Director. Actor. TikTok sensation. Martin Scorsese has done it all – and continues to do so, with several projects circling at the moment. But one we’ll get even sooner than his next planned feature – a crime drama set in Hawaii – is a five-part documentary about Scorsese himself titled, aptly enough, Mr. Scorsese.
The documentary – which turns the cameras on Martin Scorsese, who has been behind the lens for about six decades now – comes from Rebecca Miller and Apple TV+. While no official release date has been set, this will be one of the must-watch films for cinephiles everywhere.
As per Apple, “Mr. Scorsese is a film portrait of a man through the lens of his work, exploring the many facets of a visionary who redefined filmmaking, including his extraordinary career and unique personal history. With exclusive, unrestricted access to Scorsese’s private archives, the documentary series is anchored by extensive...

Martin Scorsese, the acclaimed filmmaker, producer, and writer, whose career spans more than 50 years, and is often celebrated for directing such classics as Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Casino, is about to have the cameras turned on him. Directed by Rebecca Miller, Mr Scorsese will explore the legendary director’s work through the years over the course of five episodes.
It’s mildly surprising that there hasn’t been a high-profile documentary on Martin Scorsese for such a long time (though 2004’s Scorsese On Scorsese is well worth checking out), but AppleTV+ is looking to fix that with Mr Scorsese. The documentary, presented in five episodes, will look at the director, writer and producer’s career through the years. Rebecca Miller is directing the project.
“I am so grateful to have been given the artistic freedom and access to create a cinematic portrait of one of our greatest living artists, Martin Scorsese,” director Miller commented on the project. “His work and life are so vast and so compelling that the piece evolved from one to five parts over a five year period; crafting this documentary alongside my long...

It is not surprising that "Columbo" is beloved as a detective show. Peter Falk's titular sleuth waltzes through the toughest cases with relentless precision, using his perceived ineptitude to disarm the slickest of criminals. When these criminals underestimate him and mistake his shrewdness for incompetence, it is incredibly satisfying to watch a smart, amicable fellow like Columbo have the last laugh. Moreover, it is a detective show like no other, taking an unconventional approach to how the mystery unfolds. Instead of operating like a whodunit, "Columbo" reveals the perpetrator in the first act and hinges its suspense on how Columbo gets to the heart of a case that appears unsolvable at first glance. "Just one more thing," Columbo muses, while poking every aspect of a case until the truth is revealed as plain as day.

The biopic has been a genre around since the early days of filmmaking, and over the course of more than 100 years, it has changed drastically with every passing decade. In the early 2000s the genre, in particular the musical biopic, hit somewhat of a snag. It got caught up in formulaic storytelling and became a parody of itself. So much so that the 2007 film Walk Hard made fun of the formula so much it ruined the genre forever. However, some films still missed the joke and went ahead and followed the formula anyway, such as 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody. The formula itself reduced the artist’s life to their Wikipedia page. Often opening with the film’s subject ready to take the stage of one of their famous performances,...

In a world where shows like Bridgerton serve romance with a side of pop songs and steamy stares, it’s easy to forget what true emotional depth looks like in period drama.
But back in 1993, Martin Scorsese gave us The Age of Innocence, a love story set in 1870s New York that feels more intense than anything we’re getting from today’s streaming hits.
It’s stylish, yes, (like c’mon it has to be the 1870s NY) but also sharp, quiet, and emotionally devastating. Where modern shows dress up drama in glitter, Scorsese gave us real heartbreak under the velvet and lace. And he did it all without breaking a sweat or a corset.
Why do modern period romances feel so empty next to this 1993 classic?
Netflix’s Bridgerton may look like the best chance of period drama romance on TV people will get these days, but it...

Deadpool & Wolverine opened with Wade Wilson pulling off some impressive dance moves to the tune of Nsync's "Bye Bye Bye." However, it wasn't Ryan Reynolds in the suit; instead, dancer Nick Pauley took on the role of the McU's "Dancepool."
During Sunday's 97th Academy Awards, host Conan O'Brien performed "I Won't Waste Time" and was accompanied on stage by Dune: Part Two's Sandworm and Deadpool & Wolverine's titular Merc with the Mouth.
The Marvel Studios movie didn't receive a single nomination - much to the chagrin of many comic book fans - but Deadpool's cameo felt like an acknowledgement of what a positive impact the threequel made to theaters in 2024.
Now, Pauley has taken to Instagram to confirm he once again donned the suit for the Oscars. He also credited Ryan Reynolds for advocating that he be the one who hit the stage as "Dancepool."

The Academy Awards took place yesterday evening and, as per usual, the results have split opinions. Anora was the surprise Best Picture winner, with Wicked and Conclave failing to keep the momentum going following other recent award ceremonies.
Conan O'Brien hosted this year's and his performance of "I Won't Waste Time" was accompanied by surprise appearances from Dune: Part Two's Sandworm and Deadpool & Wolverine's Dancepool.
We don't know who was in the suit, though the Merc with the Mouth - who O'Brien reminded us wasn't among the nominees - pulled off some familiar Backstreet Boys-inspired dance moves before making his exit.
Ryan Reynolds initially embarked on a pretty robust "FYC" campaign for Deadpool & Wolverine, though it quickly lost momentum. The movie, which was a box office hit, wasn't exactly considered a critical darling with 78% on Rotten Tomatoes.
You may recall that were was some chatter about Reynolds...

Anora picks up five Oscars, in a surprisingly mixed Oscars 2025. Here’s the run down of what won and what didn’t.
Well, the Oscars has happened again, and perhaps now we can all get back to normal for a while.
This year’s statuette season was interesting enough given that there was no clear frontrunner like last year, when Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer dominated the awards race from start to finish. Still, set against the backdrop of the the hugely destructive Californian wildfires, it still all seemed a little superfluous at times. Meanwhile, The Brutalist director Brady Corbet provided an insight into the state of the non-blockbuster film business when he revealed that not being paid for being on a months-long awards trail meant he was living hand to mouth.
Still, fancy garments were donned and some statuettes were duly dished out and the 2025 Oscars.

Hollywood’s biggest night has come to an end, and as usual, the Academy Awards delivered plenty of memorable moments.
But as much as we loved the James Bond tribute and the hilarious monologue from first-time host Conan O’Brien, the winners and their acceptance speeches were the focus of the night.
Several deserving stars took home their very first Oscars, including Mikey Madison, who headlined the biggest winner of the night, the audacious sex work dramedy Anora.

Conclave screenwriter Peter Straughan is now an Academy Award winner. The honor comes after Straughan picked up wins at the BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and Critics' Choice Awards.
At the Academy Awards on Sunday night, Straughan was announced as the winner for Best Adapted Screenplay. This is the second nomination for the writer, but the first time he has picked up the win. On the heels of BAFTA, Golden Globe and Critics Choice award wins, Peter Straughan has now won the Oscar for best adapted screenplay for Conclave. This is Straughan’s second Oscar nomination and first win.
Straughan thanked “our crew, our amazing cast, producers and Robin House Productions, Film Nation, Indian Paintbrush, Focus Features” and a special thank you to his daughter Connie, “This is for you.”
Directed by Edward Berger and written by Straughan, Conclave is based on the 2016 novel by Robert Harris, whom Straughan thanked “for your beautiful book.” Ralph Fiennes, Stanley Tucci, John Lithgow, Sergio Castellitto and Isabella Rossellini star in Conclave in which Cardinal Thomas Lawrence (Fiennes) is tasked with running this covert process after the unexpected death of the beloved Pope. Once the Catholic Church’s most powerful leaders have gathered from around the world and are locked together in the Vatican halls, Lawrence uncovers a...

The bumpy road to Oscar glory will reach its end Sunday night at the 97th Academy Awards, closing out one of the most unpredictable awards seasons in years. Ups and downs, twists and turns, mudslinging, mea culpas, tears both happy and sad — we’ve seen it all in recent weeks as the race kept us guessing what new upheaval might come next.
And that includes who wins tonight. “Emilia Pérez” might have the most nominations (13), but Jacques Audiard’s Spanish-language musical lost its frontrunner status pretty much the moment star Karla Sofía-Gascón’s history of bigoted tweets resurfaced. In stepped “Anora,” which won top prizes with both the PGA and DGA and seemed ready to sail to a Best Picture victory…until “Conclave” swept in and showed us that the race was much tighter than we’d thought.

Exclusive: The journey to bring Bob Dylan’s formative story to the screen took more than a decade. The film had a coterie of producers as it wound its way to production. Fred Berger and Alex Heineman got the PGA mark along with writer/director James Mangold. The other producers are Bob Bookman, Alan Gasmer, the film’s star Timothee Chalamet, Peter Jaysen, and Jeff Rosen. Here, Berger and Heineman explain the road to bring to screen the evolution of Dylan from the future from folk to rock icon. The Searchlight film tonight competes for eight Oscars including Best Picture.
Deadline: When Bob Dylan won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2016, he didn’t show up for the ceremony. What was the process in getting him to play ball here?
Fred Berger: Alex and I started talking about this movie in 2017 before either of our seven and a half year old kids were born.

The State of the Race
With the equivalent of a Best Picture win at the BAFTA Awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, in addition to the multiple Best Screenplay awards the film has received from awards bodies like the Golden Globes and USC Scripter Awards, “Conclave” and screenwriter Peter Straughan are most likely a lock to win the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Best Director gets more attention at the Oscars, but this millennium has shown the writing categories are potentially more important. In the past 15 years Argo (2012), Green Book (2018), and Coda (2021) won Best Picture without directing noms — but no film since Titanic (1997) has won without a writing nom. That could be good news for many of this year's nominees for Best Adapted Screenplay. Four of the five are also up for the top prize. Here is our breakdown of the race as it stands today.

James Mangold, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, is — and for 30 years has been — one of the most dependable filmmakers in Hollywood, always good for an entertaining and solid, if not showy, film, featuring great performances, regardless of genre.
Indeed, Mangold has directed dramas (Heavy and Girl, Interrupted), biopics (Walk the Line), westerns (3:10 to Yuma), crime/thrillers (Cop Land), action movies (Ford v Ferrari), rom-coms (Kate & Leopold), action/comedies (Knight and Day), mystery/horror films (Identity) and franchise films (The Wolverine, Logan and Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny). But because he does little to call attention to himself as the auteur of a film, he has, for much of his career, been overlooked, in terms of conversations about top filmmakers and awards.

Timothee Chalamet on making ‘A Complete Unknown’: “I don’t know if I have a lot more of these in me”
Timothée Chalamet says he does not know if he will do many more films that require the investment that Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown has done.

James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown is getting its German premiere at the Berlin Film Festival on Friday night, and its Oscar-nominated star Timothée Chalamet is in town to present the film.
Speaking during the movie’s press conference earlier in the day, Chalamet was asked multiple times by the audience what he took from Bob Dylan’s subtle lyrical activism and his ability to separate his art and public persona from becoming overwhelmed by personal political stances.
Chalamet drew comparisons between Dylan’s subtle political messages and those of Dune writer Frank Herbert: “Be wary of cult-like figures,” would be his takeaway from both men, he said, adding that that is a sensible philosophy.
“I won’t speak for him [Bob Dylan] because he’s alive and well in Malibu, but my interpretation is just be wary of any savior-like figures,” Chalamet said.

The Sundance Film Festival chose well in selecting the honorees for tonight’s Gala fundraiser at the newly opened Grand Hyatt Deer Valley.
Beyond freshly minted Oscar nominees Cynthia Erivo and James Mangold in the house to receive the Visionary Award and Trailblazer Award respectively, it was Michelle Satter — the Founding Senior Director of Artists Program for the Sundance Institute — whose stirring speech unified the high-profile packed ballroom.
Satter was recognized for her decades-long commitment to nurturing artists and cultivating independent film through the Sundance Labs. As many in the room knew and as Satter mentioned, she and her husband David Latt were among the thousands who lost their homes in the wildfires that scorched LA. Horribly, this tragedy came after Satter and Latt’s youngest son Michael, an advocate in the industry for social justice, was fatally shot in November 2023 at his Miracle Mile home in a senseless murder.

Horribly, this tragedy came after Satter and Latt’s youngest son Michael, an advocate in the industry for social justice, was fatally shot in November 2023 at his Miracle Mile home in a senseless murder.

For James Mangold, Thursday morning was like any other, aside from the fact he woke up to three Academy Award nominations for his Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown — for Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay (shared with cowriter Jay Cocks) and Best Picture. All things considered, not too shabby. And while the showing was hardly shocking, the filmmaker tells Gold Derby, “I’ve been doing this a long time, and you learn very well not to expect anything. Just be open and let it happen. Obviously the results are thrilling.”
The veteran director had two previous Oscar bids, for adapted screenplay in 2018 (Logan) and picture in 2020 (Ford v Ferrari). There has been some backlash against the Searchlight Pictures feature for allegedly taking of liberties with Dylan’s story by condensing timelines, conjoining separate incidents, and fictionalizing key elements. Even so, Mangold doesn’t see the movie’s eight nominations as...

On Thursday morning, James Mangold was celebrating eight Oscar nominations for his film A Complete Unknown. He watched the announcement at 5.30am L.A. time on his cellphone “with one bar of data” because he was without power due to the L.A. fires. “We were evacuated a couple weeks ago,” he said. “Our house is fine, but we have been without power and even gas for extended periods.”
Mangold, who directed and co-wrote the Bob Dylan biopic with Jay Cocks, spoke to Deadline while sitting in traffic on the 101 freeway after taking his children to school. He had spent the early morning texting with his cast and was “thrilled” at the announcement, he said. “[Timothée Chalamet] is in rehearsals for Saturday Night Live. We’re all in separate parts of the world, but we’re all ecstatic.” (Chalamet is set to host and perform as a musical guest on...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has unveiled the nominations for the 97th Academy Awards (Oscars), set to honour the outstanding films of 2024. Originally delayed due to the Los Angeles wildfires, the announcement was made on January 23, from the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
Brady Corbet’s ‘The Brutalist’ leads the pack with multiple nominations, lauded for its ambitious narrative chronicling the life of an immigrant architect in mid-20th-century America.
The Best Actress category has drawn significant attention, with Demi Moore (The Substance) and Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez) leading the conversation. One of the most open-wide races in years is coming into focus. “Emilia Pérez” led all nominees for the 97th Academy Awards with 13, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. Its haul sets a new record for a film not in English. “The Brutalist” and “Wicked” tied for second place with 10 each, both also receiving nods for picture. Brady Corbet was also nominated for directing and Adrien Brody scored a lead actor nom, his first since winning for “The Piano” in 2003.
More major milestones: “Conclave” supporting actress Isabella Rossellini earned her first nomination, 46 years after her mother Ingrid Bergman’s final nom. Demi Moore also earned her first nomination, for her lead performance in Coralie Fargeat’s body-horror film “The Substance.” Fargeat became the ninth woman to ever be nominated for directing, following her fellow Frenchwoman Justine Triet (“Anatomy of a Fall”) last year. The screenplays for “A Complete Unknown,” “Conclave,” “Nickel Boys,” “Sing Sing” and “The Wild Robot,” and the original works on which they were based, have been chosen as finalists for the USC Libraries Scripter Awards, the USC Libraries announced on Wednesday.
The Scripters have been given out since 1988 and are awarded to the writers of adapted screenplays and the authors of the works that were adapted. The unusual decision to reward original authors means that “A Complete Unknown” writers James Mangold and Jay Cocks share their nomination with Elijah Wald, who wrote the book “Dylan Goes Electric!”; “Conclave” screenwriter Peter Straughan is joined as a nominee by novelist Robert Harris; “Nickel Boys” writers RaMell Ross and Joslyn Barnes are nominated alongside author Colson Whitehead; “Sing Sing” writers Clint Bentley, Greg Kwedar, Clarence Maclin and John “Divine G” Whitfield are nominated with Esquire magazine journalist John H.
