Spencer died Monday in a hospital in Richmond, Virginia, her What’s Happening!! co-star Haywood Nelson told The Hollywood Reporter.

She was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy in 2014 and in 2018 underwent emergency surgery to relieve bleeding on her brain. A GoFundMe page was set up to help her pay for her medical expenses.

“She suffered for a very long time but did it with a great deal of courage,” Nelson said.

Larry Charles’ HBO documentary about the life of Seinfeld’s co-creator famously never actually made it to HBO. The two-part doc was mysteriously pulled from the schedule so that “Larry could do it for an audience.” Of course, documentaries can’t really be replicated on stage, hence why Ken Burns never plays stadium shows.

The confusing situation was addressed in Charles’ recent memoir, Comedy Samurai: Forty Years of Blood, Guts and Laughter, in which he reveals that David was unhappy with his physical appearance in the doc (which began as a project for YouTube) and was uncharacteristically emotional while chatting with his friend and collaborator. “He cried. We talked about death and spirituality. We talked about his family,” Charles writes in the book.

Variety has learned exclusively that Jana Schmieding, Bobby Wilson, Wes Studi, and Rachel Dratch are all attached to star in the untitled single-cam comedy. As previously reported, Wilson is also a writer and executive producer on the show.

Variety exclusively reported on the pilot pickup in March. The official logline for the project states that it is “An ensemble comedy set at a Native community center in Oakland, Calif. The employees hustle to keep the lights on while lifting up those in need.”

The pilot hails from writers Sierra Teller Ornelas, Jackie Keliiaa, and Wilson. All three are also executive producers, with Teller Ornelas set to serve as showrunner. Morgan Sackett will also executive produce. Universal Television, where both Teller Ornelas and Sackett are under overall deals, is the studio.
