Quotes

  • Hee Haw (1969) may have set me back, but it sure set me up.
  • [on good friend and fellow C&W impresario Jimmy Dean] First he begged me to join his band, the Texas Wildcats, and then threw me out for never getting anywhere on time. Eight years later, he nearly had me ejected from the set of his TV series for talking too much. Despite everything, I'm only too proud to say that we were like brothers until the day he died.
  • We played for the princess of Monaco. It was her 21st birthday and we were in Monaco doing a concert. The Oakridge Boys and I went down to her table, it was all set up, had to be cleared, you know, bodyguards all around and stuff, and sang 'Happy Birthday'. That's pretty heavy for a guy from Virginia that, I'm not proud to say, but, didn't finish high school.
  • I'm not regretting the success I've had, it's been incredible, but my one regret is I should've put more into it, to match what I got.
