Brother of Texas governor John Connally; brother-in-law of Nellie Connally.

During the filming of Rencontres du troisième type (1977), he was known on the roll-call sheets as "The American Eagle" because of his shock of white hair and his authoritarian demeanor. In fact, director 'Steven Spielberg (I)' was so impressed with the way he spoke that he kept taking lines of dialogue from other actors to give to him.

Was a delegate to the 1956 Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
