The police procedural Grimm aired on NBC between 2011 and 2017, presenting six seasons worth of terrifying monsters to marvel at. Every season of Grimm seemed to up the ante, bringing new demons and more powerful creatures designed to send shivers down spines. The series mixed crime drama with supernatural horror and fantasy, recalling popular TV shows like The X-Files and Supernatural. However, uniquely, Grimm is inspired by the Brothers Grimm and their Northern European fairy tales. These folk stories provided ample inspiration for Grimm's varied and creative monsters.
Grimm is one of the modern procedural TV shows that redefined the genre, adding a fresh twist to an old concept. Although Grimm got mixed reviews throughout its long tenure on the air, looking back on the show reveals some favorable elements. Despite getting canceled ahead of season 7 due to declining ratings, Grimm was able to reinvent a huge number of fantasy monsters.

Horror and the holidays go surprisingly well together, and there are a few underrated combinations of the two genres worth watching before the year ends. Christmas horror films have become increasingly common throughout the years, coming from places all around the world. Such a vast presentation of Christmas horror films ensures a consistently refreshing take on the chilling combination. Threats in these films range from evil Santa Clauses to supernatural or bizarre figures who are determined to put a damper on the most wonderful time of the year.
The Christmas season is associated with joyous celebrations, but the best Christmas horror movies break through and gain popularity with audiences that endure for years. Movies like Krampus and Black Christmas successfully take the cheery imagery associated with the holiday and fuse it with suspense and terrifying acts of murder. Though the underrated horror holiday films haven't gained as much attention, they...

As fall turns into winter, and a chill enters the air, horror fans begin to feast on their favorite holiday horrors. Black Christmas, Gremlins, and Silent Night, Deadly Night are all seasonal staples, and more contemporary offerings, such as Krampus and Better Watch Out, have become new classics. Yet for additional helpings of festive frights, perhaps the following double-feature could be considered; both The Dorm That Dripped Blood and Trapped Alive even hail from the decade where Christmas Horror, as a subgenre, began to take shape and resemble its more modern form.
The Dorm That Dripped Blood also goes by Pranks, The Third Night, and Death Dorm. The later title is what appears on the source print for Synapse Films’ uncut restoration, however, the longer name is what sticks best, even for those who have never seen this 1982 obscurity. Theres always that strange transition period in horror movies where things can get lost in the shuffle. The 70s and its nihilism broke late in the decade to swerve into masked killers and the slasher genre. That heyday was far shorter than people remember but the late 80s did something similar in transitioning to straight to video smash successes and a crazy number of sequels and adaptations. That well, too, would dry up, and when Wes Craven released Scream in 1996, the landscape would shift to smart slashers and then found footage. The teen slasher era was first with things like Urban Legend, Scream sequels, Disturbing Behavior, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and hell, even Final Destination posits literal death as a slasher villain. These are more along the lines of the top shelf example but one that could qualify for a best horror movie you never saw And...

Martin Lawrence is returning for a sequel to his 1999 action comedy Blue Streak.
In what might just be the most out of left field sequel news we’ve reported this year, Martin Lawrence police comedy Blue Streak is getting a follow up, 25 years after the original.
Deadline has revealed that a sequel is in development at Sony. Lawrence is onboard as star and a producer through his company Run Tel Dat. The script has been written by Cole Maliska, but there’s currently no word on who might direct.
If you need a refresher, the original Blue Streak was inspired by, of all things, the 1965 Sid James and Dick Emery film The Big Job. It saw Lawrence play Miles, a jewel thief who disguises himself as a policeman in order to steal diamonds, but ends up being partnered with actual cop, Detective Carlson, played by Luke Wilson. Shenanigans ensue, and...

Grimm defied all odds, lasting for six seasons with over 100 episodes, blending procedural elements with fantasy in a unique way. Despite its seeming cancelation in 2016, Grimm's creators were not surprised, as they wanted a satisfying but not necessarily definitive ending. Grimm remains popular in syndication and streaming, with a comic book series and tie-in novels, although a spinoff series did not move forward.
Based on the fairy tales written by the Brothers Grimm, Grimm was a supernatural NBC drama that seemed to defy all conventional wisdom. It was released in 2011, when other fantasy shows such as Constantine, based on the hit adult DC Comic Hellblazer, were dropping like flies. The popularity of serialized television was still relatively new, but Grimm also had a procedural element, making it more akin to series like The X-Files. It blended the familiar format of a monster/mystery-of-the-week series with a fantastical internal mythology.

Deftones are one of the great rock bands to emerge in the 1990s. It’s hard to imagine the band going by any other name, as “Deftones” is strangely befitting of the act’s emotive, dynamic alt-metal sound.
However, at one point in the early days of the band, the young Sacramento outfit almost opted to change its name in a bid to score a record deal.
Ex-Roadrunner Records executive Monte Conner recently recounted the story in a since-deleted Facebook post [via The Prp]. It was Conner who almost signed the band and made them change their name “as a condition of the deal.”
“In the summer of 1993, I was sent a Deftones demo by their manager Dave Park,” wrote Conner. “He was based in Sacramento, where the band was from. I was instantly blown away; their music was like nothing I had ever heard before. While these days the band...

Deftones‘ latest studio album, Ohms, dropped in 2020, but it appears the guys are well into the writing phase for their next LP. Speaking on the Gnostic Academy podcast, guitarist Stephen Carpenter said the band is working with producer Nick Raskulinecz on a new album, and they’re eyeing a 2024 release.
“Just in the last couple of months, really — two or three months; well, maybe a little longer now, really; February is when we started … to work on new material for a new record,” Carpenter told Gnostic Academy (as transcribed by Blabbermouth.net). “It’s going good now. While movie remakes are popular across genres (Anyone remember the 2018 remake of Garry Marshall's "Overboard"?), the horror genre is especially susceptible. The genre is unique insofar as its scares endure more than most. Where comedies and action movies, for instance, are inextricably linked to their time of release, a scary movie is a scary movie. With a fresh coat of paint, what was new three decades ago can seem fresh again.
A curious contemporary trend has emerged in which relatively recent titles are remade just a few years after their original releases. Released just 14 years after the first "Cabin Fever," the remake used the exact script as the original. Recently, horror filmmaker Anthony Diblasi released "Malum" in select theaters. "Malum," a remake of Diblasi's 2014 indie "Last Shift," isn't quite a shot-for-shot remake so much as it is a reimagining. With more money and more experience, Diblasi revisits his demonic fable in a new context.

The late 80’s mostly pushed aside slashers for a return to potpourri poisons; creatures, monsters, zombies and mad scientists shared the spotlight in a bid to woo horror fans grown complacent with mere stabbing and stalking. Out of this stew grew The Kindred (1987), a mostly forgotten mélange that serves as the final (and best) calling card for the directing team of Stephen Carpenter and Jeffrey Obrow (The Power). Bring your slickers and keep the first five rows clear; things are going to get very messy.
Distributed by FM Entertainment in early January, The Kindred brought in $2.4 million before shuffling off to a home video release from Vestron; some critics praised the effects and that’s about it. But for horror fans who missed it the first go around (pick me!), it offers a fast paced ride through groovy practical effects and a typically, um, heightened performance from Rod Steiger.

NBC is going back to its Grimm past: The network is developing a spinoff of the series, which ran for six seasons.

All hail Film Ventures International. Long-time purveyors of cinematic sleaze and genre enchantment, they’ve produced or at least distributed some of my very favorite low budget wonders: Beyond the Door (1974), Grizzly (’76), The Incubus (1981), and Pieces (’82) are only some of their titles that have provided hours of entertainment, from the goofy to the sublime (which in their case, is often one and the same). One of their final releases, The Power (1984), is a good example of their often heady mix, and a solid springboard for directors Stephen Carpenter and Jeffrey Obrow on their way to their demented mutant mash The Kindred (’87).
Released in late January, The Power (Aka Evil Passage) didn’t do much business; playing in theatres for one weekend and bringing in just under a million dollars, head honcho Edward L. Montoro surely heading out the back door with a bagful of cash on his way to bankrupting the company.

A look at the pre-Grimm work of co-creators David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf, a screenwriting partnership that’s lasted over thirty years…
A poker table in the late seventies, a bathroom in the mid-noughties… television shows have many birthplaces. Had screenwriters David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf not been introduced at a card game over thirty years ago, and had producer Todd Milliner not taken a 2006 shower in which he pondered what existing stories were in need of a modern update for TV, then Grimm might never have existed.
First, that poker game. Greenwalt and Kouf’s friendship began a couple of years before their first official screenwriting credit on 1982’s horror spoof Wacko, a job for which the pair were paid the princely sum of fifteen thousand dollars…

Under the pact, the writing partners will continue as executive producers on the NBC drama, produced by Universal TV and Sean Hayes and Todd Milliner’s Hazy Mills. Grimm, which Greenwalt and Kouf co-created with Stephen Carpenter, was recently picked up for a third season with an early renewal. Its most recent second season (6.9 million viewers, 2.4 in 18-49 in Live+7) was up 14% in 18-49 and 12% in total viewers vs. Season 1. Greenwalt and Kouf exec produce the series with Hayes,...
