Daughter of Francisco Manuel Carvalhal and wife Aida de Almeida Desterro Retto, daughter of Eurico Retto (b. 8 March 1902) and wife Maria Jovita Metelo de Almeida Desterro (b. 12 March 1912), maternal descendant of the Beira noble family Metelo Corte-Real of Pinhel.

Frequented the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon between 1985 and 1990.
