    Having written several well-liked scripts for Alfred Hitchcock's TV series, he was hired by Hitchcock to adapt Robert Bloch's novel, "Psycho". His first draft was, however, disliked by Hitchcock, who immediately replaced him with another TV writer, Joseph Stefano. Cavanagh continued to write for Hitchcock's TV show, nonetheless.
