The Only Main Actors Still Alive From The Virginian
Image
After "Gunsmoke" paved the way for adult westerns on television, the floodgates opened up with every network trying to ride the success wave with oaters of their own like "Rawhide," "Bonanza," and "Wagon Train." Chief among them was "The Virginian," which holds the honor of being the third longest-running network western of all time. The NBC series ran for nine seasons and 249 episodes from 1962 to 1971. The distinction it holds over most of its cowboy television counterparts is that it was the first 90-minute Western series, with episodes running for 75 minutes plus commercials.

Loosely based on Owen Wister's 1902 novel "The Virginian: A Horseman of the Plains," "The Virginian" had been adapted four times into feature films, with the version starring Gary Cooper considered among his best movies. Almost three decades later, James Drury performed a test drive for the character in a 1958 episode of the half-hour anthology series "Decision." Considerable...

Sundance: John Carney’s Musical Drama ‘Flora and Son’ Sells to Apple in 20M Deal
Image
A day after Fair Play sold to Netflix in a Sundance deal pegged in the 20 million range, another 20 million deal has come together at the annual film festival. Apple has picked up the worldwide rights to Flora and Son, John Carney’s musical ode to motherhood that features a breakthrough performance by Eve Hewson. Multiple sources say the deal landed at just over 20 million. (Although one source says comes in at just under 20 million.)

The feel-good charmer, steeped in Irish humor and flavor, premiered Sunday in front of an audience that was laughing, cheering and wiping away tears, all culminating with a standing ovation. Hewson anchors Flora, playing a single mother juggling work and a challenging co-parenting relationship with her ex. In the Dublin-set feature about how music can re-energize life, she connects with her troubled teenaged son (Orén Kinlan) through a discarded guitar and also forms a bond with her online music teacher,...

John Carney in Once (2006)
‘Flora and Son’ Review: John Carney’s Latest Film Plays Like Too Much of a Good Thing
John Carney in Once (2006)
You know where you are with John Carney — and where you are is a guitar shop in a shabby Dublin back street. Ever since the writer-director broke through with 2007’s buskers-in-love hit, “Once,” he has stuck to small-scale, big-hearted romantic comedy-dramas about aspiring rock and pop musicians.

He has put enough diegetic songs in all of his films for them to count as musicals. And he has restricted himself to untouristy parts of Dublin — most of the time, anyway. “Begin Again,” starring Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo, took him to New York, but he was back in Ireland for “Sing Street” in 2016, and he returns once again for the likable “Flora and Son.”

The title notwithstanding, his new yarn isn’t really about Flora and her son, but about Flora and everyone in her life. Played by Eve Hewson (“The Knick”), Flora stomps through Dublin with a high ponytail and a low-cut top.

‘Flora and Son’ Review: Eve Hewson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt Make Music Together in John Carney’s Latest Irish Charmer
Image
Few filmmakers romanticize music — its magical ability to move and transform us — more than John Carney. His breakthrough hit, Once (2007), which follows an Irish busker with a guitar and a Czech pianist in Dublin, won over audiences, got an Academy Award for Best Song and inspired a Broadway musical. Flora and Son isn’t a remake, but Carney certainly borrows his earlier film’s tropes, from the hardscrabble lives of his characters to the story that includes their attempt to write a song together, and a plot in which romance and making music are inseparable. But why not borrow and tweak a formula so winning?

Flora and Son has the great advantage of Eve Hewson as Flora, the young mother of a 14-year-old boy, Max (a very natural Oren Kinlan), whose petty theft threatens to land him in juvenile detention. As she does in the recent series Bad Sisters, Hewson...

Best Original Score Winners in the 21st Century: Do they Influence The Best Picture Race?
By Mark Pinkert

Contributor

…

When I began research for this post, I assumed there would be a noticeable correlation between Academy Award Best Picture winners and Best Original Score winners. A safe assumption, I thought, because of how important music is to cinema (have you ever watched a scene before music was added?). Music provides emotional thrust to a film. It creates suspense, amplifies poignant moments, and brings settings to life. Additionally, music can shape our memory of a given film. How many iconic movies—The Godfather (1972), Star Wars (1977), Jaws (1975), Psycho (1960)—have themes that we automatically recall as soon as the movie’s title comes up?

Yet in the thirteen Academy Awards since and including 2000, only three Best Picture winners also took home Best Original Score and of the eighty-five films that were nominated for Best Picture in this time period, only about one third of them were even nominated for Best Original Score.

Alicia Keys
Music Review: Alicia Keys 'Girl On Fire'
Alicia Keys
New York — Alicia Keys will make you cry. Cry hard.

That's what happened when a close friend listened to the song "Brand New Me," a personal piano-tune from Keys' new album that she calls her "autobiography." On it, she sings about being herself, even if others don't approve.

"When I looked up from playing it, she was crying and she was like, `Why didn't you warn me?' It caught her off-guard," Keys recalled in an interview. "There's something about a time in your life that we all go through – if you haven't gone through it you will – that you find you're going to rise above something that's kind of held you back and you find this thing inside of you that really says, `I'm new now.'"

Keys' life has changed tremendously since she recorded "The Element of Freedom" three years ago. She's now a mother and Broadway producer,...

Hillsong – Australia’s most powerful brand
Hillsong is a multi-million dollar global brand with a massive following, particularly among the young. What can marketers learn from this fast-growing faith factory as it turns 30, asks Robin Hicks.

Say what you like about Hillsong. The happy-clappy megachurch does not enjoy a Godly reputation in all quarters, and gets a kicking in the comment thread on Mumbrella whenever we write a story about Gloria Jean’s, the coffee chain it supposedly has ties with (which Hillsong denies – see below).

It’s also been on the receiving end of some bad press for a lack of transparency over its finances, sordid goings-on that led founder Brian Houston’s father to depart, a book by a former Hillsonger that called it ‘toxic Christianity’, and allegations of vote stacking in Australian Idol.

But Hillsong is one of Australia’s few global brands. It is one of the most powerful Australian youth brands.

Flaming Lips Playing For Crazy Record
Wayne Coyne in Christmas on Mars (2008)
Nashville, Tenn. -- Fun for Wayne Coyne of The Flaming Lips means collaboration, and a recent dust-up with Erykah Badu after they worked together isn't slowing him down.

Coyne and the Lips will launch an attempt at the Guiness World Records mark for most live shows in 24 hours, playing eight concerts between Memphis, Tenn., and New Orleans on Wednesday and Thursday. Trailed by fans along the way, they'll meet up with acts like Jackson Browne, Grace Potter & The Nocturnals, Gary Clarke Jr. and Hunter Hayes as part of the activities surrounding MTV's O Music Awards.

The Oklahoma rockers have been finalizing details and juggling schedules and logistics as they chase Jay-z's record of seven shows in a day.

"If you had to really consider all this in the beginning, you just simply wouldn't want to do it," Coyne said in a phone interview last week. "Luckily, it occurs to you...

Was the Grey's Anatomy Finale Believable?
You obviously remember that on the May 20 Grey's Anatomy season finale, a madman with a gun and a grudge walked in and went on a shooting spree at Seattle Grace Mercy West.

It made for gripping TV, but one thing some critics have pointed out is the perceived lack of believability - would anyone off the street really be able to roam freely as Gary Clark did?

TV Guide explored this very subject yesterday, and according to Dr. Glenn P. Kelley, cardiologist at East Jefferson General Hospital in Metairie, La., it's both very possible and unlikely.

"Patient room doors do not lock," he says, "so doctors can get to them if we need to."

On the flip side, "supply rooms, pharmacy rooms, and rooms with sensitive/expensive equipment and call rooms all definitely do lock." Oh, and there are entire wards that do as well.

Maternity and psychiatry, for example,...

[TV] The Virginian: The Complete First Season
At one time, Westerns were the most popular genre of television program. There were as many westerns on TV in the fifties and sixties as there are reality shows today. One of the longest running and most popular of these was The Virginian. It was among the first of the “Adult Westerns” (meaning it wasn’t the stereotypical white hat vs. the black hat shoot-em-up) and was the first 90-minute show of the Western genre.

The series starred James Drury as the unnamed hero, perpetually known only as “the Virginian”. It’s never made clear (at least, not in the first season) why the Virginian left his home to travel to Wyoming or why he never reveals his true name but no one in the series seems bothered by his secretive nature. Drury is one of the more laid back western heroes. He isn’t in the larger-than-life John Wayne mold.

The Virginian: TV Show Cast of Classic Western Reuniting
Though it isn't remembered by many TV viewers today, The Virginian TV show was one of the most popular Westerns in its day. The NBC series ran for eight seasons, from 1962 until 1970. The characters returned in the 1970-71 season in a different format and the show was renamed The Men from Shiloh.

The Virginian series follows the adventures of a strong-willed man known only as the "Virginian" (James Drury) who works to maintain order on the Shiloh Ranch in Wyoming. Other regular actors during the run of the series include Doug McClure, Lee J. Cobb, John McIntire, Charles Bickford, Stewart Granger, Clu Gulager, Gary Clarke, Randy Boone, and Roberta Shore.

It's often been remarked that The Virginian had such high production values that each episode looked like a feature film. The 249 installments are 90 minutes apiece and were all shot...
