Stephen King's Tommyknockers Deserves More Credit (But Just a Little)
Image
In the 1990s, one name dominated TV miniseries: Stephen King. At the time, King had become the wealthiest writer in history, author of such popular novels as Misery, Carrie, It, The Stand and dozens more. While some of his titles -- Carrie, The Shining -- found homes on the big screen, many more became celebrated TV miniseries, attracting millions of viewers. In 1993, King and ABC partnered to add one more to the miniseries roster: The Tommyknockers.

Based on King’s 1987 novel of the same name -- one of King’s least-favorite of his own works -- The Tommyknockers attracted a wide audience, but earned mixed to negative reviews. Today, it has a reputation as one of the weakest of all King’s adaptations. Viewed more than 30 years later, however, The Tommyknockers stands out as an unusual King story. Despite the content restrictions of 1990s television the financial constraints the show's production,...

Most Famous Forbidden Movie Romances
Image
Movie romances never run out of obstacles to throw in the way of the main couple, but the most iconic hurdle of all is the forbidden love story. This trope has been executed countless times throughout cinema history. There's something particularly heart-wrenching and exciting about two people who long to be together but can't, due to circumstances out of their control.

Stories such as Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet have existed for centuries, but the forbidden romance plot line is still relevant today in other variations. From blockbuster hits like Titanic to animated treasures like Beauty and the Beast, these romantic pairings fight to overcome barriers such as class, society, and rivalries to be together. While forbidden romances likely won't go away anytime soon, these couples always stand out as the most iconic.

Updated by Arthur Goyaz on January 2, 2025: The forbidden love trope is very recurring in the romance genre,...

10 Terrifying Non-Horror Movies That Are Based On A True Story
Image
Contains discussion of death, torture, and sexual assault.

By its very nature, horror is designed to disturb, provoke, and scare its audience. As such, it comes as little surprise that horror has traditionally been the genre associated with the scariest movies of all time. However, cinema has played host to a number of offerings from outside the genre that are just as terrifying as the scariest horror film, if not more so. While film fans may primarily look to the best horror movies of all time for their cinematic scares, a film's ability to terrify its audience is by no means limited to one genre.

This status quo is only compounded when the movie draws inspiration from an unbelievable true story. The fact that the horrific events being depicted by the movie in question are based in reality lends an eerie air of authenticity to proceedings, one that emphasizes the...

Every Clint Eastwood Movie Death, Ranked
Image
At 94 years of age with his 40th and final directorial feature, Juror No. 2, set to be released in November, Clint Eastwood has had quite a memorable career that has created an unbelievable legacy. As an actor, especially in his early years, he's been known for playing the kind of characters who are always one step ahead of the game. Because of this, having acted in over 50 films, it's been a surprising rarity that audiences have ever seen one of his characters die, onscreen or otherwise. With the work he's done as a director, he has also gone out of his way to cast himself in roles with more of a vulnerability to them, the kind of characters that are far from the all-invincible tough guy persona that he's usually known for playing so well. Because of this, he's also shown that he's certainly not afraid to play the kind of...

Clint Eastwood Shocked Meryl Streep in The Bridges of Madison County
Image
Quick Links What Is The Bridges of Madison County About, and Who Does It Star? Streep Is Amazed by Eastwood's Keen Directorial Eye Two Hollywood Legends Make Movie Magic

Any time two of Hollywood's most revered and adored actors partner up for a picture, there's a very good chance that movie magic will be made, which was exactly the case when cinema greats Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep starred in the 1995 romantic drama The Bridges of Madison County. The poignant and engrossing film chronicles the four-day love affair between a frustrated housewife and a traveling photographer. Like many of his silver screen projects, Eastwood masterfully both directed and appeared in the project.

Both a critical and commercial triumph, the drama earned appreciation from critics and audiences alike, with fans of the seasoned movie stars raving about the duo's magnetic on-screen chemistry. Streep herself was blown away by Eastwood's extraordinary...

Faster Trailer Is Here!
Yahoo! Movies has debuted the full-length trailer for the upcoming action flick, Faster, starring Dwayne Johnson, Maggie Grace, Moon Bloodgood and Billy Bob Thornton. Take a look!

Faster Trailer 2

A stint in prison usually has one of two effects on a man - it either breaks him down or makes him stronger. For Driver (Dwayne Johnson), a 10-year sentence proved the latter. His strength was not just fueled by time, but also by a hunger to avenge the murder of his brother during the botched bank robbery that led to his own imprisonment. Untouchable on the 'inside,' he made plenty of enemies in prison - men who were counting the days until his release so they could exact their own revenge on the outside. Now, on the day of his release, he is hell-bent on reaping vengeance upon the four men responsible for his brother's murder. With a list...

Jeff Bridges at an event for La 82e cérémonie des Oscars (2010)
His Dudeness Jeff Bridges totally rocked the role of Bad Blake, the invariably high and highly talented country singer-songwriter anti-hero of Crazy Heart. Not to mention that Bridges totally rolled through the Academy Awards as well by snagging the Best Actor Oscar. His performance alone is worth the price of the DVD or Blu-Ray disc (to be released Tuesday, April 20). But there's so much more, including deleted scenes like the one above, in which Bad lives down to his name with a sloshed barfly (Annie Corley). Hey, he's got a beverage over here!

Josh Hartnett
Film review: 'Here on Earth'
Josh Hartnett
A blue-blooded snob wins the local girl, sort of, in "Here on Earth", a mostly dismissive teen romance from first-time director Mark Piznarski ("The '60s"). Headed for an overall unimpressive showing in theaters despite a hot young cast, the Fox 2000 presentation is made up of entirely recycled characters and situations from the dawn of cinema (if not cave painting).

While lead actors Chris Klein ("American Pie"), Leelee Sobieski ("Eyes Wide Shut") and Josh Hartnett ("The Virgin Suicides") easily keep pace with the dramatic demands of an expedient screenplay credited to Michael Seitzman, Piznarski's direction tends to flatten everything to a deadly degree. The result is a totally predictable movie with fits of charm, at best, that takes an unbelievable third-act U-turn and becomes a three-hankie weeper.

"Here on Earth" has a lot of ground to cover, so it takes just a few minutes for the three principal players to be introduced and the plot set in motion. Kelley (Klein) is on the verge of escape from an Ivy League prep school when he and some pals take his graduation present, a Mercedes, for a spin. On a whim, these hated foreigners go for lower-caste grub in the diner where Samantha (Sobieski) works.

She's the girlfriend of down-home Jasper (Josh Hartnett), who takes umbrage at Kelley being, well, here on Earth. The two guys have a little car race that results in the gas station attached to the restaurant exploding and burning down the entire establishment. Lawyers descend, punishments ensue.

Kelley's megasuccessful father (Stuart Wilson) agrees to have his princely son spend a summer in the gulag, so to speak.

"Richie Rich" Kelley has to live and work with "Farm Boy" Jasper while they help rebuild the diner, under the supervision of the latter's father (Michael Rooker). Sullen and jerky, Kelley gets the attention of Samantha with not much effort. They stroll through the Berkshires and swap stories about Big Losses. He's motherless. She, a promising hurdler, wiped out a knee, but how badly only she and the doctor know.

On and on it goes, and where does it end? Josh tries to stop her from falling in love with Kelley, but Samantha eventually decides the good life is what she's after. When Kelley takes her to Boston and the family castle, it's a swift slide back down to reality. His dad nixes anything serious between the two. A return to the sticks promises some kind of tearful resolution -- and then some, as it turns out.

On the sidelines playing responsible adults are Bruce Greenwood and Annette O'Toole as Samantha's parents and Annie Corley as Josh's mom. Sobieski and Klein are not given much to work with, and their tentative performances probably stem from the writing, but Piznarski's lethargic direction is also a big problem. Andrea Morricone, son of Ennio Morricone and composer of the fine "Liberty Heights" score, contributes an unsavory smorgasbord of musical styles, while the soundtrack is headlined by Jessica Simpson's No. 1 single "Where You Are".

Film review: 'Free Willy 3'
With the first two installments in the "Free Willy" saga snagging almost $108 million in North America alone, Warner Bros. is understandably taking another dip in the ocean with "Free Willy 3: The Rescue".

Handsomely crafted and smartly scripted with solid performances, the latest adventure about a boy and his whale is certainly see-worthy, although it could have used an occasional kick-start in the pacing department.

Given this summer's performance record of family-oriented features, the third "Willy" is unlikely to emerge as much of a catch at the boxoffice, but should make a bigger splash on home video. Greenpeace, meanwhile, should seriously consider adopting it as its official recruitment film.

Back again as Willy's best buddy Jesse is Jason James Richter, who has landed a nifty summer job tracking whales with his trusty mentor, Randolph (August Schellenberg). Both have been brought aboard by Drew (Annie Corley), a research scientist who's investigating a decline in the local orca population off the Pacific Northwest coast.

Their search leads them to a purported salmon-fishing boat actually belonging to an illegal whaling operation headed up by John Wesley (Patrick Kilpatrick), who has invited his 10-year-old son, Max Vincent Berry), on the expedition as sort of a rite of passage. When Max discovers his dad has more than sockeye on his mind -- namely a $200-a-pound trade in harvested whale meat -- he receives a jolt of consciousness-raising that puts a serious strain on their father-son relationship.

Richter, filled out from his last "Free Willy" outing and looking like a baby Ray Liotta, once again delivers a committed performance with a conviction that nicely plays off Schellenberg's easy amiability.

But Berry is the big find this time around as the tousle-haired, conflicted Max. A young man with an old soul, he conveys his character's dilemma with a wide-eyed honesty and sensitivity that bodes well for his big-screen future.

The director, New Zealand's Sam Pillsbury ("The Quiet Earth"), has a nice affinity for the naturalistic, British Columbia setting, while John Mattson's tidy, poetic script (incorporating characters created by the late Keith Walker) is a considerable improvement over the 1994 misfire "Milk Money". Still, the fundamental problem remains that there's only about an hour's worth of plot here that has been stretched and padded with unnecessarily lingering underwater images that may look pretty but do the pacing no favors.

Speaking of visuals, Canada-based cinematographer Tobias Schliessler certainly makes good use of the moody Pacific coastline and its challenging mix of light, shadow and fog. As for those Keiko stand-ins, the usual combination of animatronic and digitally composed creatures along with wildlife footage again makes for passable but not exactly groundbreaking effects work.
