The Grey's Anatomy Role You Forgot Superman Star Rachel Brosnahan Played
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

It's not particularly weird that actor Rachel Brosnahan appeared on "Grey's Anatomy," largely because the show has been running for so long that quite a lot of people have dropped by for a visit at the fictional Seattle hospital, Grey Sloan Memorial, that serves as the setting for Shonda Rhimes' popular series. Still, Brosnahan's appearance on the popular ABC medical drama was a little while ago, so if you're a little hazy, I'll refresh your memory about her role during the show's ninth season in 2013.

First things first. Right now, Brosnahan is a newly minted movie star thanks to her...

Katherine Heigl’s Feud on the Sets of Grey’s Anatomy, Explained
Image
Though it’s been decades since Katherine Heigl left Grey’s Anatomy, her exit was as dramatic off-screen as it was on. Playing Izzie Stevens from 2005 to 2010, Heigl reportedly left the show in season 6. However, she won audiences over with storylines like Izzie’s romance with Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) and her heartbreaking brain tumor arc, even earning a 2007 Emmy.

Yet her exit sparked major questions, especially when she declined Emmy consideration for her character in 2008, claiming (via The New York Times)

Grey's Anatomy: How Did Giacomo Gianniotti's Dr. Andrew DeLuca Die?
Image
This article contains a discussion of mental health.

At this point in the run of "Grey's Anatomy", a lot of the show's original cast members have left the fictional Seattle hospital that employs Dr. Meredith Grey, the titular physician played by Ellen Pompeo. Hell, even Pompeo has technically left the series, and other Og surgical interns like Dr. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) have "moved to Switzerland" or, in the case of Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), left Seattle to reunite with an estranged love.

Besides those original players, other actors — and their associated characters, obviously — have dipped in and out of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital (née Seattle Grace Hospital) over the years, and that includes Giacomo Gianniotti's Dr. Andrew DeLuca. Introduced at the very end of the show's 11th season in 2015, Andrew becomes a huge part of "Grey's Anatomy" in season 12 — earning Gianniotti a promotion to the main cast...

Why Justin Chambers' Dr. Alex Karev Left Grey's Anatomy
Image
When Shonda Rhimes' medical drama "Grey's Anatomy" premiered as a humble mid-season replacement in 2005, it centered around five brand-new surgical interns: Dr. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), Dr. George O'Malley (T.R. Knight), Dr. Isobel "Izzie" Stevens (Katherine Heigl), Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), and the titular Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo). As of 2025, all of those original interns have left the series, including the woman who gives the show its cheeky title. Cristina canonically "lives in Switzerland" now at a new hospital, George gets hit by a bus and dies a pretty agonizing death (sorry for the spoiler?), and Izzie vanishes into the ether after Heigl had some on-set drama with Rhimes; Pompeo still appears on the series from time to time and serves as an executive producer but isn't part of the regular cast anymore.

So what of Chambers and Alex Karev? Chambers was famously a late addition to the pilot,...

Why T.R. Knight's George O'Malley Left Grey's Anatomy
Image
People leave long-running TV shows all the time — and because "Grey's Anatomy" has been airing since 2005, that sentiment is particularly true when it comes to the long-running medical drama created by Shonda Rhimes. Sara Ramirez hung up their stethoscope as Dr. Callie Torres to pursue new opportunities, Sandra Oh's Dr. Cristina Yang moved to Switzerland for a brand new career, Patrick Dempsey wanted to spend more time racing cars and stopped playing Dr. Derek Shepherd as a result, and Katherine Heigl reportedly clashed with Rhimes behind the scenes after playing Dr. Isobel "Izzie" Stevens for six seasons of the series. Hell, even the titular Dr. Grey — Meredith, played by Ellen Pompeo — technically left the series in season 19, though Pompeo is still an executive producer and provides the show's voiceover. So, what about Dr. George O'Malley (played by T.R. Knight), one of the show's five original surgical interns?

I'll explain how and why shortly,...

The 15 Best Grey's Anatomy Episodes, Ranked
Image
No other series offers the sheer plethora of possible picks for an episode ranking that "Grey's Anatomy" does — and we do mean that quite literally, as the ABC medical show is the longest non-police primetime drama in American TV history. While other iconic long-runners like "The Simpsons" and "Law & Order" ensure renewability by way of stringent episodicism, all but starting over with fresh new stories each week, what makes "Grey's" such a stunning phenomenon is that it's been going for 21 years and 448 episodes (to say nothing of every spin-off show) with genuine, sustained serialization, and the most character-based approach in all of medical television.

In other words, a ranking of the best-ever "Grey's Anatomy" hours (and occasional two hours) is an exercise in revisitation. These are episodes that have carved out a place in fans' and critics' minds as memory milestones in the way that major life events do.

Grey’s Anatomy is the longest-running show on ABC, spanning over its two-decade run, entertaining and letting viewers explore what goes on behind a hospital setup. Why Sandra Oh's Cristina Yang Left Grey's Anatomy
Image
People come and go on "Grey's Anatomy" all the time. The long-running medical drama created by Shonda Rhimes was introduced as a mid-season replacement back in 2005 and has seen a lot of main cast members join and leave the show over the years; even its titular "Grey," Ellen Pompeo's Meredith, "left" the series in November 2022. But what about Meredith's "person" Dr. Cristina Yang, the cardiothoracic superstar played by Sandra Oh for the show's first 10 seasons?

Cristina is one of the show's five original surgical interns — alongside Meredith, Dr. George O'Malley (T.R. Knight), Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), and Dr. Isobel "Izzie" Stevens (Katherine Heigl), all of whom also leave the show and its fictional Seattle-based hospital behind at some point — and pretty early in the series, it's established that she and Meredith are best friends. Despite her relationships with other doctors on "Grey's Anatomy," like cardiothoracic attending Dr.

Why Katherine Heigl's Izzie Stevens Left Grey's Anatomy
Image
Partway through the sixth season of Shonda Rhimes' massive hit "Grey's Anatomy", we see Isobel "Izzie" Stevens, one of the series' original surgical interns played by Katherine Heigl, for the final time. To call Izzie's exit abrupt is ... an understatement. After getting fired from Seattle Grace-Mercy West hospital, Izzie flees, leaving her new husband, Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), behind. When she comes back in "I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked," she suggests that maybe she and Alex can fix things; he tells her that's not possible, and Izzie is never seen or heard from again.

Characters leave "Grey's Anatomy" all the time. Patrick Dempsey's leading man, Dr. Derek Shepherd (often referred to as "McDreamy"), left the series in season 11, Sandra Oh hung up her stethoscope in season 10 when her character, Dr. Cristina Yang, moved to Switzerland, and even the titular Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo,...

'Grey's Anatomy' Welcomes a 'Yellowstone' Star in New Season 21 Images

This week, the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital is opening its doors to receive Yellowstone star Piper Perabo for an extended stay. Unfortunately for her character, though, a long stay for a patient in Grey's Anatomy usually means bad news. In order to tease the new episode and reveal a bit more of what will happen to the new character, ABC unveiled a set of new images from this Thursday's installment of the long-running medical drama.

The images reveal that Perabo won't be the actual patient, but rather her onscreen daughter, played by Sophia Kopera (Bosch: Legacy). Titled "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone," the episode will cover a challenging case handled by Amelia (Caterina Scorsone). The episode synopsis reveals that Amelia will have to perform a high-risk brain surgery on the little girl, and the parents will understandably be concerned. Since Perabo is doing a three-episode arc, we can already suspect...

Ellen Pompeo Won’t Leave ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ as That Makes ‘No Sense’ Financially: Everybody Else Would Make Money ‘From My Hard Work and I Wouldn’t’
Image
Ellen Pompeo has starred in “Grey’s Anatomy” since its debut in 2005, and it sounds like she doesn’t plan to leave the show anytime soon.

Although Pompeo’s character, Meredith Grey, has had less screen time since 2022, she recently shared why she has no intentions of stepping away from the ABC medical drama for good.

“That would make no sense, emotionally or financially. The show was streamed more than a billion times in 2024. More than a billion times,” Pompeo explained to El País. “The companies that own the show and stream the show make a lot of money from our images and our voices and our faces.”

“If I were to walk away completely, everybody gets to make money from my hard work for 20 years and I wouldn’t make any money,” Pompeo added. “To me, it doesn’t make any sense that everybody gets to profit off of my hard work.

'I Have Zero Endings:' Grey's Anatomy Creator Doesn't Know How the Series Will End
Image
Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes recently opened up about the potential conclusion of ABC’s longest-running medical drama. Even though she’s no longer the drama’s showrunner, Rhimes has continued to be an integral part of the series as an executive producer.

When asked about her possible plans for the ending of Grey’s Anatomy during a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Rhimes admitted that she stopped thinking about the show’s conclusion after Season 8. At the moment, she doesn’t have any idea about how the medical drama will end. "I have zero endings for Grey's now. I mean, literally zero. Until Season 8, I still had endings," she shared. "And by the way, I felt like I ended the series several times. I was like, ‘This could be the finale, this could be it,’ but it wasn't. Katherine Heigl Recalls Awkward 'Grey's Anatomy' Ghost Sex Scenes With Jeffrey Dean Morgan
Image
You would think that a series set in a regular hospital would be a pretty grounded affair, but Grey's Anatomy has given fans many outlandish moments that have pushed believability beyond its medical reality. One such moment was when Katherine Heigl’s Izzie Stevens had ghost sex with Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s Denny Duquette – well, I mean, you would, wouldn’t you? However, 20 years later, the actress has revealed that the “embarrassment” of the scene is too much for her to watch the episode with her kids because she feels they will ridicule her.

Grey’s Anatomy is still going strong, but with a very different cast to that of the time Heigl was on the show, and a decade before Morgan would become much better known for playing everyone’s favorite Walking Dead villain, Negan. In the second season of the show, Morgan’s Denny was being treated for heart...

Katherine Heigl Worries Her Kids Will “Make Fun” Of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Ghost Sex Scene
Image
With two decades of wild, emotionally-charged television to pull from, Grey’s Anatomy has given fans plenty of unbelievable moments.

After 20 years, Katherine Heigl recently admitted she can’t watch the ABC medical procedural with her kids, crediting her ghostly sex scene with co-star Jeffrey Dean Morgan in the Season 5 episode ‘In the Midnight Hour’ (2005) as one that makes her “so embarrassed.”

“We have not watched Grey’s. Partly because I was like, ‘How do I explain that?'” she told Entertainment Weekly of the scene. “But I’m like, “‘ou can watch it, but I don’t want to sit next to you. I will be so embarrassed.’ I don’t know how to explain this. And she will make me embarrassed. She will make fun of me. No, it’s better not to give her that ammunition. Do you know what I’m saying?”

In Season 2 of the Shonda Rhimes series,...

Katherine Heigl Says ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Ghost Sex Was ‘Confusing,’ Reunites With Jeffrey Dean Morgan to Discuss ‘Awkward’ Storyline: ‘She’s F—ing a Dead Guy?’
Image
Katherine Heigl and Jeffrey Dean Morgan reunited for the first time in years as part of Entertainment Weekly’s 20th anniversary of Shondaland and got brutally honest about one of “Grey’s Anatomy’s” worst storylines: Ghost sex. The romance between Heigl’s Izzie and Morgan’s Denny in Season 2 bolstered the show’s popularity and powered Heigl to an Emmy win. Denny died in the season finale, but his Season 5 return as a ghost Izzie sees and has sex with confused the actors as much as it did the viewers.

“It’s funny because I don’t remember much of that season because it just… I don’t know that anybody thought that was working when we were doing it,” Morgan admitted to EW, with Heigl calling the storyline “awkward.”

“It was confusing for everyone,” Heigl said. “There’s one particular scene that I will not watch with my children ever.

Natalie Morales Shares Why She Joined 'Grey's Anatomy'
Image
When a TV show has been on the air for, like, a millennium, keeping things fresh and introducing new characters is the only way to keep even die-hard viewers glued to their screens. Considering ABC's Grey's Anatomyhas captivated prime-time viewers since 2005 (being a staple series in the Shondaverse), it has mastered the art of perfect comfort television via impressive character development and juicy storylines involving imperfect but sexy doctors.

Season 20 of the five-time Emmy-winning medical drama saw Natalie Morales guest star as pediatric surgeon Dr. Monica Beltran, who's more interested in being a great doctor than getting buddy-buddy with her Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital colleagues. After appearing in six episodes of Grey's Anatomy Season 20, Morales officially joined Season 21 as a recurring cast member.

Morales spoke with MovieWebahead of the theatrical release of her film My Dead Friend Zoe, discussing what made her come back to Grey's for another handful of episodes as the no-nonsense Dr.

The Correct Order To Watch Every Grey's Anatomy Show
Image
When "Grey's Anatomy" premiered as a mid-season replacement in March of 2005 thanks to creator and showrunner Shonda Rhimes, it's safe to say that nobody genuinely thought it would keep running and running and running until it became the longest-running medical drama in TV history. As of this writing, the show is partway through airing its 21st season — and even though Ellen Pompeo, the star of the series who puts the Grey in "Grey's Anatomy" as Dr. Meredith Grey, left the show as a main cast member in its 19th season, it shows no signs of stopping.

Due to the fact that, in real life, hospitals change personnel with some regularity and new intern classes begin their residencies each summer, "Grey's Anatomy" is able to remain (relatively) fresh even with hundreds of episodes under its belt, introducing new intern classes every few years to keep the momentum going. Beyond that, though,...

Jessie T. Usher recently discussed Netflix's upcoming series Pulse, likening its feel to the early seasons of ABC's acclaimed, long-running medical drama series, Grey's Anatomy. Usher, most well-known for playing the superhero A-Train in the fan-favorite Prime Video series The Boys, will play the Emergency Medicine Resident Sam Elijah in Pulse.

Usher made the Grey's Anatomy comparison in an interview with Screen Rant. The actor refused to give away key story points but called the upcoming Netflix show sexy, romantic, and dramatic. Inspired by the book The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House by Kate Andersen Brower, the trailer for Rhimes' latest (seen below) makes it seem like Clue set in the White House. It opens inside the hallowed halls of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, where we meet Aduba's character of Cordelia Cupp, a consultant with the Metropolitan Police Department who's tasked with unraveling the mystery behind a dead body...

Derek's Devastating Death in 'Grey's Anatomy', Explained
Image
Grey's Anatomy has been going for almost two decades. The 21 seasons and nearly 450 episodes have introduced viewers to plenty of characters, but few have been as popular with fans as Dr. Derek Shepherd, who's been affectionately referred to as "McDreamy." Derek is a neurosurgeon who works at the same hospital as the main character, Meredith Grey, and even had a relationship and kids with her. Patrick Dempsey won over audiences' hearts as Derek Shepherd, and even received the honor of People Magazine's "Sexiest Man Alive" in 2023 after showing so much charisma in Grey's Anatomy.

The show controversially killed Derek Shepherd in episode 21 of season 11, titled "How to Save a Life." The episode is one of the lowest-rated episodes on IMDb, with a user rating of 5.6/10 with more than 3,000 reviews, mostly annoyed with how Derek was killed in the episode. However, McDreamy's death was a necessity, especially with situations in the background of the show's production.

Fan-Favorite Grey’s Anatomy Star Discusses Possible Return 7 Years Later
Image
Grey's Anatomy has seen many characters come and go during the course of its run, and among those who haven't been seen in a while is Martin Henderson's Dr. Nathan Riggs. Over seven years later, the actor has confirmed that he's open to the idea of returning as his fan-favorite character.

While speaking with Deadline to promote his series Virgin River, Henderson was asked about the possibility of returning to Grey's Anatomy. He teased that a return is possible, feeling that Grey's creator Shonda Rhimes would be supportive of a return of Dr. Riggs. It all comes down to scheduling, as Henderson is keeping pretty busy with his post-Grey's work.

A Complete Timeline of Meredith and Derek's Grey's Anatomy Relationship
Image
Grey’s Anatomy is one of the most beloved and longest-running TV shows created by Shonda Rhimes. The show’s 20th season recently dropped, and it’s hard not to appreciate the elements that endured throughout the show’s nearly two-decade run. In 2005, Grey’s Anatomy aired as a medical drama that could compete with other shows like ER, which Grey's has long since outlasted.

The show quickly shot into the spotlight and became a fan favorite because of its masterful blend of medicine and human experience. While Grey's highlights surgery and medical research, much of the focus belongs to the characters. As such, there's a never-ending stream of romances for fans to love. But one of them existed at the beginning.

Updated on December 11, 2024, by Jordan Iacobucci: Grey's Anatomy may have killed off Derek Shepherd years ago, but his legacy continues to live on in the iconic procedural series to this day.

Accused Season 2 Report Card: Flashes of Brilliance in a Sea of Mediocrity
Image
The second season of Accused was quite the experience.

The anticipated series returned with a studded and shortened season. While it made do with its eight episodes and strong cast, the overall conclusion is that the sophomore season was underwhelming and inconsistent.

It didn’t meet the same standards as the first season. But let’s get into all of that with our Accused Season 2 Report Card.

Best Episode – Accused Season 2 Episode 2: April’s Story (Steve Wilkie/Fox)

Taylor Schilling was fantastic as an overwhelmed, working wife and mother to a child with behavioral issues on Accused Season 2 Episode 2.

The hour was one many could resonate with as it all boiled down to having an awful day. Everything that could go wrong went wrong for April as work, family, and life demands probed at her at once.

Road Rage takes center stage, but the hour does a fantastic job...

Why Giacomo Gianniotti's Andrew DeLuca Left Grey's Anatomy
Image
It’s been 20 seasons since fans first saw Meredith Grey walk into Seattle Grace for the first time. Since then, it’s been a rollercoaster ride for the audience as they experienced their favorite characters being introduced and eventually killed off. For Grey’s Anatomy, there’s no such thing as a character who can’t die.

Several beloved characters have bit the dust either due to backstage drama or their characters simply reaching the end of the line story-wise. Dr. Andrew DeLuca was one such character who quickly became a fan-favorite in the famed medical drama. He also had one of the show's most tragic storylines, and his exit meant more than just lazily tying off a character arc.

Updated by Alex Roush on December 1, 2024: With over 20 seasons, Grey's Anatomy has a lot of overturn in its cast. Characters leave the series all the time, sometimes in tragic ways,...

'It Would Be Triggering': Grey's Anatomy Star Opens Up on Series Exit and Potential Return
Image
This story contains spoilers for Grey's Anatomy Season 21, Episode 8, titled "Drop It Like It's Hot."

The big character exits fans were warned about ahead of Season 21 of Grey's Anatomy are coming to be. Shortly after the departure of Jake Borelli's Levi Schmitt, Midori Francis would depart the following week, which saw Midori Francis in her final appearance as Dr. Mika Yasuda.

In an interview with Deadline, Francis opened up about her exit from Grey's Anatomy. The character's exit episode saw Mika returning after the automobile accident that resulted in the death of her sister, and the trauma endured has left the doctor unable to properly work. Ultimately, Mika decides to leave Grey Sloan, as "everything around me reminds me of her." It was a sad way to see the character go, though Francis is very happy with the storyline from a creative standpoint.

Why Did Alex Karev Leave Grey's Anatomy?
Image
Grey's Anatomy lost one of its original cast members in Season 16 when Justin Chambers left the series. While he was only one of several original stars to have departed the ABC medical drama, Chambers had put in more than a decade of work as Dr. Alex Karev. That meant his exit was shocking to fans, especially when they were told why the actor and Alex Karev were leaving.

Not only was it surprising that Justin Chambers would no longer be part of the Grey's Anatomy ensemble, but the storyline chosen for Alex Karev's departure also proved controversial. While the series is still considered one of the best romantic dramas on network television, digging into Alex's past with fellow doctor Izzie Stevens was not the sendoff many viewers were expecting. So why, exactly, did Justin Chambers leave Grey's Anatomy?

Image

Since the show first premiered in 2005, Grey's Anatomy has impressed fans with its promising assortment of characters. Not only are these cast members admirable surgeons, but they're also teeming with secrets and flaws, making for great television. As such, even though Grey's Anatomy has been criticized in recent years for overstaying its welcome on primetime television, many fans have stuck with the hit medical drama because of its selection of popular characters.

However, that wasn't the case for Alex Karev, one of the show's longest-running characters. Justin Chambers' Karev Return Comments Are Good For Jo's Grey's Anatomy's Season 21 Story
Image
Karev being an original Grey's Anatomy character makes his potential return more sought-after than others, but Justin Chambers comments against such a return 4 years after Karevs departure paint a better picture for Jos future. Chambers left Greys Anatomy as the show was in its 16th season, and while his character didnt have a tragic ending, Alex Karevs exit nonetheless was one of Greys Anatomys most controversial. Between his last appearance happening via voiceover and the fact he left those he considered his family at Grey Sloan by saying goodbye via letter, Karevs exit didnt reflect the characters steps forward.

Throughout the 16 Greys Anatomy seasons Karev was a part of, he went through one of the most radical character developments, going from someone selfish, sometimes unfair, and detached from his peers to being Merediths person once Cristina moved to Switzerland and someone who generally cared about others. Karev leaving Jo without...
