Phil Collins | Documentary to premiere on YouTube next week
Phil Collins in Frère des ours (2003)
Drummer Phil Collins is the subject of Drummer First, a documentary premiering on YouTube next week.

Despite his status as one of the best selling music artists in the world, Phil Collins is, first and formost, a drummer. He says as much in new documentary Drummer First, which premieres on the Drumeo YouTube channel next week.

Musicians appearing in the documentary include Nic Collins, Chad Smith, Mike Portnoy, Leland Sklar, Tommy Aldridge, Eloy Casagrande, Billy Cobham, Matt Cameron, Daryl Stuermer, Luis Conte, Dom Famularo, Simon Phillips, Todd Sucherman, Jonathan Moffett, Jordan Rudess, Brann Dailor, Liberty DeVitto and Chad Wackerman.

Drumeo has carved out a bit of a niche among drummers and aspiring musicians, producing videos where drummers from famous bands react, play along to or compose their own original drum parts for various songs. David Lee Roth Drops New Song “Scotch and Sofa”: Stream
Image
David Lee Roth has released the new song “Scotch and Sofa.” The track is the latest in a series of one-off singles from the Van Halen singer, and it might be the most eccentric of the bunch.

Laced with prominent horns, Dlr dabbles in a bit of salsa/disco on the song. There’s also a bit of the lounge-y cabaret vibes Diamond Dave has always had an affinity for. An Easter Egg for Van Halen fans comes in the form of his chorus delivery of “scotch and sofa” — which shares the same cadence as “hot for teacher.”

Roth shared the song on his YouTube channel under the title “Scotch and Sofa 4” but offered little else regarding its origin. Like his other recent post-“retirement” singles, the track might have came from recording sessions nearly a decade ago at Henson Recording Studios in Hollywood, California.

The recording sessions featured John 5 on guitar and bass,...

Nils Lofgren Is in the E Street Band and Crazy Horse — and He Still Found Time to Make a New Solo LP
Image
In the early months of the pandemic, Nils Lofgren didn’t know what to do with himself. The guitarist had been on the road since the Sixties, when his band Grin took off, and in the years that followed he’d launched many solo tours between stints with Bruce Springsteen in the E Street Band, Ringo Starr in the All Starr Band, and Neil Young in the Santa Monica Flyers, the Trans Band, and Crazy Horse.

“Covid threw me for a loop,” he tells Rolling Stone via Zoom from a...

Oscar-Nominated ‘Encanto’ Composer Germaine Franco Has Already Made Film-Music History
Image
Composer Germaine Franco’s Oscar nomination for “Encanto” is a landmark moment in film music:

– She is the first Latina to be nominated in that category;

– She is only the sixth woman ever to be nominated for an original score;

– And she is the first woman to score a Disney film.

But ask any of her colleagues in the profession and they’ll tell you something else: that it’s a triumph for a musically talented, genuinely kind person who has worked hard her entire life, dating back decades to her childhood in El Paso, Texas, just across the border from where her grandparents were born in Chihuahua and Durango, Mexico.

Franco landed the “Encanto” assignment in part because she had firmly established the Mexican backdrop of Disney’s 2017 film “Coco” via her orchestrations and original songs. Says Lin-Manuel Miranda, who is also nominated as songwriter for “Encanto”: “I...

‘Miss Angela’, Feature Docu About 90-Year-Old Cuban-American Songwriter, Sets Andy Garcia To Narrate – Update
Andy Garcia
Updated with additional info: Andy Garcia has come aboard to narrate Miss Angela, the working title of the feature documentary Angela Alvarez, the 91-year-old who had her lifetime’s work of songs discovered, and recorded her first album. Filmmakers Paul Toogood and Lloyd Stanton interviewed Alvarez and her children about her life and recorded when she performed her music in a debut concert (on her 91st birthday) at Hollywood’s Avalon Theater, an event Garcia both played in the band and hosted.

The film is now in postproduction.

“As a fanatical student of Cuban music it’s easy to recognize when you see someone that’s special, not only musically, but lyrically,” he said. “Angela Alvarez is a real discovery. I’m

honored to be a part of it — to be asked to lend my support.”

Previous Exclusive, June 7 Pm: A featured documentary is on its way about Angela Alvarez,...

Concert Review: James Taylor Brings Heart and Soul to Hollywood Bowl
Carole King
James Taylor is Martha’s Vineyard in the 1970s, campfire circles in the New England woods and sun-drenched barbecues in western Massachusetts. He’s Boston’s Fenway Park and preppy college frat parties in the 1980s and acoustic guitar by the Charles River on muggy summer nights. And today, Taylor, American folk-rock hero with over 100 million records sold worldwide and five Grammys to his name, remains, at age 70, one of the most impactful singer-songwriters in the American music canon, a wistful and winsome troubadour with sweeping cross-generational influence. Just ask any of the gangly tweens sitting cross-legged around a bonfire roasting marshmallows at sleepaway camp this summer while singing “You’ve Got a Friend,” the Carole King-penned classic included on “Tapestry” but made famous on Taylor’s 1971 album “Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon.”

Taylor brought his All-Star Band and special guest Sheryl Crow to Thursday night’s Hollywood Bowl performance,...
