Black Dynamite is nothing short of a cult classic. Starring Michael Jai White as the eponymous hero, the comedy is filled with dozens of memorable lines, which (like Borat), fans are still incessantly quoting to this day. While fiendish Dr. Wu's "zest for Kung-Fu treachery," "Who the hell is interrupting my kung-fu?" and "Haha! I threw that sh*t before I walked in the room!" are all classics, there is one line that stands above them all as the most quotable from the movie. But, according to Cedric Yarbrough, who delivered the line, it was completely improvised.
MovieWeb recently had the pleasure of speaking to Cedric Yarbrough about his biggest dramatic role to date in Clint Eastwood's Juror #2. But, we couldn't help but ask about his time on Black Dynamite during the conversation. When asked, "How many times do fans come up and say that they're 'declaring war on...

The following contains spoilers for Evil Season 4, now streaming on Paramount+.
Michael Emerson is known for bringing great villains to life -- and Evil's Leland Townsend is one of the worst in his repertoire. The would-be leader of a demonic organization trying to bring about the Biblical End Times, Leland has none of the redeeming qualities that the best baddies have. Yet nonetheless, Emerson makes the character compelling, grounded... and, at times, even a little funny.
Leland is exactly what audiences see. He is unscrupulous, violent and is untrustworthy on a level typically reserved for supervillains who shoot their own henchmen. While much about Evil is left open to interpretation, series creators and showrunners Robert and Michelle King gave audiences one of the most clearly villainous characters in the series and on television in general. Emerson explains to Cbr why playing Leland is fun -- while reminiscing about playing...

Speed 2: Cruise Control failed to capture the magic of the original, with poor reviews and a terrible box-office performance. Tony Scott's Unstoppable, featuring Denzel Washington, feels more like a Speed sequel than the disappointing Cruise Control. A potential Speed 3 could happen if a compelling concept is found and Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves are on board.
One of Denzel Washington's best B-movies is exactly what a Speed sequel should have been. Speed arrived in 1994 and became an unexpected summer blockbuster. The movie's simple but ingenious premise, relentless pacing and the incredible chemistry between Keanu Reeves and a little-known actress named Sandra Bullock combined to make it a must see. The film has aged incredibly well too; sadly, this same compliment does not extend to Speed 2: Cruise Control. Now, Speed 2 would have sucked with or without Keanu Reeves, but once he passed, the film should have been canceled.

Washington's diverse filmography includes high-octane thrillers and socially conscious dramas, appealing to a wide audience. In January 2009, during a midnight screening at Sundance, Michael Jai White knew he had something special in Black Dynamite. Nine months later, the Blaxploitation spoof’s limited theatrical release and minimal box office gross didn’t stop its immediate fate as a cult classic. Demand for a sequel soon followed, and so White, as co-writer of the film, penned a direct sequel that struggled to get off the ground due to creative differences with a producer.
Consequently, White went back to the drawing board and pursued an idea he had at the same time as Black Dynamite’s conception. If that action-comedy paid homage to Blaxploitation films through parody, then it would only make sense to take a similar approach with other genres. So, White revisited his earlier ideas for three other genre exercises including a horror movie, a kung fu movie and a Western. That Western is now known as Outlaw Johnny Black,...

The "blaxploitation" genre is an especially fascinating one. A product of the 1970s, it came about due to a variety of coalescing factors, from a gradual change in race relations brought about at the time to more readily-available resources for independent creators. Despite the negative connotations the name suggests, blaxploitation films filled a niche in the moviegoer market at the time: they were films made by black filmmakers for predominantly black audiences, featuring black characters overcoming issues the black community faced. It also helped that these films are thoroughly entertaining, displaying a passion for filmmaking that overcomes low budgets and questionable production quality.
It's important to know this for Michael Jai White's upcoming western, The Outlaw Johnny Black. A spiritual sequel to Black Dynamite, White's own hilariously-over-the-top tribute to blaxploitation films, The Outlaw Johnny Black will see him transported to the wild west in an equally-off-the-wall adventure. Sian Heder directed “Coda,” which played at this year’s Sundance Film Festival in the U.S. Dramatic Competition and won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award. In a record-setting purchase, Apple Studios has emerged as the winner of “Coda,” the virtual Sundance sensation about a young hearing girl who grapples with breaking away from her deaf family.
The Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht-led studio paid close to $25 million for the film, breaking last year’s recording setting “Palm Springs” sale at north of $22 million.
As Variety previously reported, rapturous audience response and glowing reviews powered the 2021 Sundance Day One premiere to a bidding war, which included interest from Netflix and Amazon. The latter was said to be keen on the upbeat tearjerker, Variety reported, but did not have the bandwidth to release the film in 2021 with their loaded slate.
Apple acquired worldwide rights on the project, and is said to be in the process of buying out pre-sold international territories that helped finance production.

Sian Heder’s “Coda” has sold to Apple for up to $25 million after an intense bidding war ended in a Sundance record-setting deal, an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap.
The deal knocked down the $17.5 million that “Palm Springs” went for last year to Hulu and Neon to No. 2 as the highest sale from a film from the Sundance Film Festival.
In her follow-up to “Tallulah,” Heder directed the drama about a teen girl (Emilia Jones), who is the only hearing person in her deaf family and is stuck keeping their family fishing business afloat. But when she’s drawn to her school’s choir club, she’s encouraged by her teacher (Eugenio Derbez) to pursue a career in music. The film that premiered in the U.S. Dramatic Competition on Thursday was an instant crowd-pleaser and earned strong reviews for its deaf representation on screen.

“Coda,” a drama about a teenage girl who is the only hearing person in her family, is sparking an intense bidding war following its crowd-pleasing debut at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The movie has been praised for featuring deaf performers in key roles, and saw emotionally-charged social media reactions. That will likely mean that the film will snag an eye-popping number when a deal is finally signed, although negotiations are ongoing with multiple parties expressing interest.
The film and its likely sale is a litmus test for how robust the market will be during a virtual version of Sundance after the festival made the decision to go largely digital due to Covid-19.

That admonition credited to Coco Chanel about taking one thing off before leaving the house came to mind in the first minutes of “City on a Hill.” Sure, the line is a cliché, but it’s somehow less well-worn than the Boston-cop aesthetic that pervades Showtime’s new drama. This is a show that resists no opportunity, even a glancing one, to remind viewers precisely where it’s set. At a funeral, Kevin Bacon’s FBI-agent character comforts a widow that her husband was “like Jack Kennedy”; moments later, confronted by mourners he’d promised to pay if they showed up, he notes, “Did you forget what state you’re living in, pal? This is Massachusetts — tax is a bitch.” Elsewhere, a friend monologues that Bacon’s Jackie Rohr is “a classic Boston asshole — from a time in this city when things were so f–ked up that if...

‘City On A Hill’: Showtime Offers First Episode Of Kevin Bacon Drama For Free Online – Watch It Here
As it sometimes does with new shows, Showtime has posted the first episode of its Kevin Bacon-Aldis Hodge period drama City on a Hill online for free. The series premieres June 16 on the premium cable net, but you can watch it above.
Created, written and executive produced by Chuck MacLean and based on an original idea by Ep Ben Affleck, the 10-episode City on a Hill is set in the early 1990s Boston, rife with violent criminals emboldened by local law enforcement agencies in which corruption and racism was the norm. It centers on Assistant District Attorney Decourcy Ward (Hodge), who arrives from Brooklyn and forms an unlikely alliance with a corrupt yet venerated FBI veteran Jackie Rohr (Bacon). Together, they take on a family of armored car robbers from Charlestown in a case that grows to involve, and ultimately subvert, the entire criminal justice system of Boston.

The traditional biopic is slowly becoming a relic of the cinematic past. By and large, films made about real life public figures tend to try and find a new angle in depicting someone’s life. That way, it can never feel recycled or stale. However, some movies are still taking the tried and true path. Occasionally, it still works, but most of the time, it ends up feeling a bit empty. Such is the case with Saint Judy, a well intentioned and undeniably timely biopic that never fully realizes its potential. The story being told is important, for sure. Unfortunately, its depiction leaves something to be desired. The film is a look at attorney Judy Wood (Michelle Monaghan), who would single-handedly changed the asylum laws in the United States, all in an effort to help save women’s lives. A public defender, Judy accepts a job out west in California...
