Will Ferrell Regrets Dressing in Drag As Janet Reno for Laughs
Image
Will Ferrell was a recurring character machine during his tenure on Saturday Night Live, creating classics like Craig the Spartan Cheerleader, Neil Diamond, Roger of the Lovahs, middle school music teacher Marty Culp, Harry Caray, Alex Trebek and George W. Bush. But there’s at least one repeat comedy character that Ferrell probably wouldn’t do today, he told The New York Times’ The Interview podcast.

Play

Ferrell’s dressing in drag to portray Attorney General Janet Reno, a recurring sketch he performed four times, is “something I wouldn’t choose to do now,” he said.

Ferrell is promoting Will & Harper, an examination of his relationship with his good friend and collaborator Harper Steele. Steele came out as a trans woman to Ferrell two years ago — the documentary is an account of their friendship in light of the revelation.

For Steele’s part, Ferrell’s Reno character was uncomfortable comedy.

Will Ferrell's Trans Documentary Will & Harper Landing At Netflix Is A Double-Edged Sword
Image
Harper Steele is, with no exaggeration, one of my favorite comedy writers to ever do it. Not only did she write on "Saturday Night Live" from 1995-2015, the years when I was developing my own sense of humor, but she's also behind the Lifetime film "A Deadly Adoption" and the Academy Award-nominated Netflix flick, "Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga." She was also a writer on the "Doug" episode "Doug's Cool Shoes," which has some of the best visual joke-telling of the animated series' first season. This is to say that Steele has been formative in shaping my ability to find humor in the world around me.

Over the years, Steele has become best friends with Will Ferrell, arguably one of the most recognizable comedic actors in the world. Ferrell and Steele are frequent collaborators, and their latest project is "Will & Harper," a documentary about the pair...

John William Ferrell, born on July 16, 1967, in Irvine, California, was brought into a world of creativity and art. Both his parents hailed from Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, but moved to California in 1964. He has a mixed ancestry of English, German, and Irish.

Pride Week: Photographer Jerry Pritikin, ‘When Then Was … Now!’
Image
Chicago – Locally, Jerry Pritikin was known as the Chicago Cubs “Bleacher Preacher.” But Jerry had a more important role in his life … as a photographer who captured 1970s gay liberation in San Francisco, including gay activist icon Harvey Milk. His new exhibit is “When Then Was … Now!” For more info, click Jerry Pritikin.

Photographer Jerry Pritikin, Now and Then (Photo with Harvey Milk)

The exhibit is at the new Chicago Center for Photojournalism, founded by photographer Denise Keim, and is in place during Pride Month. When Then Was…Now! highlights a marriage of sorts between San Francisco and Chicago, to celebrate the life and legacy of Jerry Pritikin, a historic photojournalist and baseball fan legend.

The exhibition puts a spotlight on the photographer’s dedication to the LGBTQ+ community and his love for baseball as an ultimate Cubs Fan, legendarily known as the Bleacher Preacher.

The 12 Best Will Ferrell Movies, Ranked
Image
An airheaded anchorman, a perpetually upbeat elf, an evil Lego minifigure — Will Ferrell has found a variety of colorful outlets for his comedy over the years. Ever since he first graced the stage of "Saturday Night Live's" iconic studio 8H back in 1995, Ferrell's distinctly fluid, improv-heavy, and hilariously infectious brand of humor has helped him successfully make the jump from small-screen funnyman to one of the biggest and most bankable movie stars working today.

It's a bit more than that, though. Ferrell's comedic talents have attracted some unlikely comrades over the years — people like John C. Reilly and Mark Wahlberg — and in turn, they have helped create a new comedy sub-genre that's unafraid to keep things fast and loose when it comes to off-script gags and adlibs. With riskier, more thoughtful entries scattered through his résumé, he's not one to rest on his laurels either.

All this, we know.

Julie Chen Moonves in Big Brother (2000)
‘Big Brother’ Posts Big Thursday Primetime Ratings – But CBS Doesn’t Win the Night
Julie Chen Moonves in Big Brother (2000)
CBS’ “Big Brother” is a reliable bet to be primetime’s highest-rated title whenever a new episode airs. But despite leading the night on Thursday with a healthy 0.76 rating in the advertiser-friendly 18-49 demographic, CBS wasn’t actually the highest-rated network overall. Instead, Fox managed to net the most impressive average demo rating on the night with a 0.65. It was also the most-watched network overall Thursday with 3.1 million total average viewers. How did Fox do it? Well, as anyone who follows these daily ratings updates knows, you never bet against live sports in primetime. Also Read: ‘Big Brother’ Wins Wednesday’s Highly Competitive Primetime Ratings Battle Here’s how primetime shook out across the broadcast networks: As mentioned, Fox was No. 1 in both average demo rating (.65) and total average viewers (3.1 million) Thursday night, according to official live plus same-day Nielsen data. Ratings: Field of Dreams Game Slides vs. 2021, Big Brother Tops Thursday
Image
In the latest TV ratings, Fox’s broadcast of Major League Baseball’s “Field of Dreams” game — featuring a Harry Caray hologram lookalike — averaged 2.8 million total viewers and a 0.5 demo rating (per fast nationals), down sharply from last year‘s inaugural and well-watched made-in-Iowa outing.

CBS’ Big Brother eviction episode (3.7 mil/0.5) — pending adjustment due to a bit of NFL preemption — was steady week-to-week and led Thursday in both measures.

Fans React to Harry Caray Hologram at ‘Field of Dreams’ Game (Video)
Harry Caray
The late, legendary MLB broadcaster Harry Caray returned in hologram form at the MLB’s second Field of Dreams game, which took place Thursday (August 11) on a field near the set of the famous Kevin Costner movie in Dyersville, Iowa. Caray, who passed away in February 1998, was known for singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” which he was credited with creating and popularizing. The familiar tune rang out during the game’s seventh inning on Thursday night, with a hologram of Caray leading the anthem “All right, let me hear you,” the hologram said. “Been a while. A one, a two, a three…” The Caray hologram then performed the song in unison with the crown in attendance for the game between the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs. Harry Caray Hologram at Field of Dreams Game: Was It the 'Greatest,' or Destined to 'Haunt Your Dreams'?
Image
Harry Caray, the legendary broadcaster who passed away in February of 1998, made an appearance at Thursday night’s “Field of Dreams” game between the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs — by way of a singing hologram that was either “awesome” or “odd,” depending on who you ask.

This year’s “Field of Dreams” game was again held at its movie namesake location, in Dyersville, Iowa, and aired on Fox. In keeping with the theme and in the wake of Ray Liotta’s recent passing, the proceedings included a brief tribute to Shoeless Joe Jackson’s late portrayer, by film star Kevin Costner.

Will Ferrell at an event for Le monde (presque) perdu (2009)
It was homecoming for Will Ferrell, who returned to Saturday Night Live this weekend and immediately reprised his role as George W. Bush. The greatest hits, however, pretty much stopped there.

Folks tuning in to see the return of Jeopardy host Alex Trebek or legendary sports announcer Harry Caray were left to make do with, umm, Jacob Silj. Thankfully, Ferrell still managed to put on a great show, kicking things off with a tuneful monologue that found the potentially concussed host wandering into the audience to sing about the “rudest man in show business,” Lorne Michaels.

The episode really picked up in the second half,...

Will Ferrell's Saturday Night Live impersonations live on with Leslie Jones, who hilariously mimics the actor's mimicry in a new SNL promo. Ferrell will host the January 27th episode, which features Chris Stapleton as musical guest.

In the brief clip, Jones runs through most of the Ferrell classics: George W. Bush (in his "strategery" gaffe), Alex Trebek, Harry Caray, his cheerleader character opposite Cheri Oteri and the "Get off the shed!" guy.

She ends with perhaps his greatest hit: Gene Frenkle, the fictional Blue Öyster Cult cowbell player. In that final bit,...

"Wild Thing" Charlie Sheen Recaps World Series, Comments On Bill Murray
Charlie Sheen thinks the World Series will go 7 games, and perhaps controversially, doesn't take a side on who he thinks is going to win it all. The actor wrote a lengthy letter published by THR in which he summarized the World Series so far, including his take on Bill Murray's now-infamous rendition of "Take Me Out To The Ball Game," and more.

Starting first with Bill Murray and his...questionable decision to do the thing as Daffy Duck, Sheen said this...

I should also mention Bill Murray's "Take Me Out to the Ball Game." As a student of the game, Bill's intro sounded like he was talking about Harry Caray, but then he goes into Daffy Duck. That doesn't sit at the doorstop of baseball's unearthed mythology. It's was... different. That's all I'm saying.

Sheen talked about all the games and then finished out game five with this:...

Major League and Rookie Of The Year Mashup Pits The Indians Against The Cubs in The World Series
Just yesterday, we shared a bit of baseball-related entertainment when Will Ferrell resurrected his old Harry Caray impression from SNL for Jimmy Kimmel, and now we're back with yet another bit of fun surrounding this year's World Series matchup between the Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Indians.

YouTuber Ross Taylor created this mashup of 1989's Major League and 1993's Rookie of the Year, which works fairly well for a bit before devolving into nonsense by the end (spoiler alert: it appears as if both teams win). Still, though, for those of us who grew up loving the baseball movies of this era, it's somewhat interesting to imagine the two batches of characters operating in the same universe.

Hollywood may be known for its storytellers, but the greatest of them never wrote a script, cast an actor or called “action!” to put his tales on the big or small screen. Dave Matthews Debuts New Song on The Late Show

During their hour-long "Legends of Letterman" set on The Late Show (recorded Thursday, aired Friday), Dave Matthews Band debuted a new song called “Black and Bluebird.” The band made its television debut on Late Show 20 years ago, with Thursday marking their 13th, and final, appearance. That Dave Matthews performed just several days after Will Ferrell revived Harry Caray, and just one day after Tina Fey took off her #LastDressEver, shows the breadth and variety of Letterman’s appeal. Last Night on Late Night, 5/4/15
Real comedy still happens on late night, we can prove it. If you like Conan comedy gold, Fallon friendliness, cutesy Corden, list-making Letterman, kneedy Kimmel, and all the rest, I hope you’ll enjoy this column too.

Last night on late night, Letterman talked about retirement with President Obama, Conan sat down with Avengers’ Jeremy Renner and Silicon Valley‘s T.J Miller, Fallon made an 80s music video with Jack Black, James Corden did a 5 minute “best scene” green screen of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s movies with him, Kimmel talked about being Manny Pacquiao’s very own “Justin Bieber”, and at The Daily Show, producer Brian Grazer shared his thoughts on his book and career.

Late Show with Dave Letterman

“Hoping for a pardon”, “Down to the bitter end” With his time at CBS almost up, Dave is doing some pretty fun things, like sitting down with Obama and joking about playing dominos in retirement.

Best of Late Night TV: President Obama's Beautiful Letterman Tribute, Every Arnold Movie in 6 Minutes (Video)

Sadly, David Letterman is winding down his term as "Late Show" host. On Monday night, President Barack Obama stopped by on the farewell tour. They talked about their mutual retirement plans (play dominoes together?) and President Obama said he knows Dave likes Michelle more than him. (Michelle was a guest late last week.) Dave asked Potus if this was the first country in which he was president. "It is, I suspect, the first and last country that I'm president. Unlike late-night talk show hosts, I have a term limit." 'Modern Family' season 6 premiere react: Love is in the air
Harry Caray
[This post contains plot details from the Modern Family season 6 premiere, which aired on Sept. 24]

The last we saw the Dunphy/Pritchett clan, they were celebrating at a beautiful, fourth-time’s-a-charm wedding for Cam and Mitchell. Over the summer break, the newlyweds went on a honeymoon. Cut to three months later, where we pick up: Cam is still very much in that lovey-dovey frame of mind. There are endless flowers, backrubs, at-work drop-ins, shared chairs, dancing, etc. Mitchell is tired of it, but his wise sister tells him to keep that thought to himself. But one can only handle so much love in the form of balloons and life-size cardboard cutouts, and when even Lily grows weary,...

Saturday Night Live (1975)
25 Best 'SNL' Celebrity Impressions Ever
Saturday Night Live (1975)
Looking back on four decades of "Saturday Night Live" impersonations, it's cool to see how many ways a celebrity impression can be hilarious, provocative, or just plain effective. Sometimes an impression works because it's a dead-ringer for the real thing (See: most of Dana Carvey's work), but sometimes a twisted or loopy take on a familiar figure is even more engrossing and funny.  We've picked the 25 best celebrity impressions in "SNL" history, and for the sake of such a short list, we're only including impersonators who served as cast members on the show. (This means Kate Hudson as Drew Barrymore and Tom Hanks as Dennis Miller will have to wait for another list.) I'll start the countdown by acknowledging the 10 candidates who almost made the cut but just missed: Terry Sweeney as Nancy Reagan, Jan Hooks as Tammy Faye Bakker, Kristen Wiig as Suze Orman, Jimmy Fallon as Barry Gibb,...

10 Answers Worth Knowing from Will Ferrell's Bizarre, Random and Hilarious Internet Q&A
Chad Smith in Bystander Revolution (2014)
Will Ferrell took part in Reddit's "Ask Me Anything" series Tuesday afternoon. Because he's a stand-up guy, he was doing it to support Cancer for College (a charity that helps provide college scholarships to cancer survivors) on World Cancer Day, and because he's Will Ferrell, he made a lot of ridiculous jokes.

Here are the best bits, starting with a question from Snoop Dogg (Reddit username: Here_Comes_The_King).

Snoop: ayy Will, imma need some more cowbell on tha next album, u game?

Will: Of course! I'm absolutely game, Snoop. I've also got some beats that I want to run by you.

John Goodman
'SNL' recap: John Goodman returns for a 13th gig, solidly hosting a shaky episode
John Goodman
Thirteen times; seriously, John Goodman has now hosted Saturday Night Live 13 times. I can’t think of anything significant I’ve ever done 13 times. And I was really looking forward to maybe rubbing Goodman’s episode in the faces of those who are just holding on until Fallon/Timberlake next week. It’s not that those two aren’t great; they are, and all of my fingers are crossed for them. But Goodman has been just as good in the past, an SNL champion if ever there was one.

It was 2001 when Goodman last hosted and, for reference, Ja Rule was the musical guest.

Will Ferrell at an event for Le monde (presque) perdu (2009)
'America's Got Talent' New York/Los Angeles Auditions: The One Act to Watch
Will Ferrell at an event for Le monde (presque) perdu (2009)
"Hey! What about this? If you had a choice between being the top scientist in your field or getting Mad Cow Disease, which would it be?" This Will Ferrell line (playing Harry Caray) in one of the all-time great SNL skits was my first thought after watching this week's auditions on America's Got Talent.

After two hours of acts from New York City and Los Angeles (again), picking the one act to watch was easier than answering that hilarious question. Sure, there was an abundance of talent, but there was next to nothing that stood out, and I blame the setup of season 8.

The Chicago Blackhawks partied hard after their dramatic Stanley Cup victory over the Boston Bruins, and lived by that old adage -- to victor goes lots and lots of meats!!!Stanley Cup Mvp Patrick Kane and the rest of the team headed straight to the famous Harry Caray's Steakhouse once they arrived back in Chi-town early Tuesday morning -- and our 'hawks sources gave up all the deets on their feast:- Crab cakes- Lamb...

Nick Offerman
Craig Robinson hits a high note in Cubs/White Sox rivalry
Nick Offerman
Nick Offerman is a man of many talents. He can literally build boats with his bare hands and he can probably whittle a decent depiction of Ernie Banks in the time it takes you to read this post. But he cannot, for the love of Harry Caray, sing a lick. At least that’s the premise of the latest New Era Rivals ad that pits his Cub-loving fan against Craig Robinson’s South Side rooter. Offerman’s attempt at singing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” would give Simon Cowell a seizure. As Robinson says, “You sound like a donkey being touched inappropriately.

Film News: ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ to Grandstand Tumbler, Bad-Pod at Chicago’s Navy Pier on May 25, 2012
Update at 10:36 p.m. on May 24,2012: Start time changed from noon to 10 a.m.

Chicago – In 2012, one of the undisputed movie champions will be Christopher Nolan’s (final) Batman trilogy film: “The Dark Knight Rises”. After transforming Chicago into Gotham City for 2008’s “The Dark Knight” and feeling snubbed when Pittsburgh won out for this last bout, you needn’t wait until opening day on July 20, 2012 to see the new film’s Tumbler and Bat-Pod.

Coined the Tumbler Tour, the hugely anticipated film will be dropping Chicago anchor in the flesh for one day only (for now): this Friday, May 25, 2012 at Navy Pier at 600 E. Grand Ave. from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on the dock side near McDonald’s and Harry Caray’s restaurant.

The Tumbler Tour for “The Dark Knight Rises” comes to Chicago on May 25, 2012 at Navy Pier.

Will Ferrell at an event for Le monde (presque) perdu (2009)
Hulu.com: Will Ferrell's 10 Best SNL Sketches Ever
Will Ferrell at an event for Le monde (presque) perdu (2009)
Will Ferrell's been gone from "SNL" for 10 years now. I don't know how we've kept it together since then, as Americans. He was the closest thing to this country's Kim Jong-Il: Everyone would cry in the street if he died, and sunglasses made him look like something in one of the saltwater tanks at Sea World.

Plus, he defined our moral fiber there for a few years. If there was a Will Ferrell Constitution, it would almost exclusively tell us that it's awesome to yell at helpless dogs, and that you desperately need to get off the damn shed. That was the turn of the century in a nutshell.

Well, thank god, Will Ferrell's back on Saturday hosting "SNL." We get a reminder of the good ol' days, when he could talk about the moon as a food product for five minutes and that would be considered a complete sketch.

Saturday Night Live (1975)
What Will Happen When Will Ferrell Hosts SNL?
Saturday Night Live (1975)
Tomorrow night, Will Ferrell returns to host Saturday Night Live for the third time — and will be the third SNL alumnus, after Jimmy Fallon and Maya Rudolph, to do so this season. As with his former colleagues, Ferrell poses a challenge to the SNL prognosticator in that it's tough to guess which of his dozens of returning characters he'll want to revive. Then there's the fact that the project Ferrell is presumably there to promote (the feature film The Campaign) doesn't come out until August. Will he bother to flog it? Would he balk at reprising his Harry Caray or Robert Goulet just because both those gentlemen happened to have passed away? These are just a few of the considerations I had to keep in mind when preparing the predictions below.11:29 p.m. Cold Open: In light of the week's events, former President George W. Bush (Will Ferrell) is...

Saturday Night Live (1975)
Will Ferrell Returning To 'SNL'
Saturday Night Live (1975)
It was just announced that Will Ferrell will return to Studio 8H on May 12 to host Saturday Night Live for the first time since 2009!

Historically SNL pretty much lets Will take the wheel as host (as they should) and try out any character that comes to mind.

Related - 7 SNL Characters To Retire

Personally, I'm praying that fans get some sort of Anchorman homage -- whether it's in the monologue or Weekend Update. But there are also a whole treasure trove of characters Will could resurrect when he hits the stage. Here are the Top 5 famous Ferrell folks I'm hoping to see on May 12!

1. Alex Trebek

With ace impressionists of ludicrous stars (Jay Pharoah's Will Smith, Vanessa Bayer's Miley Cyrus, Nasim Pedrad's Kim Kardashian) in the cast, Will could have a field day with a new round of Celebrity Jeopardy!

Who does a better Harry Caray: Will Ferrell or Texas Ranger Derek Holland?
Harry Caray
The World Series is happening, and there’s more entertainment than the National Anthem. There’s Texas Rangers’ pitcher Derek Holland, who was asked to do his impersonation of Harry Caray, the late great Chicago Cubs announcer, on-air during last night’s game 5. (He wasn’t pitching, don’t worry.) Watch it below. Then watch Will Ferrell’s standard-setting impression on Saturday Night Live. Whose is better?

To make it truly fair, they’d each have to be saying the same thing. Maybe next time they could each pretend they’re Harry Caray turning down a mother’s request for...

Texas Rangers Pitcher Pulls Out Harry Caray Impression Mid-World Series
Still not sure who to root for in this Rangers/Cardinals World Series, even 5 games into it? Looking for some random amusing non-baseball tidbit to tip your fickle allegiance one way or the other? Well, now you’re in luck! Here’s Texas Rangers pitcher Derek Holland — fresh off nearly throwing a shutout in Game 4 — strapping on a headset during Game 5 and giving his best Harry Caray impression, doing 30 seconds of impromptu play-by-play and adding a rare moment of pop culture inspiration and whimsy to a series that badly needed some: He even threw in a bonus Schwarzenegger impression before the commercial. The ball is in your court, St. Louis, and you’re running out of games. How’s Chris Carpenter’s Peter Falk?...

Happy Birthday, Will Ferrell! Today, Jul. 16, You’re 44 Years Old!
This veteran comedian is sure to have a laugh-out-loud birthday!

Will Ferrell first gained notoriety for his seven-year stay on Saturday Night Live. He humored the world with his impersonations as President George W. Bush, an over-ecstatic cheerleader, baseball announcer Harry Caray, plus many others. Since then, Will has starred in blockbuster comedies such as Old School, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy, Step Brothers, and more. Get all the details at Astrology.com! Happy birthday, Will Ferrell! If there were an astrological configuration that equaled funny, you would have it. The cosmos do tell us something of your love to shock-and-awe (Pluto conjunct Uranus), as well your ability for effortless improvisation to support the needs of a scene (Moon conjunct Neptune). This coming year, cosmic forces might reveal a surprising financial issue which, contrary to your wild characters, you would fare best handling with the utmost sobriety. When you’re done,...

Espy Awards: Steve Carell and Paul Rudd spoof Lebron's 'Decision'
ESPY Awards (2004)
Espn’s Espy Awards have become surprisingly fertile ground for comedy over the past few years. Remember when Jt smelled David Beckham’s foot in 2008? Or when Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly teamed up to give their hysterical list of demands for hosting? (“I want Harry Caray riding Mike Ditka at my kid’s birthday party.”)

But this clip of Dinner for Schmucks costars Steve Carell and Paul Rudd spoofing Lebron James’ The Decision last night might just be my favorite Espy clip of all time. Check it out here:

What do you think, PopWatchers? Funniest Espy moment ever?...
