Speed 2: Cruise Control failed to capture the magic of the original, with poor reviews and a terrible box-office performance. In January 2009, during a midnight screening at Sundance, Michael Jai White knew he had something special in Black Dynamite. Nine months later, the Blaxploitation spoof’s limited theatrical release and minimal box office gross didn’t stop its immediate fate as a cult classic. Demand for a sequel soon followed, and so White, as co-writer of the film, penned a direct sequel that struggled to get off the ground due to creative differences with a producer.

Consequently, White went back to the drawing board and pursued an idea he had at the same time as Black Dynamite’s conception. If that action-comedy paid homage to Blaxploitation films through parody, then it would only make sense to take a similar approach with other genres. Michael Jai White, the writer, star, and director of Outlaw Johnny Black, reveals that the film is part of a trilogy set in a specific time period, with one film being the comedic Western and the others being a Western homage and a horror movie. White co-wrote the film with Byron Minns, who also stars in the movie, and the two drew inspiration from Blaxploitation films like Blacula and Scream Blacula Scream. The "blaxploitation" genre is an especially fascinating one. A product of the 1970s, it came about due to a variety of coalescing factors, from a gradual change in race relations brought about at the time to more readily-available resources for independent creators. Gravitas Ventures has acquired North American rights to Last Night in Rozzie, a Boston-set drama starring Neil Brown Jr, Nicky Whelan, Jeremy Sisto and Kevin Chapman. Sean Gannet directed the pic, which will now get a day-and-date release beginning September 17.

Written by Ryan McDonough, the plot centers on New York lawyer Ronnie Russo (Brown) who becomes entangled in a complicated web of conflicting loyalties when summoned to his Boston hometown by a dying childhood friend (Sisto). Sent on a mission to fulfill his friend’s final wish – a reunion with his estranged son – Russo is forced to confront his past and a secret childhood trauma he’s kept hidden for more than 25 years.

“Coda” writer and director Siân Heder has signed a multiyear overall deal with Apple, the streamer announced on Wednesday.

Under the deal, Apple will have a first-look on her features, as well as an exclusive deal for series written and developed by Heder.

In January, Apple bought Heder’s film “Coda” for a record-breaking $25 million after an intense bidding war. Heder wrote and directed the drama about a teen girl who is the only hearing person in her deaf family and is stuck keeping their fishing business afloat. It starred Emilia Jones, Troy Kotsur, Ferdia Walsh-Peelo, Daniel Durant, Amy Forsyth, Kevin Chapman and Oscar winner Marlee Matlin. Apple and Heder also collaborated on the critically acclaimed series “Little America.”

“Coda,” the critical darling about a child of deaf adults that swept the top prizes at Sundance and was acquired in a record deal out of the festival, will debut on Apple TV+ and in theaters on Friday, Aug. 13.

Sian Heder directed “Coda,” which played at this year’s Sundance Film Festival in the U.S. Dramatic Competition and won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award. The film also picked up the Special Jury Award for Ensemble Cast and the Directing Award for Heder, an unprecedented feat at Sundance.

The hype was so huge that Apple then acquired “Coda” for a whopping $25 million in a bidding war — the most ever spent out of Sundance by a huge margin.

In a record-setting purchase, Apple Studios has emerged as the winner of “Coda,” the virtual Sundance sensation about a young hearing girl who grapples with breaking away from her deaf family.

The Zack Van Amburg and Jamie Erlicht-led studio paid close to $25 million for the film, breaking last year’s recording setting “Palm Springs” sale at north of $22 million.

As Variety previously reported, rapturous audience response and glowing reviews powered the 2021 Sundance Day One premiere to a bidding war, which included interest from Netflix and Amazon. The latter was said to be keen on the upbeat tearjerker, Variety reported, but did not have the bandwidth to release the film in 2021 with their loaded slate.

Apple acquired worldwide rights on the project, and is said to be in the process of buying out pre-sold international territories that helped finance production.

Sian Heder’s “Coda” has sold to Apple for up to $25 million after an intense bidding war ended in a Sundance record-setting deal, an individual with knowledge of the deal told TheWrap.

The deal knocked down the $17.5 million that “Palm Springs” went for last year to Hulu and Neon to No. 2 as the highest sale from a film from the Sundance Film Festival.

In her follow-up to “Tallulah,” Heder directed the drama about a teen girl (Emilia Jones), who is the only hearing person in her deaf family and is stuck keeping their family fishing business afloat. But when she’s drawn to her school’s choir club, she’s encouraged by her teacher (Eugenio Derbez) to pursue a career in music. “City on a Hill” has been renewed for a second season at Showtime. The announcement was made Friday at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.

The news comes ahead of the Season 1 finale, which is set to air on Aug. 18. The series stars Aldis Hodge, Kevin Bacon, Jonathan Tucker, Mark O’Brien, Jill Hennessy, Lauren E. Banks, Amanda Clayton, Kevin Chapman, Jere Shea, and guest star Sarah Shahi.

It was created and is executive produced by Chuck MacLean with Tom Fontana serving as showrunner and executive producer. According to Showtime, the series is averaging 3.5 million viewers per episode in multi-platform viewing.

The traditional biopic is slowly becoming a relic of the cinematic past. By and large, films made about real life public figures tend to try and find a new angle in depicting someone’s life. That way, it can never feel recycled or stale. However, some movies are still taking the tried and true path. Occasionally, it still works, but most of the time, it ends up feeling a bit empty.
