Price takes the “Don’t Wake Me Up” cue cards on a journey to a bowling alley parking lot, a lush field, a dive bar,...

In the last 10 years alone, he’s released 16 different studio albums that, among other conceits, ruminated on mortality and lost relationships, paid homage to the songs of Frank Sinatra and George Gershwin, and reinvented his own material as bluegrass rave-ups.

Willie Nelson Reveals 75th Album Release Date
Image
At 90 years young, there appears to be nothing that will slow Willie Nelson down. “The Red-Headed Stranger” is still doing everything he was doing when he started his career in country music. That includes recording and releasing new music. In fact, Willie Nelson just revealed the release date of his next album. This will be the “Always On My Mind” singer’s 75th album.

The New Willie Nelson Album

Willie Nelson has announced his upcoming album will be titled The Border. This album will not include as many songs as several of his past albums have. The latest album will only have 10 songs.

Of those 10 songs, four of them were co-written by the “Do Right Woman, Do Right Man” singer and Buddy Cannon. Nelson and Buddy Cannon have written songs together for quite some time.

Willie Nelson Announces New Album ‘The Border,’ Shares Rodney Crowell Cover
Image
Willie Nelson is showing no signs of slowing down as a month after he celebrates his 91st birthday, the country legend will release his 75th studio album, The Border.

Ahead of the LP’s May 31 release, Nelson has shared the first single and title track, a cover of Rodney Crowell’s 2019 song about a guard on the Texas border.

“We were writing the song to be sympathetic to the actual border guards, and I’m still sympathetic to them. They’re trying to do a job down there. It’s not their policy,...

Why the Best Americana Grammy is So Hard to Predict
Image
Leading up to the Grammy nominations on Nov. 10, Rolling Stone is breaking down 16 different categories. For each, we’re predicting the nominees, as well as who will (and who should) win on Grammy night.

Americana is a wide-open category, partly because it’s hard to define. “I always look at half of the folk category and think they are more Americana than half of the Americana nominees,” says Nelson Gullett, an Americana radio veteran and music director at Wdvx in Knoxville. And as the nomination of Jackson Browne’s Downhill...

Lyle Lovett, Country Music’s Most Mysterious Man, Can’t Stop Rambling
Image
Standing behind a camera atop a tripod onstage at the Smoky Mountain Center for the Performing Arts in Franklin, North Carolina, Lyle Lovett peers into the viewfinder and pauses for a moment before hitting the shutter button.

Lovett’s road manager yells loudly, “Fire in the hole,” as the room goes silent, the only subsequent sound being the click of the camera. The entire scene repeats itself a handful of times before Lovett is satisfied with how the empty venue, soon-to-be-packed with concertgoers, is portrayed.

“In terms of every type...

Rodney Crowell The Chicago Sessions Review: A World-Weary but Breezy Collaboration
Rodney Crowell
On paper, Rodney Crowell and Jeff Tweedy seem like an almost too-perfect pairing. Crowell once positioned himself as an alternative to the Nashville machine but, over the last 50 years, has become one of the town’s most accomplished and revered songwriters, while Tweedy is the consummate music nerd with a predilection for outsiders and a longstanding reverence for the classic country-rock of the 1960s and ’70s. Both share instincts for emotionally earnest lyrics and expanding the sonic terrain of traditional folk and blues.

On The Chicago Sessions, named after the Wilco Loft in the Windy City where the album was produced by Tweedy, Crowell’s delight and comfort in working with a kindred spirit is readily apparent. His recent efforts, including 2017’s Close Ties and 2021’s Triage, trend darker than his earlier work, showcasing the deepening crags of his weathered voice on songs about mortality and societal ills. Conversely, right...

Lucinda Williams Bit Ryan Adams and Other Big Reveals in Her New Memoir
Image
“Music was my therapy for the many traumas I suffered as a child,” Lucinda Williams writes in her new memoir, Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You. Those traumas include her mother’s mental illness, which created a volatile and often unpredictable environment for Williams and her two siblings, the eventual divorce of her parents, and her own battles with obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, and self-esteem issues. Peppered with flirtatious encounters, doomed relationships with “poets on motorcycles” (including Ryan Adams), and a same-sex kiss on a dance floor, the...

Rodney Crowell Is Still Trying to Unlock the Mystery of a Great Song
Image
Even with his most successful work, Rodney Crowell knows there’s always room for revision. In 2018, the celebrated singer-songwriter took another crack at the lyrics to “Shame on the Moon,” a 1982 cut recorded by Bob Seger, long after he’d excised it from his own setlists. These ongoing efforts and others are chronicled in Word for Word, a new coffee-table book featuring Crowell’s song lyrics, enhanced by images of the in-progress compositions from the author’s personal notebooks and a lifetime’s worth of photos.

At 72, Crowell is a...

Miranda Lambert Sparkles With Billy Joe Shaver’s ‘I’m Just an Old Chunk of Coal’
Image
Miranda Lambert interprets Billy Joe Shaver’s “I’m Just an Old Chunk of Coal (But I’m Gonna Be a Diamond Someday)” as a barroom jam with tinkling piano, a swinging rhythm, and drawling vocals. The track is the latest release from the upcoming Live Forever: A Tribute to Billy Joe Shaver, due Nov. 11.

Shaver, a real-deal outlaw who allegedly once asked a man, “Where do you want it?” before shooting him in the face, died in October 2020 at 81. Along with the mouthful title that is “I’m Just...

Joshua Hedley Is Resurrecting Nineties Country. But He Really Just Wants to Soundtrack Your Party Boat
Image
When it came time for Joshua Hedley to begin work on his second album, the polished Nineties country homage Neon Blue, the neo-traditionalist had only one guiding principle: make a record to be played on a pontoon boat.

“After these last couple years we’ve had, I felt like I didn’t want to hang my sad-sack, typical brand on people,” Hedley says. ‘I wanted to make a record that people could party to.”

Part of this was an artist’s desire to avoid self-repetition. Hedley’s 2018 debut, Mr. Jukebox,...

Willie Nelson Records Songs by Chris Stapleton, the Beatles for New Album ‘A Beautiful Time’
Image
Unstoppable album releaser Willie Nelson will drop yet another new LP with the release of A Beautiful Time. The record arrives April 29 — Nelson’s 89th birthday.

Willie previews the record with the first track “I’ll Love You Till the Day I Die,” a song written by Chris Stapleton and Rodney Crowell. It’s a dusty, harmonica-accented song about never-ending affection born from a brief encounter, and Willie sells it as if he’s lived it himself. The Red Headed Stranger debuted the song with an accompanying lyric video featuring...

Flashback: Emmylou Harris Gives Townes Van Zandt a Boost With ‘Pancho & Lefty’
Image
By the time Emmylou Harris released Luxury Liner, the third and most successful LP of her career-defining “honky-tonk angel” period, on Dec. 28, 1976, the vocalist had cemented a reputation for combining vintage country with impeccably chosen covers from outside the genre.

Harris had been famously mentored by the late Gram Parsons, but by now she was outside the country-rock pioneer’s shadow, standing on her own as a country hit-maker and rule-bender. While both of her previous major-label successes — Pieces of the Sky and Elite Hotel — contained unquestionable gems, it was...
