Nine years have gone by since the last theatrically released Star Trek movie made its way out into the world – but that’s not for lack of trying on the part of Paramount Pictures and various writers, directors, and producers. Back in 2018, S. J. Clarkson was hired to direct a fourth film in the rebooted film franchise that would have seen Chris Pine’s Captain James T. Kirk teaming up with his time-displaced father George, played by Chris Hemsworth… But that fell apart when contract negotiations with the actors fell apart. In 2019, Noah Hawley was hired to write and direct a Star Trek movie, but executives put that on hold. Quentin Tarantino pitched an idea for an R-rated Star Trek movie and Mark L. Smith wrote the screenplay based on Tarantino’s story, but that got shelved when Tarantino confirmed in 2020 that he wouldn’t be directing it. In 2021, WandaVision...

Who’s keeping us on the edge of our seats again? None other than Rian Johnson, director of Brick, Knives Out, and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. He brought his twist-loving mind to Poker Face, Peacock’s retro-style murder mystery series starring Natasha Lyonne as the lie-detecting drifter, Charlie Cale.
Since its 2023 premiere, the show’s witty blend of crime, comedy, and Lyonne’s eccentric charisma has made it a fan favorite. But what happens now? After season 2’s wild finale cliffhanger, in which Charlie and the assassin Iguana plunge off a gorge, when we’ll see season 3 remains a mystery for now.
Where’s the renewal? Not here yet. And why not? That’s the kicker. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Johnson admitted,
We haven’t really started the conversations. If it all makes sense and all comes together, I do love doing the show… but there...

This article contains spoilers for "Poker Face" season 2.
The season 2 finale of "Poker Face" is titled "The End of the Road," but one can only hope that this won't be our last ride with spunky lie detector detective Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne). As of this writing, "Poker Face" hasn't been renewed yet for a third season. We're crossing our fingers here at /Film, though, because "Poker Face" season 2 was just as delightful a ride as season 1.
"Poker Face" streams on Peacock, but it's purposefully made like classical, pre-streaming TV. Charlie is the only constant character as the series follows her solving a different murder each week in a new location. Like in "Columbo," the first act of each episode shows the killing play out in detail, and in the remaining acts, Charlie comes in and solves it.
Part of the show's hook is its guest stars, and part of it...

The possibility of a live-action take of the 1988 anime movie Akira from Warner Bros is no longer, as Deadline has confirmed that the right have lapsed, now reverted back to manga publisher Kodansha.
The movie directed by Katsuhiro Ôtomo follows teenage biker gang member who turns into a rampaging psychic psychopath after a secret military project endangers Neo-Tokyo. The protag learns he has telekinetic abilities which are dangerous to the word. His best friend is the only guy who can stop him.
The Burbank, CA lot has had the movie rights since 2002 with directors like Stephen Norrington, Albert Hughes, Jaume Collet-Serra and Taika Waititi circling. Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian way was circling and at one point, Akira, had an $18.5M California Tax credit. Boardwalk Empire star Michael Pitt was even attached to the project at one point, and then Garret Hedlund. Kristen Stewart, Helena Bonham-Carter and Ken Watanabe even kicked the tires on Akira.

We're hurtling toward an exciting conclusion on Apple TV+'s Murderbot. After last week's episode gave the SecUnit and PresAux team some time out in the wilderness, they're forced to head back to the habitat — and towards the climactic events of the book, All Systems Red.
Murderbot has been a delight to watch each week, but there's an undercurrent of tension to "Foreign Object" that makes it hard to fully relax, no matter how effective the punch lines are. Things have gotten dangerous for our team of hippie scientists, and Murderbot is thinking hard about whether it's even worth it to keep protecting them when they seem so determined to paint him as a bad guy. And can you blame it? Humans are so ungrateful.
Beware Full Spoilers ahead for "Foreign Object."
Noma Dumezweni, Alexander Skarsgård, Akshay Khanna, Tattiawna Jones and Sabrina Wu in "Murderbot," now streaming on Apple TV...

What happens when an animation power couple unintentionally creates two of the most beloved, genre-bending titles on Netflix? It’s rare for a couple to each lead their own hit animated projects, but it’s even rarer for both to top Netflix‘s charts at the same time. That’s exactly what’s happened with K-Pop Demon Hunters and Kipo and the Age of the Wonderbeasts. Both are riding high on ratings, despite releasing in different years.
These two genre-defying stories have different tones but also have striking similarities. The parallels are impossible to ignore. And yes, they are created by animation power couple Radford Sechrist and Maggie Kang. They’re lighting up the streaming world with style.

Ryu Seung-ryong, the veteran Korean star whose lead performance in Disney+’s Moving helped make it the platform’s most-watched Asian original to date, returns to the streamer next month in Low Life, a colorful period crime drama set against the backdrop of 1970s South Korea’s murky underworld. The 11-part series will premiere July 16 with a three-episode debut, followed by weekly releases leading up to a two-part finale on August 13. Netflix’s animated musical KPop Demon Hunters has been the newest obsession of anime and K-pop stans. The film took a bold step of developing into a more mature action film that was neatly sewn together with bright colors, addictive music, and dance moves that resonated with the bubbly characters. Thus, it became the ultimate animated supernatural film that has left everyone impressed.
Amidst the claps and praises, the project was immensely delayed by Wish Dragon, another animated flick featuring the big guns of Hollywood. The voice-acting cast featured stars like Jackie Chan, John Cho, Jimmy Wong, and many more.
However, the star-studded cast was not good enough because Chris Appelhans, the director of the 2021 movie, states how the film was plagued with complex issues that ensured that the project had to be a hit.

Harold & Kumar isn’t just a buddy-comedy—it’s a legendary stoner movie. When the original film dropped in 2004, it took a simple premise and turned it into a cult classic: two friends, high out of their minds, chasing the holy grail of munchies—a White Castle slider. Set against the backdrop of early-2000s suburbia (a world before DoorDash or Uber Eats), the film leaned into absurdity, social satire, and genuine heart.
What started as a wild trip through New Jersey became a trilogy, with Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantánamo Bay (2008) and A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas (2011) adding even more chaos to their journey.
Now, after more than a decade of silence, the franchise is gearing up for a return—and the timing couldn’t be better. With stoner comedies on life support in Hollywood, the original creators (who also happen to be the team...

A cult-favorite stoner comedy duo is gearing up for a long-awaited return. The Harold & Kumar franchise began as a modest hit in 2004 before exploding on DVD, leading to two sequels that carried on the misadventures of the hilarious pair, made up of John Cho and Kal Penn. The last film was released in 2011, but it appears that the marijuana-induced antics of the titular duo will continue as another film is finally in the works.
Per Deadline, a new Harold & Kumar film is in the works from Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald. The trio aren't strangers to the franchise, with many no doubt surprised to learn that they began their movie careers with the 2004 film. After serving up writing duties on the pair's journey to White Castle, they would make their directorial debut with 2008's Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantánamo Bay.

A new Harold & Kumar movie is in the works, bringing back the iconic stoner duo for another wild ride. The project is being written by Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, the creative team behind Netflix’s Cobra Kai. Hurwitz and Schlossberg, who wrote the original 2004 film Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, will also direct this sequel, produced by Lionsgate’s Mandate Pictures.
John Cho and Kal Penn are expected to return as Harold and Kumar, though their contracts are still pending. It’s unclear if Neil Patrick Harris, who stole scenes as himself in the earlier films, will make an appearance.
The movie is in early stages but promises to deliver the same R-rated, chaotic humor that made the franchise a cult hit. “We’re fired up to bring Harold and Kumar back in a return to the unapologetically R-rated, smoke-filled chaos that started it all,...

No one would’ve thought that rebooting The Karate Kid franchise would have worked, but with Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald’s exceptional talent, Cobra Kai turned out to be amazing beyond our expectations. And now that they’ve reinvented one of the most beloved martial arts sagas, their career is circling back to the stoner comedy that started their careers.
The creators are still basking in the glory of their Netflix triumph, and their next big project involves returning to the cult-classic chaos of Harold & Kumar. However, not every franchise is up for reinvention, such as the Back to the Future trilogy, which most wanted to be rebooted, but the creator doesn’t seem to be on board with the idea.

After a successful run, the hit series Cobra Kai ended its run earlier this year on Netflix. Now, the show's creators will go back to their roots with their next big project.
Before getting the chance to get involved with the Karate Kid franchise, it was a stoner comedy movie that launched the careers of creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald. In 2004, the trio released the film Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, spawning a franchise that included two sequels. Per Deadline, it's been reported that a fourth Harold & Kumar film is now moving forward with Hurwitz, Schlossberg, and Heald on board. Reportedly, Heald penned the new script while Hurwitz and Schlossberg will share directing duties.
The original movie told the story of a pair of stoners, Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn), who get a strong craving for White Castle sandwiches after smoking a large amount of cannabis.

Break out the White Castle because Kal Penn and John Cho are expected to return for another “Harold & Kumar” adventure.
A fourth movie is in the works with the original “Harold & Kumar” writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg set to direct a new installment in the buddy stoner comedy series, Variety has confirmed. They will also write the screenplay with Josh Heald. Mandate Pictures, which is owned by Lionsgate, will produce the film.
Cho and Penn are presumed to reprise their roles as Harold and Kumar but no deals have been finalized. It’s unclear if Neil Patrick Harris, who played a pivotal role in the film series, will be back.
“We’re fired up to bring Harold and Kumar back in a return to the unapologetically R-rated, smoke-filled chaos that started it all,” Hurwitz and Schlossberg said in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter, which broke the...

Harold and Kumar are going to get some burgers and buzz one more time.
Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald, the creators behind worldwide Netflix sensation Cobra Kai, have closed a deal to write a new installment of Harold & Kumar, the buddy stoner comedy movie series that was popular in the early 2000s.
Hurwitz and Schlossberg will also direct the feature, which is being developed at Lionsgate-owned Mandate Pictures. It is a full-circle moment for the gentlemen, as their Hollywood career got high thanks to writing the original movie, 2004’s Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, and making their directorial debut with 2008’s Harold & Kumar Escape Guantanamo Bay.
John Cho and Kal Penn, who played the title characters, are expected to return, although no deals have been made with the actors. Neil Patrick Harris was also a key component to the cast, and his involvement is unclear.

As a diehard horror fan, there are few things more satisfying than a well-executed (pun intended) moment of shocking violence.
And Murderbot Season 1 Episode 6 delivers in a way that genuinely made my skin crawl.
But more than that, this episode is Murderbot at its best — equal parts hilarious, introspective, grotesque, and tragic.
(Apple TV+)
It’s the kind of genre-blending sci-fi that doesn’t flinch away from body horror, philosophical questions about personhood, and the weird emotional rollercoaster of watching your favorite cheesy space soap opera while literally bleeding out.
This installment is a turning point in tone and stakes, and I loved every gnarly second of it.

It’s gutsy to go from a heist episode to a con episode. Yet Poker Face does just that with “The Sleezy Georgian,” the latest episode to pit Charlie (Natasha Lyonne) against some high-minded foes. John Cho, Melanie Lynskey, GaTa, and a fun ensemble support the fun little caper.
Spoiler Alert !!!Spoilers for "The Sleezy Georgian" and all episodes of Poker Face to date. Poker Face —”The Sleezy Georgian” Recap
Regina (Melanie Lynskey) arrives at a hotel bar, where she spots Alec (John Chu) sitting alone at a table. She sits beside him and asks about his meal, which elicits a short response. He receives a package from a passerby and places it in his bag. They make small talk, order drinks, and Alec receives another package. He tells Regina they’re just work papers.
Regina pushes him about his job, which he admits is being a luxury travel agent.

The Star Trek universe was launched when the original series premiered on television in 1966. The series pushed the boundaries of sci-fi storytelling with its progressive themes and ideas. However, for all its futuristic ideas and progressivism, the series has had a troubled history with sexuality.
Since the original series, several of the franchise’s installments have included cast and crew who identify as a part of the LGBTQ+ community. Even after franchise creator Gene Roddenberry supported a more nuanced depiction of sexuality, it took a long time for an identifiable gay character to appear. Here is what Roddenberry had to say about Star Trek‘s depiction of sexuality.

With the 10-episode “Murderbot” series, we actually get two sci-fi shows in one: There’s the main sci-fi comedy from Chris and Paul Weitz about a rogue security robot (Alexander Skarsgård) hiding his free will while on a dangerous mission with a group of scientists. In addition, there’s Murderbot’s favorite space soap opera that he watches for escapist fun: the cheesy “Star Trek” parody, “Sanctuary Moon” (starring John Cho as the Captain).
For production VFX supervisor Sean Faden, this meant wrangling a diverse array of nearly 1,800 VFX shots. This included the opening and closing of Murderbot’s helmet (his practical white suit was created by costume designer Laura Jean Shannon), the Ui that reflects his Pov (accompanied by his snarky voice-over commentary), a giant alien worm, and the realistic VFX used on the bridge of the spaceship on “Sanctuary Moon.”

“I’m not a good person. I’m just a bot with access to way too many serials and not enough patience for idiots.” If Alexander Skarsgård’s Murderbot could write its own diary, I bet that’s how it would start. But lucky for you, I’m the one doing the talking: fully human, mildly caffeinated, and hopelessly addicted to sarcastic sci-fi.
Episode 5 of Murderbot, coyly titled Rogue War Tracker Infinite, isn’t just another 22-29 minutes of quirky robot-human bonding and interstellar drama; it’s a full-blown therapy session wrapped in dry humor, trust issues, and enough passive-aggressive dialogue to make Jane Austen roll over and take notes.
From rogue bots with god complexes to ‘woke’ humans flexing their liberal arts degrees at the worst times to Leebeebee and her questionable trauma response, this episode delivers both laughs and existential dread like a perfectly malfunctioning delivery drone.

Since pivoting from making video essays to feature films with 2017's John Cho starring mumblecore movie Columbus, Korean-American filmmaker Kogonada has taken audiences on several big bold beautiful journeys, from the lilting lo-sci-fi of After Yang to the generation-spanning drama of Apple TV+ series Pachinko, to the space operatics of a galaxy far, far away as one of The Acolyte's directorial collective. Now, Kogonada is about to take audiences on A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, dipping his toes into romantic fantasy alongside After Yang lead Colin Farrell and Barbie star Margot Robbie with what looks to be the director's most ambitious movie yet. Check out the trailer below;

Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie are joining forces in A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, the latest feature-length offering from After Yang director Kogonada. Farrell reunites with the filmmaker in a new, mind-bending journey that sees a pair of characters visit their past by walking through mysterious doors.
Two strangers, played by Farrell and Robbie, have a chance meeting and go on a mystical adventure that involves them opening doors and visiting memories in the trippy official trailer for A Big Bold Beautiful Journey. In addition to Farrell and Robbie, the cast features Jodie Turner-Smith, Lily Rabe, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Hamish Linklater. However, as the footage suggests, audiences will mostly be acquainted with Carrell and Robbie's characters, David and Sarah, respectively, both of whom reckon with the key parts of their unique pasts. If After Yang was any indication, expect an ambitious yet emotional journey. You can check out the trailer below.

J.J. Abrams, frustratingly not a Trekkie, made one of the most financially lucrative "Star Trek" films of the franchise when he released his "Star Trek" in 2009. "Star Trek" as a series was kind of dead in the mid-2000s after the cancelation of "Star Trek: Enterprise" and the failure of "Star Trek: Nemesis," so many saw Abrams' film as a great turnaround for the series. Abrams dispensed with the gentle, pacifist philosophies at the core of "Star Trek," and turned in a more traditionally high-octane action movie. It bore the iconography and language of "Star Trek," but told in a slicker, modern blockbuster action movie mold. Abrams recast familiar characters too, hiring younger, hotter actors to play younger, hotter versions of Kirk, Spock, and all the rest. Audiences ate it up, and a sequel was put into production immediately.

As of late, Hulu has been leaning towards grittier stories, with the streaming service consistently spotlighting titles from the sci-fi and horror genres on its top charts. These algorithm-driven rankings have, as usual, been hit or miss: Last month, the trope-heavy yet enjoyable "The Pope's Exorcist" got a lot of love on Hulu, while the third week of May saw the sudden resurgence of an objectively terrible sci-fi flop.
Thankfully, the streaming service's latest Top 10 movies list (in the U.S.) features an intriguing, competently made horror thriller that is currently sitting at #5 (via FlixPatrol). Aneesh Chaganty's "Run," which features Sarah Paulson and Kiera Allen in complex, challenging roles, sets itself apart from comparable genre fare with its frenetic approach to creating terror. Considering how well this 2020 film is doing on Hulu this week, it is safe to say that "Run" will keep you on your toes.

Apple TV+ seems determined to lead the charge when it comes to intelligent sci-fi storytelling. With shows like Severance and Foundation under their belt, the streaming giant now introduces Murderbot, an adaptation of Martha Wells’ acclaimed The Murderbot Diaries. The show premiered its first two episodes this week and instantly struck a chord with fans of moody androids, space-corporate conspiracies, and high-functioning social anxiety.
Set in a corporate-run galaxy where planets are managed like franchises and private security units are leased like coffee machines, Murderbot introduces us to a SecUnit who has hacked its own governor module—giving it free will. But freedom, it turns out, is complicated. Especially when you’ve committed a massacre in your past and your handlers think you’re just another asset on the books.
Here’s a detailed breakdown of the first two episodes and a look into the haunting question that Episode 2 leaves us with.

I feel like sci-fi thriller comedy shows aren't very common, but if done right they can be really interesting and entertaining. So far based on Apple TV+'s new show that falls in that category, Murderbot, the series definitely fits that bill. Two episodes dropped on premiere day, with one installment released each week of the 10-episode season.
The show is based on author Martha Wells' book series of the same name, starring Alexander Skarsgård as a security unit robot tasked with protecting the PreservationAux team who are on an expedition on an unknown planet. While it's there to protect them, SecUnit would rather watch its soap operas. Here's our review of Murderbot episode 1, "FreeCommerce!" Spoilers Below.

If you're a fan of Alexander Skarsgård, then you'll definitely want to tune in to the actor's new show on Apple TV+! Murderbot comes out very soon on the streamer, and we're already hooked on the sci-fi thriller action comedy just from the initial looks of it. Yes, it has all those genres wrapped into one. As a member of the press, I've already seen the first couple of episodes, and I can tell you that the writers have set that tone successfully.
Murderbot premieres Friday, May 16, 2025 with the first two episodes on Apple TV+. There's a total of 10 episodes in the season, all running for about 30 minutes. So it really isn't a very long watch, and it's easy to squeeze into your schedule. Going froward, you can only expect one episode each week though, with the finale on Friday, July 11, 2025. Need a breakdown of when each episode is out?...

This week, Apple TV+ premieres its new sci-fi series Murderbot, and if you've been itching for a new genre show to obsess over, it's time to get hyped. I've seen all 10 episodes of Murderbot and had a total blast watching them. This is a fun, funny show that is going to feel like a breath of fresh air after all the heavy fantasy and sci-fi shows that premiered during the early months of 2025.
Based on The Murderbot Diaries books by Martha Wells, Murderbot stars Alexander Skarsgård as a self-hacking security construct (called a SecUnit) who bypasses its own governor module, the bit of technology which forces it to obey humans. It's not quite sure what to do with this newfound freedom, so it does what any reasonable person would: binge watch TV shows to search for meaning and hope that the humans in its midst will leave it alone. Which they don't,...

Alexander Skarsgard has a long history with television series after his success on True Blood and Big Little Lies. Now, he has a new leading role in Murderbot.
The series is an Apple TV+ original show, created by Chris Weitz and Paul Weitz, and based on The Murderbot Diaries series by Martha Wells. Murderbot follows Skarsgard's titular character, a rogue security robot who secretly gains free will. Ahead of its official release on May 16,Murderbot debuted with a rare 100% score from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
So far, the sci-fi series has only 21 reviews, but all of them are perfect. The score might fluctuate as more reviews come in, although the initial response for the series is encouraging. Considering Murderbot is not officially out yet, there is no audience score at the time of writing.
