Her acting career was hampered by a serious bout of tuberculosis. She consequently turned her attention to painting, enjoyed success as a naive artist and exhibited her work in galleries across Europe. With her second husband, she established a marionette theatre in Rome in 1952, for which she created and directed the puppets, while her husband wrote the scripts.
