RC CATES.

There is something extraordinary about nine-time Emmy Award-winning Composer / Music Supervisor and Associate Director, RC Cates. An unparalleled team player with outstanding intuitive musical sensibility, he has worked as Music Supervisor and Composer on more than 2,500 episodes of both Daytime and Primetime television for nearly three decades. He brings this depth of experience to all his projects along with an innate understanding of music and an ability to compose notes that are honest, raw and provocative.

RC's passion for music developed early. He began playing guitar at age 12 and by 16 music was an intrinsic part of his soul. He was already playing the local LA club scene by 18 and soon toured internationally, making numerous television appearances with the band Entourage. He attended both the Dick Grove School of Music and then went on to study Guitar Arranging and Performance at the esteemed Musician's Institute. He would later round out his studies in Film and Television Scoring at UCLA and Berkley School of Music, advancing and cultivating his unique ability to infuse deep emotional clarity into the story.

In 1990, ABC named him Musical Supervisor for General Hospital where he remained until 2012. He mentored under legendary Gloria Monty where he learned and perfected the art of connecting music to picture the "Monty way." He soon became a contributing composer for the series under John and Tom Bahler. He was quickly named the SUPERVISING MUSICAL DIRECTOR for GH, while still composing for the series under the guidance of Martin Dacich (future composer for NBC series, E.R., and Third Watch). RC credits Davich for furthering his musical expertise, stating, "Marty's guidance was essential to my growth as a composer." During that period RC worked closely with Ricky Martin who was then a cast member and whose character regularly performed songs live on the show. ABC created the GH spin-off Port Charles in 1997 and asked RC to head up its music even while continuing to head the music for GH. He was also named co-composer for the new show which had a vampire rock star as part of its story-line. RC co-wrote all the songs for this fictitious band, The Stephen Clay Project, including two Emmy nominated songs in 2003. These songs, "Hey Sister" and "The Gift" were both nominated for Best Original Song.

A dynamic career marked by diversity, RC continued to add to his long list of credits. By 1994 he co-composed with Paul Antonelli the score to Prince's film, 3 Chains O' Gold. One year later he was again hired to compose for Prince for the follow-up film, The Beautiful Experience. In 2000, he produced and co-wrote the album "Adam" by Day Six and in 2004 he co-wrote new opening titles for GH. In 2007, he added Primetime Drama to this list when ABC created "Night Shift," another General Hospital spin-off. He was Night Shift's Series Composer and Supervising Music Director for both seasons while maintaining his indispensable positions at GH. In 2013, RC joined CBS's The Young and The Restless as composer and music supervisor where he continues to work currently.

Throughout his 30-year outstanding career, RC composed for the following series: As The World Turns, All My Children, General Hospital, Night Shift, Port Charles, Sunset Beach and more recently, ABC's "What Would You Do?" and CBS's "The Players Club", and currently "The Young and The Restless"
