Pinewood to Name Toronto Soundstage After Late Paul Bronfman (Exclusive)
Image
Pinewood Toronto Studios is set to name one of its soundstages after Paul Bronfman, the Canadian industry pioneer who died in February at age 67.

Bronfman was a longtime chairman of Pinewood Toronto Studios, and before that a founding partner and a major shareholder in Filmport Studios, a production studio complex that opened in Toronto’s portlands in 2008. A year later, the facility was rebranded as Pinewood Toronto Studios, with Bronfman in the role of chairman and a key shareholder.

In 2023, Bronfman sold his minority stake to the Pinewood Group, the London-based studio group that runs Pinewood Studios in the U.K. and now owns all of the Toronto mega-studio.

“Pinewood Toronto Studios would not exist today, had it not been for Paul Bronfman’s personal and professional support throughout the years — first as an investor and our founding chairman, and following the sale of the business to Pinewood Group in...

Paul Bronfman, William F. White and Pinewood Toronto Studios Founder, Dies at 67
Image
Paul Bronfman, the pioneering supplier of production equipment, soundstages and services to the Canadian and Hollywood film and TV industry, has died. He was 67.

Bronfman died Wednesday night in Toronto following a long battle with multiple sclerosis. “He was the most resilient, stubborn and dedicated man,” his family said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

“What an incredible loss the Canadian film and television industry is facing today with the passing of Paul Bronfman,” said Neishaw Ali, CEO of Spin VFX. “He was a visionary leader with an unwavering commitment to supporting filmmakers, investing in infrastructure and fostering talent. But beyond his business acumen, Paul was a generous philanthropist who championed the arts, education and the next generation of storytellers. His impact will be felt for generations to come.”

Tributes poured in Thursday from across the Canadian industry. “Paul was a friend, mentor and like a brother to me,...

Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery to Return for New ‘Boondock Saints’ Film
Image
A new take on “The Boondock Saints” is in the works with the 1999 cult film’s original stars Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery reprising their roles as the MacManus Brothers.

Thunder Road Pictures, which produces the “John Wick” franchise and the upcoming “Monkey Man” from Dev Patel, announced it is teaming with the rights holder Dragonfly Films to the original 1999 cult film “The Boondock Saints” to jointly produce what’s being described as a “reimagining” rather than a direct sequel. Dragonfly Films also confirmed the news on its Instagram.

Reedus and Flanery both portrayed the Irish Catholic killers rooting out Boston crime all in the name of the Lord in the original film, and they also returned for the 2009 follow-up film, “The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day.” However, Troy Duffy, the story’s original director and writer, will not direct the new film but will produce it. He...

‘The Boondock Saints’ Are Back; Norman Reedus, Sean Patrick Flanery Return As Boston Vigilantes As Thunder Road & Dragonfly Films Take Reins
Image
Exclusive: The rebirth of the 1999 cult favorite film The Boondock Saints is upon us. Thunder Road, the producer behind the John Wick films, has stepped in and joined rights-holder Dragonfly Films to make what they are calling a universe expansion of the action film franchise about the fraternal twin Irish brothers who raise holy hell to rid their Boston hometown of all criminals.

In the current configuration, Troy Duffy will step aside as director after creating and helming the original and the 2009 sequel The Boondock Saints: All Saints Day. Both films starred The Walking Dead’s Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery as the MacManus brothers, with Billy Connolly playing their father.

Reedus and Flanery will reprise their roles, and the search is on for a new director. Duffy plans to write a series of books about the Saints, continuing their story that way.

There might be a renaissance going on for these action franchises,...

David Cronenberg’s ‘Shivers’ Gets New Exclusive Blu-ray Steelbook Release
Lionsgate’s Vestron Video Collector’s Series is getting a Steelbook upgrade, at least when it comes to David Cronenberg‘s controversial feature debut, Shivers.

Shivers becomes available on Steelbook® on March 5, 2024, exclusively at Walmart.

In Shivers, “The residents of a suburban high-rise apartment building are being infected by a strain of parasites that turn them into mindless, sex-crazed fiends out to infect others by the slightest sexual contact.” The cast includes Paul Hampton, Lynn Lowry, and Barbara Steele.

Cronenberg blends sex and violence in a nightmarish parasitic outbreak in a high-rise apartment complex. Scientifically engineered parasites meant to replace functioning human organs instead renders their hosts sexually violent, hellbent on spreading their infection to others. How the pulsing worm-like parasites infect provides a lot of gnarly body horror moments, including a nightmare bathtub scene.

Check out the Steelbook artwork and full list of features included in the release below.

Fremantle, Kansai TV Team on Entertainment Format ‘Quiz Pong’ – Global Bulletin
Image
Format

Fremantle and Kansai TV have launched new entertainment format “Quiz Pong” following a co-development deal initially revealed at MIPCOM 2022. The format was launched in Japan last month by Kansai TV and Fremantle will handle the production and global distribution.

“Quiz Pong” is a fast-paced gameshow where teams compete against each other in a fun tournament testing their mental, physical, and strategy skills. The teams go head-to-head by throwing balls into moving baskets, on a supersized set and answering general knowledge questions to score points. The harder the basket is to reach the more difficult the question inside the basket will be for their opponent. After battling through two rounds, the winning teams compete in the grand finale for a prize.

Miho Okada, executive managing director at Kansai TV, said: “Thanks to the innovative idea from our producers and creative support from Fremantle, ‘Quiz Pong’ developed into a fun, exciting,...

Johnny Mnemonic's Black-And-White Release Was A 'Redemption' For Robert Longo
Image
It's safe to say that "Johnny Mnemonic" has not enjoyed a sterling reputation over the years. Upon its release in the summer of 1995, Roger Ebert damned it with faint praise, calling it "one of the great goofy gestures of recent cinema, a movie that doesn't deserve one nanosecond of serious analysis but has a kind of idiotic grandeur that makes you almost forgive it." Time didn't exactly soften some other critics opinions on it, either; Chris Nashawaty wrote in 2019 that the movie has its admirers but "they're all nuts."

The one person to bear the brunt of criticism for the film was director Robert Longo. In 2021, Longo reflected to Screen Slate on how "Johnny Mnemonic" affected his life: "I basically got thrown into the garbage heap for a while," he said. "My career tanked after that, for sure."

Fortunately for Longo and us long-suffering "Johnny" fans, the film was given...

Norman Reedus, Sean Patrick Flanery & Director Troy Duffy Reunite For ‘The Boondock Saints III’ – AFM
Image
Exclusive: The Boondock Saints are back. Director Troy Duffy has reunited with Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery for Boondock Saints III, a new installment of the saga of fraternal twin Irish brothers Connor and Murphy MacManus, who go on a vigilante track. That starts after they dispatch two Russian mobsters in self defense, and then have an epiphany to rid their Boston hometown of all crime, while being hunted by an FBI agent (Willem Dafoe) who can’t help but admire their cause.

Impossible Dream Entertainment partners Shaun Redick and Yvette Yates Redick are producing the package with Don Carmody (Good Will Hunting) and Duffy. Latter wrote the script for the film with Flanery, with a lot of input from Reedus. The film will shoot next May, when Flanery has completed his work on the series The Boys and Reedus is freed up from The Walking Dead.

‘Shivers’ Blu-ray Review (Vestron Video)
Image
Stars: Paul Hampton, Joe Silver, Lynn Lowry, Allan Kolman, Susan Petrie, Barbara Steele, Ronald Mlodzik, Barry Baldaro | Written and Directed by David Cronenberg

When it comes to horror we all tend to have our favourite type, some will say slashers while others may say they enjoy good old Hammer. I grew up on horror and when I was younger I had a thirst for any film I could get hold of, I found the styles I loved and directors that really caught my interest. One of these directors was David Cronenberg, but one movie that never really sat right with me was Shivers, I just didn’t get it. Then I grew older and wiser and with greater understanding realised just how good the film actually is.

Shivers was Cronenberg’s first full feature movie, and what a shock it was to the world (especially Canada), it threw not only...

‘Terror Train’ Blu-ray Review (88 Films)
Stars: Ben Johnson, Jamie Lee Curtis, Hart Bochner, David Copperfield, Vanity | Written by T.Y. Drake | Directed by Roger Spottiswoode

I love the slasher film craze more so than any other sub-genre. Yes, they’re a little repetitive for the most part but they’re always fun to watch. I guess the big formula with most of them, is A) Insert traumatic event. B) Find a location, secluded or otherwise. C) Cast teenagers and have them doff their tops and D) Have them get killed in a variety of manners. Also, the more dated the production, the better. Terror Train follows all of these steps and more. It’s one of the more upstanding and inventive of the slasher films to come out of the early 80′s. The biggest reason why it stands out to me, is that while Jamie Lee Curtis is the star of the film and easily the most recognizable of the roles.

David Mamet at an event for When Do We Eat? (2005)
What’s your "only in Toronto" moment?

Having a celebratory dinner at Sotto-Sotto [ in 2001] after the premiere of David Mamet’s Heist with David, Danny Devito, Gene Hackman, Rebecca Pidgeon and others and having absolutely no one approach the table for an autograph or anything. When we were leaving, everyone in the restaurant applauded, so they knew we were there. Very Canadian to not be aggressive with stars in town for Tiff.

What was your Tiff high point?

Bringing an elephant in full regalia marching down Yonge street to the Elgin for the premiere of Breakaway.

Roman Kopelevich’s La-based Red Sea Media arrives in Berlin this week with sales rights to the action thriller 22 Chaser.

Dan Bekerman and Don Carmody are producing the story of an honest tow truck driver who risks everything in a desperate quest to become king of the road and provide for his family.

“Growing up in the 80’s, I became a fan of high-concept action thrillers,” Kopelevich said. “This film reminds me of those – this is a no-holds-barred action thriller.

“A man placed under extreme circumstances who needs to provide for his family has to make choices: whether to be ethical or to put food on the table. Sadly, they are mutually exclusive, as many of life’s decisions are.”

Boondock Saints TV Show Won't Bring Back Original Cast
2017 Barnes&Noble book tour
A few weeks ago, Don Carmody Television announced it was partnering with Boondock Saints creator Troy Duffy to create a Boondock Saints prequel TV series entitled Boondock Saints: Origins, which has launched a crowdfunding campaign to finance the first season. While no plot details were given, the title alone suggests a prequel that will provide an origin story for the MacManus brothers, although many were wondering if the original Boondock Saints stars Sean Patrick Flannery and Norman Reedus would be back as Conor and Murphy MacManus. Both actors took to social media to reveal that they have no involvement with this movie, or a proposed Boondock Saints 3 movie. Here's both actors' joint statement.

"For all those with questions about the Boondock Saints videos, news and announcements, neither Norman Reedus nor Sean Patrick Flannery are involved in any way with the TV show, Bds III, or their recent sales/marketing campaigns.

The Boondock Saints: Origins Coming To Television
The Boondock Saints may not be the most instantly recognizable film out there, but it’s got a very loyal following and for good reason. Fans will know full well just what an enjoyable, wild, Tarantino-esque, action romp it is, but unfortunately, critics didn’t quite see things the same way, as they panned it upon release. In the years since, though, it’s gone on to become a firm cult classic and even spawned a sequel in 2009. Admittedly, the second outing was a far cry from the first, but it had its moments and ever since, people have been crying out for another tale featuring vigilante twin brothers Connor (Sean Patrick Flanery) and Murphy MacManus (Norman Reedus).

While another feature film is what fans want to see most, it looks like they’re going to have to settle for a small screen take on the story, as original director...

‘The Boondocks Saints’ Prequel That’s Happening for Some Reason Is Seeking Donations — Watch
Troy Duffy
“The Boondocks Saints” franchise is still alive and coming to your TV.

Troy Duffy’s 1999 film starred Sean Patrick Flannery and Norman Reedus as Irish American twin brothers Connor and Murphy MacManus, who took it upon themselves to take on the evil Russian mobsters in Boston. Despite critical panning and only getting an initial release in five theaters for one week due to the Columbine High School massacre, the film gained a cult following from its international release and DVD sales. In 2009, Duffy released a sequel, “The Boondocks Saints II: All Saints Day.”

While details about the plot are under wraps for “The Boondocks Saints: Origins” TV series, Don Carmody Television (Dctv) launched its fan-focused pre-order campaign that is seeking donations at BoondocksBack.com. While fans can donate any amount, the campaign has also created merchandise incentives in three increasing tiers. All three tiers will receive a box of “The...

Blu-ray Review: David Cronenberg’s Rabid Collector’s Edition
It’s a funny thing, watching David Cronenberg’s early films now with 40 years of work to his credit. He’s a director whose movies have a reputation for being cold, clinical, and cerebral. He is known for his fascination with body horror, but approaches it from the remoteness of a distant observer rather than as a fellow human being. And while some of this characterization may be correct, very little of it accurately describes his early efforts, including 1977’s Rabid, Cronenberg’s second-ever horror movie (following Shivers, aka They Came From Within) and his fourth feature film overall, now out on a special edition Blu-ray from Scream Factory.

At the time most famous for giving adult film superstar Marilyn Chambers her first leading role in a mainstream movie, Rabid is one of several variations on a theme Cronenberg made in the first half of his career, in which he...

Roger Avary To Direct "Unwind" Film
"Rules of Attraction" and "Killing Zoe" director Roger Avary is set to helm "Unwind" for Voltage Pictures and Constantin Film.

Based on Neal Shusterman's award-winning novel, the story imagines a cruel dystopian world in which those over eighteen years of age, either function as a cog in the machine of a brainwashed society, or get 'unwound' - your body is taken apart, piece by piece, and given to those the government determines to be more suitable.

Connor (Ian Nelson), Risa (Kiernan Shipka), and Lev (Percy Hynes White) are three young people raging against the machine. Their desire for freedom and self-determination is greater than their fear of unwinding.

Bill Paxton and Jay Baruchel also star in the film while Avery and his daughter Gala Avary wrote the screenplay. Don Carmody, Robert Kulzer, Roger Avary, Julian Stone and Marc Benardout will produce.

Avary and his daughter Gala Avary wrote the screenplay based on Neal Shusterman’s novel about a future society where 18-year-olds either graduate to a brainwashed collective or get taken apart for their body parts to be dished out to those deemed to be more deserving.

Bill Paxton and Jay Baruchel are attached to star, as are Ian Nelson, Kiernan Shipka and Percy Hynes White, who are being lined up to play a trio of youngsters determined to beat the system and achieve freedom.

Carmody produces with Robert Kulzer, Avary, Julian Stone and Marc Benardout.

Executive producers are Constantin’s Martin Moszkowicz, Voltage’s Nicolas Chartier and Jonathan Deckter, and Charlotte Stoudt and Catherine Kimmel.

No One Over 22 Is Left Alive In New Trailer For Netflix’s Between
Unlike House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Daredevil and Bloodline, Netflix isn’t making much of a promotional push for its upcoming series Between. Perhaps that’s because it’s a co-production with Canadian networks, which means it’ll be un-bingeable, diverging from the Netflix model by launching on May 21 and releasing a new episode weekly. Let the impatient viewer rioting commence.

A survivalist thriller set in the small town of Pretty Lake, Between kicks off as a mysterious plague kills off every resident of the town over the age of 21. The government quarantines the town, leading to a power vaccum and struggle for dominance as the teens go to war with one another in order to stay alive. Think Lord of the Flies with moody, disinterested youth.

It’s a very similar premise to Michael Grant’s bestselling Gone series, which Sony Pictures Television is planning to adapt for the small screen,...
