Ralph Fiennes' 77% Rotten Tomatoes-Rated Take on 'The Odyssey' Lands Top Streaming Spot
Image
Ralph Fiennes has been the talk of the town lately thanks to his recent Oscar-nominated performance in Conclave, but he also recently starred in another movie that’s become a hit on streaming. Fiennes can be seen playing the legendary Odysseus in The Return, the R-rated adventure drama that tells the story of Odysseus’ return to Ithaca, where he finds his wife held prisoner by those with desires to be king. The Return recently premiered on Paramount+, where it’s streaming as part of the Showtime extension plan, and it has made a swift run into the top 10, sitting at #4 at the time of writing. The film earned strong scores of 77% from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed just over $2 million at the box office during an extremely limited theatrical run.

The Return is the perfect watch for fans who are excited to see Christopher Nolan...

The Return review – Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes bring fierce class to elemental Odyssey adaptation
Uberto Pasolini
Uberto Pasolini’s raw and urgent drama, from a draft by Edward Bond, sees a traumatised Odysseus face the shameful aftermath of war

The film world is on tenterhooks for Christopher Nolan’s forthcoming Imax-epic treatment of Homer’s Odyssey, but Uberto Pasolini’s fierce, raw drama of the poem’s final sections, describing Odysseus’s traumatised return to Ithaca after the sack of Troy, may well give Nolan something to live up to. Pasolini collaborated on the script with screenwriter John Collee, evidently developed from a draft playwright Edward Bond wrote in the 90s; among other things, this film deserves attention as the final work from Bond (who died in 2024).

The Return is an elementally violent movie about Ptsd, survivor guilt, abandonment, Freudian dysfunction and ruined masculinity. Juliette Binoche is the deserted queen Penelope, enigmatically reserving her opinions and dignity, refusing to believe the absent king is dead and...

Ralph Fiennes, Isabella Rossellini, John Lithgow, and Stanley Tucci in Conclave (2024)
‘Conclave’ Wins 4 BAFTAs, Including Best Film, at 2025 Awards (Complete Winners List)
Ralph Fiennes, Isabella Rossellini, John Lithgow, and Stanley Tucci in Conclave (2024)
“Conclave” won Best Film at the 2025 EE BAFTA Film Awards, leading the pack with four BAFTAs overall. The British equivalent of the Oscars took place February 16 from the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in central London, honoring the best in film for its 78th annual edition.

Edward Berger’s “Conclave” led all films with 12 BAFTA nominations, and it won Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Adapted Screenplay for Peter Straughan, and Best Editing. It’s an upset after “Anora” swept all three of the DGAs, PGAs, and WGAs. The last film to win those three prizes, but not Best Picture at the Oscars was “Brokeback Mountain,” but then again, it did win the BAFTA for Best Film.

“Anora” did have a strong showing though, with Mikey Madison pulling off an upset and winning Leading Actress over Demi Moore for “The Substance.” “Anora” also won Best Casting, though Madison lost...

“Monkey Man, Any Wick Way You Can… Dev Patel’s Senseless Bloodbath Is In Bad Taste” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
There is no telling about tastes. Dev Patel’s senseless bloodbath Monkey Man (Dev plans a Hanuman avatar) has been nominated for a BAFTA award in the Outstanding Debut as director category. Sobhita Dhulipala who has a role as commodious as Jacqueline Fernandez in Fateh, is very happy.

I am happy for her. But not quite in the waltzy mode over the film. Watching Dev Patel’s much-extolled directorial debut, rightly banned in India and from Netflix where it was scheduled for streaming, is a painful experience. The stylized relentless violence, with stunt passages choreographed like the opposite of a ballet, are sickening in their self-important gratuitousness.

But I would forgive the endless pointless carnage—to each his own John Wick, I guess—were it not for the strange uncalled-for references to Hindu mythology that keep popping up with nagging regularity all through the sanguinary excursion, as if to remind...

‘Lee’: Kate Winslet Connected To Lee Miller Because “We Live In A Time Where It’s Still So Challenging For Women To Just Be Themselves”
Image
In making the film Lee, about World War II correspondent Lee Miller, Kate Winslet chose to champion a woman who simply refused to become what society dictated. Against all odds, shucking off her reputation as a fashion model, at a time when women were not allowed to work with the British Army, Miller determinedly made her way into a career as a war correspondent, venturing into dangerous territory alongside troops, capturing Nazi atrocities. However, the extent of her work was largely undiscovered until, upon her death, her son Antony Penrose stumbled on her archives in the family attic. For Winslet, who would produce and star as Miller, this was a story of an unsung hero; a woman who was so much more than the oft-used description ‘muse’ to the artist Man Ray. So strongly did Winslet feel that at times during production, she dug into her own pockets to keep it going.

‘The Return’ Review: Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes Are Typically Magnetic in a Too-Stripped-Down Odysseus Update
Image
Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes, two of the greatest global actors of their generation or any, stage an “English Patient” reunion with Uberto Pasolini’s stately and somber “The Return.” The epic film, shot in Greece and Italy last year, retells Homer’s classic and oft-recycled epic “Odyssey” through a stripped-down lens that frames the story of Odysseus (Fiennes), Penelope (Binoche), and their son Telemachus (Charlie Plummer) as a tale without gods and monsters and instead more of a dysfunctional family narrative. What’s lost is the heat and swashbuckling adventure of the original tale, a humanist turn that finds Odysseus at the end of his mortal coil, Fiennes at first haggard, awash naked on the shores of Ithaca after a shipwreck has left him unmoored and divorced from his former kingdom. The actors are prime, but the movie is a solemn affair that could use more grandeur.

The Return Review: Ralph Fiennes Delivers A Fiercely Steely Odysseus In This Boldly Grounded Odyssey Adaptation
Image
The Return is more than just a cinematic reunion for Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche; it is a return to basics from director Uberto Pasolini, who shares a more grounded interpretation of Homer's The Odyssey. Written by Pasolini, John Collee, and Edward Bond, Pasolini filmed in Italy and Greece's Corfu and Peloponnese regions, bringing little artificiality to these locations with VFX or elaborate sets.

The locations remain largely untouched, making the story of Odysseus grounded in reality. At times, it feels like Pasolini, Collee, and Bond aren't adapting a literary epic but a story from a history textbook. Lacking Hollywood's usual embellishments and adornments, The Return is an adaptation that seeks to center the humanity and sincerity of Odysseus' journey and Penelope's resolve, returning to the basic themes of the poem.

After two decades away, Odysseus returns to Ithaca, haggard and unrecognizable, only to find his kingdom transformed...

The Return Review | The End of The Odyssey Retold
Image
Ralph Fiennes delivers the most physical performance of his storied career in The Return, a lean and visceral retelling of Homer's epic Greek poem, The Odyssey. He's joined on screen by Juliette Binoche for the first time in nearly 30 years after their pairing in The English Patient, which won the 1996 Oscar for Best Film. An etched-out-of-stone Fiennes and harried Binoche give their classic literary characters searing humanism. The Return serves as a truthful parable of war's horrific consequences, the trauma that haunts survivors, and the undying loyalty of love.

A naked man washes up on the shores of Ithaca. The island has suffered mightily since King Odysseus (Fiennes) left 20 years earlier with their best warriors to fight the Trojan War. His long absence and presumed death has led to a scourge of scoundrels and villainy. Ruthless suitors terrorize Ithaca as they wait for Queen Penelope (Binoche) to choose a new husband.

‘The Return’ Review: Uberto Pasolini’s Minimalist Retelling of Homer’s ‘The Odyssey’
Image
Uberto Pasolini adapts epic poetry on an intimate scale in The Return, which loosely transposes the second half of Homer’s The Odyssey for the screen. Gone are the gods and monsters, or anything of a mythological bent, in this interpretation of Odysseus’s decades-in-the-making voyage home to Ithaca. Pasolini reduces the scale without minimizing the stakes of a husband, father, and warrior who must come to terms with small but mighty forces, from the ravages of age to the unyielding passage of time.

For a film based on one of the oldest works of literature, Pasolini leverages little in the way of words to tell his version of the story. Rather than relying on verse to have us learn about the characters’ responses to various developments, The Return often turns to its actors to convey or process information in close-ups. When talents like Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche sign...

‘The Return’ Trailer: Ralph Fiennes Is a Bare-Chested and Bloodied Odysseus Battling for Juliette Binoche
Image
Ralph Fiennes may be turning heads this awards season for his buzzy performance as Cardinal Lawrence in “Conclave,” but the two-time Academy Award nominee is showing off a different set of skills in epic saga “The Return.”

Fiennes stars as the iconic hero Odysseus in the TIFF-selected feature, which is co-written, directed, and produced by Uberto Pasolini, who previously moved viewers to tears this year with “Nowhere Special.” Juliette Binoche plays Odysseus’ wife Penelope, who has to protect the throne in the aftermath of the Trojan War.

The official synopsis reads: “After 20 years away, Odysseus (Fiennes) washes up on the shores of Ithaca, haggard and unrecognizable. The King has returned from the Trojan War, but much has changed in his kingdom. His beloved wife Penelope (Binoche) is a prisoner in her own home, hounded by suitors vying to be king. Kate Winslet in Lee

In Lee, cinematographer and director Ellen Kuras explores a short yet significant chapter in the life of American model, photographer and war correspondent Lee Miller. Beginning in the 1930s sunlit France, Kuras and screenwriters Liz Hannah, Marion Hume and John Collee, focus on Miller's (Kate Winslet) experiences as a correspondent in Europe during World War II. She would capture some of the strongest images of the conflict, including the horrors of the concentration camps, and she would even pose for a photo in Hitler's private bathtub.

As a cinematographer, Kuras has shot Michel Gondry's Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and Be Kind Rewind, Alan Rickman's directorial feature A Little Chaos and Sam Mendes' Away We Go, as well as the Fran Lebowitz documentary Public Speaking for Martin Scorsese, and the miniseries Pretend It's A City, featuring Lebowitz and Scorsese. Kate Winslet in The Orange British Academy Film Awards: Red Carpet (2010)
Lee Review | Kate Winslet Triumphs in Must-See WW2 Biopic
Kate Winslet in The Orange British Academy Film Awards: Red Carpet (2010)
Kate Winslet has been stoking the creative fires of Lee for some time. Long before the new biopic about acclaimed American war correspondent and photographer Lee Miller was fully realized, the Oscar- and Emmy-winning actress contacted Tony Penrose, Lee Miller and Roland Penroses son. She wanted to know why nobody had made a film about his famous mother. Penrose informed her that many people had tried and that there was an entire box of screenplays in the attic of potential movies that never went anywhere. Penrose reportedly told Winslet that the writers just didnt quite get her, referencing his mother.

Winslet did. And by the time director Ellen Kuras became involved, it was clear that the film would be in good hands. Kuras is an award-winning cinematographer, who impressed with her work on Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Summer of Sam, and The Betrayal. She exhibits creative veracity here,...

Lee Review: Kate Winslet's Fiery Performance Struggles To Fuel The Flames Of A Mundane Biopic
Image
Kate Winslet has had a long career, taking on diverse roles that have often been memorable. Shes always been outstanding, and thats no different in Lee, in which she plays the titular Lee Miller, a model-turned-war photographer. Director Ellen Kuras film, which Liz Hannah, John Collee, and Marion Hume penned, doesnt live up to Winslets performance. I felt detached from Lees life for much of the film. Characters come and go including Marion Cotillard in a small, barely there role as Lees friend Solange but they arent developed enough and are often paper-thin cutouts of real people.

Lee Review: Kate Winslet gives a stellar performance in a conventional war biopic
Image
Plot: The story of American photographer Lee Miller, a fashion model who became an acclaimed war correspondent for Vogue magazine during World War II.

Review: Operating from the belief that Kate Winslet cannot deliver a bad performance, I went into Lee expecting the acclaimed actress to be excellent. As a surprise to no one, Winslet is astoundingly good in a passion project she has shepherded for almost a decade. At one point, Winslet financed cast salaries out of her own pocket as well as acted with a brutal back injury sustained during filming. While those trials have added to the aura exuded by Lee Miller over the course of the film, Lee is nevertheless a formulaic biopic kept afloat by a stellar cast that includes Alexander Skarsgard, Andy Samberg, Marion Cotillard, Andrea Riseborough, and more. The story still packs an emotional punch with striking historical context from World War II...

Kate Winslet is Done Playing Nice After ‘Disgusting’ Remark from Crew While Filming Topless Scene: ‘We’ve got to change this dynamic’
Image
What’s the secret sauce to truly embodying a character on screen? Is it a dash of authenticity and a pinch of body positivity? Kate Winslet, our beloved Academy Award-winning chameleon, has tossed caution to the wind as she prepares to portray the legendary photojournalist Lee Miller in the upcoming biopic Lee, directed by Ellen Kuras.

Kate Winslet in Lee | Credit: Sky Original

Winslet didn’t just step into Miller’s shoes; she practically did a waltz in them. But as she geared up for her performance, she encountered some less-than-stellar advice on set. A crew member suggested she suck in her stomach to conceal her “belly rolls” during a topless scene.

Lee: What We Can Learn From Kate Winslet’s Proud Message

In Tinseltown, where the quest for perfection often leads to a treadmill marathon and a strict salad-only diet, Kate Winslet, 48, is flipping the script. With her upcoming...

‘The Return’ Review: Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche Shine in an ‘Odyssey’ Adaptation That Burns Too Slowly
Image
In The Return, a soldier comes home after being away for many years at war, looking haggard and exhausted. His friends don’t recognize him, he has a difficult time readjusting to society and even his wife doesn’t seem to know who he is. It seems a fairly familiar story, except that the main characters’ names are Odysseus and Penelope, the setting is the island of Ithaca and the war took place in Troy. Yes, this film — receiving its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before a theatrical release later this year — is an adaptation of a section of Homer’s The Odyssey.

But don’t expect appearances by gods or goddesses or mythological creatures created by the likes of Ray Harryhausen. Rather, director/co-screenwriter Uberto Pasolini (Still Life, Nowhere Special) strips the tale to its bare essentials, resulting in a stark, solemnly paced experience that viewers...

Juliette Binoche Says She Felt “Brother and Sister” With Ralph Fiennes Reuniting for ‘The Return’
Image
Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche reunited over a quarter-century after they starred together in the Oscar-winning The English Patient to star in the classical drama The Return, which had a world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on Saturday night.

While Fiennes was not on hand at TIFF owing to acting duties back in Britain, Binoche paid tribute to her co-star as she insisted they share similar qualities, despite coming from different countries and backgrounds.

“I always love working with him (Fiennes), because there’s so much rhythm, around the weight of words, the weight of silence and still is. It’s very genuine,” Binoche told the Roy Thomson Hall audience after receiving a short, yet brisk standing ovation when The Return concluded.

“And I feel very much like, even though we’re husband and wife in this film, we’re like brother and sister. We’re very much alike,...

The Advice Kate Winslet Gave Andy Samberg for His Dramatic Role in Lee
Image
Winslet will, naturally, be stepping into the shoes of Vogue's WWII correspondent, but she'll be far from alone. Rounding out the cast is Inception's Marion Cotillard, Oblivion's Andrea Riseborough, Challengers' Josh O'Connor, The Northman's Alexander Skarsgrd, Portrait of a Lady on Fire's Nomie Merlant, and none other than Saturday Night Live's Andy Samberg. Before one wonders whether Samberg will be out of his league with such thespians, it's important to remember that, one, he's a ridiculously talented guy, and, two, it's not his first dramatic role, even if it's his first straightforward drama.

Samberg also had a lead role in the comedy-drama Celeste and Jesse Forever, a supporting role in fellow genre-blender Brigsby Bear, and co-led the brilliant Palm Springs. He also branched out a bit by playing a quasi-villainous variation of himself in Jake Johnson's fantastic directorial debut, Self Reliance, streaming exclusively on Hulu.

Lee Trailer: Kate Winslet Is A War Photographer On The Frontline In WWII Biopic Movie
Image
2024 has been some year for the importance of photojournalists being writ large both on screen and in the news. Earlier this year, Alex Garland's Civil War envisioned its cautionary tale of an imagined new American Civil War literally through the lens of war photographers Lee Smith (Kirsten Dunst) and Jessie Cullen (Cailee Spaeny). Just this past weekend, a turning point in the States' Presidential race was captured in an extraordinary image of a bloody-eared Donald Trump. Now, in Cinematographer Ellen Kuras' feature directorial debut Lee, Oscar winner Kate Winslet is set to tell the story of a decade in the life of iconic American war photographer and WWII correspondent Lee Miller. Check out the trailer for the Sky Original movie below:

Produced by Winslet and written by Liz Hannah, Marion Hume, and John Collee, Lee is something of a passion project for the Titanic actor, who personally paid the...

Image
Cinematographer Ellen Kuras makes her stunning debut with Lee, a powerful depiction of war journalism and one woman’s fight to fulfill her duty as someone hoping to make a difference while telling the stories of heroes and villains in a world overrun with hatred and desperation. Roadside Attractions and Vertical unveiled today’s Lee trailer, previewing Kruas’s powerful film starring Kate Winslet as Lee Miller, a woman whose groundbreaking work in the field gave a voice to the voiceless.

Here’s the official synopsis for Lee:

Lee, the directorial feature from award-winning Cinematographer Ellen Kuras, portrays a pivotal decade in the life of American war correspondent and photographer Lee Miller (Kate Winslet). Miller’s singular talent and unbridled tenacity resulted in some of the 20th century’s most indelible images of war, including an iconic photo of Miller herself, posing defiantly in Hitler’s private bathtub.

‘Lee’ Trailer: Kate Winslet Leads WWII Photographer Biopic
Image
Kate Winslet is embodying the iconic American war correspondent and photographer Lee Miller for an eponymous biopic.

Winslet leads “Lee,” the directorial feature debut from award-winning cinematographer Ellen Kuras. The film centers on a decade in the life of Lee Miller, who was formerly a model and muse for male artists before traveling to Europe to report from the frontline during WWII. Lee infamously posed in Hitler’s private bathtub while abroad and used her Rolleiflex camera to “give a voice to the voiceless,” the film teases.

Its logline reads: What she captured on film in Dachau and throughout Europe was shocking and horrific. Her photographs of the war, its victims and its consequences remain among the most significant and historically important of the Second World War. She changed war photography forever, but Lee Miller paid an enormous personal price for what she witnessed and the stories she fought to tell.

Dev Patel's 88% John Wick Copycat Is Now Streaming After Jordan Peele Saved It From Netflix
Image
Dev Patel's action movie Monkey Man, compared to John Wick, impressed with high-octane action and political undertones. Originally set for Netflix, Monkey Man found a new home with Universal after Jordan Peele helped secure a theatrical release. Despite Netflix's concerns, Monkey Man saw critical acclaim and box office success, setting the stage for potential sequels.

Dev Patel's hit John Wick copycat Monkey Man is now streaming after Jordan Peele helped save it from Netflix. The original action movie described as an Indian John Wick debuted in theaters in April 2024 after plenty of anticipation. Although Dev Patel was already well-known thanks to his roles in Slumdog Millionaire, Lion, The Green Knight, and more, Monkey Man represented his directorial debut. The challenge of it coming in a gritty action movie that immediately brought John Wick comparisons only raised expectations about what could be in store.

Monkey Man ultimately delivered on these high expectations.
