The final season ofStranger Things has yet to air, but Caleb McLaughlin is already ready to bring audiences a new kind of spooky story. This time it's a thrilling Audible Original, Sacrilege: Curse of the Mbirwi, which just released today and marks the young but prolific actor's audio drama debut. Created by Nyasha Hatendi (Casual), the story follows the Wallace family as they travel to a luxury game reserve in Zimbabwe, where spirits demand respect and take revenge when it's not given.

McLaughlin voices Dashon Wallace, a teen who goes from unwilling to participate in his family vacation to unwittingly desecrating hallowed ground. His careless actions awaken an entity known as the Mbirwi, leading to a clash of supernatural horrors and family trauma that lasts a gripping 3 hours and 48 minutes — all presented in Dolby Atmos surround sound. Where Was Jake Gyllenhaal's Road House Filmed? Every Major Location, Explained
Image
Of all the legacy sequels and remakes to spring up in the age where IP is king, the "Road House" remake was one of the most underwhelming. Jake Gyllenhaal was really the only reason to watch the anemic remake of "Road House," which arrived on Amazon's Prime Video service back in March 21, 2024 following its South by Southwest premiere earlier in the month. The film left much to be desired, adding yet another facet to the argument against Hollywood's obsession with regurgitating and repackaging existing material.

In comparison to the original, the "Road House" remake took a lot of creative liberties that separate it from the 1989 film, and not necessarily in a good way. For starters, the story plays out in the Florida Keys rather than Missouri. And instead of Patrick Swayze's New York City bouncer, Gyllenhaal plays a UFC fighter who's lured to the titular bar by owner Frankie...

Kamala Harris Tries To Ensure That John Kelly’s “Fascist” Comments About Donald Trump Break Through The Media Clutter
Image
Updated, with Trump response: All three major cable news networks carried Vice President Kamala Harris’ brief remarks Wednesday on the latest twist in the presidential campaign: John Kelly, Donald Trump’s former chief of staff, going on record via audio to say that the Republican nominee “certainly falls into the general definition of fascist.”

“Donald Trump is increasingly unhinged and unstable, and in a second term, people like John Kelly would not be there to be the guardrail against his propensities and actions,” Harris said.

“So the bottom line is this: We know what Donald Trump wants. He wants unchecked power.”

Harris’ remarks were a late addition to her schedule following Tuesday evening reports in the New York Times and The Atlantic.

Kelly gave audio remarks to the Times that were posted to the Times website, and they were covered on network morning shows and other major media, albeit not...

‘Road House’ Is Officially Getting a Sequel, Jake Gyllenhaal Set to Return
Image
In 1989, the legendary Patrick Swayze starred in the original Road House movie. The movie has achieved cult status in the meantime, and while the 2006 sequel was panned by critics, Amazon decided to remake the movie, which was released earlier this year to mixed reviews, but it seems that the fans were more than satisfied, as a sequel has been announced by Amazon, with the first film’s main star, Jake Gyllenhaal set to reprise his role in the sequel. We’re certain that this sequel won’t repeat the failure of the original sequel, but it remains to be seen how well Amazon is going to execute it.

The first movie was released in March 2024, and the critics on Rotten Tomatoes have agreed that “Road House updates a cult classic for a new generation, happily replicating the original’s emphasis on cheesy brawn over narrative brains.”

The movie wasn’t all too bad,...

‘Road House’ Review: More Fizzle Than Sizzle In Doug Liman’s Remake Of An Action Classic – SXSW
Image
In the era of action films like John Wick, the bar for adrenaline-fueled entertainment has been set high. And when it comes to remakes, there exists a fine line that must be walked between regard for the original and fresh perspectives.

Doug Liman directs the remake of the classic1989 film Road House, which premiered Friday in the Headliner category at SXSW 2024. Unfortunately, this remake starring Jake Gyllenhaal delivers a lackluster and ultimately unnecessary retread of the original Patrick Swayze-starring film.

Central to the movie is Gyllenhaal’s Dalton, a former UFC brawler grappling with his past. Struggling to get by on his reputation, Dalton catches the eye of Frankie (Jessica Williams), who owns a roadhouse in the picturesque Florida Keys. She recruits him as her new bouncer, aiming to protect her cherished establishment from a ruthless gang under the command of the local criminal overlord, Brandt (Billy Magnussen).

Despite being outnumbered,...

The first episode of The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live ends with the moment that The Walking Dead fans have long been waiting for.

After Rick Grimes’ (Andrew Lincoln) helicopter is shot out of the sky, he battles his attackers on the ground only to be bested by a superior foe. Said foe removes Rick’s Crm-issued helmet only to be taken aback by what they see. That’s because Rick’s would-be killer is none other than his wife Michonne (Danai Gurira). For the first time since Rick exited the flagship series in 2018, two of The Walking Dead‘s most important characters are finally back together.

‘Road House’ Skipped Theaters in Exchange for a Bigger Budget — Report
Image
Things are getting rowdy behind the scenes at “Road House.”

On Wednesday, Variety reported that the new “Road House” could have avoided a streaming debut, but before production began Amazon gave “the filmmakers and (star Jake) Gyllenhaal” a choice: $60 million budget and theatrical; $85 million and streaming. They chose the latter.

“The filmmakers” presumably refers to director Doug Liman and producer Joel Silver.

“They all took the money,” a source told Variety.

Amazon declined comment on this story, as did a rep for Liman. Reps for Gyllenhaal and Silver did not immediately respond to IndieWire’s request for comment.

A bigger budget typically means a larger upfront payday for the filmmakers and their star(s). Without a theatrical run, those principals won’t see nearly as much on the back end. The best of both worlds would be getting more upfront money and then turning in such an undeniable blockbuster that...

Madam C.J. Walker True Story: What Netflix's Self-Made Changed
Image
"Self Made" takes some liberties with the true story of Madam C.J. Walker, including the portrayal of Addie Monroe as a villain when she was actually an equally successful entrepreneur. The series inaccurately depicts Madam C.J. Walker's marriage to C.J. Walker, omitting their time in Denver and their eventual divorce before she moved to Indianapolis and built her factory. While there were no organized protests by sales agents in real life, they did present Madam C.J. Walker with a petition expressing concerns about the placement of her products in drugstores, causing a decline in their own sales.

Netflix's Self Made tells the true story of Madam C.J. Walker, but not everything in the four-part, limited-run series really happened. Based on the biography On Her Own Ground written by her great-great-granddaughter A'Lelia Bundles, the miniseries does take some liberties with reality. In real life, Madam C.J.

‘Snowfall’: Damson Idris & Dave Andron Break Down Series Finale; Tribute John Singleton
Image
Spoiler Alert: The following story reveals major plot points from tonight’s series finale of FX’s Snowfall.

After 6 seasons, FX’s hit drama series Snowfall said its final goodbye tonight, and while most of what transpired was somewhat expected, seeing a promising life end in poverty and despair is absolutely heartbreaking.

Viewers have been on a journey with Franklin Saint (Damson Idris), seeing his highs and lows and cheering him on no matter what he’s gotten himself into. But money and power tend to change people, especially when said fortune comes from criminal activities. In the end, Franklin is left with no family and friends to speak of—except his day one Leon Simmons (Isaiah John)—a shadow of himself resembling his father Alton Williams (Kevin Carroll) at his lowest in Season 1, drunk and destitute.

“His final moments were incredibly challenging. There was a fatherhood connection there, which...

Everyone involved with Snowfall told us that the series wouldn’t end well. No one consumed by the show’s crescendoing tension could expect anything but tragedy.

Few, if any, outlaws ever got away scot-free. And, even with the boundless capabilities of historical fiction, neither could Damson Idris’s Franklin Saint. Many Snowfall fans anticipated the series concluding with him being whisked away by the CIA, or killed at the hands of his Aunt Louie (Angela Lewis) — if not one of the many people whose lives he’d ruined en...

Now, in "Snowfall"'s penultimate episode, infamous foe Teddy (Carter Hudson) has suffered his own tragic fate as his heinous actions have finally caught up to him.

As many "Snowfall" fans know, Teddy has been instrumental to Franklin's drug operation ever since the latter traded in his college textbooks for a kingpin crown in season one. The former CIA operative - who's been running an...

‘American Gigolo,’ ‘Let the Right One In’ Canceled at Showtime Ahead of Paramount+ Merger
Image
Ahead of the Showtime and Paramount+ merger, Paramount Global is cleaning house. “American Gigolo” and “Let the Right One In,” two drama series that premiered last year, have been canceled at the channel, IndieWire has confirmed.

In addition, Showtime will no longer be proceeding with the series “Three Women,” starring Shailene Woodley, Betty Gilpin, DeWanda Wise, and Gabrielle Creevy. The series, which finished principal production, will be shopped to other outlets, and “American Gigolo” and “Let the Right One In” are also reportedly being shopped.

Paramount Global announced the integration of Showtime into Paramount+ across both streaming and linear television on January 30, revealing it will occur “later this year.” Rather than just offering Showtime on the Paramount+ app, Showtime Ott and Showtime linear will be rebranded to “Paramount+ with Showtime,” and the Showtime Ott and Anytime apps will be shut down, IndieWire is told. Showtime was previously made available on...

Showtime Cancels “Let the Right One In” as the Network Gets Folded into Paramount+
Demián Bichir in Let the Right One In (2022)
After just one season that aired late last year, Showtime has already made the decision to cancel the horror series “Let the Right One In,” Deadline is reporting this afternoon.

Tomorrow Studios, Deadline notes, will be shopping the series to other platforms. In other words, “Let the Right One In” could eventually come back to life on another platform.

Deadline adds to the story, “Paramount Global just announced that Showtime will be integrated into Paramount+ across both streaming and linear later this year.”

“Let the Right One In” is a victim of this impending merger, the site notes.

A new adaptation of John Ajvide Lindqvist’s novel, which became Swedish movie Let the Right One In in 2008 and then American remake Let Me In a couple years later, Showtime‘s “Let the Right One In” began streaming in time for Halloween on Friday, October 7, 2022.

‘Three Women’ Shelved, ‘Let the Right One In’ and ‘American Gigolo’ Canceled as Showtime Folds Into Paramount+
Image
Though production on the Shailene Woodley-led drama “Three Women” has already been completed, the series will no longer premiere on Showtime, which has also decided not to renew “Let the Right One In” and “American Gigolo.” The three series are the first known casualties as Paramount moves the Showtime brand moves under the purview of Paramount+ and reprioritizes its content.

Paramount CEO Bob Bakish announced on Monday that Showtime’s cable network would be renamed to “Paramount+ With Showtime” while its streaming service would collapse into Paramount+, noting that the company “will divert investment away from areas that are underperforming and that account for less than 10 of our views. We have already begun conversations with our production partners about what content makes sense moving forward and which shows have franchise potential.”

Adapted from Lisa Taddeo’s novel of the same name, “Three Women” landed at Showtime after a competitive bidding war.

Jake Gyllenhaal & Conor McGregor Lead Road House Remake In New Images
Image
Road House images reveal the first look at Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor in the upcoming remake. Real progress came in November 2021 when Gyllenhaal was cast to lead a Road House reboot with McGregor, a former UFC champion making his acting debut, joining later.

Now, the first look at the two stars has arrived. Shared by McGregor and FanSided’s Amy Kaplan on Twitter, an array of images show Gyllenhaal and the former UFC champion behind the scenes of the Road House remake, which began filming in the Dominican Republic this past summer. Check out...

Image
The need and desire to see Black, Brown, Asian and Indigenous people on screen has yet to be completely fulfilled by Hollywood, but there has been a recent uptick in Aapi and Bipoc representation on screen. According to a 2021 Nielsen study titled “Being Seen on Screen,” data from the 2021 to 2021 television season showed 78 of the top 1,500 shows had some racial, ethnic or sexual orientation diversity.

And people want more representation, because not only does it increase the self-esteem for people of marginalized groups, reduce stereotypes and support the wants of viewers of color, it helps accurately portray the world and the people in it.

Here are 14 shows (in no particular order) from 2022 that had casts led by people of color that are well worth watching. These series either came out in 2022 or had a season premiere this year.

Demián Bichir (‘Let the Right One In’): ‘It’s one of the most complex and difficult characters that I have ever played’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“This is not your everyday fantasy or vampire story,” declares past Oscar nominee Demian Bichir (“A Better Life”) about Showtime’s horror drama “Let the Right One In,” which concludes its ambitious limited run on December 11. For our recent webchat he adds, “we’re always hoping to find something that is three-dimensional and something that can help us expand our own limits and our own range and hopefully something that represents a risk or something that goes beyond the genre. That’s what I found here,” he says. “It’s one of the most complex and difficult characters that I have ever played.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.

‘Let The Right One In’ Star Ian Foreman Signs With Paradigm
Image
Exclusive: Ian Foreman has signed with Paradigm Talent Agency.

Foreman is currently starring in the Showtime vampire series Let The Right One In, inspired by the bestselling 2004 novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist and its 2008 Swedish film adaptation.

It centers on Mark (Demián Bichir) and his daughter Eleanor (Taylor Baez), whose lives were changed forever 10 years earlier when she was turned into a vampire. Twd’s Spinoffs Can Explain Virgil’s Confusing S11 Return
Image
Warning: Spoilers for The Walking Dead season 11, part 3

The Walking Dead’s spinoffs can make sense of the decision to bring back Virgil. After crossing paths with Michonne and helping set up her search for Michonne in season 10, Kevin Carroll’s character made a surprise return in the show’s final season. In addition to helping Connie get back home, he took part in the Alexandrians' efforts to survive the storm in The Walking Dead season 11, part 1 finale.

Virgil’s return to the series has prompted a great deal of confusion, especially since he didn’t make a single appearance in the second or third batches of episodes. When Virgil was brought into the fold, it was assumed that The Walking Dead was building toward him having an important role in the show’s remaining episodes, but that didn’t actually happen. The show pulling him into the story only...

Andrew Hinderaker (‘Let the Right One In’ showrunner): ‘What are you willing to do for someone you love?’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“The core of the show is what are you willing to do for someone you love?” reveals Andrew Hindraker, creator and showrunner of Showtime’s horror drama “Let the Right One In.” For our recent webchat he adds, “the light and the darkness, I know that sounds like an image that has been used before, but it really profoundly, literally informed so many of the visuals,” he explains. “For example, the first scene of the show is a vampire experiencing his first sunrise in years. He has a shot where in the darkness of the eyes, you see the reflection of the sun breaking the horizon, and that’s like a literal light in the darkness,” he says. “There’s a lot of darkness in the frame, but there is a tiny flickering light that never goes out.” We talked with Hinderaker as part of Gold Derby’s special “Meet...
