She joined Alcoholics Anonymous in 1970 and helped counsel other alcoholics on how to reclaim their lives. Every Thursday she worked as a volunteer answering the phone for the Alcoholism Council of Greater Los Angeles, where she later became a board member in the organization.

Created the lead role of "Julie Jordan" in the original Broadway production of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II's "Carousel", opposite John Raitt's "Billy Bigelow", in 1945.

She got to christen a Goodyear blimp, the "Volunteer VI", because of her role in This Man's Navy (1945), a movie about Navy blimps.

Best-known for her role as Tommy Rettig's mother, "Ellen Miller", in the early installments of the popular TV series, Lassie (1954) (1954-1957).

Drove a Rolls Royce in her later years with the personalized license plates that read "Jan Who".

Appeared in several films with her ex-husband, Russell Hayden before they were married. They included In Old Mexico (1938) and Ombre sur la piste (1938).

Jan Clayton helped create the "Jan Clayton Center for Alcohol and Drug Recovery" which opened in 1978 and provides long-term residential treatment for individuals with alcohol and drug related problems.

Was spokesperson for the "Schick" stop smoking/weight loss program in the 1970s.
