Sooty: the BBC objected to a female character for fear of ‘sexing up’
Simon Brew Sep 30, 2016

In 1965, the BBC resisted the introduction of Soo to The Sooty Show, for fear of making it too sexual...

The antics of Sooty, Sweep and Soo have brought entertainment to many over the past few decades. Originally a show with just Sooty and Sweep, show creator Harry Corbett had the idea of introducing another character, Soo, to the show. Soo was to be the talking character, and he mooted the idea to the show’s producer, Trevor Hill, back in 1965.

The answer? A swift no from the high ups of the BBC, “on the grounds that sex would be creeping into the programme”.

Corbett would go to his local pub afterwards and bemoan the decision. A reporter overheard him, asked if he could run the story, and Corbett agreed. It was, after all, factual.

These revelations have all come about in a new documentary, Sooty Ungloved, that...

Sooty, Sweep and Soo movie in the works
Sooty (2001)
Children's TV favourites Sooty and Sweep are lined up to star in their own film.

The puppet duo are to feature alongside their friend Soo in the new adventure, currently being penned by puppeteer and rights owner Richard Cadell.

The Radio Times reports that the as-yet-untitled movie has the blessing of Matthew Corbett (son of Sooty's creator Harry Corbett), and will see the bear and dog attempting to rescue their panda pal from a ruthless and controlling entertainment manager.

"She has been kidnapped by an evil showbiz impresario who will pull every trick in the book to turn her into a global superstar," explained Cadell.

"The film will be peppered with spectacular locations, countless celebrity cameos and buckets of slapstick, without detracting from the charm of the nation's favourite teddy bear, Sooty and his dim-witted best friend Sweep."

The Sooty Show was previously decommissioned by ITV in 2005, but after...

Sooty, Kermit, Edd the Duck: 31 TV puppets we still love
This weekend sees the debut of a brand new Saturday night entertainment show with a twist - it has puppets!

To mark the launch of BBC One's That Puppet Game Show on Saturday night (August 10), Digital Spy compiles a list of just some of TV's greatest ever puppets.

Andy Pandy

One of the leading children's characters of the early 1950s, Andy Pandy's 26 episodes were shown continuously until 1970, when a new series was made. The sweet marionette and his friends Teddy and Looby Loo lived in a picnic basket, and chilled out to the dulcet tones of Maria Bird. A new stop-motion series returned in 2002.

Animal

One of the best-loved Muppets, Animal is a drummer for the band Dr Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. He's surely up there with Dave Grohl, John Bonham and Ringo Starr as also one of the best-loved drummers of all time. Despite having a limited vocabulary,...

Clint Eastwood lambasted President Obamachair and Chuck Norris warned of 1,000 years of socialism
David Cameron can only dream of such support

With just days to go before London 2012 is banished to memory and the Olympic Park can prepare for its future as the derelict backdrop to a million gritty Channel 4 dramas about gang violence, it is time to face facts. Yes, it was fun being proud to be British. Yes, by the end of the Paralympics even the most hardened of us had managed to stop instinctively flinching at the sight of a union flag. But enough's enough. It is probably time to start agreeing again that Americans are better than us.

No, really, they are. Americans are better than us because they know how to commit. Look at how their celebrities endorse rightwing politicians. Would a British celebrity ever champion a Tory by publicly muttering incoherent abuse at an empty chair for 12 solid minutes? Would a British celebrity turn up on...

The Sooty Show (1968)
Ten Things About... Sooty
The Sooty Show (1968)
After a few years out of the limelight, Sooty grabbed the headlines again this week following his now-infamous assault on fellow magician Paul Daniels with a slice of cold pizza. Daniels was quick to play down the incident, no doubt out of professional courtesy. Of course, those of us who have tracked Sooty's mischievous ways down the years wouldn't have been in the least bit surprised when they heard the news. We mark Sooty's return to public life with ten fast facts. 1. Sooty was discovered on July 19, 1948 when Harry Corbett bought the famous puppet for 7s6d as a present for his son Matthew while on holiday in Blackpool. Known originally as 'Teddy', Harry quickly incorporated the new arrival into his magic show. 2. The bear was first seen on our screens in 1952 with an appearance on the BBC's Talent Night, filmed (more)...
