Remember how we mentioned that last week was a bit of a “calm before the storm” situation, as we get closer to the Halloween season and its nonstop onslaught of fresh horror movies?

That orange wave has arrived, and it won’t be slowing down until October 31. In fact, there are so many new releases this week that we’re going to break them up into separate days.

Cinephobia Releasing brings Dane Elcar‘s acclaimed sci-fi thriller Brightwood home today, a time loop horror movie that’s now available on all your favorite VOD outlets.

The indie horror movie centers on a married couple at the end of their rope, and that’s before they get trapped into a loop with a hooded killer in the woods.

Death is only the beginning in The Entity. In the film, a family must contend with demonic forces after a tragic death, and an exclusive clip provided to Bloody Disgusting sets up a terrifying scare that highlights the horror ahead.

In the upcoming Filipino horror film, “A family is haunted by what appears to be the ghost of their youngest daughter. Now they must try to figure out why she is trying to communicate with them and if it’s really her.”

The Entity releases on VOD and Digital on August 22, 2023.

The exclusive clip below sets up a jump scare, with foreboding signs pointing toward something else reaching out from beyond the grave.

Shooting set to begin in May ahead of a festival premiere later in 2022.

Science-fiction thriller Monolith is set to become the first feature to emerge from a new initiative aimed at boosting South Australia’s filmmaking capacity and diversity.

The production has received a greenlight after nearly a year of development through the Film Lab: New Voices programme – an intensive low-budget skills scheme designed to support the next generation of filmmaking talent in the Australian state.

A budget of $288,000 will be provided by state agency the South Australian Film Corporation (Safc) and the Adelaide Film Festival, where the film is intended to premiere in October.

Production is set to begin in late 2022.

Netflix has taken rights on revenge thriller Thar, which stars Anil Kapoor and Harsh Varrdhan Kapoor in the story of a man who embarks on a journey to avenge his past. The project marks the directorial debut of Raj Singh Choudhary, who also wrote the screenplay. Fatima Sana Shaikh and Satish Kaushik complete the principal cast. Acclaimed Philippines actor Sharon Cuneta (“Caregiver”) will star in and executive produce the feature film adaptation of Marivi Soliven’s award-winning novel “The Mango Bride.”

The novel chronicles the lives of two Filipino women — Amparo, a quiet socialite born into a wealthy family, and Beverly, a wide-eyed mail-order bride — who migrate to California and discover hidden truths as their stories meet and intertwine. It was published in 2013 in English by Penguin Random House, in Filipino by National Book Store and in Spanish by Grupo Planeta. The novel won the highest literary prize in the Philippines – the Grand Prize of the Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards.

Filipino-Canadian filmmaker Martin Edralin, who tackled a migration theme in the Canadian Screen Awards nominated and SXSW-winning feature “Islands,” will direct. Rae Red (“The Woman and the Gun”) is adapting the novel as a screenplay.

Justin Deimen and Micah Tadena will produce for Singapore and London headquartered 108 Media.

Project is due to shoot in the spring and will star Sharon Cuneta.

New York-based Filipina filmmaker Isabel Sandoval has revealed details of her next feature, Park Lane.

She will again be working with Tony award-winning Broadway producer Jhett Tolentino on the project, which is due to shoot in the spring.

It stars actress, singer and chat show host Sharon Cuneta (“she’s considered the Julia Roberts of the Philippines”). The cast also includes Filipino stars Jodi Santamaria and Tony Labrusca.

The director intends to attach Us talent and to make the film as a Filipino/Us coproduction.

A soap opera-style melodrama tinged with elements of dark comedy, "Crying Ladies" is playing in a number of U.S. cities, including New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego and Honolulu.

The trio in question are Stella (played by Philippine superstar actress-singer Sharon Cuneta), a divorcee and petty thief just out of prison who is desperate to earn enough money to regain custody of her young son; Aling (Hilda Koronel), a former B-movie actress desperately reliving her better career days as the star of epics like "Darna and the Giants"; and young Cholent (Angel Aquino), whose strong religious convictions don't prevent her from engaging in an affair with her best friend's husband.

In order to make money, the women take advantage of Filipino-Chinese tradition, in which women are hired as professional weepers at funerals, to convince the observing gods that the deceased were truly good and worthy of entry into heaven.

That sociological element is the most interesting aspect of the film, which won six awards, including best picture, at the recent Metro Manila Film Festival. Otherwise, it depicts the complicated personal travails of its leading characters in overlong and pedestrian fashion. "Crying Ladies" is best appreciated for the winning performances of its trio of stars, who convey their characters' desperation with humor and poignancy.
