M.A.L. : Mutant aquatique en liberté (1989)
DeepStar Six (1989) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
M.A.L. : Mutant aquatique en liberté (1989)
The episode of The Black Sheep covering DeepStar Six was Written, Narrated, and Edited by Lance Vlcek, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

Sean S. Cunningham will always be primarily remembered for directing the original Friday the 13th, but he has taken the helm of some other movies that are worth checking out, like 1985’s The New Kids and the subject of the latest entry in our Black Sheep video series, DeepStar Six (get it Here).

Released in 1989 and often compared to its fellow ’89 release Leviathan (which has also gotten the Black Sheep treatment), DeepStar Six was scripted Geoff Miller and Lewis Abernathy – which is interesting because movies like Leviathan and DeepStar Six exist because James Cameron’s The Abyss was coming out the same year, and Abernathy and Cameron are pals. Abernathy even had an acting role in Titanic.

Starring Greg Evigan,...

Bill Burr on Friday the 13th and why he stopped watching horror movies
Image
Stand-up comedian / actor Bill Burr just made his feature directorial debut with the Netflix-released comedy Old Dads (you can read the JoBlo review at This Link), which is cool and all… but here on Arrow in the Head, the horror side of the JoBlo Network, we’re more interested in hearing Burr’s opinions on horror films. That’s why it caught our attention when YouTuber James Whale Bake Sale made a video to go with a clip from Burr’s podcast Monday Morning Podcast in which the comedian discusses the horror classic Friday the 13th – and goes on to explain why he stopped watching horror movies.

The video can be seen at the bottom of this article, and over the course of its five minutes he admits that the final jump scare in Friday the 13th really did scare the hell out of him, says that the franchise...

Friday the 13th is getting a 4K steelbook release in October
Image
Three years ago, Paramount Pictures gave the 1980 classic Friday the 13th (watch it Here) a Blu-ray steelbook release to celebrate the film’s 40th anniversary. Now the folks at Fridaythe13thFranchise have caught word that Paramount is set to give the film a 4K steelbook release on October 10th – three days before an actual Friday the 13th rolls around on the calendar. They even got their hands on a picture of the 4K steelbook, and you can check it out at the bottom of this article.

It looks like this steelbook will be using the same artwork as the Blu-ray steelbook, but it will also come with a slipcover featuring artwork that was used for Waxwork Records’ vinyl release of the film’s score.

Directed by Sean S. Cunningham from a screenplay by Victor Miller, Friday the 13th has the following synopsis: Crystal Lake’s history of murder doesn’t...

DeepStar Six
Image
This big, expensive and well-produced action-suspense Sci-fi epic mostly delivers on its promise to be Aliens at the bottom of the sea. At heart it’s a 1950s pulse-pounder with a bigger monster, a zillion times the budget and a script that does everything but make us care. We appreciate the likable characters but it’s too easy to predict who will ‘get it’ next. The realism factor is not bad at all, although the undersea explorer video training sessions should have given ‘how not to crack up under stress’ more emphasis. And can’t anybody properly mind those pesky nuclear bombs?

Isaac Bashevis Singer
Film review: 'Aaron's Magic Village'
Isaac Bashevis Singer
There's nothing particularly magic about "Aaron's Magic Village", an artfully animated but weakly told tale based on Isaac Bashevis Singer's "Stories for Children".

Despite its generous ethnic seasonings, including song lyrics by Sheldon Harnick ("Fiddler on the Roof") and enthusiastic, Yiddish-peppered narration by Fyvush Finkel, the family-oriented animation feature (originally dubbed the catchier "The Real Shlemiel") is curiously bland, unsatisfying fare.

Sneaking in a limited theatrical release before its video arrival via Columbia TriStar, the picture lacks the element of universal appeal that would have enabled it to travel beyond a regigious market.

Recently orphaned, 10-year-old Aaron (ably voiced by young "All My Children" veteran Tommy Michaels) and his trusty companion Zlateh the Goat (Tovah Feldshuh) goes to live with his Aunt Sarah (Feldshuh again) and Uncle Shlemiel (Ronn Carroll) in the Polish village of Chelm.

Upon his arrival, Aaron discovers that his uncle, like the majority of Chelm's dumb and dumber denizens, isn't exactly the brightest bulb on the, uh, Hanukkah bush. As a result, it's up to the youngster to stop the evil Sorcerer (Steve Newman) and his gigantic clay-and-water Golem from destroying the world, starting with Chelm.

Of course, Aaron ultimately succeeds in his mission, with a little help from good old Zlateh and the Lantuch (Ivy Austin), a centuries-old imp in the early stages of Alzheimer's.

Directed by Paris-based animator and "Sesame Street" vet Albert Hanan Kaminski, the film is visually rich in background detail -- a computer-generated sequence involving the Golem's destruction of Chelm is particularly impressive -- but the stitched-together Singer stories (by Kaminski and Jacqueline Galia Benousilio) feel choppy and unsubstantial.

On the audio end, the assorted vocal talent is in fine form, with Finkel delivering his wall-to-wall narration with sing-song gusto.

Speaking of songs, those written by Harnick and composing legend Michel Legrand (who previously collaborated on "Umbrellas of Cherbourg") are likable and gently melodic but ultimately forgettable. It's far more likely the kiddies will be tapping their feet out of restlessness.

Elizabeth McGovern
Film review: 'Summer of Ben Tyler'
Elizabeth McGovern
In a small Deep South town in 1942, "The Summer of Ben Tyler" was a tough summer -- even if liberating.

Another of those involving Hallmark Hall of Fame tales on CBS, "Tyler" covers two anguishing problems, at least for this town at that time.

One is the adoption of a newly orphaned black boy, Ben (Charles Mattocks), by the loving and white Rayburns (James Woods and Elizabeth McGovern). The other is the domination of the town in general, and lawyer Temple Rayburn specifically, by slyly munificent Spencer Maitland (Len Cariou), owner of town employer Maitland Mills.

The town, at least the gossipy old marms, fuss over Ben's presence in the Rayburn home; Maitland, desiring to extend his power base, urges Rayburn to run for the state Senate and pays the bills. But then Maitland's drunken son kills a black woman in a rainy hit-and-run and looks to get away with it, enveloping Rayburn in moral dilemmas.

It's a warm, wise script by Alabama native Robert Inman, and director Arthur Allan Seidelman has a solid cast, including the can-do-everything Woods as the laid-back lawyer and Cariou as the deceptive town tyrant. Two newcomers deserve special mention: Julia McIlvaine as the Rayburns' spunky daughter and Mattocks as the mildly retarded Ben, who is "a fine fellow" and wise well beyond his supposed capabilities.
