Review: Preston Sturges' "The Lady Eve" (1941) Starring Barbara Stanwyck And Henry Fonda; Criterion Blu-ray Edition

“Pratfalls And A Zoom Supplement”

By Raymond Benson

The brilliance of Preston Sturges’ brilliant screwball comedy aside, what is striking about the new Blu-ray edition of the filmmaker’s 1941 The Lady Eve from The Criterion Collection is the supplement that is a Zoom conversation between Tom Sturges (Preston’s son), filmmakers Peter Bogdanovich, James L. Brooks, and Ron Shelton, and critics Leonard Maltin, Kenneth Turan, and Susan King. While it’s unclear if this is the first acknowledgment of the Covid-19 pandemic in the production of home video supplementary features, this reviewer found the inclusion to be revelatory. How amazing it is to see these personages in the Brady Bunch-style squares all discussing Sturges and the film, and mirroring what many of us are doing while working at home. At one point, Brooks’ internet connection fails and his image freezes. All the others...

The Forgotten: Douglas Sirk's "Hitler's Madman" (1943)
Hitler's Madman, a WWII propaganda film, had a complex origin story: filmed shortly after the real events it depicts (the assassination of senior Nazi Reinhard Heydrich and the subsequent massacre of the Czech town of Lidice in reprisal), the appearance of Fritz Lang's similarly-themed Hangmen Also Die! caused its release to be delayed and it also suffered a title change from the catchier Hitler's Hangman. On the plus side, the tiny independent production, shot in just a week, was acquired by MGM and given a bigger budget for re-shoots to enhance its production values. But Sirk ruefully admitted the new scenes actually weakened the film's Poverty Row sensibility, which gave it a slight documentary flavor which was useful. The Lang film is, I think, superior all round, but the two make interesting companions and Sirk's is tougher, in a way. Lang's movie, originally written by Brecht, attempts to build in a small victory,...

Hitler’s Madman
Douglas Sirk's first American movie came out so well that Prc sold it to MGM, earning Sirk a promotion out of the Poverty Row studios. John Carradine is excellent - and underplays! -- as the Hangman of Prague who moonlights as a depraved sex criminal. But the context in this wartime propaganda movie is serious -- it commemorates the Nazi murder of an entire Czech town. 'Run All Night' (Blu-ray) Review
Ever since 2008's Taken, we haven't seen Oskar Schindler in the same light. Liam Neeson was falling from grace until that smash hit and ever since has been a staple in modern action films including three collaborations with Jaun Collet-Serra (Unknown, Non-Stop), most recently the aptly titled Run All Night. Starting out, it seems all too familar. Neeson plays a father figure with a troubled past. He looks like he'll kill you just as fast as he may invite you to the bar for drinks. Considering his most recent work, it seems he's stuck in an infinite loop of playing badass 60-year olds, but he provides some of his best work of recent memory here, and predispositions soon fade. That's not to say this isn't a typecast -- it is -- but he does completely own his role and add depth to this story about fathers protecting what's theirs and owning up to their faults,...

Dye Another Day: Jaume Collet-Serra and Liam Neeson’s Three Colors Trilogy
Solid ground doesn’t exist in the cinema of Jaume Collet-Serra and Liam Neeson. Theirs is an action cinema of distress where the mental instability of each protagonist blurs the boundaries of seemingly tight spatial parameters. Conflict unfolds violently and manipulatively within manmade (and psychological) bubbles, as vast as the multiple boroughs of New York City or as small as the cramped fuselage of a passenger jet. There is no escape, only the desperate and unflinching pursuit of truth, moral direction, and family safety. The bad guys often win, but the good guys always gain closure.Angular compositions and desperate tracking shots populate 2011’s Unknown, 2014’s Non-Stop, and 2015’s Run All Night. Images overlap, tip, ascend and dive to visualize the world as one big box of quick sand. The camera propels through space like a boomerang, challenging logic and defying gravity with reckless abandon. Every step forward brings us...

What Was With That Bizarre Cameo In Run All Night?
If you saw Run All Night this weekend, you either loved it or you hated it. While it is a film that primarily focuses on surface level emotional detail, it makes up for this shallowness by providing a seriously intriguing chase through the back alleys of a New York we don.t often see in the movies. It also helps that Liam Neeson is a badass through and through, and his rapport with Ed Harris brings the heaviest emotional weight to which the film is able to lay claim. For the most part, Run All Night.s attempts at emotional storytelling are decent, but there.s one scene that just falls flat on its face, and it contains one of the most head-scratching cameos in recent memory. If you haven.t seen the film, consider yourself warned for spoilers. So in the third act, Neeson.s Jimmy Conlon is shot...

Run All Night | Review
About Last Night : Collet-Serra’s Latest Neeson Rating

You may not have realized it, but while the Taken trilogy was warping its course through a series of cinematic banalities, ripened action star Liam Neeson set off on a course of similarly themed vehicles with director Jaume Collet-Serra, resulting in this, their third collaboration, Run All Night. A familiar cocktail of second generation blue collar honor struggling to overcome the stagnant moral nadir of organized crime sleaze gets streamlined into a by-the-numbers action flick that only manages to feel as stale is it is unbelievable, like nuggets of Scorsese whirled through a Luc Besson meat grinder. At this point, we kinda know what to expect from the Liam Neeson school of action film stardom, and wading through screenwriter Brad Ingelsby’s disappointing treatment of hard-won street redemption, you won’t find anything remotely surprising.

Grizzled loner Jimmy Conlon (Neeson) seems...

Run All Night Review
We're  only two and a half months into 2015, and already we have Liam Neeson doing his action hero schtick for a second time. Teaming up with director Jaume Collet-Serra for a third time, after Unknown and Non-Stop, Neeson is Jimmy Conlon, an aging hit man for the mob who has fallen on hard times, depending on hand outs and alcohol to survive. When his estranged son Mike (Joel Kinnaman) witnesses a murder carried out by the son of Jimmy's former boss and childhood friend Shawn McGuire (Ed Harris), Jimmy is forced to take on his former boss to ensure his son's survival. So, pretty much what you have come to expect from Neeson in this stage of his career, but unlike the mindless action dreck he has turned out in recent months, Run All Night at least tries to deliver an entertatining ride. Set in New York on Christmas Eve (no real reason given,...

'Run All Night' (2015) Movie Review
Run All Night is the third outing for the now bonafide, 62-year-old action star Liam Neeson and director Jaume Collet-Serra. Previously you had Unknown or Non-Stop, and neither were exactly hits, though the latter's attempt at Hitchcock was certainly the better of the two. In a weird way Run All Night tops them both, but manages to do so thanks largely to performances, having much less to do with Brad Ingelsby's script as the reasoning for why the action takes place is rather ridiculous and each and every action sequence suffers some sort of set back, be it length or just a sheer lack of logic. The performances, however, allow the audience to overlook some of these issues, resulting in a movie that's more entertaining than it deserves to be. More than anything else, Run All Night is a tale of redemption. Neeson plays Jimmy Conlon, an ex-hitman who...

Composer Junkie Xl Discusses His Score For Run All Night; Listen To Four Tracks
Opening in theaters on Friday, March 13th is Run All Night. The action thriller stars Oscar nominees Liam Neeson and Ed Harris and is directed of Jaume Collet-Serra (Non-stop).

Brooklyn mobster and prolific hit man Jimmy Conlon (Neeson), once known as The Gravedigger, has seen better days. Longtime best friend of mob boss Shawn Maguire (Harris), Jimmy, now 55, is haunted by the sins of his past—as well as a dogged police detective (Vincent D’Onofrio) who’s been one step behind Jimmy for 30 years. Lately, it seems Jimmy’s only solace can be found at the bottom of a whiskey glass.

But when Jimmy’s estranged son, Mike (Joel Kinnaman), becomes a target, Jimmy must make a choice between the crime family he chose and the real family he abandoned long ago. With Mike on the run, Jimmy’s only penance for his past mistakes may be to keep...

Run All Night -The Review
It would appear that Liam Neeson is continuing his Charles Bronson-esque revenge spree with Run All Night. After countless of films that are all marketed in the same style as Taken and its sequels, you might be surprised to hear that this new genre exercise is more than just a run and gun thriller. In fact, thanks to a script that lends the occasionally exhaustive action some deeper meaning, Run All Night is one of the best films Liam Neeson has done in years. Now if only Jaume Collet-Serra was as interested in highlighting the drama as much as all the running around, we might have more than just a “good” action marathon.

Neeson plays former hitman and now current alcoholic Jimmy Conlon. Years ago he became notorious in the New York crime scene for his skills of disposing targets. His former boss Shawn Maguire (Ed Harris) has also...

‘Run All Night’ is an enjoyable jog through familiar territory
Run All Night

Written by Brad Ingelsby

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra

USA, 2015

Middle-aged men with a particular skillset have found their patron saint in Liam Neeson. Luckily, a distinctive visual style and some added character detailing keep Run All Night running smoother than most of its sluggish brethren. There’s certainly nothing new here, but this slick little film dispenses its thrills and kills with surprising effectiveness.

Reconciling family with professional loyalty can get pretty confusing for a hit-man. Jimmy Conlon (Neeson) might have gotten out of the game years ago, but it takes a constant influx of booze to silence the cries of his victims. His guilt tsunami is further stoked by an ill-advised decision to choose the company of his lifelong friend and boss, Shawn (Ed Harris), over raising his own son Mike (Joel Kinnaman). Not surprisingly, Mike hates his absentee father, even forbidding him from meeting his wife and young children.

Run All Night movie review: bloody bromance breakup
Too long and too same-old, and even Liam Neeson’s effortless tough-guy charm can only carry this familiar-feeling film so far. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Yup. We get it. Liam Neeson is one of the all-time great Hollywood tough guys. I’m not even being sarcastic. In Run All Night, his Jimmy Conlon is an obnoxious alcoholic bum, a former hitman for the Irish mob in New York who’s haunted by all the people he killed. He’s hated by his adult son, Mike (Joel Kinnaman: RoboCop, Easy Money: Hard to Kill), who wants nothing to do with his father, and with good reason: Jimmy Conlon is not a nice man. At all. And yet somehow, Neeson (Taken 3, A Walk Among the Tombstones) suckers us into sympathizing with him...

Liam Neeson: 'I might quit action movies in two years'
Liam Neeson
Liam Neeson has suggested that he will retire from action movies in two years' time.

The actor - who has appeared in films like Taken, Non-Stop and A Walk Among The Tombstones - said that "there is a limit" to the number of roles he can take on.

On when he plans to retire from the genre, he told Good Morning America: "Maybe two more years. If God spares me and I'm healthy. But after that, I'll stop [the action], I think.

"I'm in a very, career-wise, great place. [After] the success of certainly the Taken films, Hollywood seems to see me in a different light.

"I get sent quite a few action-oriented scripts, which is great. I'm not knocking it. It's very flattering. But there is a limit, of course."

Neeson's latest effort Run All Night is released on Friday (March 13) in the Us and the UK.

The Irish star appears...

Ed Harris at an event for Appaloosa (2008)
Run All Night review: Can we handle another Liam Neeson thriller?
Ed Harris at an event for Appaloosa (2008)
Director: Jaume Collet-Serra; Screenwriter: Brad Ingelsby; Starring: Liam Neeson, Ed Harris, Joel Kinnaman, Common; Running time: 114 mins; Certificate: 15

Run All Night? More like Plod For 114 Minutes. This pedestrian thriller plonks poor Liam Neeson back in a leather jacket and armed with a gun for another one of those 'Taken Lite' outings. It's a big disappointment given the star's last collaboration with director Jaume Collet-Serra was the hugely enjoyable Non-Stop.

It's an old school tale of divided loyalty that lacks the creative ingenuity required to make it stand out from all the other pretenders. Neeson effortlessly elicits empathy in his role as Jimmy Conlon, a beleaguered, alcoholic hitman who has to choose between saving his estranged son Mike (Joel Kinnaman) or remaining devoted to the honorable but lethal figure of his mob boss Shawn Maguire (Ed Harris).

If the revelation that Ed Harris is playing a character called 'Shawn Maguire' amuses you,...

Run All Night Review
Man, you’d think that gangsters would have learned not to mess with Liam Neeson’s kids by now, right?

Run All Night finds the actor walking an increasingly well-trodden path: playing a middle-aged man with “a very particular set of skills,” a beaten-up leather jacket, a Beretta and a son in mortal peril. This week’s Bryan Mills happens to be named Jimmy Conlon, a former hitman for an Irish-American mob in New York.

We first meet Jimmy as a pitiable boozehound, derisively mocked by the denizens of his local pub for farting in his sleep. He was once feared as the blunt instrument of mob boss and childhood friend Shawn Maguire (Ed Harris), but the subsequent years haven’t been so kind. Guilt for the death he wrought weighs heavily on his shoulders, mixed with a dash of low-level misery at his surviving family hating his guts. Things...

Run All Night TV Spot Sees Liam Nesson And Ed Harris Square Off
When it comes down to marketing a film, particularly one with its roots firmly in the action genre, few phrases are recycled as many times as the good ol’ adage stating that “there’s a storm coming.” It’s one that has become trite through repetition, but when your movie has Liam Nesson and Ed Harris square off against one another, then perhaps we can turn a blind eye.

That’s precisely the set-up for Jaume Collett-Sera’s Run All Night, a no-holds-barred B-movie that will have Nesson play the part of Jimmy Conlon, a former hit man whose days of killing are long behind him. That streak soon comes to an end, though, when former friend and mob boss Shawn Maguire (Harris) returns to the fore when his estranged son stumbles in front of Nesson’s proverbial crosshairs. And so, our typically grizzled protagonist must choose between one life and the next.

Run All Night Trailer: Liam Neeson and Ed Harris Aren’t Friends Anymore
The first trailer for Run All Night has arrived reuniting Liam Neeson his Unknown and Non-Stop director Jaume Collet-Serra to play an aging hitman (of course) who has to protect his son form his former boss, Ed Harris. It looks and sounds like a Liam Neeson action movie, so if you’re into that (who isn’t really?) you should enjoy this promising trailer.

Liam Neeson once again protects his kid at all costs in 'Run All Night' trailer
Ed Harris, Liam Neeson, Common, and Joel Kinnaman in Night Run (2015)
Liam Neeson returns to grizzled, fatherly-action-star character form in the trailer for Warner Bros.' Run All Night.  Neeson plays a mob hit man, Jimmy Conlon, and gets entangled in a mess when he kills the son of best friend and mob boss, Shawn Maguire (Ed Harris), while protecting his own estranged son, Mike (Joel Kinnaman). The title of the film comes into play as Jimmy runs all night shooting up mobsters to keep Shawn from getting to his boy. As the trailer shows, once Eminem starts singing "Cinderella Man," things get really hard, really fast. Run All Night will...

Liam Nesson Shows Off A Familiar Set Of Skills In Run All Night Trailer
At the ripe old age of 62, Liam Nesson shows no signs of slowing down. Following the breakout success of Taken back in 2008, the Northern Irish star has swapped brooding dramas to become a bona fide action star. And judging by the explosive new trailer for Run All Night, that trend looks set to continue unabated.

Reuniting with director Jaume Collet-Serra — who helped cement Nesson’s action hero credentials through Unknown and last year’s airborne thriller Non-Stop — the actor’s latest outing will have him step into the shoes of “The Gravedigger,” an iconic hitman who soon finds his past catching up with him thick and fast. And one figment that appears to be causing the most concern is Ed Harris’ Shawn Maguire, who leads the charge to target Nesson’s son, played here by Joel Kinnaman.

Rounding out the cast for Run All Night are Vincent D’Onofrio, Holt McCallany,...

Run All Night Trailer Has Liam Neeson Squaring Off Against Ed Harris
Warner Bros. has released the first Run All Night trailer. Liam Neeson reunites with his Unknown and Non-Stop director Jaume Collet-Serra to play an aging hitman who, in order to protect his son, must take on his former boss in a single night. Despite the self-serious rendition of "O Danny Boy" that kicks in on the trailer about halfway through, the film actually looks pretty good. It could just as easily been called "Dangerous Dads" given the central premise at hand, and while Neeson's been starring in a number of same-looking thrillers for the past few years, this one at least has a hook: the entire movie takes place over the course of one night. But the most important thing here is that Run All Night is a film that's essentially Liam Neeson vs. Ed Harris. That's all we really need to know. Hit the jump to check out the Run All Night trailer.

Liam Neeson Continues Kicking Ass and Taking Names in First Run All Night Images
Liam Neeson is at it again, killin’ those bad guys in a variety of dimly lit locales. The thriller marks Neeson’s third film with Unknown and Non-Stop director Jaume Collet-Serra, and promises a showdown between Neeson and Ed Harris’ Mob boss.
