Remember Ecw? I do. Extreme Championship Wrestling was the underground wrestling phenomenon that had a cult following in the 90s and still does today. It was on the fringe. During an era of pro-wrestling that consisted of WWF booking Doink the Clown, Bastion Booger and a more cartoony product and WCW was beginning to sign former WWF talent and starting to resemble the WWF a few years earlier Ecw was the grunge-rock scene, it was punk, it was hardcore, it was edgy. Before WWF Attitude, before WCW turned Hogan heel and flew to the moon on the back of the New World Order of wrestling, brother, there was Ecw doing something that influenced pro-wrestling forever.

Now, I am a lifelong WWF fan and I loved the cartoon era because I was a kid back then, and I loved the Attitude Era, because I was a teenager, and so on, and so forth.

Welcome to this week’s 205 Live review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have… Jessica Alba! Wait, no we don’t. We do have more tournament action to crown the new contender for the Wrestlemania match against the champion, Buddy Murphy.

Match #1: Oney Lorcan def. Humberto Carrillo The following is courtesy of wwe.com:

When Humberto Carrillo made his WWE 205 Live debut, it was to answer an Open Challenge from WWE Cruiserweight Champion Buddy Murphy. Despite a losing effort, he immediately impressed the WWE Universe, and has since become a rising force in the Cruiserweight division. However, in search for the best Cruiserweights in the world, WWE 205 Live General Manager Drake Maverick invited Nxt Superstar Oney Lorcan to compete in the WWE Cruiserweight Title Tournament. As the match got underway, both Lorcan and Carrillo approached each other cautiously before an agile exchange that left neither with a clear advantage.

Pro Wrestling Sheet is reporting that since January, the WWE has been talking to the Sinclair Broadcasting Group, owners of Ring of Honor Wrestling, with the hopes of purchasing that promotion. Talks are said to be in the opening stages and, similar to the conversation the WWE had with Impact Wrestling before Anthem Sports purchased that company, may turn out with no change in ownership.

As a fan of both organizations, I'm conflicted by this news. There are some performers in Ring of Honor who would be amazing in either the WWE or the Nxt brand. Adam Cole for one would be a huge aquisition for the WWE. While rumor has it he's already WWE bound, having him come into the company and acknowledge the work he's created in Ring of Honor would do a lot to establish him for the casual WWE audience.

1.Adam Cole came out victorious, as predicted by me last week, at Death Before Dishonor. It’s a well deserved victory for an up and coming star. What that victory, it caps Ring of Honor’s first real attempt at an episodic story line. One legitimate issue I’ve had with Ring of Honor television is the fact that apart from some rudimentary nods to their Pay Per Views, the shows have been random matches that have no real meaning. Wrestling is story telling. If we wanted to see two guys, or ladies, fight, we’d watch Mma. While the story was spotty, the fact they found a way to keep us viewed to the screen every week is a step in the right direction if the company hopes to expand. The term ‘legend’ is thrown around all too freely these days, but Dusty Rhodes was a bona fide legend. A three time world champion. The most successful wrestling ever in Florida in the era of territorial wrestling. A successful booker and a great creative wrestling mind. The father to two modern day superstars. A mentor to past and present developmental wrestlers in Nxt. Dusty Rhodes was many things to many people. He crossed the generations, beloved by fans of all ages and his untimely passing has shocked the wrestling world, even making the mainstream news websites.

I was lucky enough to see Dusty Rhodes wrestle live just the once, in April 2000 at Ecw Cyberslam 2000 when he lost clean to Steve Corino. Seeing the man up close and personal in the tiny Ecw Arena was a huge learning experience for me. He made every single movement, every gesture, and everything he did mean something.

If Ring of Honor ever gets their own Hall of Fame, and if Tna’s is still around in a few years, you can imagine that Christopher Daniels would be one of the few men on the planet to be inducted into both.

Daniels has been with both wrestling organizations from their inception (he first appeared on Tna’s fourth weekly pay-per-view, and main-evented the first Roh show), and been one of their best workers. Throughout the years, his character has evolved from a dark, religious menace to a man that just loves to have an appletini or two. Recently, he’s also taken his love of comic books into a new realm after writing his own comic “Christopher Daniels and Kazarian Wrestle Aw Yeah Comics.”

For quite some time now, there have been rumors abound that once Kevin Steen wrapped up his run with Ring of Honor, he would be heading to WWE. Well, on Saturday, July 19th, that chapter of Steen’s career came to a close, as he competed in his final Roh contest.

In Dearborn, Mi, Ring of Honor’s Summer Heat Tour reached its conclusion with an event that featured Roh’s signature hard-hitting contests. However, it was the main event that most fans came to see, as Kevin Steen battled his longtime friend — and sometimes rival — Steve Corino.

Before the match began, fans showered Steen with streamers — a Ring of Honor tradition adopted from Japanese audiences. On the heels of WrestleMania 30, WWE will be taking it to the extreme at their sixth annual Extreme Rules pay-per-view on May 4 in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

Given the PG aspirations of WWE in recent years, however, the action won’t nearly be as “extreme” as when the term was coined in the more violent, hard-hitting 1990s.

WWE considers gratuitous chairshots and bloodletting too extreme for TV nowadays, but such excesses were a necessary evil when they first rose to notoriety, insists a man who personified the era.

“Extreme rules, hardcore wrestling — whatever they want to call it — was born out of a necessity to survive,” said the hardcore legend Terry Funk, who revolutionized the business. “In Ecw, hardcore wrestling wasn’t done just for the fun of it. It was done for a purpose, for a reason. And for me, it was done to exist and produce a revenue for my family.

In a drastic change of pace from fist pumping on the Jersey Shore, Tna Impact Wrestling star Robbie E. recently made an appearance at Pro-Wrestling Elite in Scotland. Prior to an intense contest for the heavyweight championship, Robbie E. sat down with WhatCulture’s Simon Cassidy to discuss his beginings in the world of pro-wrestling, his influences, aspirations and some misconceptions about his “movie career”.

A few years back, when I started writing for the web, I made contact with a very boisterous, good spirited horror host by the name of Rob Dimension. Rob gave me my first screener of his show Late Night at the Horror Hotel, and I embraced each episode with fan fervor. The humor was camp, and it was witty featuring all the kaiju my screen could handle. The set designs were true mad scientist. I could tell then that Mr. Dimension was an exceptionally talented guy. Since that time I’ve listened to and enjoyed both his Xoc (Extreme Odd Couple) Podcast, Monster Mania Podcast and even had the chance to hang out at Monster Mania and hob knob a bit. Rob pushes himself on every project to which he lends himself. That is no more evident than in his latest endeavor, a short film by the name of No Clowning Around.

We start with a recap of last week’s main event between Jay Lethal and El Generico, and Mike Bennett’s interference.

At the start of the show we are told that due to last week’s main event a new match has been added to Final Battle. I wonder what that could be.

Tonight’s main event will be a tag match between the Young Bucks and Future Shock (Kyle O‘Riley and Adam Cole).

We cut to Prince Nana putting over Tommasio Chiampa. Bacially a short promo about how strong he is and how he is the best, intercut with videos of his training routine. Fairly effective framing device.

Worth Watching?: Not really, it was just your standard squash match. Ciampa’s finisher is cool, though.

Before the opening titles we get a recap of last weeks Proving Ground between new comers Caprice Colman and Cedric Alexander against Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team, which admittedly is well worth watching again, and the post match promo from Dem Boys, the Briscos.

There are some subtle tweaks to the set up they have at the Davis Arena in Louisville, Kentucky which gives Roh a more professional look.

This week’s main event is the American Wolves (Davey Richards & Eddie Edwards) against the House Of Truth (Mike Elgin and Roderick Strong)

This weeks opening match has a tag team debuting. They are known as the Bravado brothers and they look like extras from The Brady Bunch.
