23 Years Later, This Explosive Tom Clancy Thriller Is Blowing Up the Streaming Charts
Image
As geopolitical tensions rise across the globe, Netflix viewers are turning to a Tom Clancy political thriller. The Sum of All Fears, the 2002 adaptation of Clancy's 1991 novel about a terrorist attack on American soil, has risen to #10 on the Netflix streaming charts. The film features Ben Affleck as the third big-screen portrayer of Clancy's analyst-turned-action man, Jack Ryan. Ryan had already been featured in three films: in the first, The Hunt for Red October, he was played by Alec Baldwin, while in the subsequent two films, Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger, he was portrayed by Harrison Ford.

Although all three films were solid box-office hits, the series was rebooted to feature a younger leading man in the form of Affleck; likewise, the book's plotline was altered to make the grizzled veteran Ryan into a wet-behind-the-ears rookie, confronted with an unimaginable crisis on his first week on the job as a CIA analyst.

Before John Wick, Keanu Reeves Turned Down What Could Have Been A Major Action Franchise
Image
Something about the names "John" and "Jack" apparently screams unstoppable action hero. John Wick, Jack Ryan, Jack Reacher ... these are some of the biggest action heroes of the last few years. Extend that timeframe a little and you've got John McClane and Jack Bauer. Go even further and you've got John James Rambo, and that's to say nothing of Jason Bourne and James Bond, who feel very much "John" and "Jack"-adjacent.

Paramount and Skydance tried to throw yet another John into the mix with "Without Remorse," a 2021 action thriller that starred Michael B. Jordan as U.S. Navy Seal John Clark — or John Kelly, as he's known in the film. Born in the pages of military fiction novels by Tom Clancy, Clark shared his origin with Jack Ryan, a character who has been portrayed on screen by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, Chris Pine, and John Krasinski across five films and a streaming series.

Tom Clancy and Netflix's 'Splinter Cell' Series Finally Gets Important Release Update
Image
This year, viewers can enter the world of Tom Clancy in a way they never have before. The first-ever animated series based on the late military thriller writer's work, Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, is coming to Netflix. While updating the rest of their animation slate, the streamer has announced that the series will premiere this fall. The series is based on Ubisoft's Splinter Cell video game franchise, which began in 2002 and centers around Fourth Echelon, a fictitious black-ops division of the National Security Agency. Led by Sam Fisher, Fourth Echelon is an elite strike team that emphasizes stealth above all else.

The original Splinter Cell game is considered one of the greatest video games of all time, and has been followed by a number of sequels and tie-in novels. A film adaptation was in the works for many years: Tom Hardy was cast as Fisher, while Doug Liman was attached to direct,...

"He's Clearly Trained That A Lot": Michael B. Jordan's Fighting Combat In Overlooked Tom Clancy Action Thriller Gets High Score From Navy Seal
Image
Michael B. Jordan took on a role in the Tom Clancy movieWithout Remorse that has mostly gone overlooked, but according to a former Navy Seal, it includes some very realistic fighting scenes. Clancy is best known for writing the Jack Ryan books that ended up being made into movies, starting with The Hunt for Red October. The Jordan movie, Without Remorse, exists in that world.

Without Remorse follows the Jack Ryan supporting character John Kelly (also known as John Clark). In previous movies, Willem Dafoe (Clear and Present Danger) and Liev Schreiber (The Sum of All Fears) portrayed the character, a black ops soldier who will get his hands dirty, so Jack Ryan doesn't have to. However, the Without Remorse novel is mostly an origin story for the character, as he seeks revenge for his wife's murder.

DJ Shipley reacts to Without Remorse and praises Jordan's performance. He gives it...

'The Sum of All Fears' with Ben Affleck is Rising on the Netflix Charts
Image
Paramount's Jack Ryan reboot movie, The Sum of All Fears, is climbing the Netflix charts and currently sits at number four. The film was meant to relaunch the Ryanverse with a younger cast, and featured Ben Affleck as the famous CIA analyst. The cast was stacked, with Morgan Freeman as Dci William Cabot, James Cromwell as President Fowler, Phillip Baker Hall as Defense Secretary Becker, and Liev Schrieber as fan-favorite John Clark.

Phil Alden Robinson (The Field of Dreams) directed The Sum of All Fears, and it opened on May 31, 2002, not long after 9/11. The film follows Ryan as he tries to stop nuclear war from breaking out between the United States and Russia, following a nuclear bomb going off in Baltimore. The villains are re-worked into Austrian neo-Nazis who want war to happen so they can create a new fascist state in Europe.

Michael B. Jordan has selected his sophomore directorial effort, opting to helm a reimagining of “The Thomas Crown Affair.” Jordan had already been reported to be starring in the Amazon MGM Studios production back in 2016.

“Thomas Crown Affair” will get a worldwide theatrical release. Jordan is producing via his Outlier Society banner alongside Elizabeth Raposo. Plot details are under wraps, but Jordan will direct from a script by Drew Pearce. A previous draft was written by Wes Tooke and Justin Britt-Gibson, which was based on the original 1968 film starring Steve McQueen.

Patrick McCormick and Marc Toberoff will also serve as producers on “Thomas Crown Affair.” Alan Trustman, writer of the 1968 film, is an executive producer. This new movie is the third version of the classic romantic heist story, after the 1999 remake starring Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo.

Monster Mash: ‘Danza Macabra Vol. Three: The Spanish Gothic Collection’ from Severin Films
Image
With the third installment of their Danza Macabra series, the fine, twisted folks at Severin Films shift focus from the boot of Italy to the Iberian peninsula. This collection spotlights four fascinating Spanish examples of the sort of moody gothic filmmaking that Italian directors like Mario Bava and Antonio Margheriti, not to mention Hammer Films in Britain, helped to popularize for international markets.

Rife with reptilian monsters, vampires, zombified Knights Templar, and even a cameo from Frankenstein and his misbegotten creation, these films vary considerably in tone and approach, ranging from rambling shaggy-dog tales to almost esoteric fables. They also differ in how far they’re willing to go with their respective lashings of sex and violence, growing bolder as the restrictions of the Franco regime lifted after the dictator’s passing in 1975.

Writer-director Miguel Madrid’s schizoid Necrophagous, from 1971, divides its time between two principal storylines that barely cohere in the end.

Jack Ryan should rely on his intelligence and espionage skills rather than becoming a generic action hero. What Happens To Mike November After Jack Ryan Season 4?
Image
Warning: The following article contains spoilers from the series finale of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan. Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan has come to an end following four seasons on Amazon Prime Video, meaning that fans have to say goodbye to characters like Mike November, played by Michael Kelly. November first appeared in the Amazon series in season 2 as the Central Intelligence Agency station chief in Venezuela, aka, Jack Ryan's boss. He and John Krasinski's Jack Ryan didn't always see eye-to-eye and constantly butted heads, but at the end of the day, November and Ryan always had mutual trust.

During the series finale of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, November, who had been shot by a sniper at the end of episode 5, worked with Michael Peña's Domingo Chavez to save Ryan from the clutches of Bill Tuttle's men in Shan State, Myanmar. Ryan was kidnapped, meaning the show had...

John Krasinski Outshines His Predecessors as Jack Ryan According to Co-Star
Image
John Krasinski has been praised by co-star Michael Kelly as the best actor to have ever portrayed the iconic character. Krasinski is known for his role as Jack Ryan in Prime Video’s Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan. Kelly expressed this opinion in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He played the role of former CIA Station Chief Mike November in the Krasinski-led Jack Ryan series.

Prior to Krasinski, the role of Jack Ryan has been played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, and Chris Pine. Jack Ryan is originally a character penned by acclaimed author Tom Clancy for his 1984 novel The Hunt For Red October.

Kelly elucidated on why he believes Krasinski's Jack Ryan stands apart from earlier renditions of the character in cinema. He claimed that Krasinski's portrayal was superior because he was successful in blending the character's humanity and humor with the demanding action scenes of the show.

Why John Krasinski Is The Best Jack Ryan Out Of 5 Actors, According To November Star
Image
Michael Kelly, the actor who brought former CIA Station Chief Mike November to life in Prime Video’s Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, has explained why John Krasinski is the best actor to ever assume the role. A former U.S. Marine-turned-cia analyst, Ryan was first created by best-selling author Tom Clancy for his 1984 novel The Hunt For Red October and would go on to feature in a slew of books and movie adaptations. Before Krasinski took up the mantle in 2018, the character had previously been played by Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, and Chris Pine.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Kelly was asked about what he thought separated Krasinski's Jack Ryan from the previous big-screen adaptations of the character. Declaring Krasinski's version the “best Jack Ryan we have ever seen”, Kelly suggested that not only was his co-star able to combine the humanity and humor of the character...

One Jack Ryan Character Needs To Be In Michael Pena’s Rainbow Six Spinoff
Image
Warning: Spoilers ahead for Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan season 4!Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan season 4 might be the final series, but fan favorite Mike November really needs to carry over to Michael Pena’s planned Rainbow Six spinoff. Outside of CIA analyst Jack Ryan himself, the Tom Clancy novels he sprang from created quite a few memorable characters, including Rainbow commander John Clark - played by Michael B. Jordan in 2021's Without Remorse - or Jim Greer. The latter is played by Wendell Pierce on Amazon's Jack Ryan, while Clark is notable by his absence.

Surprisingly, one of the best characters in Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan has no actual basis in the author's work. Mike November (Michael Kelly) was introduced during Jack Ryan season 2 and quickly became an audience favorite. This is largely down to the charisma of Kelly as a performer (who has regularly stolen scenes in everything from 2004's...

John Krasinski's Jack Ryan Is the Best Version of the Character
Image
Tom Clancy’s literary hero Jack Ryan has been one of the most popular protagonists in modern espionage fiction. Before his tragic death in 2013, Clancy wrote over a dozen novels in the core series and the larger “Ryanverse” that he created. While heroes like John Clark and Domingo Chavez had their fans, none of Clancy’s other protagonists found the same enthusiasm from readers. Ryan is both an expert and an everyman; he’s a relatable hero whose skills come from training, not destiny. The best stories within the Ryanverse are those where Ryan sees the promise of his country, but refuses to ignore its faults. There’s a complexity to his patriotism that is unique.

‘Jack Ryan’ Season 4 Review: John Krasinski Cements His Legacy as Tom Clancy’s Legendary Action Hero
Image
It’s not easy being Jack Ryan. Sure, there are the upsides to being a highly placed CIA operative and getting to jetset around the world to all kinds of exotic locales, but there’s also a whole lot of frantic running, jumping, dodging bullets and withstanding torture. As such, this week’s arrival of the fourth and final season of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” on Prime Video marks just another day on the job for the titular spy. And boy, is it great to have him back — even if only to say goodbye.

This final batch of six episodes arrives on the heels of Season 3 last December, and things haven’t slowed down. Having cleared his name after finding himself implicated in a global conspiracy last time, Jack (John Krasinski) is now acting deputy director of the CIA, biding his time while acting director Elizabeth Wright (Betty Gabriel) awaits her Senate confirmation.

This Jack Ryan Adaptation Gave Us a Very Different Ben Affleck
Image
The Jack Ryan franchise had big shoes to fill after Alec Baldwin and Harrison Ford successfully portrayed Tom Clancy’s fictional CIA analyst in The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, and Clear and Present Danger respectively. But in 2002, Ben Affleck gave it a go with the reboot The Sum of All Fears, focusing on a younger version of Ryan desperately trying to stop a nuclear bomb from going off on U.S. soil. Director Phil Alden Robinson guides this entertaining adult-oriented thriller (a genre Affleck has thrived in throughout his career) with confidence, letting actors like Morgan Freeman, James Cromwell and Liev Schreiber (who kicks serious ass as the American spy John Clark) do a lot of the heavy lifting. The filmmaker also makes sure to stage the set pieces with the appropriate amount of tension and clarity, keeping the stakes high throughout. However, it’s Affleck who brings...

All 6 Tom Clancy Movies Ranked, From ‘The Hunt for Red October’ to ‘Without Remorse’ (Photos)
Tom Clancy
Hollywood has been adapting Tom Clancy’s techno-thrillers for three decades-plus — with a handful of familiar faces playing the famous character of Jack Ryan, from Alec Baldwin to Ben Affleck. But how have critics on RottenTomatoes.com rated these adaptations?

“The Hunt for Red October” (1990)

Tomatometer: 89%

Tom Clancy’s first big-screen outing pitted CIA agent Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin) against a mysterious Russian sub commander played by Sean Connery. As the L.A. “Clear and Present Danger” (1994)

Tomatometer: 80%

In his second outing as Jack Ryan, Harrison Ford chases down a rogue CIA agent and a drug cartel. The New York Times’ Janet Maslin praises “another fast, gripping spy story with some good tricks up its sleeve,...

The Dwelling: Michael B. Jordan to produce and maybe star in thriller
Image
Written by Aaron Jayh, the short thriller story The Dwelling has never been published – but that’s not stopping it from serving as the basis of a film that has Prisoners and Raised by Wolves writer Aaron Guzikowski writing the screenplay, with Michael B. Jordan and Liz Raposo’s company Outlier Society attached to produce. Jordan is also considering starring in the film. Deadline reports that Amazon Studios came out the winner in a bidding war over the project, paying an amount somewhere in the high six figures. Ground Control’s Scott Glassgold will also be producing the film with Jordan and Raposo.

Deadline notes that “Several studios bid and put together talent alignments, but it came down to Amazon and Netflix.” And Amazon won.

The Dwelling will tell the story of a newly divorced father who discovers a house buried in his backyard. He is a former all pro...

Mike November’s Name In Jack Ryan Is More Clever Than You Think
Image
Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan character Mike November’s name has a clever meaning that hints at something more. The Amazon Prime series introduces Mike November (Michael Kelly) in season 2 as a valuable aid to Jack Ryan (John Krasinski). Although the character is not a Tom Clancy original, Mike November may be inspired by another one of Jack Ryan's allies. As is the case with many elements of the espionage genre, there’s more than meets the eye to Mike November.

Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan season 2 follows the titular character on a mission to Venezuela, where he becomes embroiled in political warfare while investigating an international arms deal. Recurring character Mike November works as a CIA field officer stationed in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas who assists Jack Ryan on his mission. Mike November becomes a valuable ally for Ryan throughout seasons 2 and 3 - though the clever meaning behind Mike...

"I lay there in the pouring rain. I could feel a pain in my chest, right where my pacemaker is installed from my heart attack two years ago - and then I passed out."

Clark has had no contact with Ben, Kelly and Annabel for eight years after it emerged he had an affair with Redgrave's personal assistant, Nicolette Hannah.

Lynn Redgrave in Appelez-moi Docteur (1978)
Lynn Redgrave obituary
Lynn Redgrave in Appelez-moi Docteur (1978)
Even by the colourful standards of her own family's public profile and professional achievements, Lynn Redgrave, who has died of breast cancer aged 67, was an exceptional personality. Her death seems particularly cruel after the loss of both her niece, Natasha Richardson, after a skiing accident last year, and her brother, Corin Redgrave, last month. The third child of the actors Michael Redgrave and Rachel Kempson, Lynn was a gifted comedian who received her first Oscar nomination for a delightful, clownish performance in the title role of Georgy Girl (1966), one of the defining movies of the so-called swinging 60s. She went on to spend many years living and working in America. Less politically engaged than her older siblings, Vanessa and Corin, she was no less a remarkable talent.

Her 1991 television remake of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? with...

Lynn Redgrave in Appelez-moi Docteur (1978)
Lynn Redgrave Dead At 67
Lynn Redgrave in Appelez-moi Docteur (1978)
The acting world's Redgrave family has been hit by another tragedy - Lynn Redgrave has died, aged 67.

The Oscar-nominated Georgy Girl star's death comes 14 months after her niece Natasha Richardson lost her life following a skiing accident and a month after brother Corin Redgrave passed away.

Redgrave died on Sunday night at her home in New York.

Recent tabloid reports suggested the revered British thespian was losing her seven-year battle with breast cancer and shocked friends when she arrived at brother Corin's funeral in London in a wheelchair.

One bystander said, "She looks like she only has weeks to live."

Redgrave underwent a mastectomy and chemotherapy treatments in her adopted New York in 2003.

Lynn Redgrave began her acting career in the early 1960s with theatre roles in William Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Billy Liar and The Tulip Tree and quickly became movie star too, appearing in Tom Jones and Georgy Girl, for which she earned Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations.

She fell in love with New York when she made her Broadway debut in Black Comedy in 1967, and later moved there and became a U.S. citizen.

The actress joined sister Vanessa and brother Corin as part of Britain's most beloved theatrical families, appearing in a number of Broadway and West End hits.

But she'll also be remembered for movies like Shine and Gods & Monsters, for which she received another Academy Award nomination, in the late 1990s.

Redgrave was awarded an OBE (Officer of the Order of British Empire) in the 2002 Queen's New Years Honours List for her services to drama.

She was also a published author - her Journal: A Mother and Daughter's Recovery from Breast Cancer, which was co-written by her daughter Annabel Clark, became a labour of love after Redgrave was diagnosed with cancer in 2003.

The actress wed actor and director John Clark in 1967. The couple had three children, Benjamin, Kelly and Annabel, before divorcing in December 2000.

Lynn Redgrave Dies at Age 67
Lynn Redgrave in Appelez-moi Docteur (1978)
Lynn Redgrave, a vital and popular member of Britain's Redgrave dynasty, died Sunday night. She was 67 and had waged a lengthy battle with breast cancer. Speaking on behalf of her children - Ben, Pema and Annabel, who were with her - Redgrave's publicist Rick Miramontez, confirmed to The Associated Press that Redgrave died peacefully at her home in Connecticut. Launching upon the scene in the early '60s, at the same time her elder (and more flamboyant) sister Vanessa Redgrave made a splash, Lynn Redgrave earned an Oscar nomination for her turn as a gawky Bridget Jones prototype in 1966's Georgy Girl. She received another nomination for her supporting role as the stunned housekeeper in 1998's Gods and Monsters. Redgrave, born in London to thespians Rachel Kemspon and Michael Redgrave, made her stage debut in 1962 at the Royal Court Theatre in London. Her movie fame brought her across the Atlantic, and she played on stage and on TV in both Hollywood and New York. She was also the first of many celebrities who served as the spokesperson for the Weight Watchers program. In 1967, she married actor-director John Clark, and they had three children. The marriage ended in divorce in 2000. Only last month, on April 6, Redgrave's elder brother, actor Corin Redgrave, died at 70 at his home in London. No cause of death was reported, but Corin Redgrave had several health setbacks in recent years, including a heart attack in 2005. Last year, Lynn's niece (and Vanessa's daughter), actress Natasha Richardson, died from head injuries sustained during a ski accident. "Our beloved mother Lynn Rachel passed away peacefully after a seven year journey with breast cancer," her family said in a statement Monday. "She lived, loved and worked harder than ever before. The endless memories she created as a mother, grandmother, writer, actor and friend will sustain us for the rest of our lives. Our entire family asks for privacy through this difficult time."...
