story of the Cosa Nostra in the early 1980s, the film begins as an all-out war rages between Sicilian mafia bosses over the heroin trade. Tommaso Buscetta (Favino), a made man, flees to hide out in Brazil. Back home, scores are being settled and Buscetta watches from afar as his sons and brother are killed in Palermo, knowing he may be next. Arrested and extradited to Italy by the Brazilian police, Buscetta makes a decision that will change everything for the Mafia: he decides to meet with Judge Giovanni Falcone and betray the eternal vow he made to the Cosa Nostra.

Directed by veteran Italian helmer Marco Bellocchio, the film stars Pierfrancesco Favino (World War Z,...

U.S. Trailer for Marco Bellocchio’s Mafia Drama ‘The Traitor’
After a somewhat muted reception at Cannes earlier this year, Sony Pictures Classics has just released the first trailer for Italian director Marco Bellocchio’s mafia film The Traitor. In addition to Cannes, the film is currently making its way through the festival circuit, with screenings at both Toronto and New York film festivals.

Starring Pierfrancesco Favino as Tommaso Buscetta, a real-life figure, and the first Mafia boss to become an informant on the Nostra Costa in the early 80s, Bellocchio’s film appears to the type of time-spanning gangster film that is rarely seen these days. In addition to Favino, Luigi Lo Cascio, Fausto Russo Alesi, and Maria Fernanda Cândido co-star.

Bellocchio has been a staple of Italian filmmaking since the mid-60s with his first film Fists in the Pocket. His previous film was 2016’s Sweet Dreams staring Bérénice Bejo, which also received lukewarm reviews.

Check out the trailer below.

New Us Trailer for Marco Bellocchio's Italian Mafia Drama 'The Traitor'
"You can't take money to the grave." Sony Pictures Classics has debuted a new official Us trailer for the Italian mafia drama The Traitor, originally titled Il Traditore, which first premiered at the Cannes Film Festival this year. It's stopping by the Toronto Film Festival next, then will be hitting Us theaters sometime in early 2020. The film tells the real story of Tommaso Buscetta, the so called "boss of the two worlds", who became the first mafia informant in Sicily in the 1980s. The film received mostly negative reviews out of Cannes, with critics saying that, "there's just no real perspective on Buscetta, which separates this brisk but uninvolving history lesson from the truly great mob movies." The film stars Pierfrancesco Favino, Luigi Lo Cascio, Fausto Russo Alesi, Maria Fernanda Cândido, Fabrizio Ferracane, Nicola Calì, and Giovanni Calcagno. This looks like an epic retelling of this big mafia trial, but perhaps a bit too indulgent.

Rock Salt’s parent company TriCoast Worldwide picked up the O2 Production feature on the advice of The Movie Agency.

Co-written by Guilherme Moraes Guintella (Principal Dancer), the project was inspired by Babenco’s own life story, starring his friends and family as characters.
