- Served as a lieutenant with the Seaforth Highlanders, a line infantry regiment of the British Army, in World War I and was wounded and taken prisoner by the Germans.
- He appeared in two Best Picture Academy Award winners: Rebecca (1940) and Le tour du monde en 80 jours (1956). He also appeared in three other Best Picture nominees: Les aventures de Robin des Bois (1938), Prisonniers du passé (1942) and Le Père de la mariée (1950).

- Made his stage debut in 1914 with Dennis King, who was actually the call boy, as two footmen in 'The Return of the Prodigal at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre.
