Coastal Review: Intimate Performances, Tepid Momentum
Image
Neil Young: Coastal, directed by Daryl Hannah, received a one-night‐only theatrical release on April 17, 2025, with select weekend screenings thereafter. The film documents Young’s July 2023 solo tour of outdoor arenas along the U.S. West Coast—his first live performances in four years and his first since the Covid‐19 hiatus.

At 79, Young stands as a lodestar of North American rock culture, and this documentary captures that moment when a storied artist returns to bare‐bones touring without a backing band.

In global terms, folk‐rock icons from Johnny Cash to Joni Mitchell have travelled beyond their national roots, resonating with international audiences who find universality in acoustic storytelling. Coastal situates Young within this lineage: stripped of layered studio production, he relies on plain guitar and harmonica, his vocals cutting through open air.

For viewers accustomed to polished concert films—whether from Bollywood’s elaborate musical numbers or Japan...

Shaboozey Defends Megan Moroney After “Hateful Comments” Following Ama’s Side-Eye: “Let’s Not Twist The Message”
Image
Shaboozey is clarifying his viral reaction at the 2025 American Music Awards and noting it had nothing to do with his co-presenter Megan Moroney.

The country star presented the Favorite Country Duo or Group category at the AMAs in Las Vegas on Monday night alongside Moroney.

Reading off the teleprompter, Moroney said the award they were going to present had been awarded to The Carter Family, “who basically invented country music.” This remark prompted a side-eye from Shaboozey, which turned him into an instant meme.

Following the viral AMAs moment, Shaboozey took to Moroney’s latest Instagram post to clear up that the shade was not to her, as she didn’t write the script she read at the award show.

“Just want to clear something up: my reaction at the AMAs had nothing to do with Megan Moroney!” Shaboozey wrote. “She’s an incredibly talented, hard-working artist who’s doing amazing things for country music,...

Shaboozey Responds to Viral Reaction to Megan Maroney at AMAs 2025
Image
Shaboozey is speaking out after that viral moment during the 2025 American Music Awards.

On Monday (May 26), the 30-year-old “Tipsy (A Bar Song)” singer and Megan Moroney presented the Favorite Country Duo or Group award winner at the ceremony.

“Country music has been an important part of Ama history,” he said. “The very first year of this show, the award for Favorite Male Country Artist went to the great Charley Pride.”

“That same year, Favorite Female Artist went to Lynn Anderson. And this award went to the Carter family, who basically invented country music,” Megan read off the teleprompter, which prompted Shaboozey to side-eye the comment.

Keep reading to find out more…

He let out a brief laugh before introducing the “very impressive” nominees for the Favorite Country Duo or Group category, as the reaction went viral on social media.

The next day (May 27), Shaboozey seemingly addressed the viral moment.

Amas 2025: Shaboozey Goes Viral For Reaction To Megan Moroney Saying The Carter Family Invented Country Music
Image
Shaboozey became a meme following a viral moment at the 2025 American Music Awards.

The country star took the stage in Las Vegas next to fellow artist Megan Moroney to present the Favorite Country Duo or Group category.

Shaboozey started by remembering that country music has been a part of the AMAs’ history, recalling that the award for Favorite Male Country Artist went to Charley Pride.

Things got awkward when Moroney took a turn reading off the teleprompter, saying, “That same year, Favorite Female Artist went to Lynn Anderson, and this award [Favorite Country Duo or Group] went to the Carter family, who basically invented country music.”

Shaboozey paused to process Moroney’s words and let out a laugh before continuing to present the nominees in the category, which was ultimately won by the duo Dan and Shay.

Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Mick Jagger Teaming On Biopic Of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, The Godmother Of Rock And Roll, For Live Nation Productions
Image
Exclusive: Live Nation Productions has tapped Oscar nominee Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (Nickel Boys) to pen a feature centered on “Godmother of Rock and Roll” Sister Rosetta Tharpe, with rock legend Mick Jagger producing.

Hailing from Tribeca Studios, Jagged Films, and Inaudible Productions, the project has the participation of Tharpe’s estate, which has granted rights to her music catalogue. In the making of the film, the producers will also draw on Gayle Wald’s definitive biography Shout, Sister, Shout!: The Untold Story of Rock-and-Roll Trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe, to which they’ve secured exclusive rights.

Rising to fame in the ’30s and ’40s, Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a trailblazing gospel guitarist and singer whose fearless transgressions of musical boundaries laid the foundation for rock and roll. An artist who broke barriers as a Black woman in music, she influenced countless legends with her music — among them, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash,...

This Is the Religious Icon Conan O’Brien Is Named After
Image
No, Conan O’Brien isn’t named after the famous Barbarian.

But what about the notorious bacteria? A listener wrote in to the Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast trying to validate that particular theory. “I love you guys so much,” they wrote. “Have you heard about Conan the Bacterium? This is a real bacterium that can survive radiation.”

“What if that’s what you’re named after?” wondered podcast cohost Sona Movsesian. “Because your dad’s a microbiologist.”

Nope, that’s not how the whole naming thing went down, according to O’Brien. In real life, he actually went without a name for a short while as his parents couldn’t land on the perfect monicker. “They want the name right away,” O’Brien said. “And my dad said he wanted to go to the medical school library and look. He didn’t have the name yet, and he...

Image
Exclusive: Kenneth Branagh, Hiam Abbass (Succession) and Boyd Holbrook (A Complete Unknown) are teaming on a feature adaptation of 2012 New Yorker article Atonement.

Atonement, which rolls cameras this month in Jordon and Texas, is about a troubled marine who seeks to reconcile with the survivors of an Iraqi family he and his unit fired on back in 2003.

The movie is the feature directorial debut of Reed Van Dyk, who was Oscar-nominated for his 2017 short DeKalb Elementary. Based on a 911 call, that pic followed a gunman who enters an elementary school and encounters a compassionate employee.

The ensemble trio lead the movie that comes 13 years after Dexter Filkins’ resonant New Yorker article, which was also titled Atonement. Delving into the psychological and emotional aftermath of the Iraq War on both Iraqi civilians and U.S. Marines, it centered on Lu Lobello, haunted by memories of a deadly incident in Baghdad, whose journey...

Things for 9-1-1: Nashville are heating up. Today, ABC announced that the new Ryan Murphy procedural would be premiering this fall as part of the 2025-2026 lineup, right alongside the flagship 9-1-1. The series remains on Thursday with Nashville joining the schedule. The new Chris O'Donnell-led procedural also has a teaser featuring a burning Gibson semi-acoustic guitar (since there's a Gibson Guitar factory right in the actual Nashville) with a rendition of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" sung by 9-1-1: Nashville cast member LeAnn Rimes. Final Destination: Bloodlines Review: Silly, Bloody Rollercoaster Ride Delivers Franchise Highs
Image
As legacy horror franchises attempt to worm their way back into the public imagination with largely unsatisfying reboot-sequel hybrids, bringing characters old and new together, alarm bells should have been ringing at the prospect of a new Final Destination. With the exception of the second movie, where Ali Larter’s protagonist returned to co-lead and gave a crash course on how to cheat death, continuity has been restricted to Tony Todd cameos, the franchise’s overarching premise so easily adaptable that it didn’t exactly need to exist in a shared universe. Of course it did––the twist ending to the fifth installment, which revealed we’d been watching a stealth prequel to the first all along, was the biggest reminder––but more so than any other slasher, here was a long-running series where any entry could successfully function as its own standalone beast. The idea of transforming the series...

John Mulaney, Rock Hall of Fame Enthusiast, Breaks Down This Year’s Class — and Snubs!

John Mulaney has learned a few things about life from the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This sounds like the setup for a joke. But the comedian, late-night host, and low-key music obsessive has long been fascinated with the Cleveland institution, the artists it deems worthy for inclusion (or continually snubs), and especially the annual induction ceremony that can reunite bands, rekindle old feuds, and cause music nerds to argue endlessly.

For example, to the yearly batch of inducted artists who seem deeply uncomfortable with the idea of the ceremony,...

“Colby’s death is so powerful because..”: Why Did Taylor Sheridan Kill Colby, Yellowstone Director’s Honest Verdict
Image
“Ain’t no grave can hold my body down…” crooned Johnny Cash, but clearly, Colby didn’t get the memo. One minute he was wrangling horses with his signature swagger, the next… wham!, hoof to the chest, lights out. As Yellowstone trudged through its curtain-closing season in December 2024, the last thing fans expected was Colby—sweet, steady Colby—to get taken out like a fly at a rodeo.

Taylor Sheridan, a man with a pen as sharp as a branding iron, didn’t just yank the reins on John Dutton’s dynasty; he kicked the emotional beehive wide open. Colby’s death was an oddly quiet gunshot in a season packed with explosives. But maybe, just maybe, that was the point. And as director Christina Voros puts it, “It happens in a split-second.” Just like that… Colby wass gone.

Why did Taylor Sheridan kill Colby? Christina Voros explains his sudden exit Richards as Colby.

Revenge of the Remakes: Horror Reboots That Actually Worked
Image
Horror remakes get a bad rap – and let’s be honest, they often deserve it. For every clever reimagining, we’ve sat through a dozen limp reboots that sucked the life (and the scares) right out of the original. But sometimes, a remake comes along that doesn’t just cash in on nostalgia; it sharpens, reinvents, or even surpasses the source material.

With fresh remakes like Wolf Man (2025) and Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming Frankenstein reboot lighting up horror headlines, now’s the perfect time to revisit the remakes that proved this subgenre can deliver more than lazy copy-paste thrills. Here’s our list of horror reboots and remakes that earned their place in the genre’s blood-soaked hall of fame.

Horror Remakes That Actually Worked The Thing (1982)

John Carpenter’s The Thing often gets cited as one of the best horror remakes ever made… and for good reason. While...

Only 1 person could get Eddie Murphy to go to an SNL afterparty
Image
Few stars in entertainment were as bright as Eddie Murphy during the 1980s. It also meant the Saturday Night Live star did things his own way, including avoiding SNL afterparties. That is, until one music superstar convinced Murphy to go.

Saturday Night Live afterparties are legendary and a key aspect of the show's 50-year history. Countless stories have been shared (or alluded to) over the years as cast members gave a behind-the-scenes look at how SNL blows off steam after a show.

One would think Eddie Murphy stood at the center of SNL's parties during the '80s. But that wasn't the case, as Murphy explained during a visit to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

"I was 19, and it's 1980, '81," Murphy said. "So I was the only Black person up there, and I was the only teenager up there. So I was like, 'I don't want to party with them!

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds Level Up at Brooklyn Arena Rock Concert
Image
Look at him now: Nick Cave’s transforming. He’s vibrating. He’s glowing. He’s flying. Look at him now.

At Thursday night’s Bad Seeds concert at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, Cave proved to a U.S. audience what Europe has known for decades: that he — rock’s gothic poet laureate, master of emotional intimacy, and, as a side hustle, introspective advice columnist — is indeed an arena rocker. He’s attempted that feat in the States before, staging a brilliant and occasionally heartrending concert at the same venue...

Doge Went After Arts Funding. Music Docs Are Paying the Price
Image
For documentary filmmaker Randall MacLowry, the Black folk hero John Henry was a natural subject. The mythical 19th-century figure who helped install railroad tracks by way of his sledgehammer skills, Henry has been saluted in literature (Colson Whitehead’s John Henry Days), dance (part of a program by the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater), and especially music. Bob Dylan named-checked Henry in a 2015 speech, Jason Isbell wrote a song about him (“The Day John Henry Died”) during his Drive-By Truckers days, and Johnny Cash recorded “The Legend of John Henry’s Hammer.

Glen Campbell Biopic Director Explains the Casting & Story
Image
James Keach has led a very interesting life, and has orbited the lives of other very interesting people. He co-wrote and also starred in The Long Riders (along with his brother Stacy), a classic Western film which caught the eye of Johnny Cash. Cash and June Carter became close friends with Keach, who would go on to develop and produce the Cash biopic Walk the Line. He wasn't the only iconic musician Keach befriended; iconic artist Glen Campbell became a good friend of James Keach, and also worked with him on a movie. Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me is a beautiful, Oscar-nominated documentary about Campbell's "Goodbye Tour" and the musician's life-ending Alzheimer's disease. Now, Keach is giving Campbell the Walk the Line treatment with an intimate biographical drama.

Why Jim Carrey Backed Out Of A Poorly Received Episode Of The Simpsons
Image
Most folks agree that "The Simpsons" hasn't been very good for a long time. In recent years, you may have heard that "The Simpsons" is good again or that modern seasons have actually delivered some underrated "Simpsons" episodes. But the reality is that this is a show which has been running for a full 36 seasons at this point, and whatever spin you try to put on it, something went fundamentally awry long ago.

Just when this happened remains a point of debate among fans. There are those that swear "The Simpsons" was only good for a few seasons somewhat early in its run, but most will agree the golden years were somewhere between the third and tenth seasons. Others, this writer included, maintain that the series was good right up until the 12th season, but if this handy chart showing IMDb rankings for each season of "The Simpsons" is anything to go by,...

“Can’t we just keep them all?” Carrie Underwood asked during Monday’s American Idol, which marked her first time suffering through Hollywood Week from the other side of the judges’ table.

And her stress was completely understandable. Having to narrow 144 singers down to 62 would have anyone crying out for Jesus to take the wheel — not to mention the added pressure that came up with the return of the Idol “Arena,” a musical lion’s den in which each contestant performed at random while surrounded by their entire competition.

John Carpenter on Loving Los Angeles, Making Music and If He’ll Direct Again
Image
Anyone who’s seen John Carpenter’s 1996 sequel “Escape From L.A.” knows that, in the past, the filmmaker’s feelings about the City of Angels have been mixed, to put it mildly. They’re epitomized by a scene in which Snake Plissken (Kurt Russell) is enjoying a brief moment of relative peace in the earthquake-ravaged ruins of the city, after almost having his body parted out by the Surgeon General of Beverly Hills (Bruce Campbell), when his running mate of the moment (Valeria Golino) looks at him and observes, “Once you figure out this place, it’s really not so bad.” She is immediately shot in the back..

While Carpenter has occasionally been metaphorically wounded by the slings, arrows and bullets of the city’s entertainment-industrial complex, he’s managed to survive. And in the lead-up to receiving his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on April 3, he’s...

Lizzo to Star as Sister Rosetta Tharpe in Amazon's 'Rosetta'
Image
Multiplatinum recording artist Lizzo is gearing up to play the role of a lifetime. The Grammy award-winning artist will tell the story of Sister Rosetta Tharpe in Amazon MGM Studios's Rosetta. The "Truth Hurts" singer will play Thorpe and produce the project in development with Kevin Beisler, Significant Productions' Nina Yang Bongiovi, and Academy Award-winning actor Forest Whitaker.

Dubbed the "Godmother of Rock N' Roll," Sister Rosetta Tharpe was the first great recording star of gospel music, garnering attention from Rhythm & Blues and Rock N' Roll audiences after gaining popularity in the 1930s and 1940s. A crucial part of her early success came from her powerful voice and ability to combine genres effortlessly while playing the guitar with her own unique techniques. Tharpe influenced musical legends such as Tina Turner, Elvis Presley, Little Richard, Johnny Cash, and more.

Lizzo is set to play rock & roll pioneer Sister Rosetta Tharpe in a new film in development by Amazon MGM Studios, per Deadline.

A brilliant guitarist and singer, Tharpe was a major influence to scores of rockers, including Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Johnny Cash, and Bob Dylan. “A queer black woman from Arkansas who shredded on electric guitar, belted praises both to God and secular pleasures, and broke the color line touring with white singers, she was gospel’s first superstar, and she most assuredly rocked,” wrote Rolling Stone...

Lizzo to trade her flute for an electric guitar to play Rock ‘n’ Roll pioneer Rosetta Tharpe in a biopic for Amazon MGM Studios
Image
It’s about damn time! Someone is finally making a movie about Rosetta Tharpe, the gospel singer who transcended the art form to become one of Rock’ n’ Roll and R&b’s most influential pioneers. The biographical project hails from Amazon MGM Studios, with four-time Grammy award winner Lizzo (Hustlers) shredding the electric guitar to play Rosetta.

In addition to her starring role, Lizzo is producing the film with Kevin Beisler, Significant Productions’ Nina Yang Bongiovi, and Forest Whitaker. Natalie Chaidez and Kwynn Perry are writing the script, focusing on the life and times of Rosetta Tharpe, the mother of Rock’ n’ Roll. Simply put, there would be no Rock ‘n’ Roll without Tharpe’s influence. She inspired icons like Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and innumerable others to set fire to strings and give their souls to the musical art form.

‘Opry 100: A Live Celebration’: The Country Music Special’s Best Moments
Image
It’s probably safe to say that “Opry 100: A Live Celebration” is the first three-hour special in the history of country music television to feature nothing but first-rate performances over the course of an entire prime-time block. But then, producers for the show did have a built-in programming advantage in celebrating the 100th anniversary of Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry, with theoretically a century of picks to draw upon and not just a year’s worth of recent radio fodder. That allowed for a whole evening of classic country, classily interpreted, without any freshman artists running laps around the stage in cutoffs dodging fireworks.

Even on a no-skips night, certain segments stood out. Here are 10 highlights from Wednesday night’s NBC/Peacock special:
