At the Award Ceremony of the 27th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF), awards were presented to the winners of the festival’s five competition programmes and PÖFF’s youth and children’s film sub-festival Just Film.

The jury of the Official Selection Competition, headed by Trine Dyrholm, selected Emma Dante’s drama Misericordia as their favourite, handing the film the Grand Prix for Best Film.

Dante adapted her own play of the same name, telling the story of three prostitutes who live in the wasteland by the sea, where a village of outcasts has emerged. Its star Simone Zambelli also scooped the Best Actor Award.

The jury commented on the film with the following statement: “A powerful film about how to stay supportive and, above all, exhibit humanity in a marginalised environment. Beautifully directed, shot and acted, the Best Film Award goes to Misericordia.”

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who will be portrayed by Rose Byrne in the film, has also distanced herself from the effort.

The movie, to be written and directed by Andrew Niccol (“Gattaca”), was unveiled last week by sales company FilmNation Entertainment and CAA Media Finance. They have plans to present the project to international buyers at the upcoming Cannes virtual market.

Nz On Air and the New Zealand Film Commission are funding the development of 10 drama series ideas with international and domestic appeal.

The initiative, Raupapa Whakaari Drama to the World, will support each writer/producer team to develop high-end scripted series with an initial grant of Nz$10,000.

Each team will attend a series drama lab held in conjunction with Script to Screen, where international advisers will give feedback on story and market to assist the teams to further develop their concepts and strengthen appeal to the international marketplace.

Following the lab and submission of the re-worked projects, four teams will be selected to receive additional development funding of up to Nz$80,000.

Projects exploring the role of women in Indian society and the country’s rapid economic development feature heavily in the line-up for this year’s Work-in-Progress Lab at Film Bazaar, which includes six fiction and five documentary features.

Alankrita Shrivastava’s Lipstick Under My Burkha [pictured], produced by Prakash Jha Productions, tells the story of four women struggling with society’s restraints and searching for freedom in small town India.

“Many Indian films are focusing on patriarchy and the restrictions that women have to live with – even male filmmakers are starting to examine this subject,” said Deepti Dcunha, who curates Film Bazaar’s Wip Lab and Viewing Room sections.

The Wip fiction line-up also includes Amit Rai’s ‘I’ Pad, based on the true story of a man who invented a machine to make low-cost sanitary pads. “Its surprising to see a taboo subject like this in an Indian film,” said Dcunha.

The Work-in-Progress (Wip) Lab gives filmmakers a chance to have their rough-cut feature-length films viewed by an eminent panel of international advisers. If the 3rd annual Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards could be categorised as a David vs Goliath battle between The Rocket and The Great Gatsby, Goliath is the hands-down winner.

The 25th Annual Producers Guild of America Awards were handed out last night, with Gravity and 12 Years a Slave tying for the guild's top honor, the The Darryl F. Zanuck Award for 'Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures'. Some guilds do not allow for ties to happen, and this is the first time in the PGA's history that it has happened for their biggest award.

12 Years A Slave and Gravity have tied at this year’s PGA. With American Hustle taking the SAG ensemble on Saturday night, we have a bonafide Best Picture race on our hands folks! This is the first tie for the top film in Producers Guild Award history.

The PGA split keeps the Oscar race wide open in one of the tightest three-way battles in years, with “American Hustle” still in the game following a week of big showings at the Golden Globes, Oscar nominations and Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Tonight the Producers Guild of America (PGA) announced this year’s winning motion picture and television productions at the 25th Annual Producers Guild Awards ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

Plenty of groups give out awards for excellence in film and television at the end of every year, but no set of nominations is watched more carefully by Oscar predictors than the picks from the Producers Guild. That’s because year after year their choices end up being a fairly good indicator of which films will also be granted Best Picture nominations when the Academy makes their selections.

The Guild has announced their 2014 nominations today and there aren’t really any major surprises here. All the expected films are present, including 12 Years A Slave, American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Gravity, Her and The Wolf Of Wall Street. Animated films that nabbed nominations are The Croods, Despicable Me 2, Epic, Frozen and Monsters University. Included in the documentary nominations are A Place at the Table, Far Out Isn’t Far Enough: The Tomi Ungerer Story, Life According to Sam, We Steal Secrets: The Story of Wikileaks...

The Producers Guild of America has announced the nominees for the 25th annual PGA Awards. In the movie category, the Coen Brothers' "Inside Llewyn Davis" and the awards hopefuls from the Weinstein Company were ignored -- no "August: Osage County," "Fruitvale Station" (darn!), "Philomena" (another darn), "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom," and "Lee Daniels' The Butler." Sorry Harvey and Bob Weinstein!

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) announced today the motion picture and long-form television nominations for the 25th Annual Producers Guild Awards. The categories include: The Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures; The Award for Outstanding Producer of Animated Theatrical Motion Pictures; and The David L. Wolper Award for Outstanding Producer of Long-Form Television. The documentary film category and other television category nominations were already announced by the Guild in late 2013.

All 2014 Producers Guild Award winners will be announced on January 19th at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. This year, the Producers Guild will also present special honors to Barbara Broccoli & Michael G. The Producers Guild of America has accurately forecast the last six Best Picture Oscar winners, so it was good news for 10 films that were nominated today for the PGA’s Darryl F. Zanuck Award. While Gravity, 12 Years a Slave, and American Hustle were among the films that made the cut, Inside Llewyn Davis, The Butler, and Fruitvale Station did not. Last year, eight of the 10 movies that received nods from the PGA went on to earn Oscar nominations for Best Picture.

The Nfdc Film Bazaar announced the five projects of its Work-In-Progress Lab program.

Film Bazaar 2013 will be held from 20 – 24 Nov, at Marriott Resort, Goa, alongside Iffi (International Film Festival of India – 20 – 30 Nov).

The Work-in-Progress Lab gives five filmmakers a chance to have their rough-cut feature length films viewed by a panel of international advisors who have a one-on-one discussion with the filmmaker with an intention to help the filmmaker achieve an accomplished final cut of the film.

The mentors of the lab this year are; Marco Mueller – Artistic Director, Rome Film Festival; Derek Malcolm – British Film Critic and Historian; Laurent Danielou – of Rezo Films and Chairman of A.D.E.F., the French Film Export Association, and Philippa Campbell – Acclaimed Producer and Script Consultant including New Zealand Film Commission initiatives and workshops.

Jane Campion‘s limited series Top Of The Lake debuts on the Sundance Channel on March 18. The seven-part drama screened as a premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January, a first for a longform series. Campion wrote the BBC Two/UKTV/Sundance Channel co-production with Gerard Lee and directed along with Garth Davis. The Australian production company behind The King’s Speech has released the first public look at its highly anticipated first TV series, Top of the Lake.

The TV series is directed by Jane Campion and Garth Davis. Campion is best known for the film The Piano while Davis’s advertising work includes the Toohey’s ad Nocturnal Migration and branded piece Burn for Coca Cola.

Top of The Lake – which airs on pay TV channel UKTV on March 24 – has been executive produced by See-Saw Films’ Emile Sherman and Iain Canning.

Produced by Philippa Campbell of Escapade Pictures, the series was shot around New Zealand’s Queenstown and stars David Wenham, Madmen’s Elisabeth Moss, War Horse’s Peter Mullan and Holly Hunter, reuniting with Campion after The Piano.

Top of the Lake to screen at Sundance

An Australian production will be the first TV series to screen in its entirety at the Sundance Film Festival.

Top of the Lake is a six by one-hour drama co-directed by The Piano’s Jane Campion and Garth Davis, director of Toohey’s Nocturnal Migration ad.

The series will screen in the festival’s Premieres program.

The series is co-written by Campion and Gerard Lee and produced by Philippa Campbell and executive produced by See-Saw Films’ Emile Sherman and Iain Canning, producers of The King’s Speech and Shame.

Sherman said: “It’s such a thrill to be showing Top of the Lake, See-Saw Films’ first foray into television. It is testament to the pioneering spirit of the Sundance Film Festival that they have invited us as well as a demonstration of the fact that there is no longer a divide between film and television.

Both productions will screen as part of the Premieres program, which showcases a range of highly-anticipated dramatic world premieres.

The Top of the Lake series will be screened as a single six-hour film just once during the festival, marking the first time that Sundance has included a scripted long-form series. Top of the Lake follows a detective investigating the disappearance of a 12-year-old pregnant girl who is the daughter of a local drug lord and stars Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men), Holly Hunter (The Piano), Peter Mullan (War Horse) and David Wenham (Public Enemies).

Nfdc has appointed filmmaker Sudhir Mishra, European script consultant Philippa Campbell and Chris Paton of Fortissimo Films as mentors of Work-in-Progress lab of Film Bazaar 2012.

Upcoming mini-series Top of the Lake, produced by Emile Sherman and Iain Canning of See-Saw Films (The King’s Speech, Shame) and Philippa Campbell of Escapade Pictures goes into production on 7 February.

Written by Jane Campion and Gerard Lee and directed by Campion and Garth Davis, the 6x60minute, 7×50 minute series will shoot on location in Queenstown, New Zealand.

Holly Hunter, Peter Mullan and David Wenham have joined the cast of Jane Campion’s "Top Of The Lake" seven-part, six-hour miniseries for BBC Two and Sundance Channel says Deadline.

Written by Campion and Gerard Lee (Sweetie) and co-directed by Campion and Garth Davis, the story is set in the remote mountains of New Zealand and follows the disappearance of a five-months pregnant 12-year-old named Tui who was last seen standing chest-deep in a frozen lake.

Investigating detective Robin Griffin (Elisabeth Moss) must lose herself in order to find the missing girl. During the investigation, she collides with Matt Mitcham (Mullan), a local drug lord who is Tui’s father, and a women's camp guru named G.J (Hunter). The case pushes Robin into a journey of self-discovery.
