'Matlock' Showrunner Made the Great 'Jane the Virgin' 10 Years Ago
Image
CBS has been celebrating its massively popular 2024 reboot of the classic show Matlock. With a gender-swapped lead role, played by the formidable Kathy Bates, and a legendary series to pull from, it's a recipe for success (and has already been renewed for a second season). However, knowing the woman behind the magic, it's unsurprising the new Matlock is thriving. Showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman has a lengthy history of writing and producing for television, having worked on shows like Hope & Faith, Gilmore Girls, Charmed, and several others, but perhaps the golden egg of her career so far is the hit CW show Jane the Virgin, which aired from 2014 to 2019, and was loosely adapted from a Venezuelan soap opera from 2002.

10 TV Shows Whose Penultimate Episodes Were Better Than Their Finales
Image
Warning: This article discusses topics of violence and suicide.

TV show finales were always a big event, but for some titles, the penultimate episode was actually better. Second-to-last episodes were typically to build anticipation for the shows ending, but many hit their peak before they reached the finale. Even some of the best TV shows of all time had better penultimate episodes. However, this didnt mean that their finales were bad; several were critically acclaimed and incredibly memorable, but their predecessor still stood as a better story.

Just because these episodes were better than the last, it didnt mean that they were a replacement for the conclusion. However, some final episodes werent great, and there was a far better option to serve as its ending. Certain TV finales ensured a revival would never happen, whereas others left the door open to be revisited in the future. Regardless of whether their finale was perfect or terrible,...

10 Massive Plot Twists That Ruined Their Shows
Image
Unexpected plot twists can detrimentally impact a show, nullifying seasons of investment and betraying viewer trust. Contrived plot twists that disregard established character arcs and violate narrative principles sacrifice substance for mere shock value. Betraying characters through unrealistic twists and shallow surprises compromises the integrity of the show and frustrates invested fans.

A well-executed TV show plot twist should shock and impress, highlighting ingenuity and talent to enhance the viewing experience. Unfortunately, there are instances where an excessively large and unexpected plot twist can detrimentally impact a show, nullifying seasons of investment and rendering it no longer worth watching. When done right, twists like The Red Wedding episode in Game of Thrones electrify, driving intrigue and acclaim. However, poor narrative turns can also retroactively damage goodwill, especially if they seem to betray core characters or dynamics. Dedicating years to a show, reckless plot detours can sabotage the emotional journey.

15 Biggest Plot Twists In Sitcoms, Ranked
Image
Sitcom plot twists can be unexpected and surprising, even though comedy is their main focus. Not all plot twists in sitcoms are lighthearted, as they can include darker themes such as death and affairs. Sometimes sitcoms throw off their audience by introducing unexpected plot twists, like sudden pregnancies or characters coming back to life.

While a TV sitcom's main purpose is not to shock or surprise audiences with plot twists, there have been some completely unexpected moments in the sitcom format. A big shock in any television show is often foreshadowed, although this isn't exclusively, and when it isn't, it makes the moment even more surprising. Even in between laughs and giggles, sitcoms still have the power to completely throw off an audience.

It's worth noting that even in comedies, their plot twists aren't always light-hearted. Sitcoms have had their darker moments, even if they are underplayed with humor. Whether it is a death,...

Each season would have been adapted from a different book; the first installment was to be set “at a Napa Valley vineyard, where family secrets (and family members) don’t stay buried for long,” per the network. ‘Jane The Virgin’ Boss Breaks Down Bringing the Series Finale ‘Full Circle’ (Spoilers)
Justin Baldoni, Gina Rodriguez, and Brett Dier in Jane the Virgin (2014)
Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Chapter One-Hundred,” the series finale of “Jane the Virgin.”

Five years ago, the CW was dominated by surreal series centered on vampires and werewolves, demon hunters, a genetically altered soldier, and so-called homo superiors. But then came “Jane the Virgin.”

In a sea of dark, gritty dramas came a light, warmly colored broadcast take on a telenovela, punctuated by cheeky voiceover narration and on-screen text, and even the occasional slapstick comedy moments. From Jennie Snyder Urman, who had previously created “Emily Owens, MD” for the network, and starring relative newcomer Gina Rodriguez as the titular Jane, a Miami waitress who got accidentally artificially inseminated in the show’s pilot episode, the series put its network on the map with critics and as an awards contender. In a way, its success may have helped usher in additional female-centric fare such as “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,...

‘Jane the Virgin’ Creator Jennie Snyder Urman on Series Finale’s Happy Endings, Big Narrator Reveal
Gina Rodriguez in Jane the Virgin (2014)
(Warning: This post contains major spoilers for the “Jane the Virgin” series finale)

And now, friends, we’ve come to the end of “Jane the Virgin,” and in classic telenovela fashion, the story closed with our titular heroine, played by Gina Rodriguez, getting her happy ending: marrying Rafael (Justin Baldoni), the father of her son Mateo and the man destiny has been pushing her toward since the pilot.

Actually, everyone close to Jane got what they wanted. Petra (Yael Grobglas) reunited with J.R. (Rosario Dawson), Rogelio (Jaime Camil) achieve crossover fame as a star in the U.S., Xiomara (Andrea Navedo) was brave enough to move with Rogelio to New York City, and Alba (Ivonne Coll) glowed watching how much her daughter and granddaughter have grown up.

Jennie Snyder Urman at an event for Charmed (2018)
How ‘The Good Fight,’ ‘Jane The Virgin,’ ‘Superstore’ Make the Political Palatable
Jennie Snyder Urman at an event for Charmed (2018)
With politics dominating television from the actual news to talk and sketch shows, some writers and producers of scripted fare prefer to deliver escapist storytelling as an antidote. For others, reflecting the state of the world is imperative in order to keep their characters rooted in reality. The balance then becomes about finding a way to introduce an issue or mention of a political candidate that feels organic for the characters, and not a lecture for the audience.

“You have this corner of the world you — and the writers — can influence with this show,” says Jennie Snyder Urman, “Jane the Virgin” creator and showrunner. “It helps combat some of the horrible and damaging rhetoric. [You provide] empathy, compassion and characters that people can relate to and understand.”

“Jane the Virgin,” Urman’s take on a telenovela for the CW, was inherently political from the start. It follows the Villanueva family, whose matriarch immigrated illegally.

The CW Open To Developing Another ‘Jane The Virgin’ Spin-Off After Passing On ‘Jane The Novela’ Pilot
The CW is still keen on a Jane The Virgin spin-off despite not picking up Jane The Novela and is in talks with creator/exec producer Jennie Snyder Urman to develop another take.

Jane the Novela, from the creative team of Jane the Virgin, was written by Jane scribe Valentina Garza and directed by Brad Silberling. It was not a traditional spin-off but was a soapy, telenovela-inspired anthology series in the tradition of Jane the Virgin, where each season is based on a different fictional novel “written by” Jane Villanueva and narrated by the author herself. Jane the Virgin creator/exec producer Jennie Snyder Urman, star Gina Rodriguez, and exec producers Ben Silverman also executive produced.

The CW president Mark Pedowitz said, “We are big fans of Jennie Urman and Gina and we had great appreciation of what they did. In this particular situation, this spin-off didn’t quite get...

Emmy spotlight: Give Gina Rodriguez all the awards for that epic 7-minute ‘Jane the Virgin’ monologue
Brett Dier
“Jane the Virgin” answered most of your burning questions as how the eff Michael (Brett Dier) is alive in its fifth and final season premiere on Wednesday. But that wasn’t the episode’s big moment. Nah, that honor goes to Gina Rodriguez, who as Jane delivered a seven-minute (!) monologue (watch above) so good we’re just trying not to be sad thinking about the Emmy she won’t win for it but very much deserves to.

Requisite spoiler alert warning if you don’t want to know what happened with Michael. Last chance. Ok.

It turns out Rose (Bridget Regan) had faked Michael’s death and used electroshock therapy on his hippocampus and temporal lobe to erase all memory of who he was before. So for the past four years Michael has been living a quiet Montanan life as Jason (as in Bourne), a laconic ma’am-addressing fellow who is now a dog,...

‘Jane the Virgin’ Review: That 7-Minute Epic Monologue Is Everything That’s Great About the Series
Justin Baldoni, Gina Rodriguez, and Brett Dier in Jane the Virgin (2014)
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Jane the Virgin” Season 5 premiere episode, “Chapter Eighty-Two.”]

“Jane the Virgin” returned in top form Wednesday night for the premiere of its final season and resolved two cliffhangers: Who Jr (Rosario Dawson) shot and the apparent return of Jane’s husband Michael (Brett Dier) from the dead after four years. Both of these sensationalized stories stay true to the show’s telenovela roots, but the latter is this season’s pièce de résistance, through which the show explores how Jane (Gina Rodriguez) has grown and the ways that one forms a sense of self.

It turns out that this man is indeed Michael, but through an elaborate scheme, someone faked his death and gave him amnesia with electroshock therapy. He now calls himself Jason — after Jason Bourne — and has built a life for himself in Montana. Jason isn’t anything like Michael; he lacks humor, speaks in a slow drawl,...

‘Jane The Virgin’ Cast And Creator Reveal Final Season Details, Talk Bringing Joy Through Authentic Representation – PaleyFest
Gina Rodriguez in Jane the Virgin (2014)
As the final episode of Jane the Virgin is upon us, the cast got super emotional at the start of their PaleyFest panel. Star and executive producer Gina Rodriguez shed some tears as she and co-star Justin Baldoni remembered when they first started the show and how they had the opportunity to share their gifts with the world. The emotional moment soon turned into a fun lovefest and moderator Leanne Aguilera from Entertainment Tonight attempting to pull spoilers for the fifth and final season the cast. Show creator Jennie Snyder Urman and the cast kept tight-lipped, but they did spill some details.

Rodriguez, Baldoni and Urman were joined on stage by Andrea Navedo, Yael Grobglas, Elias Janssen, Jaime Camil, Anthony Mendez and Brett Dier. Missing from the panel was Ivonne Coll who was working on the spinoff Jane the Novela but was certainly there in spirit. Nonetheless, no time was...

‘Jane The Virgin’ Team Talks Importance of Representation, Taking Final Season Back to Series Roots
Justin Baldoni, Gina Rodriguez, and Brett Dier in Jane the Virgin (2014)
After five years, multiple time jumps and a number of timely storylines, in addition to takes on telenovela tropes, “Jane The Virgin” is coming to an end on the CW. While there may be some pressure to end the show on a positive and powerful note, it’s not a pressure that is completely foreign to series creator and showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman.

When she was first developing the show, Urman shared at the show’s final farewell Paleyfest panel in Hollywood, Calif. Wednesday, she felt “pressure to make sure the representation felt good to the actors and the writing team.”

“I just wanted to authentically represent these characters and tell a lot of stories [that] women can be different in so many ways. There’s no right or wrong,” Urman continued. “It’s all been so much more than I could have expected.”

Jane the Virgin: Who's Joining the Spinoff?
Jane the Virgin may be wrapping up its story in a neat little bow by the end of the year, but at least there's a spinoff in the works.

Thankfully, a familiar face from the regular series is attached to co-star on the potential new series titled Jane the Novella.

Deadline has revealed that Ivonne Coll, who plays Jane's grandma, Alba, on the soapy CW drama will take on the role of a brand new character on the spinoff.

Her character will be called Camila, the adoptive mother of Estela, the character the new show will revolve around for its first season if it gets a series order.

‘Jane The Virgin’ Team Talks Creating ‘Really Big Family Moments’ and ‘Closure’ for Final Season
“Jane The Virgin” is coming to an end on the CW with a fifth and final season but series creator and showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman and series star Gina Rodriguez have known this would be the end for quite some time.

“Around the second year Mark Pedowitz said to me that the show will go as long as the story goes. That is a gift, if you work in TV, that you don’t always get, and I was really grateful to that because it let me plan,” Urman said at the CW’s Television Critics Assn. press tour panel for the show Thursday.

Urman said she told Rodriguez around the third season that they had two more years worth of story “if you’re good.”

“Gina and I are real partners. She’s the one I come to with any and everything. We’re a team,” she explained.

Jane the Virgin: Spinoff of CW Series Being Developed
It's not over 'til it's over, and sometimes not even then. Although it's not technically "cancelled," the Jane the Virgin TV show will finish its original run on The CW with the upcoming fifth season, but the story may not end there. The network is developing a Jane the Virgin spinoff, which is still untitled. The current idea is for an anthology series featuring characters from Jane's novel, and Jane Villanueva herself (i.e. Gina Rodriguez) may narrate the new series.

A satirical CW telenovela, Jane the Virgin stars Gina Rodriguez, Andrea Navedo, Yael Grobglas, Ivonne Coll, Jaime Camil, and Justin Baldoni. Although saving herself for marriage, Jane (Rodriguez) gets pregnant, thanks to accidental artificial insemination, which turns her life upside down. Although no premiere date has been announced, the fifth and final season of Jane the Virgin...

With the approach of the fifth and final season of The CW’s Jane the Virgin, creator and showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman said fans can look forward to some of her best work and a satisfying ending.

“It’s some of our best stuff ever,” she said at Vulture Festival in Los Angeles on Sunday. “We’re very proud of the episodes.” The show is also going exactly as Snyder Urman always planned, and she’s embracing its approaching end with satisfaction. “I pitched the way it’s going to end when I pitched the show,” she said. “We’re on the path that was the story I felt like I wanted to tell, so it’s exciting, because we’re getting to that ending.”

Snyder Urman also said the final season of the show centered around the character of Jane Villanueva will likely air in March on Wednesday nights,...

Mishel Prada and Melissa Barrera in Vida (2018)
How ‘Vida’ and ‘One Day at a Time’ Make the Political Personal (Column)
Mishel Prada and Melissa Barrera in Vida (2018)
In the wake of gut-wrenching reports from the southern border, where families are being detained and separated, the casts and crew of Starz’s “Vida” and Netflix’s “One Day at a Time” pledged funds to immigration advocacy group Raices and challenged others to do the same for their #OneVidaataTime fundraising effort. More than a dozen shows have since followed suit, but it’s notable (and not altogether surprising) that it took shows “Vida” and “One Day at a Time” to kick off this urgent call to action within the entertainment industry in the first place. They, unlike the vast majority of television out there, have been doing the crucial work of humanizing Latinx stories all along. They, like their fundraising hashtag, have been showing how the political is so often personal, one life at a time.

“One Day at a Time” has tackled a range of issues surrounding immigration,...

‘Jane The Virgin,’ ‘One Day at a Time’ Document the Undocumented
Immigration and the thorny issues surrounding it have fueled countless back-and-forths on cable news shows, but the much-debated topic has also steadily found its way into the scripted realm, with viewers’ favorite fictional characters wrestling with problems including Ice raids, deportation and the plight of the Daca Dreamers.

The saga of Jane’s (Gina Rodriguez) secretly undocumented grandmother Alba’s (Ivonne Coll) bid to attain legal status on the CW’s “Jane The Virgin” has been a long-simmering plotline for several seasons, notably because the family’s Venezuelan heritage lent itself to organically exploring the topic, showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman says. In the show’s fourth season, Alba finally becomes a U.S. citizen.

“As things have progressed and administrations have changed, the urgency and the power of these stories have become just that much more amplified [and] it took on even more weight,” Urman explains.

She also admits they “got...

Reel Moms Get More Real: The Evolution of the Sitcom Mom (Column)
Pamela Adlon
With all due respect to my mother, I was raised by sitcom moms. A latchkey kid, I grew up in front of the television (small wonder I ended up with this job), and with my own mother working full-time, I soaked up the attention of Mrs. Brady, Mrs. Cunningham and Mrs. Cleaver as soon as I got home from school.

I was fascinated by the idea of a mother who would have milk and cookies waiting for me, or would braid my hair while helping me with my homework.

But that was a fantasy — and as I got older, I realized those moms I idealized were pretty much fantasies, too.

Thanks to the new golden age of TV, those perfect sitcom moms of the ’70s and ’80s have been banished in favor of a slew of more realistic on-screen mothers who are messy, flawed — and far more human. What a relief!

Jane the Virgin: Season Four Ratings
Last season, with Supergirl as its lead-in on Monday nights, the demo ratings for The CW's Jane the Virgin TV show only dropped a little more than five percent, and its total ratings grew a skosh. In its fourth season, it now follows the network's lowest rated TV series, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, on ratings-challenged Fridays. CW President Mark Pedowitz cited the satirical telenovela's critical acclaim when it was picked up for a fourth installment, but rumor has it the episode order has already been cut. Since this season will leave it with a good syndication package, will Jane the Virgin be cancelled or renewed for season five? Stay tuned. A CW comedy-drama Jane the Virgin stars Gina Rodriguez, Andrea Navedo, Yael Grobglas, Ivonne Coll, Jaime Camil, and Justin Baldoni. Although saving herself for marriage, Jane (Rodriguez) is accidentally impregnated via artificial insemination. Season four picks up...

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (2015)
‘Jane The Virgin, ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’, ‘iZombie’ To End After Upcoming Seasons
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (2015)
It’s official. The CW’s comedies Jane the Virgin and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend will end after their upcoming fifth and fourth seasons, respectively. Additionally, the network revealed this season that the upcoming fifth season of comedic drama iZombie also will be its last, making for string of farewells on the CW next season. It will start with Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which is on the fall schedule, and continue in midseason with Jane the Virgin and iZombie.

The announcement is not a surprise. Ahead of Jane the Virgin‘s fifth season renewal, star Gina Rodriguez had referred to a then-potential Season 5 as “our final season,” while Crazy Ex-Girlfriend star/co-creator Rachel Bloom tweeted after its pickup, “Just found out that #CrazyExGirlfriend has been renewed for a final season.”

Meanwhile, iZombie was probably the bubbliest of the CW established series and in danger of cancellation over its ratings performance but clinched a renewal...

‘Jane the Virgin’ Boss on Season 4 Finale: ‘I Knew It Would Be the Ultimate Surprise’
Justin Baldoni, Gina Rodriguez, and Brett Dier in Jane the Virgin (2014)
Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Chapter Eighty-One,” the season 4 finale of “Jane The Virgin.”

The fourth season finale of “Jane The Virgin” was supposed to be a time of celebration: Alba (Ivonne Coll) became an American citizen; Rafael (Justin Baldoni) planned to propose to Jane (Gina Rodriguez); Rogelio’s (Jaime Camil) American telenovela was back on track; Xo (Andrea Navedo) was fighting cancer; and the charges against Petra (Yael Grobglas) were dropped and she was in a happy relationship with J.R. (Rosario Dawson).

But show wouldn’t be living up to its true dramatic potential if things ended so easily — let alone so happily. So in a surprise twist, it was not only revealed that Petra actually was guilty of killing her twin sister, but also that Rafael was pulling away from Jane because Michael (Brett Dier) was still alive.

Or is he?...

Jane the Virgin: Season Five Renewal for CW TV Show
While her virginity may be long gone, Jane is coming back. The CW has renewed its Jane the Virgin TV show for a fifth season, despite low (and further declining) ratings. Nielsen households aside, the comedy-drama continues to garner critical acclaim, and season five will move it into the neighborhood of the favored 100-episode mark. A CW satirical telenovela, Jane the Virgin stars Gina Rodriguez, Andrea Navedo, Yael Grobglas, Ivonne Coll, Jaime Camil, and Justin Baldoni. Although saving herself for marriage, Jane's (Rodriguez) life was turned upside down when she got pregnant via accidental artificial insemination. The fourth season kicked off after a time jump, with Jane drawing upon her grief to write a book about her love story with the late Michael (Bret Dier). She and Rafael (Baldoni) are now close friends, and their mischievous son Mateo...
