10 Martial Arts Movies With Great Romance Stories
Image
Love stories can be found even in movies that are primarily about action. Martial arts movies might have offered audiences some of the most epic fights in cinema history, but they have also produced some of the greatest romance stories. The action genre often intertwines physical combat with emotional depth, with love and relationships playing a crucial role in the process. Interpersonal connections are more often than not the driving force behind the characters’ motivations, making them stand out as some of the key elements of the plot.

Romantic love, in particular, is a central emotional force in martial arts films, making the genre far more than just displays of impressive kick techniques you shouldn’t try at home. In these emotionally complex storylines that balance action and emotion, love is never just about passion — it is about the sacrifices and personal growth that come with it.

10 Best Fantasy Martial Arts Movies From The 1980s
Image
By the 1980s, the genre of fantasy martial arts had produced some of the best martial arts performances of all time. They present the best of both worlds the action, mythology, and magic of fantasy mixed with the thrill of watching graphic martial arts combat. These films were often set in a fantastical world that allowed martial artists to defy physics and perform gravity-defying stunts. The special effects and the magnetic characters of the 1980s made it a golden age of this hybrid genre. Film-makers have taken the conventions of kung fu and transformed them into something exciting and different.

These movies married martial artists to monsters, magic, and adventure, delivering over-the-top fight scenes and exciting storytelling, bringing with them rich folklore, lore, mythical creatures, and heroes on epic journeys. Films like Shogun Assassin and one of Kurt Russell's best comedy films, Big Trouble In Little China didn't just...

Film Review: Brothers from the Walled City (1982) by Lam Ngai Kan
Image
In a somewhat unusual production from Shaw Brothers, at least compared with the style that made them rather successful, “Brothers of the Walled City” seems an effort to make a movie that is more realistic, additionally including melodramatic elements. Perhaps this was an effort to move towards the Hk New Wave that was taking place at the time, but the result, nevertheless, was one of the most violent movies ever to be released by the studio.

Initially set in the walled city of Kowloon, the story revolves around two brothers, younger Xiao De and older Da De, sons of Chan Yuan Loong, a gambling boss whose ethics made him a well respected individual within the area. The two kids were up to shenanigans since school, with their father frequently having to admonish them, usually through violence. When he dies however, stabbed by a junkie, the two are left with his best friend,...

Jackie Chan at an event for The Karate Kid (2010)
Review: Shaw Brothers Classics: Volume 4 on Shout! Factory Blu-ray
Jackie Chan at an event for The Karate Kid (2010)
By the early 1980s, the Shaw Brothers Studio had been eclipsed as Hong Kong’s most popular genre film studio by Golden Harvest and their more comedic take on martial arts cinema with stars like Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung. Plagued by lower theatrical returns, which was exacerbated by the explosion of piracy in Southeast Asia with the advent of home video, the studio would—barring the occasional efforts in later years—cease film production in 1986 and pivot to making TV. As such, Shout! Factory’s fourth box set of Shaw Brothers films, all of which were released between 1980 and 1984, presents a cross-section of the studio’s last great burst of filmmaking.

In terms of directorial variety, this set has the least of any of these collections to date: Of the dozen films on offer, seven are helmed by Chang Cheh and feature all or some of his Venom Mob...

Hopping Mad: The Mr Vampire sequels Blu-ray Review
Image
Though I’m sure there are only approximately 2 people reading this who haven’t seen the original Mr Vampire, we have to set some context before we delve into Eureka’s two disc set of its sequels.

1985’s Mr Vampire (also on Blu-ray from Eureka) stars Lam Ching-Ying as a Taoist priest who, along with his students (Ricky Hui and Chin Siu-ho) has to fight off supernatural threats like a ghost that wants to seduce one of the students and the undead grandfather of Ting-Ting (Moon Lee), who they were supposed to rebury, but allowed to turn and escape. It’s great fun, narratively nonsense a lot of the time, but also somewhat rooted in real traditions and Chinese culture (the unique hopping vampires). For my money it earns its reputation as a classic, which brings us to this set.

Mr Vampire II

This film has almost nothing to do with Mr Vampire.

Film Review: The Seventh Curse (1986) by Lam Nai-Choi
Image
by Simon Ramshaw

Lam Nai-Choi’s “The Seventh Curse” opens with a wistful statement from its creator, prolific pulp writer Ni Kuang: “Everyone has many strange things happen around them every day. Every little thing, as long as you’re willing to dig deeper, can be turned into a strange story.” He sits in a comfortable armchair, nursing a glass of brandy as Miss Asia contestants listen eagerly to his every word. One may almost think it’s the introduction to a “Twilight Zone” tale, one of intrigue and philosophical musing within tales of the weird and macabre. Enter blossoming Hong Kong megastars Chow Yun-Fat and Chin Siu-Ho with a strange story of their own to share, one that blows the viewer’s expectations out of the water with a cult Hong Kong horror-comedy gem, filled with booby-trapped ancient temples, flying kung-fu demons and many, many explosions of blood and gore.

Year Of The Vampire: Hold Your Breath For The Hopping Undead In Mr. Vampire
Image
"If you meet a vampire, don't breathe." This is the sage advice that Master Kau, the Taoist priest played by Lam Ching-ying, gives to his bumbling apprentices, Man-choi (Ricky Hui) and Chau-sang (Chin Siu-ho), in the 1985 Hong Kong action comedy "Mr. Vampire."

Forget everything you know about bloodsuckers; the undead specimens in "Mr. Vampire" are breath-suckers. They have a very deliberate way of hopping with their arms stretched out in front of them, legs also stiff and straight from rigor mortis. In Chinese, these zombie-like revenants are known as the jiangshi; in Japanese, it's kyonshi, while in English, they're sometimes referred to as "Chinese hopping vampires."

Stirred up by the disinterment of a parent who was buried with bad feng shui, the jiangshi of "Mr. Vampire" are a comedic answer to the unsettled ghosts of subsequent Asian horror films like "Ringu" and "The Eye." They're the reanimated corpses of people...

Film Review: Fist of Legend (1994) by Gordon Chan
Image
Making a remake of a beloved classic is always risky business, no matter what genre we are talking about, but in the case of a Bruce-Lee-movie, there is always the obstacle of the leading actor having to compete with the martial-arts legend. Consequently, Jet Li, despite his status within the Chinese film industry and impressive filmography at that point, was hesitant when he was approached to star in a new version of “Fist of Fury”, a feature which cemented the reputation of Lee as one of the major forces within the genre. In an interview with Hong Kong Cinemagic director Gordon Chan explains that, even though he knew about the risks, he always felt the script was something of a weakness of the original, painting a “black-and-white” image of the conflict between Japanese and Chinese. In the end, “Fist of Legend” does a lot more than re-tell the familiar story...

Mister Vampire
Image
Guest reviewer Lee Broughton returns with an assessment of Ricky Lau’s Hong Kong comedy horror show-cum-mystical martial arts romp. Introduced to the vampire mythos are some novel ideas, like scary-looking vampires that get around by hopping on two legs. Effective horror scenarios include expertly choreographed martial arts routines. However, the score on the genre mash-up front is “two out of three ain’t bad:” the brand of broad comedy that Mr. Vampire peddles is hit and miss when it comes to generating genuine laughs.

The 24 hottest projects at this year's Hong Kong Filmart
Jing Wong
There is a thrilling selection of Chinese-language titles at Filmart this year. Liz Shackleton picks out some of the most promising.

With very few Hong Kong or mainland Chinese sellers making the journey to this year’s European Film Market in Berlin, Filmart offers a chance for buyers to catch up with the Chinese-language titles that will be rolled out in the region for the rest of the year.

After serving up the biggest film of the Chinese New Year holiday — Kung Fu Yoga, starring Jackie Chan and directed by Stanley Tong — China’s Sparkle Roll Media has launched a Hong Kong-based sales arm that is selling Ding Sheng’s reboot of the A Better Tomorrow series.

Other high-profile action titles new to market include Distribution Workshop’s Extraordinary Mission, from the creative teams behind the Infernal Affairs and Overheard series, and Huayi Brothers’ crime drama Explosion, starring Duan Yihong.

Sadly Overlooked: The Career of Hong Kong actor Elvis Tsui Kam Kong
Throughout the history of Hong Kong Cinema there have always been those performers that have deservedly become stars. At the same time there are those that it is unfathomable how they did not become bigger stars, with as much talent and skills as their more famous counterparts. For every Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen or Chow Yun Fat there is a Chin Siu Ho, Fan Siu Wong or Yu Rong-Guang. One of my favourite of these performers, and someone who should have become a bigger star is Elvis Tsui Kam Kom. Instantly recognisable to fans of Hong Kong cinema, Tsui has appeared in over 130 films and television series throughout his varied career. Perhaps sometimes guilty of being over the top, he has still managed to...

The Raymond Chow And Golden Harvest Era (Part 2)
(1981-1989 – The Three Dragons)

After the early 1980’s, Golden Harvest started to branch out into the modern-day world leaving behind the Kung Fu cinema age and progressing into something massive. From 1981 onwards, Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao (The Three Dragons) were about to embark on a sensational journey, progressing from there Kung Fu genre into modern-day Martial Arts and stunt work, something Shaw Brothers were left behind and Golden Harvest was to be the new global company.

Jackie Chan back then headed to the United states to try to break into the international market, but the movies he appeared in didn’t really take off and Jackie was also disappointed with the filming of The Big Brawl. Jackie felt he never had chance to show off his action choreography and wasn’t given the space to add his world of experience to the movie. Although it was Directed...

100 Great Kung Fu Movies – Part 4 (39-21)
When it comes to making features like this one, i love the idea of coming up with my own personal “100 Great Kung Fu Movies” of all time. It is tough choosing just 100 because you know there are many more great Kung Fu movies that are not on the list.

I have decided that to make the list, a movie must have a few hand to hand moments during fight scenes in the movies chosen. If for example its mainly sword play with one fight scene hand to hand it won’t make the list. Its old school “style” Kung Fu movies, not modern day settings.

I understand everyone will have their own personal favorites and some may not agree with my list and that’s fine because it’s nice to have different opinions on this genre which keeps it fresh and alive when having good debates.

Anyway, thank you...

Juno Mak's Rigor Mortis is a Visual Marvel: A Movie Review
*full disclosure: a Blu-ray screener of this film was provided by Well Go USA. Director: Juno Mak. Producers: Takashi Shimizu and Juno Mak. Cast: Chin Siu-ho, Nina Paw Hee-ching, Anthony Chan, Kara Wai, Richard Ng and Chung Fat. Rigor Mortis is a Chinese film from Hong Kong. The film was developed by filmmaker Takashi Shimizu (The Grudge) and inexperienced director Juno Mak. A true visual marvel, Rigor Mortis offers lots of horror elements. Though, the film's story is fractured by a number of sideplots. Still, Rigor Mortis offers lots of action in its short runtime. This film viewer enjoyed the many practical effects and Mak's experimentation with the camera. The story begins with a reluctant hero. Siu-ho (Siu-ho Chin) is a former actor and he has been kicked out of his home, by his wife. He chooses suicide as an escape from his pain, but a neighbour intervenes. Tung (Richard Ng...

‘Rigor Mortis’ is a misfiring genre cocktail
Rigor Mortis

Written by Lai-yin Leung and Philip Yung

Directed by Juno Mak

Hong Kong, 2013

Asian horror cinema is one of the most original and frightening forms of storytelling around. Films like Ringu and Ju-on: The Grudge are solid proof that the far east offers exciting new platforms for supernatural creatures (like ghosts) to scare and entice. A slightly interesting but overall mediocre new film, Rigor Mortis continues this trend, but, sadly, the results are somewhat disappointing. This horror-action hybrid from Hong Kong is actually a tribute to the 1985 horror-comedy Mr. Vampire, and contains some of the same actors from that film.

Taking place in an apartment housing complex in Hong Kong, Rigor Mortis focuses on washed-up actor Chin Siu Ho, played, appropriately enough, by Chin Siu-Ho. With his family out of the picture and his career in the toilet, Chin decides to end it all by hanging himself. When he attempts to do this,...

In a Nutshell: Rigor Mortis
Juno Mak's directorial debut Rigor Mortis is a lot of things. Some of it sticks and some of it doesn't. First and foremost though, Rigor Mortis is a love letter to 80s vampire classic Mr. Vampire. Starring original cast members Chin Siu Ho, Anthony Chan, Richard Ng, Billy Lau and Chung Fa, as well as veteran actors Paw Hee Ching and Kara Hui, Juno Mak is clearly not afraid to take chances. Japanese horror master Shimizu Takashi acts as producer, which probably explains why Rigor Mortis is an uneven blend of vampire folklore and Japanese-style ghost story. On a visual level it can't be faulted, with Juno Mak introducing himself to the filmmaking world in ballsy fashion. There is, after all, a very good reason why it was nominated for three 2013 Golden Horse awards, including Best New Director and Best Makeup & Costume Design. Action star Siu Ho (Chin Siu Ho...

Rigor Mortis sets in on Hong Kong DVD
A quick update for those of us (that would be most of us) awaiting the DVD debut of Rigor Mortis. The Hong Kong version, complete with English subtitles, goes on sale January 23, 2014. Best known for performances in Revenge: A Love Story and Dream Home, Juno Mak has turned his attention to directing, and judging by the quality of this sneak peak, there's a strong possibility he might be on to something. Starring Anthony Chan and Siu-hou Chin, Rigor Mortis is an effects-laden, but ultimately striking, horror debut from the Best Actor at the 2011 Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival. Co-produced by J-Horror icon Takashi Shimizu (Ju-On), and reuniting some of the original cast members of the classic Mr Vampire series, Rigor Mortis is set in a haunted housing tower overrun by ghosts, vampires and zombies. Chin Siu-ho is a washed-up, former vampire hunting actor, down on his luck and penniless. He...

Now that Mak's film has completed a hugely successful fesitval run and has opened here in Hong Kong, we can share some of these fantastic images with our readership.Boasting an all-star cast of Hong Kong veterans, including Chin Siu Ho, Anthony Chan Yau, Nina Paw Hee Ching, Cheung Fat, Kara Hui, Richard Ng and Lo Hoi Pang - many of whom were present during our visit - Rigor Mortis is a delightfully atmospheric chiller that promises a successful career ahead for Mak if he continues to direct.Photos © Stefan IrvineYou can find even more images over at Irvine's Flickr...

Revenge: A Love Story gets UK screening
Don’t let the “love” in the title of director Ching-Po Wong’s category III horror thriller Revenge: A Love Story, put you off. As movies go it’s about as far from a chick flick as we are from Jupiter, and is due for a UK theatrical screening next week. London’s Prince Charles Cinema Leicester Sq is the place to be on Wednesday 28 August 8.45pm doors open / 9.00pm film starts. Tickets can be snapped up here. Synopsis: Police are investigating a serial killer who targets pregnant women and the media have labelled him 'The Dissector' and running sensationalist headlines such as "Pregnant woman dissected alive, husband put to death in 100 degrees boiling water". At the scene of yet another such murder, and led by undercover detectives Jeff and Kwok Wah (Chin Siu Ho, Tony Ho) they comb the area and find a known suspect, Chan Kit (Juno Mak), and bring him in.

Two orphans are raised in the legendary Shaolin Temple, and grow to become the greatest fighters of their generation. Watch The Stellar First Trailer For Juno Mak's Rigor Mortis
Juno Mak is bringing back the hopping vampire and - with the help of The Grudge director Shimizu Takashi - he's taking them in a dark and thoroughly compelling direction. It was back in June that our own James Marsh visited the set of the film and brought word of the dark tone that Mak is bringing to his effort, the film populated by seasoned veterans of the original classics such as Chin Siu Ho and Kara Hui. With the film now wrapped up the first trailer has arrived and it delivers on the promise of those early reports. In this eerie and chilling, contemporary, action/special effects laden homage to the classic Chinese vampire movies of the 1980's, writer-director-producer, Juno Mak makes his feature directorial debut. Co-produced by...

Lam Ching Ying Vs The Dead: Top 10 Movies
Lam Ching Ying is my favorite star in any Horror movie, weather it be taking on hopping vampires or just plain old spirits, no one does it better than lam.

His roles in the Mr.Vampire movies show his skills as an actor, with great comic timing which goes well with his serious acting side, which we dont normally get to see on screen. This role would make him, not just a big star in Asia but also worldwide as the master of Vampire killers.

I hope you enjoy my top 10 list and please feel free to write your own favorites in the comments box at the bottom of the page.

Lesbian Vampire Warriors (2010) Movie Review
It’s a fact of life that many Asian films undergo name changes en route to international distribution, often ending up with rather generic sounding monikers that have little to do with their actual content. However, by any standard, very few distributors have been quite as bold or sneaky as Arrow Films with their UK DVD release of the Hong Kong production “Vampire Warriors”, which they’ve cunningly re-titled “Lesbian Vampire Warriors”, presumably in a bid to attract a certain kind of male viewer. This is furthered by the DVD cover, which features three of the film’s female supporting cast in vaguely racy gear and brandishing bloody weapons, explicitly suggesting a potent mix of sex and violence. The plot follows upcoming Mainland martial arts actress Jiang Luxia (“True Legend”) as vampire hunter Ar, who co-exists peacefully with a nearby family of ‘vegetarian’ vampires who avoid feeding on humans, including Si (Chrissie Chau,...

DVD Review: Lesbian Vampire Warriors
Lesbian Vampire Warriors

Stars: Luxia Jiang, Wah Yuen, Chrissie Chow, Siu-hou Chin, Pinky Cheung, Rock Ji, Rachel Lam | Written and Directed by Dennis Law

Described as a “Twilight-inspired Chinese vampire thriller” Lesbian Vampire Warriors is as far from Twilight as you can get. It’s obvious advertising spiel of course to try get vampire fans to show some interest, but in a world where most vampire fans hate even the mention of Twilight it’s to be hoped this does not turn people off, because this film deserves more.

Ar is a vampire hunter, and very much human. She befriends a vampire Max who she agrees she’ll let live as long as she does not kill any humans. Along with Max comes her family, these vampires could be described as quite melodramatic as they spend most of the time wanting to feel something, but of course as they are...

Vampire Thriller Rigor Mortis Marks Juno Mak Directorial Debut
Hong Kong pop-star turned actor Juno Mak, who has given impressive performances in such films as Revenge: A Love Story and Let's Go! (both directed by Wong Ching Po), has revealed to Twitch that production is underway on his directorial debut. Supernatural thriller Rigor Mortis harks back to the classic Chinese vampire movies of the 1980s, in particular the Mr. Vampire series, which starred Lam Ching Ying as unibrowed Taoist priest Master Kau, ably supported by Ricky Hui Koon Ying and Chin Siu Ho. Eschewing much of the comedic tone of those films, Mak brings back Chin (the only surviving member of that original golden trio) to play a tortured version of himself in a much darker, more introspective horror film. Written by Philip Yung (Glamourous...

The Vampire Killer – Lam Ching Ying (Vampire movies)
I thought it was about time i did a post on the great vampire buster of all time, yes you got it, lam Ching Ying. This will be listing all the movies and tv series where Lam Ching Ying either stars in or takes on the hopping vampires and evil spirits.

His roles in the Mr.Vampire movies show his skills as an actor, with great comic timing which goes well with his serious acting side, which we normally get to see on screen. This role would make him, not just a big star in Asia but also worldwide as the master of Vampire killers.

Other great movies which he starred in (But not in a vampire movie) were the likes of The Prodigal Son, School On Fire, Eastern Condors, The Magnificent Butcher and Painted Faces.

Serial killer thriller Revenge: A Love Story - DVD Review
Director: Wong Ching Po. Review: Adam Wing. According to director Wong Ching Po (Jiang Hu), Revenge: A Love Story is a movie about hatred, and there’s a good chance it won’t take you long to figure that out for yourself. “Human beings can never let go of hatred. Being in hatred is like a one way trip into darkness, you will never come back until it is settled.” If you want an idea of how brutal his latest vision is at times, you only have to read the words of the man himself. “We wanted to relieve the pain brought by hatred, but we failed. We can’t imagine how torturing it is to live with hatred after all.” Revenge: A Love Story isn’t the perfect date movie then, but it is available on UK shores for the first time this month courtesy of Terror-cotta. The first...

The Lost Bladesman (2011) Movie Review
With so many Chinese historical epics continuing to clutter up the box office, films are having to offer something increasingly special in order to stand out from the stampeding herd. “The Lost Bladesman” does just that, being based on the legendary historical “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” figure Guan Yu and starring the one and only Donnie Yen, a combination which has translated into massive success at the domestic box office. With Yen unsurprisingly handling the action choreography as well as taking the lead role, the film was directed by duo Alan Mak (“Infernal Affairs”) and Felix Chong (“Once a Gangster”), who also worked together on the popular thriller “Overheard”, and has an illustrious supporting cast, including acclaimed Mainland actor and director Jiang Wen (who recently helmed the excellent “Let the Bullets Fly” and the powerful “The Sun Also Rises”), Betty Sun (“Just Another Pandora’s Box”), Andy On (“True...

The First Trailer for The Lost Bladesman is Ready to Dazzle Your Mind
This sucker might be only a minute and thirty seconds long, but it certainly packs one hell of a punch. Alan Mak and Felix Chong’s “The Lost Bladesman”, which stars Donnie Yen, Sun Li, Jiang Wen, Alex Fong Chung Sun, Andy On, Chin Siu Ho, Wang Xue Bing, and Shao Bing, has the potential to be pretty darn snazzy. Not surprisingly, I tend to flock towards anything that involves Donnie Yen in some form or fashion. The guy is, simply put, extremely badass, and I’m always down for watching him pummel his on-screen companions. From the looks of the embedded trailer, there is definitely some pummeling going on. Which is always a good thing, in my opinion. “The Lost Bladesman” slices its way into Hong Kong theaters on April 28th, 2011. Many thanks to the folks at Film Smash for posting this kick-ass little teaser. function getVideo() { var so = new SWFObject("http://cdn.
