Five years after a torrential storm walloped Santa Barbara County that resulted in deadly mudslides, evacuations were ordered Jan. 9 for the enclave of Montecito and some neighboring areas as downpours once again sparked threatening conditions.

Trees toppled, highways were closed and flash floods — as seen in a startling video shared by Montecito resident Ellen DeGeneres and in images of a man kayaking in downtown Santa Barbara — hit the region, which is also home to such names as Oprah Winfrey, Rob Lowe and Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.

“Scenery, weather, lifestyle, there is nowhere like it and real estate prices have gone through the roof,” Lowe, the star of Dog Gone and 9-1-1: Lone Star, tells THR by email. “But,” he adds, “there’s no free lunch! When you live this close to mother nature, sometimes you’re going to feel it.”

Warner Bros. Television has optioned Diane Cook’s forthcoming novel “The New Wilderness” to be developed as a TV series by Matt Reeves’ production company 6th and Idaho.

Reeves, whose upcoming “The Batman” film starring Robert Pattinson is slated for 2021, is signed on as an executive producer along with 6th and Idaho’s Daniel Pipski and Adam Kassan. “Watchmen” and “Westworld” writer Carly Wray is also an executive producer. She and 6th and Idaho are both under overall deals with Wbtv.

The fictional novel, which was longlisted for the 2020 Booker Prize, will be published on Aug. 11 by Harper Books. Cook is also known for her story collection “Man V. Nature.” Cook will executive produce and write the pilot.

In a competitive situation, Warner Bros. Television has acquired the rights to Diane Cook’s upcoming novel The New Wilderness to develop as a television series. Matt Reeves’ 6th & Idaho will executive produce the project as part of its overall deal with Wbtv.

Cook is slated to write and executive produce the pilot for the series inspired by her book of the same name. The New Wilderness follows a mother who seeks to move her family from the city to land untouched by man after her daughter’s health suffers from the ongoing effect of climate change.

Reeves, Daniel Pipski and Adam Kassan will executive produce for 6th & Idaho. Carly Wray also will executive produce and supervise the first episode as part of her Wbtv deal. Rafi Crohn of 6th& Idaho will co-executive produce.
